BIOGR APHIES Emerging from a college course, Chapter 6 became the premier jazz a cappella ensemble at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois and were crowned the 2001 International Champions of Collegiate A Cappella. When most of its members had graduated by that same year, the group took a leap of faith directly into the professional market in January 2002. Chapter 6 has received numerous awards and recognition for their technique, performance, and unique, original arrangements. Three-time Chicago Regional Harmony Sweepstakes Grand Champions—their first title in 2000 distinguishing them as the youngest group ever to qualify for the national finals—Chapter 6 went on to win the prestigious Grand Champion title at the 2004 National Harmony Sweepstakes. Other special honors have been awarded by such notable organizations as the Contemporary A Cappella Society, the National Association for Campus Activities, and the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities. In 2005, Chapter 6 was chosen “Entertainer of the Year” at the APCA National Convention and received four 2005 A Cappella Community Awards including Favorite Jazz Group and Favorite Arranger, Mark Grizzard. Most recently, the group was named a finalist for the 2007 Campus Activities Magazine Readers Choice Award for Best Small Venue Performer. Their four albums: A cappella 101, Chapter 6: Live, Christmastime, and Swing Shift have sold over 30,000 copies worldwide. Their latest release, Swing Shift, received three nominations for the 2005 Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards— “The Wizard Of Oz” capturing the award for Best Humor Song. Their much-anticipated live DVD, Chapter 6 In Concert, was released in December 2005. As Chapter 6 continues touring diverse venues, enthusiastically received by audiences across the United States and Canada, their reputation continues to grow internationally. Their extensive touring schedule includes numerous college campuses and high schools where performances are often linked with a master class, clinic, or rehearsal led by the uniquely equipped and qualified members of the group. Equally at home in the concert hall, Chapter 6 is currently performing The Symphonic Pops Consortium’s “1950’s: The Golden Age Of Black And White” with symphony orchestras in a number of major cities including Indianapolis, Seattle, Naples, Detroit, Toronto, Nashville and Washington, D.C. They are looking forward to the June 2008 premiere of a 1970’s program with the SPC as well as their first overseas tour to Hong Kong in January 2008. The group’s versatility and appeal knows no bounds, capturing audiences of all ages and musical tastes. Their comedy-infused blend of pop, jazz, gospel and rock brings spontaneous bursts of laughter and applause throughout the show. High-energy performances feature diverse repertoire ranging from freshly arranged swing standards and pop/rock covers, to signature pieces such as “Ode To Krispy Kreme,” Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Chapter 6’s very own version of “The Wizard Of Oz.” In addition to exceptional musicianship, audiences experience Chapter 6’s contagious energy and spirit as they share great music, harmony and the message of God’s hope and love. Chapter 6 is in the studio (as their schedule allows) working on material for their next CD. They are also pursuing opportunities in the jingle market, recently completing work on a jingle package for national radio play in Canada. Conveying their incredible sound and irrepressible charisma as effectively in the studio as on stage, Chapter 6 has appeared on numerous regional, national, and international television and radio programs including ABC Television’s Good Morning America and The Kathy & Judy Show (WGN Radio, Chicago). For more information on Chapter 6—music videos, tour dates, album releases, journals and news—visit the group’s website: www.chapter6.com. South Milwaukee PAC 3

