A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E S TAG E D I R E C TO R – D I M I T R I TO S C A S I feel like I lived in 1959, even though I was still 6 years a-coming. I know it sounds weird…but I feel like I lived then because of all the endless pages of research I plowed through when I worked with my friend, screenwriter John Hoffman, on his script about the life of Hugh Hefner. The music. The clothes. The lifestyle. The women. All part of my everyday life for over THREE YEARS. No wonder I feel like I was alive then. That’s why I decided to set this take of Cosi fan tutte in that very period – as a kind of catharsis – or a kind of homage… to a film that might never see the light of day – but more importantly, an homage to a period in time that I have grown to adore. The excitement of it! On the brink of something remarkable. Mere moments before the sexual revolution… when a woman wore hose and would never think to take it upon herself to propose. Where men with bryl-creamed hair went to the office to crunch numbers but ended up lighting up a Pall Mall and having a highball before the day was done. A time when everyone – man and woman alike – was kinda’ forced to live in a box. Toe the line. Follow the status quo. This is a world that these new characters are about to turn on its head! What will start as a practical joke, will end up changing their lives for the better – making a new reality that will question the puritanical society of the 1950’s and move our characters into the horizon of a new future, where they can make their own choices and happily live with the ramifications, both good and bad. They will embrace a new understanding of LOVE, because at the end of the work day they will each realize a powerful lesson: “we are all just the same.” A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R – B I L L T H E I S E N It is always exciting to bring a Mozart opera to the Cabot stage, but especially so when we take a fresh look at a classic like Cosi. Though it was written in 1790, the themes of Cosi are just as relevant today- but in the hands of stage director and librettist Dimitri Toscas this retelling of the Mozart masterpiece breathes new life into the work. Setting the piece in Chicago in the late 1950’s makes the characters and relationships much more accessible to a modern audience while still being true to Mozart’s original intention. Though you will be hearing that wonderful music that many of us have loved for years, you will be experiencing Cosi fan tutte as you never have before. Also exciting…..very, VERY exciting is our 2011/2012 Skylight season. The world premiere opera The Rivals, one of Broadway’s biggest hits The Music Man, the incredible Leslie Fitzwater in Edith Piaf Onstage, the world premiere musical Daddy Long Legs and Sondheim’s masterpiece Sunday in the Park With George. All five of these extraordinary productions have never before been seen on the Cabot stage. Add to that, our two studio theatre productions, Beyond the Ingénue and Things That Go Ding! and you have a 7-show season filled with bold, life-affirming, meaningful stories coming alive onstage in superbly crafted productions. Celebrating composer Joshua Schmidt, who grew up in the Milwaukee area and spent endless hours in the orchestra pit here at Skylight, we are incredibly proud to present the Wisconsin premiere of his critically acclaimed new work. You don’t have to travel to Chicago or New York to experience an amazing night of theatre, dance or music – it’s all right here in your own hometown. It makes me very proud of our performers, designers and staff every time some tells me that they’ve seen a particular show multiple times before (often on Broadway) and thought that Skylight’s production was one of the best they had ever seen. It is, happily, a comment I hear time and time again. The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) will be kicking off their 2011 Campaign on March 29, 2011 right here at the Broadway Theatre Center. UPAF is our largest donor and we are extremely grateful for the annual operating support it provides to us and to all of the groups it supports. It is, in large part, because of the longtime support of UPAF that we have such outstanding performing arts in our community. Skylight is proud to be included in the list of UPAF member and affiliate organizations. We are also very pleased to have been a part of a recent joint effort between three UPAF member companies to provide an opportunity to enjoy not only Skylight’s Cosi fan tutte, but also Florentine Opera’s An Italian Girl in Algiers directed by Skylight’s Artistic Director Bill Theisen and Next Act Theatre’s A Sleeping Country. It was a wonderfully positive effort and we’ve been pleased with the response. We hope to find more collaborative opportunities such as this in the future. C O S I FA N T U T T E — S Y N O P S I S Place- Chicago Time- 1959 ACT I Two sisters, Flora and Dora dress for work. At the same time, their boyfriends, Elmer and Randall, ride the elevated