A M E S S AG E F R O M S TAG E D I R E C TO R - D O N N A D R A K E Welcome to the neighborhood of Avenue Q, just slightly off the beaten track. The neighborhood is filled with fun-loving, zany and down to earth characters. Outrageous and explosive moments abound but beneath all of that are people who live day to day with sincere hearts, honesty and a simple joy of life. Whether puppet or human…all are real, all are alive. The art form of puppetry is a unique and disciplined craft. The actor and the puppet must become one entity not only physically but also emotionally. The actor is responsible to breathe life into the puppet and to humanize it… to impart heart, humor and truthful feelings. “There’s a fine, fine line between reality and pretend; and you’ll never know till you reach the top if it was worth the uphill climb.”

A M E S S AG E F R O M A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R - B I L L T H E I S E N I remember seeing Avenue Q for the first time on Broadway and thinking how great it would be to bring the show to the Skylight- not only because it’s one of the funniest and most entertaining things I have ever seen in New York, but because underneath all the humor and madness there was so much heart. I found myself truly caring about the journey of these characters and relating to the ups and downs in their lives because we have all been there…it doesn’t matter if you’re flesh or felt! As I begin my final season as artistic director of Skylight Music Theatre I have been thinking about the ups and downs of the last 9 years during my tenure here and realizing how incredibly fortunate I have been to have this experience. I think it is safe to say that no other music theatre company in the world will be producing both Avenue Q and The Gershwins’ Porgy & Bess this season. That is something that is uniquely Skylight. And I welcome and encourage you to join us for every thrilling moment that we have planned in this our 54th year from our first ever country music show Pump Boys and Dinettes to a brand new revue of the work of Skylights’ favorite team Gilbert and Sullivan with Here’s a Howdy Do; from the brilliant minds of cabaret team Jack Forbes Wilson and Kay Stiefel in Sing Me a Story to greatest chanteuse of them all in Edith Piaf Onstage; and last, but certainly not least, to one of Broadways most beloved musicals, The Sound of Music playing in the Cabot Theatre for the very first time. Seven captivating productions. Seven distinctive points of view. A single company able to bring you this one-of-a kind theatrical experience. That is Skylight Music Theatre.

A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E M A N AG I N G D I R E C TO R - A M Y S . J E N S E N Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre’s 2012-2013 season and our production of Avenue Q. We are so thrilled with the support we have received for this production. From a strong partnership with the ACLU of Wisconsin to new sponsorships from The Cream City Foundation and Harley-Davidson Motor Company, we are exceptionally proud of the resounding community excitement for Avenue Q and thankful for the support of these new partners. This season will be an exciting one for many reasons. First, Bill Theisen has put together a wonderful line up for his final season as Artistic Director and will direct the last two shows of the season, including the highly anticipated The Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess which has never before been performed at Skylight. Patron response to our 2012-13 season has been tremendous this year and we have already exceeded many of our initial subscription goals. Tickets were hard to come by last year for several of our productions and subscribing is the best way to ensure you don’t miss out. If you aren’t already a subscriber, it is not too late! 2012-13 Season tickets are still available through our box office by calling 414-291-7800. At the same time that we celebrate Bill’s amazing work over the past nine years, we are also happy to welcome our new Artistic Director beginning with the 2013-2014 season. We were delighted earlier this month to announce Viswa Subbaraman as Skylight’s new Artistic Director. Viswa brings a wonderful combination of a deep respect for Skylight, its history and the full spectrum of music theatre we strive to produce every year with a fresh way of thinking and talking about music theatre. During the year-long process to find our next Artistic Director, we have been excited and inspired by Viswa’s ideas for creating memorable musical theatre experiences and we look forward to introducing him more to Milwaukee over the coming year. Finally, Skylight and the entire Milwaukee arts community bid a sad farewell in August to a dear friend, Ed Doemland. Ed was a church organist, percussionist, jazz pianist and retired chemistry teacher who attended as many productions around town as he could. In addition to attending Skylight productions (usually multiple times), he would unhesitatingly share his musical talents with Skylight if a need arose. Bill and I talked recently about choosing a show this season that would have been Ed’s favorite to dedicate to him. Because his taste was as wide-ranging as our repertoire, we knew we’d never be able to narrow it down it just one. And so, in memory of Ed, we lovingly dedicate the entire 2012-13 Season to him.
