BIOGR APHY In some ways, Rough & Tough, John Hammond’s new Chesky Records release, harkens back to that first recording Hammond did with Vanguard Records nearly 50 years ago. But over time, Hammond has become a force of nature onto himself, closer in spirit to the icons he emulated as a young man. His guitar playing has become stronger, his expression deepened by the years. Since its release, Rough & Tough has wasted no time and reached #13 on the Billboard Blues charts.

“This recording is not unlike a live show that I would do except that there was no live audience to perform for,” says Hammond. “It’s been a while since I’ve had a solo album out, so I’m very happy with it.”

With a career that spans over three decades, John Hammond is one of a handful of white blues musicians who was on the scene at the beginning of the first blues renaissance of the mid-’60s. That revival, brought on by renewed interest in folk music around the U.S., brought about career boosts for many of the great classic blues players, including Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, and Skip James.

Some critics have described Hammond as a white Robert Johnson, and Hammond does justice to classic blues by combining powerful guitar and harmonica playing with expressive vocals and a dignified stage presence. Within the first decade of his career as a performer, Hammond began crafting a niche for himself that is completely his own: the solo guitar man, harmonica slung in a rack around his neck, reinterpreting classic blues songs from the 1930s, ‘40s, and ‘50s. Yet, as several of his mid-’90s recordings for the Pointblank label demonstrate, he’s also a capable bandleader who plays wonderful electric guitar. This guitar-playing and ensemble work can be heard on Found True Love and Got Love If You Want It, both for the Pointblank/Virgin label.

Born November 13, 1942, in New York City, the son of the famous Columbia Records talent scout John Hammond, Sr., what most people don’t know is that Hammond didn’t grow up with his father. His parents split when he was young, and he would see his father several times a year. He first began playing guitar while attending a private high school, and he was particularly fascinated with slide guitar technique. He saw his idol, Jimmy Reed, perform at New York’s Apollo Theater, and he’s never been the same since.

After attending Antioch College in Ohio on a scholarship for a year, he left to pursue a career as a blues musician. By 1962, with the folk revival starting to heat up, Hammond had attracted a following in the coffeehouse circuit, performing in the tradition of the classic country blues singers he loved so much. By the time he was just 20 years old, he had been interviewed for the New York Times before one of his East Coast festival performances, and he was a certified national act.

When Hammond was living in the Village in 1966, a young Jimi Hendrix came through town, looking for work. Hammond offered to put a band together for the guitarist, and got the group work at the Cafe Au Go Go. By that point, the coffeehouses were falling out of favor, and instead the bars and electric guitars were coming in with folk-rock. Hendrix was approached there by Chas Chandler, who took him to England to record. Hammond recalls telling the young Hendrix to take Chandler up on his offer. “The next time I saw him, about a year later, he was a big star in Europe,” Hammond recalled in a 1990 interview. In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, Hammond continued his work with electric blues ensembles, recording with people like Band guitarist Robbie Robertson (and other members of the Band when they were still known as Levon Helm & the Hawks), Duane Allman, Dr. John, harmonica wiz Charlie Musselwhite, Michael Bloomfield, and David Bromberg.

As with Dr. John and other blues musicians who’ve recorded more than two dozen albums, there are many great recordings that provide a good introduction to the man’s body of work. His self-titled debut for the Vanguard label has now been reissued on compact disc by the company’s new owners, The Welk Music Group, and other good recordings to check out (on vinyl and/or compact disc) include I Can Tell (recorded with Bill Wyman from the Rolling Stones), Southern Fried (1968), Source Point (1970, Columbia), and his most recent string of early- and mid-’90s albums for Pointblank/Virgin Records, Got Love If You Want It, Trouble No More (both produced by J.J. Cale), and Found True Love.

He didn’t know it when he was 20, and he may not realize it now, but Hammond deserves special commendation for keeping many of the classic blues songs alive. When fans see Hammond perform them, as Dr. John has observed many times with his music and the music of others, the fans often want to go back further, and find out who did the original versions of the songs Hammond now plays.

