It weaves together strands from Chopin’s tragic life story, combining beautiful footage of his important places, interviews with Polish, French, and American experts and music lovers, teaching moments about Chopin’s compositional style, and pianist Pamela Howland’s heartfelt performances of his masterworks. Also featured is legendary actress Rosemary Harris, Emmy winner for her 1975 performance of Chopin’s lover George Sand in the Masterpiece Theatre series, NOTORIOUS WOMAN. This unique mix creates a kaleidoscopic view of Chopin’s emotional life, music, and genius, not only transporting viewers back to the 19th century, but inviting them to discover the meaning and impact Chopin’s genius and music still can have for them today. Chopin was a child prodigy with a surprisingly normal family life, who lived to be only 39 years old. He spent the first half of his musical life in Poland, a provincial musical outpost torn by epic struggle for national identity and freedom, and the second half in Paris-the cultural capital of the world-seeking fame and fortune. There he met George Sand, a woman who initially terrified and repulsed him with her sophisticated, independent ways, but with whom he quickly fell in love and spent nearly a decade of his most productive composing years. Their stormy, ultimately tragic relationship reveals to us the emotional lives of two artistic geniuses of the 19th century, as well as the story of two mortals struggling to find love and happiness.

REMEMBERING FREDERIC tells Chopin’s story through beautiful footage of the places he lived and fascinating interviews with experts and non-experts, musicians and non-musicians. What these Poles, French, and Americans have in common is their love of Chopin’s music, no matter their professions. With this documentary I intend to convey that Chopin’s music is for everyone – not just the musical elite. There is no special training, education, or qualification necessary to enjoy his music and to feel it deeply – you just need an open heart. Oconomowoc Arts Center

D I R E C TO R ’ S S TAT E M E N T As a pianist I’ve had a long love affair with Chopin’s music. When I was eight I was given an LP that told his life story by weaving his music together with the voices of characters from his life – including George Sand, Franz Liszt, and other notable Parisians of the day. As a child these people became real to me, and they have been with me ever since. Later, as a young piano student at the Wisconsin Conservatory, I fell in love with legendary actress Rosemary Harris’s heartbreaking portrayal of Madame Sand in the Masterpiece Theatre series NOTORIOUS WOMAN. What particularly moved me then, as it still does, was how she brought the soul mate relationship between Sand and Chopin to life. After a family trip to Poland several years ago where I found my Grandfather’s birthplace – Żyrardów - quite close to Chopin’s, I realized that this love I had for Chopin was not just a performer’s desire to share music with audiences, but something much more personal; REMEMBERING FREDERIC is my way of sharing the whole Chopin—his musical genius as well as an in-depth picture of the man who really lived and dealt with the same issues we all face—like bills to pay and lovers’ quarrels. One of the great beauties of Chopin’s music is the ever-present sense of loss and longing. In English, we call this feeling “melancholy,” but the Polish word for it, “żal,” encompasses a much wider range of emotions– nostalgia, sadness, and wistfulness, to dreaminess, morbidity and even anger. No matter what you call it, at the core of all of these feelings is the idea of losing something that can never be regained. Yearning, loss, and longing –dreams of something better—this is what everyone can relate to in both Chopin’s music and the story of his life. REMEMBERING FREDERIC tells Chopin’s story through beautiful footage of the places he lived and fascinating interviews with experts and non-experts, musicians and nonmusicians. PAMELA HOWLAND, pianist/filmmaker

BIOGR APHY PAMELA HOWLAND is a gifted pianist who breathes life and vitality into classical music for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Trained at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music, where she received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Piano Performance and Literature, she performs extensively as a soloist and chamber musician. Highlights include numerous recitals in the United States, featured recitals in Paris, Vienna, and Warsaw, a tour of Colombia, South America, and live solo appearances on National Public Radio broadcasts in Minnesota, New York and North Carolina. She has also appeared with the Winston-Salem Symphony, Charlotte Repertory Orchestra, and Wake Forest University Orchestra, and has held faculty positions in New York, Minnesota, and North Carolina, where she currently teaches in the Wake Forest University Music Department. Pamela Howland‘s twelve CDs reflect her eclectic tastes, from standard solo classical music to Christmas tunes, from African-American spirituals to a combination of French poetry and music.

PAMELA HOWLAND is also a first-time filmmaker whose feature documentary film REMEMBERING FREDERIC:The Genius of Chopin is the story of her search as a pianist to find the world, music, and relationships of Frederic Chopin and to bring this to life for modern audiences. What began as a musician’s desire to create an atypical classical music performance in celebration of Chopin’s 200th birthday in the United States in 2010, led her to create an original one-woman theatre/music show called REMEMBERING FRÉDÉRIC: A Musical Conversation between Frédéric Chopin and George Sand, which she premiered at the Grać Chopina piano festival in Warsaw, Poland in 2009. Her passion for performing and promoting classical music has led her over the years to develop a unique style of performance which allows her audiences to go away both educated and entertained, feeling that they have learned something about themselves as well as the music. She now brings this to film; REMEMBERING FREDERIC, premiered at the RiverRun International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in April 2012, will have its European premiere in Warsaw, Poland this October.
