d i r e c to r ’ s n o t e When Pal Joey exploded onto the stage Christmas Day 1940 it forever changed the future of what the American musical could and would be. It was the penultimate creation of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, the cleverest, most sophisticated, Tin Pan Alley music masters in their only collaboration with John O’Hara, the best-selling novelist with the uncannily accurate ear for dialogue. The work dared to do what had yet to be done, be the first contemporarily frank musical comedy for adults. Based on O’Hara’s wildly successful New Yorker Magazine short stories, Pal Joey was written as a series of letters to “Dear Pal Ted” from “Pal Joey,” a second rate nightclub entertainer and amoral, calculating heel whose venality is cloaked by an amiable persona. No “tired businessman’s show,” Pal Joey offered a world of adulterous socialites and blackmailing street thugs, of scheming climbers and cynical journalists. Featuring one of the truly great musical scores, Pal Joey launched the careers of young Van Johnson, Stanley Donan and the original “Joey Evans,” Gene Kelly, while playing for over a year on Broadway. The precursor to Carousel’s “Billy Bigelow,” Cabaret’s “Sally Bowles,” Hair’s “Berger” and Chicago’s “Roxy Hart,” Pal Joey introduced the first anti-hero to the musical and ventured to explore the darker desires of man while telling its story in some of music theatre’s most bewitching melodies. Brave men and true, O’Hara, Rodgers and Hart were like explorers of old, here blazing a trail through a dark new urban lyrical landscape. Michael Weber Managing Artistic Director
