Dave Magedanz BIOGR APHY Alden J. “Buz” Hoefer was hired as Director of Bands at Oconomowoc High School in the summer of 1976. Prior to that he had held similar positions at Craig High School in Janesville, in Waupaca and in Browerville, Minnesota. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education from Luther College and a Master of Music Education Degree with an Emphasis in Instrumental Conducting from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. In addition, he has done advanced work at UW-Madison. During his tenure at OHS, Mr. Hoefer directed the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Jazz II and Varsity Band. The OHS Wind Symphony performed for 2500 band directors from all over the world at MidWest International Band and Orchestra Clinics in 1978, 1985 and in 1990. In 1982, the Wind Symphony represented the Music Educator’s National Conference at their national convention in San Antonio, Texas. It performed at three State Music Conventions and in 1988 won the large school division of the State Concert Band Contest sponsored by the National Band Association. The John Philip Sousa Foundation awarded the Wind Symphony its highest honor, The Sudler Flag of Honor, in 1986 for the Wind Symphony’s long record of outstanding concert performance.
On five occasions, Hoefer received the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association. He was listed in the John Philip Sousa Society’s “Who’s Who in American Wind Band Conductors” while in his 30’s and has received the Carlo Sperati Distinguished Service Award for Excellence in Instrumental Music Education from his alma mater, Luther College. (Incidentally, his son Erik Hoefer, OHS ‘86 received the Sperati Award in 2011.) During the calendar year of 1989, he participated in a teacher exchange to Melbourne, Australia where he taught at the Yarra Valley Anglican School. He also served as Executive Secretary of the Australian Band and Orchestra Director’s Association. In 1991, Mr. Hoefer accepted a position as Director of Orchestral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. During his years in that position, the orchestra grew from eighteen members to ninety-three. On three occasions the UW-L Orchestra toured Europe performing in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Buz Hoefer, is retired (it took three tries). He lives in the country in Western Wisconsin with his wife, Marion Stuart, two dogs (Trak and Archie) and Trooper, a stray kitten. The Wind Symphony Reunion Concert will be his last conducting performance. Oconomowoc High School Alumni Wind Symphony