train, downtown. At work the men chat about how in love they are with their ladies. Their boss, Al Fonzarello, who can’t take any more of their love sick blather, interrupts them and makes a bet with the men that their girlfriends don’t love them as much as they think they do. The men take him up on the bet. Later, in the hall outside the men’s office, we find Flora and Dora gazing through the hall window, enjoying the view of their handsome boyfriends as they work. Fonzarello announces that the men have been transferred to New York and must go immediately. The couples say a sad goodbye, promising to keep in touch. In the office break room, the women are devastated. Miss Desi, the head of the secretarial pool, urges them to get back to work. Her dislike of the girls is a bit obvious. Dora is beyond consoling. She wails, “Why did I wait for him? Now I’ll die a virgin!” Miss Desi can’t believe her ears. Life has jaded her, a single mom whose man left her for his career. True love doesn’t exist for Desi and she thinks the women are silly to expect it. Desi now wants to teach these women a lesson, so she joins Fonzarello in his silly bet, and tells them that Desi has two friends the women should meet. Elmer and Randall return, disguised as beatniks. They try their best to be cool, but Flora and Dora are onto them. The sisters play along, thinking this is some romantic game. They feign hard-to-get and say they would never cheat on their boyfriends. They send the beatniks away. The men think they’ve won the bet, but Fonzarello won’t give up that easily. He has 24 hours to prove his point and they make a deal to play along. Fonzarello makes the men hide in the storage closet until he comes up with the second part of his plan. It’s lunchtime, and the sisters steal away to their secret spot on the roof, but Fonzarello’s plan interrupts their peaceful lunch. The men rush to the roof and threaten to kill themselves by drinking poison, pretending to be dying. Desi enters as a doctor and tries to save their lives. In a ridiculous turn, the women decide to teach their men a lesson. They pretend to be attracted by the other sister’s man. The men suddenly feel insecure. Everything is upside down now and the sisters need a break to figure things out, but they’ll soon find that they’re in this joke too deep to turn back now. There will be a 20-minute intermission between acts I and II. ACT II Miss Desi explains the Women’s Guide to Love. Back in the sisters’ bedroom, the sisters sadly finish embroidering their “engagement panties” with their boyfriends’ names on them. They try to figure out why their perfect boyfriends would do something so stupid! Then they come up with a plan to really teach them a lesson. They decide to play along and act like they fell in love with these beatniks. Just then, the men call from downstairs. They are on the corner and want to take the girls out. 4 Skylight Opera Theatre
C O S I FA N T U T T E — S Y N O P S I S In a hip, smoky club, the “wrong” couples are on their first dates. Flora and Randall decide to go for a walk and leave Dora to act on the secret plans. In a hot and heavy flirt, Dora convinces Elmer that she’s moved on. She doesn’t love Randall anymore! To prove it, she offers Elmer a token of her love. On the Michigan Avenue Bridge, Flora is not as successful. She can’t bring herself to even lie about leaving Elmer. She recites e.e. cummings to the moon and wishes things were the way they used to be. Randall is thrilled! He thinks they’ve won the bet! The next morning, the men are on the train headed to the office, still in disguise. Each shares their stories about their very different experiences. Randall is proud to say they won the bet, but Elmer has bad news. Dora seems to have fallen in love with him. The men are crushed. Elmer expresses a Man’s Guide to Love. Even though they don’t show it, men have feelings too! Back in the office, the men blame Fonzarello for their pain. This bet has gone too far. In the secretarial pool, the women now manipulate Miss Desi into believing that they want to marry their new lovers, tonight! Desi was right. They refuse to die old maids. Desi buys their lie and reports to the men. The sisters giggle at how easy it is to pull this joke off. The sisters find the men hiding in the closet and express their “true love” for their new boyfriends, just so their rotten boyfriends can hear every word. Later, Fonzarello finds the men, in an emotional heap. He tells them not to beat themselves up. The women can’t help it. They’re just like men…we’re all just the same. On the roof, it’s time for the final blow: the mock wedding. Miss Desi is disguised as an Orthodox Priest and the “wedding” goes off without a hitch. The women sign the marriage certificate. The men are crushed. The sisters can’t contain themselves any longer. They erupt with laughter. They turn the joke against their men and teach them a lesson. Flora and Dora get down on their knees and propose to their real boyfriends. The couples are happily reunited.

