LA PASIÓN LATINA BAILES DE IDA Y VUELTA Choreography: Antonio Hidalgo Since the first migrations from Spain to Latin America, the music of both cultures have blended to infuse Flamenco with Caribbean, Latino and Afro-Latino sounds. With the rising popularity of norteño from Mexico, salsa from Cuba and Puerto Rico, cumbia from Colombia, crossover pop music such as reggaeton and the expanding popularity of flamenco, Bailes de Ida y Vuelta continues the ongoing metamorphosis of the traditional flamenco music and dance with newer Latin influences. Originally staged in 1993 at the Joyce Theater, Bailes de Ida y Vuelta (round-trip dances) makes a geographic journey through the Americas rich with the experiences of “flamenco puro” whose early influences are rooted in the Jewish, Arab, and Gypsy cultures through to the ‘New World’ influences. Bailes de Ida y Vuelta was was made possible by grants from the ArtWorks program of The National Endowment for the Arts Colombianas The Company First performed in the mid-1930’s by famed singer Pepe Marchena, the Colombianas are a true Spanish form of cante infused with the festive “inspiración” of Latin America. Milonga Dancer: Julia Chacón The Milonga is a flamenco form brought to Spain by farmers, artists, bullfighters and soldiers in the 19th Century returning from the “Americas. Vidalita - Farruca Dancers: Antonio Hidalgo, Leslie Roybal, Pablo Fraile Similar to its Argentinean counterpart, vidalita, is akin to the Milonga whose verses have an amorous and soulful quality. This is paired with the Farruca, a dance from Asturias in Northern Spain, which was altered and became part of the flamenco repertoire. Guajiras Dancers: Julia Chacón, Leslie Roybal, Illeana Gomez Spanish immigrants in Cuba were often referred to as “guajiras”. A flamenco version of a Cuban rhythm of the same name brought back to Spain in the 16th Century. At the same time sensuous and sweet, this form evokes the aire of this tropic island. Rumba/Salsa The Company Influenced by Afro-Cuban rhythms, Rumba is fast, lively and percussive. Often seen as the finale, Rumba exemplifies the bridging of cultures between the Cuban Salsa and flamenco modalities.

LA PASIÓN FLAMENCA Mujeres The Company “Mujeres” demonstrates flamenco traditions within a contemporary context. The work highlights the traditional elements used by women in flamenco dance- the castanets, fans and shawls and how the bata de cola (dress with a train) is used in both traditional and contemporary flamenco. This traditional costume was once only used as stately attire, but the modern female dancer uses this costume in new ways: as a partner, as defense/offense against the male dancer, and as a “toy” to play with and express humor and lightness. Mujeres was made possible by a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts Tientos Duet Dancers: Julia Chacón and Antonio Hidalgo or Leslie Roybal and Pablo Fraile This 4/4 rhythm dance is majestic and sensual. The sometimes slow wiry movements let the dancers express emotions easily. Alegrías Antonio Hidalgo or Pablo Fraile The Alegrías were originated in the seaport of Cadiz. The word Alegrías means joy or happiness, and the songs are light and carefree in spirit. They can express great intensity of feeling yet the mood is optimistic and high-spirited. Fin De Fiesta/Bulerías The Company The name Bulerías comes from “burlar” or to make fun. The flamenco party ends “por Bulerías”, a “jam session” in which everyone takes their turn to “show their stuff”. The baile por Bulerías (bulerías dance) is one of the most vivacious and difficult dances, and requires a great deal of gracia (grace) and sense of rhythm. Program subject to change

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder and Artistic Director) has been designated “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine in recognition of her commitment to creating new works and developing young artists and choreographers. She has dedicated her company to the mission of building bridges between cultures, using the universal spirit of Flamenco. The company was founded in 1983 by Carlota Santana and Roberto Lorca; it was their vision that new Spanish dance should not only find a permanent home in the U.S., but also an environment in which its creation and performance would thrive. Under Ms. Santana’s direction, the company has expanded its repertory by presenting new music, dramatic works, and a mixture of various dance vocabularies, as well as by integrating Hispanic-American influences. Recent creations include Bailes de Ida y Vuelta, flamenco’s journey through Latin America, Mano a Mano, a tribute to the bullfighter Manolete, and the contemporary flamenco story-ballet Federico, a celebration of the life of Federico García Lorca, all at The Joyce Theater where the company performs an annual season. Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with the school curriculum, and has traveled widely implementing this program. She is a member of the dance panel for the New York State Council on the Arts and has served on the panel for the National Endowment for the Arts. She is on the faculty of Duke University and has taught at Long Island and New York Universities. Ms. Santana is a recent recipient of a Choreographer fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council and is a member of the North Carolina Dance Alliance. Under her artistic direction, the company has performed at Lincoln Center, The Joyce Theater, The New Victory Theater, Summerdance Santa Barbara, Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, Van Wezel Performing Arts Center in Sarasota, Universidad Bucaramanga in Colombia, South America, Palacio de Congresos in Granada, Spain, Discovery Theatre in Anchorage, Alaska, Leid Center in Lawrence, Kansas, Paul Poag Theatre in Del Rio, Texas, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art among many others. ANTONIO HIDALGO (Associate Artistic Director, Dancer, and Choreographer) was born in the town of Lucena (Córdoba) Spain, and has worked with many various companies throughout his professional career. These include the companies of Jose Anto-

nio, Paco Romero, Jose Greco and Antonio Gades where he danced the principal role of Escamillo. He has collaborated with companies such as that of Maria Benitez, Masamy Okada and Yolanda Gonzalez as well as various flamenco-fusion groups such as Konraza and Arickytwon. Hidalgo has appeared on Spanish television and theatre having worked with directors such as Miguel Naros, Salvador Tavara and Antonio Molero. In partnership with Inmaculada Ortega, he directs the Company Aroma Flamenca. He has received commissions from the New York State Council on the Arts for his acclaimed pieces “Mano a Mano” and “Bailaor/Bailaora” and Imagenes Flamencas which toured nationally and premiered in New York at The Joyce Theater in 2001 and 2002 and 2006 respectively. Most recently Antonio has been working as rehearsal director and performer with the Fundación Antonio Gades whose mission is to preserve the legacy of this most famous Spanish choreographer. JULIA CHACÓN (Dancer) extensively trained in ballet, Julia first studied Spanish dance under Lydia Torea, with whom she was performing by age 16. Later, she attended the University of New Mexico and received her BFA in dance, magna cum laude. She continued her studies in Madrid, Spain at Amor de Dios where she trained under maestros El Ciro, Manuel Reyes, Rafaela Carrasco, and Belen Maya. Julia has been a company member of Omayra Amaya Flamenco Sin Limites (Boston) and Maria Benitez Teatro Flamenco (Santa Fe), with whom she was principal female dancer. She has performed in various American tablaos including Pepin and the Hyatt in Scottsdale, Alegria in Long Beach, ODC in San Francisco, and Pipa in New York City. Julia founded her own troupe, Inspiracíon Flamenca, in 2008 and her choreography has been performed at the Shanghai Opera House in China as well as throughout the United States. She has taught at the New School for the Arts (AZ), Moving People Dance (NM) and the Institute for Spanish Arts (NM). LESLIE ROYBAL (Dancer), a native of New Mexico, began her career at age 5 performing with a Mexican folkloric dance company. She earned a BFA in theater from Stephens College, and continued her education at the University of New Mexico, where she studied Contemporary Dance and Flamenco. Proficient in both the Contemporary dance and Flamenco idioms, Leslie continues her studies in New York and Spain. She performs in many of the New York tablaos, is the Director of Murray Spalding Mandalas and South Milwaukee PAC 5


WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY (CONT.) has appeared in La Traviata and Carmen at The Metropolitan Opera in addition to performing and teaching with Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana. Most recently she has been a part of the creation of a new dance work, “El Proceso/The Process”, choreographed by renowned flamenco artist Rosario Toledo to be presented in the September 2011 Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe and the First Philadelphia Flamenco Festival in March/ April of 2012. ILLEANA GOMEZ (Dancer) began her dance training in her native town of Laredo, Texas. In 2006 she relocated to Albuquerque, NM to study at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts under the direction of Joaquin Encinias. In 2010 she received her MFA in dance from the University of New Mexico. Since then she has gained professional experience working in tablaos throughout New Mexico, Texas and New York as well as with Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company, Theresa Cardenas Theater Company and Juan Siddi Flamenco Company with whom she was a soloist. In addition to sharing the stage with accomplished artists such as Silverio Heredia, Coral de Los Reyes, Jose Valle “Chuscales”, Saray Muñoz, Pedro Cortez and Jesule de Utrera, Illeana frequently studies at Amor de Dios in Madrid and various schools in Sevilla. PABLO FRAILE (Dancer) began his studies in music and dance in his native town of Guadalajara, Spain. In 1999 he was a finalist for the prize “VEO VEO” which took place in El Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Asturias. Soon thereafter he moved to Madrid and began studying at the Madrid Conservatorio de Danza y Música and with Antonio Canales, Alfonso Losa and Miguel Caña, among others. Pablo also won the coveted prize “La Calahorra Flamenca” in Cordoba. He has performed throughout Spain, China, Russia, South America and toured Japan with Javier Latorre. He is currently a member of the Compañía de Antonio Canales, Compañía Tito Lozano. JAVIER NAVARRO (Guitarist) began his studies in his native Cordoba with “Merengue de Córdoba.” He received a scholarship from the Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville and there studied with Manolo Franco, Miguel Ochando, Paco Serrano, among others. He has worked as assistant professor with dancers and singers such as: Milagros Menjibar, Paco Taranto, Javier Baron and Rafael Campallo. In 1999 he won the first prize for accompaniment of guitar for the competition “Jóvenes Flamencos de Córdo6 South Milwaukee PAC

ba”. Javier has toured world wide with such renowned Companies as Antonio Márquez, Javier Latorre. and Domingo Ortega. He has performed at tablaos in Barcelona, Seville, Cordoba and Tokyo and worked with the Company of Yoko Komatsubara” in Japan. He has also been part of “experimental 4deStar,” performing in Madrid. GASPAR RODRIGUEZ (Guitarist) first worked with Flamenco Vivo in 1997. He has traveled throughout Spain, Europe and in New York City with Cañadú and served as first guitarist as well as composer for El Nuevo Ballet Español under the direction of Angel Rojas. In addition to touring worldwide with many of today’s top flamenco artists, Gaspar performs in Madrid tablaos such as Casa Patas and Las Carboneras. He won the “Sabicas” prize for guitar and has produced several cd’s of his music. FRANCISCO OROZCO “Yiyi” (Percussion, Singer), of an Andalusia family, born in Barcelona, was introduced to Flamenco rhythms at the tender age of four. Yiyi was trained by flamenco singer and father-- “Joselón de Jerez” in his Spanish peña named “Peña Fosforito”. Considered a “child prodigy” of percussion Yiyi began his professional career at the age of twelve. By age seventeen, and one CD later, he became more involved with singing, and left Spain for Germany on a long-term contract with the company “Flamenco Rubio”. Since that time he has performed with “Compañia Flamenca Alhama” throughout Europe and Japan; with María Benitez “Teatro Flamenco” and Domingo Ortega as well as at “Casa Patas” in Madrid; with Jose Greco II; and with world-renowned guitarist Serranito. He has also performed with Alejandro Granados, Yolanda Heredia, El Toleo, El Pelao, María Serrano, La Tania and Antonio Granjero. MATIAS LOPEZ EXPOSITO (Singer) born in Barcelona, Matias is a multi-faceted musician who began his artistic career at the age of 12. As a teen he committed himself to becoming one of the most sought after singers. He has worked with many exceptional dance artists such as Rocio Molina, Rafaela Carrasco, Alfonso Losa, La Talegona, Pedro Cordoba, Manuel Liñan, Marcos Flores, Domingo Ortega, El Junco and Inmaculada Ortega, among many others. Matias currently lives in Seville and travels throughout the country and Europe.

