PIUS XI HIGH SCHOOL PROUDLY PRESENTS
PERFORMED AT THE HISTORIC PABST THEATER
MARCH 25–27, 2011
Hairspray
Book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan Music and Lyrics by Marc Shaiman - Lyrics by Scott Wittman Presented through special arrangement with and all authorized performance materials supplied by: Music Theatre International 421 West 54th Street New York, NY 10010 Pius XI High School 1
PRODUCTION NOTES The definition of an ideal play in the Renaissance Period was said to be a play that “teaches delightfully.” This is certainly true of our production of “Hairspray.” The colorful sets and costumes, the toe-tapping rhythms of the songs and the outrageous characters convey a mood of frivolity while teaching the important messages of tolerance, acceptance and reinforcing our school’s Franciscan value of honoring the individual. We are proud to say that the cast of “Hairspray” is a reflection of the community that we call Pius XI High School. In our cast we have student basketball players, track team members, golf team players and Forensics champions. On the stage this evening will be seasoned veterans singing and dancing side by side with firsttime performers, not the least of which is our own Mr. Terry Mank: veteran Pius XI teacher, Department Chair and Coach, but a “rookie” performer in this production. Joining Mr. Mank in the “adult” roles are Mr. Jonathan West from the Sunset Playhouse in Elm Grove, and Ms. Ericka Wade, a highly accomplished Milwaukee performer. All three of these adults were valuable teachers and mentors for our students throughout the entire process of this show. We hope that this evening’s performance is both delightful and entertaining for you, our wonderful audience. We also hope that “Hairspray” reminds you that these productions in the beautiful Pabst Theater strive to teach our students the value of hard work, discipline, team work, and the value of celebrating the gifts of each individual. Some day, we look forward to mounting these productions in our very own Performing Arts Center, but until that day when we can walk into the “front door” of our own PAC……