WHO’S WHO Kathy Pyeatt (Flora) – Kathy is happy to be back at Skylight where she was previously seen as an elegant debutante (Constanza, The Abduction from the Seraglio), frustrated mom (Mother, Hansel and Gretel), frumpy old maid (Berta, The Barber of Seville) and a young peasant (Gianetta, The Elixir of Love). Upcoming, she portrays Tosca with the Springfield Symphony in Missouri and debuts with the Asheville Lyric Opera. Recent performances include: Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni) with St. Petersburg Opera, First Lady (The Magic Flute) Florentine Opera, Micaela (Carmen) Fox Valley Symphony, and Annelies a new work based on the Diary of Anne Frank with the Key Chorale in Sarasota, Florida. Kathy is the director for the Wisconsin District MET Auditions, which she has won and in which she was a two-time recipient of the Skylight Opera Theatre Award.

Mark Womack (Elmer) – Hailed by Opera News as “strikingly warm, gracefully honeytoned,” Mark Womack’s 2010-2011 season includes Sharpless in Madama Butterfly with Knoxville Opera, Frank Chambers in The Postman Always Rings Twice with the Sacramento Opera, Marcello in La Boheme with the Amherst Symphony Orchestra, baritone soloist in the Faure and Durufle Requiems at Carnegie Hall, and a return to the Utah Festival Opera in the summer of 2011 for the title role in Don Giovanni and Joe Cable in South Pacific. Mark’s versatility as a performer has lead to an array of unique projects such as Baz Luhrmann’s highly acclaimed production of La Boheme, in which he made his Broadway debut as Marcello. Engagements in 2009-2010 included Friedrich Bhaer in Little Women with Syracuse Opera, Marcello in La Boheme with Chattanooga Symphony and Opera and Escamillo in Carmen with Utah Festival Opera. In previous

Spectrum Artist program. Brandon was also a four-time Regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions. He was twice an apprentice artist with the prestigious Santa Fe Opera where he sang under the batons of Alan Gilbert and Evelino Pido. While singing with Santa Fe Opera, Brandon was given the Katherine Mayer Award and was engaged by New York City Opera. He was also chosen to cover both leading tenor roles in the world premiere of Charles Wuorinen’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories, based on a novel by Salman Rushdie. Brandon has Lindsey Falduto appeared in concert with John Moriarty (Dora) – A mezzoand was twice invited to Osaka, Japan soprano, Lindsey is to perform in a month-long series of quickly gaining Christmas concerts for Universal attention and critical Studios Japan. He returned to his native acclaim among many Virginia to create the role of Captain regional opera John Smith in the world premiere of companies across the United States. Lind Tutas-Haugen’s Pocahontas Highlights from her career include celebrating the 400th anniversary of Dido, Dido and Aeneas and Consuelo, Jamestown for the Virginia Arts Festival. In past seasons he has also appeared at Ashlawn Opera as Frank Butler, Henry Higgins, and King Arthur in Camelot. Recent concert work in NYC includes Schubert’s Winterreise at the Bechstein Salon and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with Grace and Spiritus. He has been singled out in the New York Times as a “rascally and irrepressible Top” in Bronx Opera’s The Tender Land and as “stentorian and stylish” in the role of Jehovah in the world premiere of Marc Blitzstein’s Cain. Danielle Hermon Wood (Despina) – Danielle is excited to be back at Skylight after performing here as Musetta in Skylight’s production of La Boheme and Dorine in Tartuffe. Throughout her career, Ms. Wood has been involved in many different arenas of the entertainment world. She has performed as a back up singer for Sting in his New York City XM Radio Concert, as a soprano soloist in Universal Studios Japan Christmas Concerts, in commercials for Sprint/Nextel, concert engagements as the soprano soloist with the Singapore Symphony in Handel’s Messiah as a soloist with Pittsburgh’s River City Brass Band. Other notable performances include Lucy in Opera Omaha’s production of Threepenny Opera, Narrator in the world premiere of Gershon Kingley’s Raoul at the Goethe Institute, NYC and Belle in Thea Musgrave’s A Christmas Carol with Virginia Opera. She has performed with the Santa Fe Opera in their apprentice scenes and has spent four summers with The Utah Festival Opera Company in such roles as The Baker’s Wife in Into The Woods, Electra in Gypsy, Susan in Desert Song, and Lizette in Naughty Marietta. Ms. Wood received her Bachelor of Fine Arts 8 Skylight Opera Theatre
