PROFILES Chad Bay (Jon, Shane, Terry, Nikolas) is elated to be joining Pegasus Players for their 2012 Young Playwrights Festival! Newly graduated with a BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, he moved to Chicago this past fall after spending a second summer with the Riverside Theatre Shakespeare Festival in Iowa City where he had the great fortune to work on wonderful productions of ROMEO & JULIET, LOVE’S LABOURS LOST, TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA and AH WILDERNESS! Chad’s work in Chicago includes staged readings for the GREAT GAY SCREENPLAY CONTEST with Pride Films and Plays. Favorite roles elsewhere include Eugene in BRIGHTON BEACH MEMOIRS, Treplev in THE SEAGULL, Benedick in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, and (a piece of) the Melancholy Dane himself in HAMLET. Caren Blackmore (Young Woman, Celia, Olivia) is excited and thankful to work with YPF once again! She was last seen in YPF24 and THE GIMMICK also with Pegasus Players. Chicago area credits include: Theatre Wit, Clockwise Theatre, Black Ensemble Theater, ETA, MPAACT, Studio One and Stockyards Theatre Project. A BIG thank you to the students, cast, directors, production team and her circle of love. YPF is truly amaZing... Ian Daniel McLaren (Karl, Adrian) is excited to be working with YPF this year. Previous Chicago credits include work with The Gift, About Face, TimeLine, Chicago Dramatists, Chicago Children’s Theatre, Caffeine, and, most recently, the Chicago premiere of FARRAGUT NORTH with Stage Left. Next up he can be seen in the world premiere of fml: how Carson McCullers saved my life at Steppenwolf. Paloma Nozicka (Paula, Alice) is thrilled be a part of the 25th Young Playwrights Festival. She recently returned from a sevenweek production in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where she played Gabriella in BOEING BOEING (Theatre Squared). Chicago credits include THE CHICAGO LANDMARK PROJECT (Theatre Seven) and the Midwest premiere of SONNETS FOR AN OLD CENTURY (Steppenwolf Theatre Company/UTC). University credits include Leata in HAIR and Jessica Goldman in THIS IS OUR YOUTH. Paloma holds a BA in Acting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Richard Perez (Gold, Man, Commissioner) is an actor, director and educator. He has worked as a theatre artist in New York, California and many places in between, but feels he has found his theatrical home in Chicago. Favorite roles include: Gabe in DINNER WITH FRIENDS, Bobby Gould in SPEED-THEPLOW, Lenny in RUMORS, Malvolio in TWELTH NIGHT, Oscar in THE ODD COUPLE and most recently Ernesto in THE BUTLER DIDN’T at Metropolis Theatre. In Chicago he has performed on the stages of the Goodman, American Theatre and Chicago Dramatists. Upcoming projects include the direction of F*CKING A for Urban Theatre Company in March and the role of Dennis in BOMBS, BABES, AND BINGO for Mortar Theatre Company in May. Richard is honored to be part of this year’s Young Playwright’s Festival and wishes a lifetime of success for all the talented new voices you will hear tonight. Before moving to Chicago, Shantelle has worked with the Lake Geneva Theatre Company in their production of CHRISTMAS WITH A TWIST and Bite Theatre’s MY FIRST TIME. So far she has worked with Dream Theatre on Audience Annihilated: Women Only Train and Theatre of Women 6. Ilesa Duncan (Director, PAPER CLOUDS/THE MURAL/Artistic Director) recently directed the acclaimed production of THE NATIVITY for Congo Square Theatre at the Goodman. In addition to the last several YPF festival productions, her recent directing work includes THE GIMMICK and SHAPE OF A GIRL (Pegasus Players), BLUE SHADOW (Lifeline Theatre), HOPE SIX (Chicago Dramatists) and CROWNS for the Contemporary American Theater Company in Columbus Ohio. Other direction at Pegasus includes Jeff Award nominated TICK, TICK BOOM as well as HEATWAVE, BREATH BOOM, EV’RY TIME I FEEL THE SPIRIT, and four Young Playwrights Festivals (DINE & HASH, BLOOMING FLOWERS IN WEEDS, IN YOUR DREAMS and GRACE). Theatre/HERE in New York. As the new Artistic Director at Pegasus Players, Ilesa is a member of the Lincoln Center Theatre Director’s Lab, and a NEA/TCG Directing Fellow. She is alsoAssociate Artist with PanAmerica Performance Works (formerly Latino Chicago) and Chicago Dramatists. Alex Levy (Director, KARL & JOEY/LOVE) His work has been seen throughout the United States and around the world. He recently directed the national tour of AMERICA AMERIQUE (World