F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R ’ S C H A I R “To die will be an awfully big adventure.” – Sir James M. Barrie As you grow older you naturally begin to think of what will come after. Sutton Vane had these same thoughts in 1923; the humungous casualties of WW I left him with questions as to the meaning of life and questions relating to the possibilities of an afterlife and the existence of heaven and hell. The result of his questioning is the wonderful play that you will see tonight. Full of drama, mystery and humor, it is a thought provoking piece of theatre history. There will be no preaching tonight just a look at the struggles and triumphs of life and beyond. Of course, not one of us knows what is to come but I hope that once we do go it will be a boat ride, like this one. The play has an interesting history; the surreal Outward Bound proved too offbeat for London producers of 1923 and so Vane self-produced it, which led to its becoming a smash hit in London and on Broadway. Incidentally, Rod Serling often credited it for being his inspiration “into” The Twilight Zone. I feel very strongly about preserving theatre history and heritage and so it is an honor to present such a thought provoking script, written almost 90 years ago, to you this evening. Enjoy, Micheal