from Carnegie Mellon University where she was the winner of the Concerto Competition. She went on to receive her Masters of Music from The Manhattan School of Music where she was awarded the Richard F. Gold Career Grant. Dimitri Toscas (Stage Director) – Dimitri is thrilled to be returning to Skylight (where he wrote and directed the new libretto for Verdi’s La Traviata and performed the role of the Padre in Man of LaMancha.) Toscas’ recent directing credits include: Plaid Tidings, Seussical, two productions of Sweeney Todd (one assistant directing at Cleveland Opera for Skylight’s own Bill Theisen); a critically-acclaimed La Boheme at Piedmont Opera; and two productions of H.M.S. Pinafore (one of which starred Kathy Pyeatt, whom you will see this evening live on stage!), as well as several other opera and musical theatre productions. Toscas garnered recognition for writing, directing and designing family productions at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank, CA, including: original musical adaptations of Cinderella! (based on the opera La Cenerentola), The Magic Flute (based on Mozart’s comedic opera, which starred Paul Vogt of MADtv and Broadway’s Hairspray) and an original musical version of The Little Mermaid, all commissioned and produced by celebrated film director Gary Marshall (Pretty Woman, Princess Diaries, Valentine’s Day). Toscas also served on an Entertainment Task Force that developed new shows for Walt Disney World’s EPCOT. Recent screenwriting credits include: Playboy (the Hugh Hefner bio-pic by writer John Hoffman for Universal Pictures), “American Envy” (a television pilot for Showtime) and the animated feature film Igor for MGM. Currently, Toscas is a freelance writer for the Development Department of Aardman Feature Animation in London, and is a founding member of the L.A.based performance group Acousa. Pasquale Laurino (Music Director) – Pasquale is celebrating the 30th anniversary of his career in music this season with conducting engagements throughout the Midwest including the world premiere of the Milwaukee Ballet’s critically acclaimed Peter Pan. Recently named artistic director and conductor of the Racine Symphony, his guest conducting appearances this season include the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, the Elmhurst Choral Union, the Sheboygan Symphony and the Skokie Valley Symphony. He served as the artistic director for five years of the chamber orchestra Sinfonia Concertante where he led concerts from the concertmaster position. He was appointed conductor and artistic director of the Concord Chamber Orchestra from 1987-1992. Maestro Laurino’s artistic home for over two decades has been Skylight, where he has conducted everything from the bel canto masterworks, LaCenerentola to Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Don Pasquale, The Abduction from the Seraglio and Lucia di Lammermoor to La Boheme and The King and I. In 2002, the Copland Opera, The Tender Land appeared on PBS with Maestro Laurino conducting and providing commentary during the intermission feature. In 2004 he conducted the premiere production of Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince directed by Francesca Zambello. Mr. Laurino is the associate conductor of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and regularly conducts the popular Nutcracker productions. He has been on the faculty of Carroll College, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley as conductor, violin/viola teacher and as a chamber music coach. Maestro Laurino currently resides in Chicago where his is a conductor with L’Opera Piccola and guest conductor of Light Opera Works. Mr. Laurino has participated in numerous festivals in Europe and the States including the Macerata Opera and Festivale della Valle d’Itria in Italy and the Gent Opera
Festival in Belgium. In 2005 he joined the faculty of the Rocky Ridge Music Festival as conductor and violinist. Ruben Piirainen (Assistant Music Director) – Ruben is thrilled to be back at Skylight after making his debut with H.M.S. Pinafore. He holds degrees in piano performance from Lawrence University and Bowling Green State University. He has worked with numerous local groups including Sunset Playhouse, Kenosha Symphony Orchestra, Present Music, Festival City Symphony, Waukesha Civic Theatre, Music by the Lake, and many top high school theatre programs. Singers around the world use his extensive recordings for Hal Leonard’s Singer’s Musical Theatre Anthology and Disney Songs series. He has performed in over 100 recitals across the country and made his international debut at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Ken Goldstein (Set Designer)* – Ken is delighted to return to Skylight (truly one of his favorite places) having designed past productions of Animal Crackers, Smokey Joe’s Café, and Blues in the Night. Ken is the Assistant Professor of Set Design at SUNY New Paltz, and Resident Set Designer at Northern Stage. He has also designed