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) Chapter 6 is Chuck Bosworth, Mark Grizzard, Jarrett Johnson, Luke Menard, John Musick, Nathan Pufall, and A.D. Stonecipher. NATHAN PUFALL – “POOFY” My life with Chapter 6 began my sophomore year of college. I was studying musical theatre at the time and thought singing in an a cappella group would be a nice outlet from those wild and crazy drama kids. Little did I know what I was getting myself into…! Now here I am touring around the country with six of my best friends. I never in my years of growing up thought I would be making a living singing a cappella music. Through the fault of my parents, I grew up with plenty of music in the house. My dad would play the piano while my brother, sister and I danced and sang around the living room. My mom would sing us to sleep. They are probably my biggest musical influences. Nowadays I listen to a lot of funky music. For example, artists such as Phish, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Little Horse, Bobby Llama, Steely Dan, Basement Chemistry, Earth Wind and Fire and Ralph Vaughan Williams keep me tapping my feet. JOHN MUSICK – “JOHNNY MUZAK” I have always been involved in music. Ever since I was a toddler I have been singing and figuring musical stuff out in my head. I really feel like music is just something that is me. I don’t have to make myself think through or toil with the music that I am working on at the time. That process of trying to get better and more analytical is something that I can’t avoid. College was a wonderful time for me. I was a Music Education major and although class hours were numerous, I had time to make some lifelong friends, sing, perform all I want, and be in Chapter 6. Some people would tell you to be specific about what you involve yourself in, and that’s true to a point. I would say involve yourself in as many things you find interest in and worth

while, but stay sane. Another piece of advice I would give is question every habit and belief that you have. You will only be stronger, wiser and more faithful if you were right to begin with. And if you weren’t, you’ll be glad that you sharpened yourself. Family and friends are the most important thing on the earth that I have. I love my parents, sister, and all of my friends, especially the C6 guys, with all of my heart. LUKE MENARD I started singing when I was a freshman in high school. I always enjoyed listening to the sounds of a cappella groups such as Take 6 and Rockapella, but never imagined I would be making those sounds for a living. I played the violin for 6 years as a child and now that I sing a cappella, I only imitate with my voice what a violin might sound like. It was great training. I enjoy traveling with Chapter 6 throughout the year although I have been jaded when my family asks me to go on vacation. My idea of a good vacation is being at home for at least one week, watching movies on surround sound, making smoothies, working out at the same gym and sleeping in my own bed as I fall asleep playing Xbox. AD STONECIPHER – “STONEY” I can fondly remember the day when John and I began reorganizing the band to save it from extinction. Never did I dream that Chapter 6 would grow from a fraternal order to an international act. Nor did I expect to grow a family bond with these men, as they continue to keep me accountable in my journey, whether it be spiritually, artistically or professionally. Looking back, I can only give God the credit, as we took a leap of faith upon graduation, against all odds and advice, to dive into the music industry. I am thankful that we followed the tug upon our hearts, in spite of the personal sacrifices that we faced. My sacrifice came in the form of my dreams. I’d spent the

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) last seven years training myself as an actor. I was devoted to my craft and my pursuit for glory. I was following my passion… However, after college, the guys traveled out to see me. We sang, laughed and dreamed together. I realized that Chapter 6 had something I couldn’t find in my pursuits: sincere fellowship. Plus, I realized that we could accomplish more, both spiritually and artistically, as an ensemble, rather than as individuals. JARRETT JOHNSON – “LIL STEVIE” It was a childhood dream of mine to sing and surprisingly I’ve been blessed to take part in this experiment for 10 years. As an original member of this group in 1997, I’ve seen God take us through the mountains and the valleys and we’ve learned so much from every experience. I’m thankful for the spiritual, musical and professional maturity we’ve attained and look forward to what awaits our future. I would love to possess a renais-

sance man distinction, but to be more accurate I am simply interested in a myriad of activities. I enjoy studying the Word, spending time with my wife, family gatherings, working out, writing and listening to music. I also take great pride in being a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., one of the most elite service organizations in the world. “Many are called, but few are phrozen!” CHUCK BOSWORTH – “CHUCKLES” Greetings one and all. I cover all the weird middle notes in the chords we sing. I also do a little vocal percussion here and there. So when you sum it all up: I sing random notes and make weird sounds with my mouth for a living. I come from Ingleside, IL, a booming metropolis on the WI/IL border that is home to some of the largest skyscrapers in the world. Just like the rest of these guys, I graduated from Millikin University in Decatur, IL. I studied vocal performance, Music Ed, Musical Theater

