D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Once on this Island opened on Broadway in 1990 and was nominated for eight Tony awards, and later won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical. I personally have seen this show at least six times (including the Waukesha South version our son, Matt, appeared in), by far the most I have seen any show. Why? Because it is one of those shows which can bring tears of joy to my eyes. I hope our production will do the same for you. The show, which is based on “The Little Mermaid” by Hans Christian Anderson, brings up many topics including racial and class prejudice, and how long held traditions can affect one’s life choices. Ultimately, it’s a tale of faith, love, and sacrifices. Plenty of things to discuss after the show! I want to thank John Cramer at WCT as well as the SummerStage Board for allowing me to make Once on this Island my directorial debut. In preparation, I read many articles, purchased some books, and came up with a rehearsal schedule and game plan well in advance. What I couldn’t do, though, is pull on practical knowledge on how to best integrate the strengths of both cast and crew to make a successful show. Fortunately, the patience and expertise of these folks were more than welcome, and, I hope, have allowed us to create a musical you thoroughly enjoy. Thank you cast and crew! Joe Nolan Director

SPOTLIGHT ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS Welcome to the Waukesha Civic Theatre and this performance of Once on this Island. This first show in our 56th season marks our first ever collaboration with another area theatre, SummerStage of Delafield. This amazing cast and crew performed this show three nights in one weekend at their outdoor theatre location at Lapham Peak State Park before bringing it indoors for us to enjoy. They are to be commended for the Herculean effort it takes to stage the same show in multiple locations. I am really excited about some fantastic changes we have made to our season ticket packages this season. We realized that many of our Mainstage season ticket holders were also attending the summer and winter shows as well. We have added our new “Entertaining Eight” ticket package so that you can attend all eight shows with the same confirmed seat for each show. And to keep things flexible, we continue to offer our “Super Six,”“Fabulous Flex,” and “Perfect PIX 3” packages as before. As an added benefit, each subscriber also receives a Subscriber Benefits Card containing discounted offers at 14 Waukesha-area restaurants. You can now have a nice dinner followed by a wonderful show and save a little money at the same time. And the great thing is that you can use the card as much as you want all season long. Thanks for joining us today. We hope that you enjoy this delightful show. Kurt Magoon President, Board of Directors M AD CORNER I can’t believe I am starting my tenth season with the Waukesha Civic Theatre. My how time flies when you’re having fun! It has been a pleasure and an honor to work in this beautiful facility for this incredible organization and with this amazing community, and I look forward to many more seasons of high quality live entertainment. I am thrilled that WCT is kicking off this season by presenting Once on this Island in partnership with SummerStage at Lapham Peak State Park. Our community collaborations are one of the most exciting things we bring to the table and I appreciate our partners’ willingness to work with us. This is our first year with an eight show season subscription option. We have 29 entertainment options throughout the year, with great benefits to our subscribers (up to 40% off!), including our brand new partnership with 14 downtown Waukesha restaurants offering great discounts to all WCT subscribers. Our 56th Season is full of exciting entertainment options for the Waukesha Community … hands down, the best ticket in town. Enrich. Challenge. Entertain. That says it all, so keep watching, keep participating with, and keep supporting this cultural cornerstone. We couldn’t do it without you. John Cramer Managing Artistic Director
