A M E S S AG E F R O M S TAG E D I R E C TO R - M O L LY R H O D E My father took my mother to The Sound of Music on their first date in 1965. It proved to be a good choice on his part, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Edelweiss became one of my dad’s most sung lullabies to my sisters and me. People all around the globe have personal anecdotes about their experience with The Sound of Music. It is arguably the most famous musical of all-time; these songs and this story have become part of our cultural consciousness. Who would have thought that nuns, Nazis, and children would be the ingredients for a story that has proven irresistible for generations? One of the reasons I think it has worked so well for so long is the marriage of truth and fiction in this piece. On one hand, The Sound of Music is a fairytale. Maria’s is a true Cinderella story. An orphan girl finds herself married to a prince (well, a Captain) and overcomes all her obstacles with creative pluck. The story has very clear villains and very clear heroes. We know precisely who to root for. Yet, all the while, we know that this story is based in truth. The von Trapps are a real family who were placed right at the tipping point of one of the most volatile periods of modern history. This knowledge makes the story all the more satisfying. We recognize their fierce bravery and we desire to find their strong moral compass in our own journeys. The Sound of Music, at its core, is a love story--romantic love matched equally by love of family and love of country. It has been a privilege to work with the Skylight family and Skylight’s largest ever-assembled cast to fill the Cabot Theatre to the brim with every glorious note of this gorgeous score. It is with over-flowing hearts that we offer this production to you.
A M E S S AG E F R O M T H E M A N AG I N G D I R E C TO R - A M Y S . J E N S E N Welcome to Skylight Music Theatre. For the second year in a row we are delighted to bring you a classic, American musical for the entire family – and one which Skylight has never produced before in its history. With this production, we are thrilled to welcome back Molly Rhode in her Skylight directorial debut! We would like to thank Baird Private Asset Management for their generous sponsorship of The Sound of Music. Baird has been a wonderful partner and sponsor for several seasons now and we are so grateful for their support and for all they do in the community. You can be a wonderful part of supporting Skylight by participating in our Play a Supporting Role campaign for The Sound of Music. You will find inserts in your program with all of the details of how you can sponsor one or more of the wonderful characters and/or artists in this production. It is not too late to support your favorites and join us for a festive cast party on Sunday, December 30 following the performance. Don’t forget that Friday and Saturday nights following our performances, the entertainment keeps on coming with a free Cabaret performance in our Skylight Bar. During the run of The Sound of Music we welcome Alison Mary Forbes and Brian Myers to the Cabaret. Alison most recently was part of the terrific cast of our sold-out production of Avenue Q. Please be sure to keep Skylight in mind for gift ideas during this holiday season. Tickets to The Sound of Music or any of our upcoming productions this season would make a unique and special gift for family and friends. In addition to The Sound of Music, our season includes a new tribute to Gilbert and Sullivan with Here’s a Howdy Do written and directed by Dale Gutzman, Edith Piaf Onstage featuring Leslie Fitzwater, our first county musical Pump Boys and Dinettes, Sing Me a Story, a night of Broadway song and story with Milwaukee favorites Jack Forbes Wilson and Kay Stiefel and we end the season with the great American masterpiece, The Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess, directed by Bill Theisen. A gift of tickets will make anyone’s night sing! 2