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) and graduated with a History degree. Back in ‘01, I started as the booking manager for Chapter 6, but now we have brilliant people that take care of that for us and I fulfill the road manager duties. I’m hoping we can bring somebody on to do this job, too, sometime soon… for free… MARK GRIZZARD – “GRIZZ” Boy, I never thought I’d ever be making a living through acapela music (I mean look; I can’t even spell acapela). I went to college to study classical music and I spent most of my time practicing piano, playing in orchestras and studying music theory. I arranged a couple of songs for Chapter 6 and soon they were asking me to arrange more and fill in at concerts. By graduation I was a fulltime member, and now it’s my job and I’m having a blast! Chapter 6 has been a great opportunity for me to grow as a musician, as a businessman and as a Christian. I get to travel the country with all my college

buddies and make music that reaches all kinds of people, can’t beat that. When I have free time I would like to exercise, watch football and play the piano, but I’ll let you know when that happens. I guess my advice is to be friendly and respectful to everyone all the time so that they feel like listening to what you have to say. BROCK THORNBOROUGH Brock is a professional vocalist and studio singer. He has been blessed to sing on hundreds of CDs as a background vocalist for artists such as Johnny Mathis, Sandi Patty, Ray Boltz and The Gaither Homecoming Video series. He has lent his voice to several national radio and television commercials for Afflac, Round-Up, Ford Trucks and Firestone Tires. He lives in Indiana with his wife and daughter. The newest member of Chapter 6, Brock is pulling down tenor duties while Luke Menard is on hiatus.

D I D YO U K N OW ?  2009-2010 marked the 6th Anniversary of our existence and the 5th Anniversary of our Performing Arts Series.  Audiences have tripled in size to an average of 600 per performance in the past 5 years.  Our annual season has grown from 4 shows in 2005-2006 to 11 shows in 2010-2011. Six performances have been completely sold-out.  The SMPAC has some of the finest natural acoustics in Wisconsin and is one of the favorite halls in which the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra likes to perform. The SMPAC is one of the favorite theatres for artists to perform in due to our exceptional hospitality and wonderful audiences. All artists who have performed here have requested to return.  The SMPAC has hosted artists such as Arlo Guthrie, John McGivern, Missoula Children’s Theatre, The Jonas Brothers, Guy & Ralna and Slim Goodbody. We have had artists from across the country and from China, Poland and Austria.  The SMPAC is a rental home for several dance studios, choral groups (including Cantare Chorale), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Jr. Miss and many more regional and national artists and organizations.  Often artists that perform here provide master classes, clinics, performances and workshops for the students in South Milwaukee. When possible, the students have the opportunity to perform with the artists, such as the Dallas Brass and Alpin Hong, on stage during the public performance.  The average cost of one artist/show in our season costs $10,000.  Besides artist fees, the SMPAC covers the cost of advertising, hotel rooms, meals, transportation and equipment rental for our artists. We occasionally need to hire additional technical staff for productions. When all expenses are added up, the average cost of a show is $15,000.  On average—ticket sales cover 90% of the cost of a performance; 40% of our entire budget is covered by ticket sales; rental revenues account for 10% of our entire budget.  SMPAC is a nonprofit organization. A Board of Directors oversee the organization of the SMPAC—assisting in planning performing arts series, educational outreach, publicity and the on-going operation of the Center.  Donations and bequests from patrons like you and fundraising events are vital to our existence and providing quality arts entertainment. All donations are tax deductible.  Volunteers are always welcome and needed to help the SMPAC office and to assist patrons at performances. Currently there are 85 Smart Corp members.  Keep informed of upcoming events—send us your email. (If you do not have email we can add you to our mailing list!) If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Chad Piechocki, Director of the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center at cpiechocki@sdsm.k12.wi.us or at 414-766-5048.