Premiere) for Jena Productions. In Los Angeles he has directed the world premiere of IN THE RED for the ARK Theatre and COPENHAGEN, HOME FRONT (World Premiere) and DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE for UCLA. Before moving to Los Angeles, Alex served as Artistic Director of Pegasus Players in Chicago. For Pegasus, he directed several productions including CONTINENTAL DIVIDE, GOLDA’S BALCONY (Jeff Award for “Outstanding Solo Performance), THE UPPER ROOM (Jeff Citation for “Best New Work”), BLACK CAESAR (Three Black Excellence Nominations), STILL LIFE and BROADWAY BOUND (Jeff nominated for four citations including “Best Production” and winner of the After Dark Award for “Best Ensemble”) and THE ONE-EYED MAN IS KING as well as eight productions for the Chicago Young Playwrights Festival. While at Pegasus, the company’s budget doubled and the theatre won seventeen Joseph Jefferson Citations, seven After Dark Awards, and Pegasus became the first arts organization to win The Chicago Community Trust’s “James Brown IV” award (which included a $50,000 grant) and the City of Chicago’s “Human Relations Award.” His production of MY SOUL IS A WITNESS was featured in the Hindu Metro-Plus International Theatre Festival in Chennai, India and toured several cities throughout India. Alex twice led international tours through the Middle East sponsored by The United States State Department. Last year, Alex was selected to participate in Dah Theatre’s International Research Center for Actors and Directors in Belgrade, Serbia. He has also worked with, Goodman Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre, Red Twist Theatre, Smoke and Mirrors, Serendipity Theatre Collective, Chicago Dramatists, Theatre Building Chicago, Oakton College, Loyola University, The Studio Theatre in Washington D.C. and Geva Theatre in Rochester, N.Y. Alex holds a BA in Political

In 2012 Alex will begin serving as the Artistic Director of Ballybeg Theatre in New York City. Tiffany Trent (Director, THE PURCHASE/A BUSINESS AFFAIR) is delighted to return to YPF after thoroughly enjoying years 2005-2008. Script development workshops include Alabama Shakespeare Festival and New Harmony Writers’ Project. Directing credits include MPAACT, ETA, Youth Theater Workshop at Chernin’s Center for the Arts, Jazz Institute of Chicago, and Chicago Dramatists, where she also taught in the arts outreach program. Other Arts Education programs that she has served are Goodman Theatre’s Youth Drama Workshop (1995-2002), CAPE Foundation, and she serves two congregations in drama ministry. Costume designs include Chicago Dramatists’, Neo-Futurists, People’s Jazz, and MPAACT. Tiffany teaches in Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago, where she earned her BA. She also has an MFA in Directing from the School of Drama at Carnegie Mellon, and an M.Div from Chicago Theological Seminary. Matthew Cummings (Properties Design)) is excited to return to Pegasus this season. He has been designing in and around Chicago for 4 years. His designs have been seen at Victory Gardens, Drury Lane Oakbrook, City Lit, and many more. He want’s to thank the YPF playwrights for there great work, congratulations! Denise Karczewski (Lighting Designer) is happy to be back at Pegasus with this production of the 25th YPF. Christopher Kriz (Sound Design) works nationally as a composer and sound designer. Chris is delighted to be working with Pegasus again, having previously designed JITNET, TWO TRAINS RUNNING, GOLDA’S BALCONY, SHAPE OF A GIRL and many others. In Chicago, Chris has designed productions for companies including Steppenwolf, Goodman, Northlight, Victory Gardens and TimeLine. Adrienne Bader (Stage Manager) is excited to be working with Pegasus Players for the first time, and is honored to be a part of the 25th Anniversary of the Young Playwrights Festival. