Edith Piaf Onstage

A M E S S AG E F R O M S TAG E D I R E C TO R - J I M B U TC H A R T Leslie first sang a Piaf song in a French revue entitled A Propos de Paris for Skylight during Bastille Days in 1987. Recognizing her affinity for the music she and Colin Cabot put together the first incarnation of Edith Piaf Onstage which played the next year for Bastille Days and was profitable enough to buy Skylight its first computerized lighting board. Since then the show has expanded and changed, having been performed in various locations, including the old Skylight and the studio space in the Broadway Theatre Center, as well as in cut down cabaret or concert versions for groups around town. The current incarnation is much expanded including more songs and more of Piaf’s life. What is it that makes Piaf’s music so enduring? Of course it was Piaf herself who sang from the heart about the life she knew in a simple clear style that focused on the truth of her emotions, leaving no place to hide. But, to a great degree, it is also the songs she chose to sing. Piaf was very particular about the songs she sang, insisting that they fit her, that she had an emotional connection to each song. She would often work with composers to shape the song to her liking. Each one is dramatic; a little play that builds the music and the lyric to an emotional climax that transcends language to take the listener with the singer on a journey that shows the world through a different set of eyes.
A M E S S AG E F R O M A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R - B I L L T H E I S E N Jean Cocteau said of Edith Piaf, “When I say that Mme. Edith Piaf is a genius I mean she is unique. There has never been another like her… and there never will be. Like the nightingale, Edith Piaf explores herself and her audience; quickly, she finds her voice. In the voice is the whole of the woman; it unfolds itself like a wave of black velvet. This wave of warmth submerges us…wraps itself around us. The illusion is complete. And at this moment, the genius of Mme. Edith Piaf is seen and acknowledged by all.” Edith Piaf remains quite possibly the greatest female entertainer of the 20th century and I have long wanted to bring her life and music to the stage of the Cabot Theatre. Leslie Fitzwater has been associated with Skylight for more than 30 years and I have had the privilege of witnessing her journey with Edith Piaf beginning back in 1987. Rarely have I seen a performance as mesmerizing and complete as Leslie Fitzwater portraying Edith Piaf. It is also thrilling that this current and final incarnation of Edith Piaf Onstage is the most fully realized version of the show ever presented. This exciting and remarkable marriage of Edith Piaf and Leslie Fitzwater has come full circle as we celebrate both of these unique, and to borrow from Jean Cocteau, “genius” women.
A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E M A N AG I N G D I R E C TO R - A M Y S . J E N S E N Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre and our production of Edith Piaf Onstage. In the spirit of the full spectrum of music theatre that Skylight embraces and showcases every season, we now switch gears from one of the biggest of all possible shows with The Sound of Music to one of the most wonderfully intimate evenings we could imagine. We are so delighted to have Leslie Fitzwater back for this long anticipated production. It is sure to be not only an exquisite tribute to Edith Piaf and her music but also a celebration of Leslie, her tour de force performance and of her long history with Skylight. This production marks the one year anniversary of our wonderful partnership with Indulge Wine Rooms in our Skylight Bar and Bistro. It has been such a pleasure working with owners Marc and Marta Bianchini and their incredible staff. I hope you have had the opportunity to plan an evening to include both dinner and a show here at the Broadway Theatre Center. But, if you haven’t, I can’t recommend it highly enough – especially the mushroom brie soup! Thank you so much for coming and best wishes for the new year! 2

WHO’S WHO Leslie Fitzwater (Edith Piaf) - Leslie Fitzwater has been acting and singing professionally for 30 years and has performed with the Milwaukee Symphony, Racine Symphony, Florentine Opera, Skylight Music Theatre, Present Music, Milwaukee Dance Theatre and Milwaukee Choral Artists. Leslie has had a multifaceted career spanning opera, theater, music theater, cabaret, and mime, and her roles have been as diverse as Paddington Bear and Carmen. While Leslie has played her share of well known characters such as Desiree Armfeldt (A Little Night Music), Golda (Fiddler on the Roof), Fraulein Schneider (Cabaret), Agnes (I Do, I Do), Irma (Irma La Douce) and Marmie (Little Women), her real passion is being in on the ground floor of new works. Leslie sang in workshops for James Valcq’s enormously popular Spitfire Grill, she recorded selections from Josh Schmidt’s new musical based on Candida, and was in world premier performances of Dark Pony by Don St. Pierre, Songs of the Woman D’Este and Songs of the Portuguese by Sigmund Snopek III and Ballymore (which aired on PBS) by Richard Wargo. Ms Fitzwater is best known, however, for her portrayal of the French chanteuse Edith Piaf. Leslie has been a private voice and acting coach, has given seminars on vocal production for the young singer, has taught Voice and Speech at First Stage Theatre Academy and is an adjunct voice faculty member at Pius XI High School. Jim Butchart (Stage Director) - An actor, director and teacher for the past 35 years, Jim received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Professional Actor Training Program at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee in 1981. His directing credits include: Woyzeck for Milwaukee Dance Theatre, Two Rooms for In Tandem Theatre, 4

He has also performed with The Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Chamber Theater, Utah Shakespeare Festival, First Stage Milwaukee, Pheasant Run Theater, Equity Library Theater, Theater Tesseract and Theatre Gigante. Jim is Head of the BFAPerformance program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he has directed over 50 musicals, operas and plays. Paula is a founding member and composer-in-residence of the only professional women’s vocal ensemble in the Midwest, the Milwaukee Choral Artists. Several of her compositions will be featured in MCA’s March 2013 Memories concert. Her compositions and arrangements have been performed throughout the US and Canada, and can be found in the catalogs of Hal Leonard Publishing Co., Alliance Publishing Co., and Santa Barbara Music Press. She is the winner of the 2008 Joe Shepley Choral Composition Competition (Namasté Women’s Choir, LA, CA).
