BIOGR APHIES Tim Ellis (Drums): Tim Ellis, a drummer from St. Paul, Minnesota has a long history with drums. He has been playing in bands of all genres for over 35 years. Along the way, Tim collected vintage drums since back before they were called vintage. In need of a place to store his ballooning drum collection, Tim opened a shop where he now employs professional drummers for their expertise and also produces his own line of drums right in the shop basement with the Ellis Drum Co line. Tom Tange (Trumpet): Trumpet player Tom Tange’s interest in music began early on playing trumpet in his high school band in southern Minnesota and playing keyboards and trumpet with various R&B groups. Some of his musical influences include Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Art Farmer, Dave Douglas, John Scofield, and piano players Herbie Hancock and Bill Evans. Tom has played a rather wide variety of “gigs” over the years beginning with a multiple award winning jazz ensemble in college, to working with blues legend Mojo Buford, and orchestral work with the legendary Four Tops. Tom has played with many Twin City area bands, and arranging and composition have also been a part of Tom’s musical endeavors. Butch Zierath (Bass/Vocals): Originally from South Dakota, bassist Butch Zierath played ballrooms and school dances throughout the Midwest before going on the road with various bands. He has backed artists such as Little Anthony, Del Shannon, Lou Christy, The Platters, The Coasters, The Drifters, Leslie Gore, Fabian and many more. Tours of Canada and Europe followed before settling in the Twin Cities area in 1982. Since then Butch has recorded in many major Twin City studios and performed in almost every venue with groups like, Gangbusters, Stonewings House Band, Whitesides Walls, Lip Service, Blue Drifters, City Lites, Rae Singer Band and many more. Alan Lecher (Trombone/Vocals/Percussion): Alan was born and raised in the Twin Cities. Growing up in Apple Valley, he began playing the trombone at age ten. After high school, Alan joined the U.S. army band and was stationed in picturesque Ansbach, Germany. While there, he performed all over Bavaria with the 1st Armored Division Band. He also served one tour in the
Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, performing concerts for the troops. After three years in the army, he attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, completing a double major in vocal and instrumental music education while winning numerous solo competitions along the way. Alan returned to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota for graduate studies in trombone performance. He has worked with numerous rock and swing groups, including an extended stint in Vic Volare’s Fabulous Volare Lounge Orchestra. He has also collaborated with Martin Zellar, Steve Millar, Laura Schlieske, Boogie Wonderland, Riverside Swing Band, and the Minnesota Jazz Orchestra, among others. Alan took a two-year hiatus from performing to teach music in the Philippines at a school for orphans. Some of Alan’s biggest musical influences have been trombonists Urbie Green, Frank Rosolino, and J.J. Johnson, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pat Metheny, and Chick Corea. Scott Johnson (Woodwinds): Since graduating from the University of Minnesota in 1987, Scott Johnson has been an active performer on the Twin Cities and national music scene. He has toured with various Jazz, R&B, and Broadway show groups. His recording credits include R&B legends Charles Brown, Big Jay McNeally, and Lowel Fulsom, and he has shared the stage with luminaries such as James Brown and Etta James. Currently Johnson teaches and performs in the Twin Cities area. Bill Davis (Guitar/Vocals): Minnesota Music Hall of Fame’s Bill Davis is an extremely accomplished first call lead guitarist and vocalist. Bill started his professional career at the age of thirteen. He has performed local, regional and international dates with numerous A-list talents in various club, studio and concert venues. Bill has an impressive ability to coax a vast tonal array of sound from his instruments night after night, going from smooth and creamy jazz colors to the grittiest blues and rock tones you will ever hear. Bill is a superb arranger as well as being an outstanding vocalist and songwriter. Bill has worked as an independent and staff musician for several recording studios in the Twin Cities and Los Angeles, with numerous arranger and producer credits to his name. You can also catch Bill performing with the classic rock band Gypsy.

BIOGR APHY Michigan clarinetist Dave Bennett, born May 1984, has established himself during the last five years as America’s premier interpreter playing in a style and sound inspired by his hero Benny Goodman. Dave has led his sextet for stage show concerts in thirty states and has performed with more than twenty orchestras in the USA and Canada for his Goodman Tribute Symphony Pops, including Detroit, Toronto, Nashville, Vancouver, Omaha, Orlando, Grand Rapids, Sarasota and Columbus. Dave Bennett is a self-taught prodigy who began at age ten on a clarinet given to him by his grandfather. Although now still only in his 20’s Dave’s playing career goes back to age 14, when he began frequent tours on the “traditional jazz” circuit with a Saginaw-based Dixieland band. At age 12 trumpet legend Doc Cheatham invited him to the bandstand of the famous Sweet Basil jazz club in NYC. At age 17 Dave won a competition over 600 entrants to guest solo with The Count Basie Orchestra, and Pete Fountain, upon hearing a tape of Dave, made an unprompted call to the teenager encouraging him: “You are on the right track.” Dave has recorded with three of Goodman’s famous band members: guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, pianist Dick Hyman and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard. All three endorse Dave as “the closest ever to Benny Goodman”. In 2008 Dave made his European debut with these players at the Bern Jazz Festival. Also in 2008, Dave was the featured guest with Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band heard on two broadcasts on the NPR Jazz at Riverwall series.

The year 2010 introduced a new aspect to Dave’s musical conception and development. In June, Arbors Records released Dave’s Clarinet is King – Songs of Great Clarinetists. On this CD Dave Bennett performs tunes made famous by such players as Artie Shaw, Pete Fountain, Barney Bigard, and Acker Bilk. Bennett gives fresh and creative treatments to such classics as Nightmare, Stranger on the Shore, Where or When and Begin the Beguine. The recording is his first quartet feature and includes Dave’s regular touring members. They have performed at jazz festivals in San Diego, Elkhart, Detroit and at a number of leading jazz nightclubs. The music heard is part of Dave’s new stage and symphony pops program. In July 2010 Dave Bennett made his eighth concert appearance with The Detroit Symphony in five years. He was chosen to open the DSO’s new collaborative series with The Edsel and Eleanor Ford House, and performed to a capacity crowd at the outdoor setting of the estate. Dave Bennett’s musical abilities aren’t limited to jazz and swing. He is passionate about rockabilly, pop, country, and American “Roots” music, and even composes his own material. During recent shows, he sometimes performs the music of Jerry Lee Lewis and plays a mean boogie woogie piano. Dave also plays “rockin” electric guitar along the lines of his hero Brian Setzer… and he sings a few tunes in shows, which includes his special treatment (and unique chord sequence) on St. James Infirmary. All in all, Dave Bennett is one of the most remarkable and unique talents on today’s music scene, and he is clearly one of the greatest clarinetists of our time.