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, where her credits include THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE (Dir. David Bell), SWEENEY TODD (Dir. George Cederquist), THE WAA-MU SHOW 2010 (Dir. Dominic Missimi), CABARET and THE WIZARD OF OZ (Dir. Katie Spelman). She spent the 2010-2011 season as a Production Assistant for Writers’ Theatre, working on productions of SHE LOVES ME (Dir. Michael Halberstam), DO THE HUSTLE and HEARTBREAK HOUSE (Dir. William Brown). Most recently she stage managed SIZZLE: A GLOBAL WARMING COMEDY (dir. Aaron Henrickson) for New Suit Theatre Company. Many thanks to her friends and family for all of their support—she couldn’t do it without you! Arlene Crewdson (Founding Executive Director Emeritus) founded Pegasus Players in 1978 and has directed numerous productions for the theatre. The Chicago Tribune has twice named Dr. Crewdson one of the 20 Chicagoans who have made a memorable contribution to the arts. She was honored as a mayoral appointee to the Community Development Advisory Council, which consults on the use of federal funds in Chicago. Dr. Crewdson was awarded the British-American Arts Administrative Training Fellowship, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, to explore similarities of British and American theatre in fund development and arts in education. She has also served on NEA panels overseeing development and musical theatre. The United States Information Agency chose Arlene as the U.S. representative at Tashkent’s First International Theatre Festival in Uzbekistan. Arlene is a past recipient of a Community Fellowship Grant from the Chicago Community Trust, allowing for a year of national and international investigation of funding for arts programs that serve the disadvantaged. Arlene is artistic originator of the LEAP program, an arts-ineducation program operating successfully in the Chicago Public School system, and she has acted as a consultant for arts in education programs nationally. She has worked with the Chicago Human Relations Commission and Imagine Chicago to use
P R O F I L E S ( c o n t .) theatre to address pressing social issues. The Chicago Art International Program has recently chosen Arlene to serve as a host to a U.S.I.S. international visitor from Egypt. Dr. Crewdson is a professor emeritus at Truman College, one of the Chicago City Colleges, where she taught theatre for the college on Channel 11 and
in the national American Social History Project. Currently she is developing a distant learning project that will link the college with Chicago Public Schools. In Addition to directing responsibilities, Arlene has served as a collaborator in the development of many new works that have originated at this theatre.
ABOUT PEGASUS PLAYERS Pegasus Players began in 1978, growing out of original student writings performed by both faculty and students in the City Colleges. Touring began in order to fill the needs of the Uptown area and of groups that had no access to live theatre. After becoming incorporated in 1979, the group found a home in a rented space in the Edgewater Presbyterian Church, allowing it to continue its commitment to the residents of the community. In 1984, the theatre relocated to the O’Rourke Center for the Performing Arts on the Truman College campus, located in the heart of Uptown. In recognition of Pegasus’ commitment to the community, the City College system makes the modernly equipped facility, which previously stood largely unused, available at no charge to the organization. Pegasus is, however, an independent and autonomous theater company. The move from a 90-seat house to a 250-seat, $4,000,000 modern facility led to an amazing growth for Pegasus, permitting the theatre to serve larger groups than it ever had before. Since beginning its residency at the O’Rourke Center, over 600,000 people have seen Pegasus’ shows. This has created a unique partnership between a not-for-profit, community based theater and a public institution, each using the other’s individual resources for the betterment of the community and contributing significantly to a positive image of the Uptown area. Recognition for artistic excellence has prevailed throughout Pegasus’ 33-year history. The company has received 80 Joseph Jefferson Citations, more than any other Chicago theater in this category. The experience Pegasus provides for Chicago is invaluable. The 25th Young Playwrights Festival is Pegasus inaugural production as theatre in residence at Jane Addams Hull House’s Beacon Street Theater. Pegasus remains committed to providing a quality arts experience for those who would normally be denied it, such as inner-city school students and low-income senior citizens. The Joseph Jefferson Committee awarded the first ever Jeff Citation for an outreach program to Pegasus for its “extraordinary success in serving Chicago’s disenfranchised.” The Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs recognized the Young Playwrights Festival with a special cash award for “Outstanding contribution to the arts and outreach efforts to expand the accessibility of high quality arts experiences.”
