PRODUCTION TEA M Sean O’Casey (Playwright) Sean O’Casey was born in Dublin on March 30th 1880. A Protestant in a Catholic city, he faced many hardships from an early age, including the death of his father when he was only six years old. Chronic eye disease prevented him from pursuing an education, but nonetheless taught himself to read at the age of 14. Whilst working as a laborer and a railwayman amongst other jobs, he became an activist in the Nationalist movement. In 1916, however, disillusioned with factionalist politics, O’Casey turned to writing plays. His famous trilogy, The Shadow of a Gunman, Juno and the Paycock, and The Plough and the Stars, express his revulsion towards the violence of oppression, civil war and rebellion. A revolutionary thinker, he satirized the glorification of war and the heroics of the Nationalist movement. He sympathized instead with the sacrifice of innocent people. During the Abbey Theatre’s premiere of The Plough and the Stars, rioting broke out when the audience took offence at O’Casey’s portrayal of the men of the Easter Rising. Throughout his long life, O’Casey’s passion for poetry, art and the human spirit endured. He showcased the courage and fortitude of women, overshadowed by their often feckless male counterparts. His belief in human spirituality disfavored both organized religion and atheism alike. A troubled yet passionate artist, Sean O’Casey, lived the latter half of his life in self-imposed exile in Devon, England, where he died on September 18th 1964. John Mossman* (Director) John is pleased to be working with the talented people at Seanachaí.