at Capital Rep, Barrington Stage Company, Orlando Rep, The New York Theatre Institute and Seaside Music Theater. New York includes numerous NYMF shows including this season’s POP Art, Trojan Women: A Love Story, Orestes by Chuck Mee, The Lady Next Door. MFA in Set Design from Brandeis University, member of United Scenic Artists, Local 829. Carol J. Kimberly Ann McCann (Production Stage Manager) – Kimberly is excited to be returning for her third show at Skylight after doing Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and Dames at Sea. Her regional credits include: A Civil War Christmas at Northlight Theatre (Chicago), Million Dollar Quartet (Chicago). Broadway credits: Curtains. Off-Broadway credits include: Bill W. and Dr. Bob, How to Save the World, John Ferguson. Other credits include: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (San Francisco); Door Shakespeare’s The Rivals, Much Ado About Nothing; Illinois Shakespeare Festival’s Titus Andronicus; four productions at Colorado Shakespeare Festival; toured with ArtsPower National Touring Theatre and numerous productions at The Juilliard School. Kimberly is a graduate of Illinois State University and is a proud member of Actor’s Equity. Lillian Tillson (Assistant Stage Manager) – Lillian is happy to be joining Skylight for her second season as Assistant Stage Manager. Past Skylight credits include: Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris; H.M.S. Pinafore; An Evening with Gilbert & Sullivan; Barber of Seville; The Marriage of Figaro; Plaid Tidings and A Day in Hollywood /A Night in the Ukraine. It is meant to provide in-depth background information about the show, including information on the composer and author, source material, historical perspective on the setting, and information about the Skylight directors, designers and performers. The guide is available on our website and in the lobby of the theatre. Bad Weather Policy...Skylight does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds. Johnson Bank Cabaret Series...Friday and Saturday evening performances in the Cabot Theatre are followed by a free, 45-minute cabaret show in the Skylight Bar & Bistro. There is not a cabaret performance on opening night. Emergency Contact…If you need to be contacted during the performance, an emergency number is available for your convenience: (414) 908-6645. This extension is a message center for the house manager. Please leave your seat location so we may contact you. Food and Drink...Skylight Bar & Bistro, located on the second floor of the Broadway Theatre Center, is a full-service bar with a pre-theatre dinner menu open two hours before Cabot Theatre performances, at intermission and after performances with the exception of Sunday evenings. For reservations, call Kafevino at (414) 224-4900. Group Discounts...Groups of 10 or more are eligible for our group discount. Make your event unique and ask about our rental spaces for a pre- or post-show reception with cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres, dinner or dessert. Lost and Found...Leave a message with the House Manager at (414) 908-6645 to check if lost articles have been found. Parking...Convenient, free or low-cost parking is available in several locations. Metered street parking throughout the Historic Third Ward is free after 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays. The Italian Community Center parking lot, three blocks east of the theatre at Jackson and Menomonee streets, is free after 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays; daytime parking is also available for a small fee. Structure parking is available for a small fee in the Third Ward parking structures located at Chicago and Milwaukee streets (two blocks east) and Chicago and Water streets (two blocks west). Recording Equipment & Cameras...The use of recording devices and/or photography is strictly prohibited in the theatre during a performance. Skylight tickets are available for purchase online at www.skylightopera.com — 24 hours a day/7 days a week! Ticket Exchanges… Season tickets may be exchanged for tickets to another performance of the same production by mail, fax, or in person, up to 48 hours in advance of a performance. Reservations for ticket exchanges may not be made less than 48 hours in advance of the original performance date. Subscribers and single ticket holders who lose their tickets may contact the box office for duplicates; seating locations are on record. All sales are final. Ticket Donations...Ticket holders who are unable to use their tickets may donate them for resale and receive a receipt for a tax-deductible contribution. Just ask the box office for a contribution receipt. Tickets are not refundable, nor may the ticket value be applied to future ticket sales or outstanding pledges.