ABOUT THE SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Mission: to enrich the community by providing creative, innovative and diverse performing arts and life-long learning experiences, as well as a professionally managed facility for community and regional organizations. Vision: to be a performing arts center that delivers outstanding and diverse performance events and services to the students, district, community and greater South Shore area. Did you Know? The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Council is the nonprofit board that supports the SMPAC through fundraising efforts and programming decisions. The Council aims to create a diverse base of financial support for the SMPAC. These funds help support the overall operating budget, artists’ fees and production costs of the annual Performing Arts Series. Ticket sales alone account for only 46% of overall operating expenses for the season. Even if we sold-out every show, we still would not be able to cover 100% of our costs - as is the case with most performing arts venues. There are three key aspects of the annual revenue that the Council supports: Annual Campaign, Sponsorships/Grants and the annual Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser. Additional support like this is critical to our ongoing success and future growth as it allows us to help bring in world-class events like Cirque Le Masque, amazing artists like Alpin Hong and once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunities for our students. SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFOR MING ARTS CENTER POLICIES At the request of the artists, the taking of photographs or the use of recording devices during the performance is strictly prohibited. All sales for the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Series are final. Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center reserves the right to substitute comparable attractions or to change the dates of programs when compelled to do so by circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be made in such cases. Performances are subject to change without notice. If you are unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center would be appreciated to enable resale. This is particularly appreciated for sold out events, when waiting patrons could fill vacant seats. Your contribution will be acknowledged for tax deduction purposes. Latecomer Policy: Performances start promptly at the time stated on your ticket. If you arrive late and the performance has already begun, SMPAC ushers will seat you where it will be least disruptive to the audience and performers. You may take your reserved seats after intermission if there is one. Services for patrons with disabilities: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you are purchasing tickets if special arrangements are required. Handicap Accessible seating is available. The theatre allows for nine seats to be removed for persons remaining in their wheelchairs, as well as eight seats with arm rest removed for those transferring from a wheelchair or walker to a theatre seat. Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed in the theatre. Assisted Listening Devices are available for patrons who are Hard of Hearing. Largeprint programs are available upon request. Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are also available upon request and where applicable. At least two weeks notice is required to provide these services. Cell phones/electronic devices: Out of respect for the artists and fellow audience members, please turn off all electronic devices before the performances. These devices cause interference with our wireless microphones. If you need to use these devices, please exit the theatre before doing so. Bad weather policy: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds. Florentine Opera Studio: America’s Songbook Friday, March 23, 2012 7:30 pm Musical highlights of American opera’s brief yet colorful evolution are presented in this delightful showcase. It includes everything from the stirrings of American opera in the 1930s with Virgil Thomson and George Gershwin to expanded works of Gian Carlo Menotti, Douglas Moore, Carlisle Floyd and Leonard Bernstein all the way to the more recent music of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Mark Adamo and William Bolcom. The evening’s emcee will be William Florescu, the general director of The Florentine Opera Company. PEOPLE’S CHOICE Ruthie Foster Friday, May 11, 2012 7:30 pm Through her albums and gigs that have taken her from choir lofts to folk bistros and onto stage in Europe and Australia, Foster has raised the multiple flags of American music. There’s Southern blues in her groove, rock in her rhythm, a blend of gospel redemption, country poetry and jazz elegance in her singing. “It didn’t matter to me what genre it was,” she remembers. “I just took it all in as great music – music that moved me.”