Although he’s a multi-dimensional artist, one thing Hammond has never professed to be is a songwriter. In the early years of his career, it was more important to him that he bring the art form to a wider audience by performing classic -- in some cases forgotten -- songs. Now, more than 30 years later, Hammond continues to do this, touring all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe from his base in northern New Jersey.

He continued to release albums into the new millennium with three discs on the Back Porch label, including Ready for Love in 2002, produced by David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, In Your Arms Again in 2005, and Push Comes to Shove in 2007. Whether it’s with a band or by himself, Hammond can do it all. Seeing him perform live, one still gets the sense that some of the best is still to come from this energetic bluesman.

2009-2010 marked the 6th Anniversary of our existence and the 5th Anniversary of our Performing Arts Series.

Audiences have tripled in size to an average of 600 per performance in the past 5 years.

Our annual season has grown from 4 shows in 2005-2006 to 11 shows in 2010 2011. Six performances have been completely sold-out.

The SMPAC has some of the finest natural acoustics in Wisconsin and is one of the favorite halls in which the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra likes to perform.

The SMPAC is one of the favorite theatres for artists to perform in due to our exceptional hospitality and wonderful audiences. All artists who have performed here have requested to return.

The SMPAC has hosted artists such as Arlo Guthrie, John McGivern, Missoula Children’s Theatre, The Jonas Brothers, Guy & Ralna and Slim Goodbody. We have had artists from across the country and from China, Poland and Austria.

The SMPAC is a rental home for several dance studios, choral groups (including Cantare Chorale), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Wisconsin Jr. Miss and many more regional and national artists and organizations.

Often artists that perform here provide master classes, clinics, performances and workshops for the students in South Milwaukee. When possible, the students have the opportunity to perform with the artists, such as the Dallas Brass and Alpin Hong, on stage during the public performance.

The average cost of one artist/show in our season is $10,000.

Besides artist fees, the SMPAC covers the cost of advertising, hotel rooms, meals, transportation and equipment rental for our artists. We occasionally need to hire additional technical staff for productions. When all expenses are added up, the average cost of a show is $15,000.

On average—ticket sales cover 90% of the cost of a performance; 40% of our entire budget is covered by ticket sales; rental revenues account for 10% of our entire budget.

SMPAC is a nonprofit organization. A Board of Directors oversee the organization of the SMPAC—assisting in planning performing arts series, educational outreach, publicity and the on-going operation of the Center.

Donations and bequests from patrons like you and fundraising events are vital to our existence and providing quality arts entertainment. All donations are tax deductible.

Volunteers are always welcome and needed to help the SMPAC office and to assist patrons at performances. Currently there are 85 Smart Corp members.

John Gurda: The Making of Milwaukee Saturday, February 19, 2011 7:30 pm Milwaukee-born writer and historian John Gurda has been studying his hometown since 1972. He is the author of 19 books, including histories of Milwaukeearea neighborhoods, industries and places of worship. The Making of Milwaukee is Gurda’s most ambitious effort. With 450 pages and more than 500 illustrations, it is the first full-length history of the community published since 1948.

Milwaukee was known as “good land” to Native Americans, a place of abundant natural resources. It became, over the decades, a major Great Lakes port, a stronghold of industry, a capital of ethnic diversity, a model of good government and one of the most livable large cities in America. The Making of Milwaukee is a fast-paced PowerPoint program that captures the full sweep of the community’s history, from its wilderness past to the complex patterns of the 21st century.

Tickets: $5 STUDENTS’ CHOICE: Chapter 6 Friday, April 1, 2011 7:30 pm Chapter 6 is a professional a cappella ensemble from Illinois. Their family-friendly show features a light-hearted, high-energy blend of pop/jazz harmonies that is sure to put a smile on your face. Engaging performances feature a diverse repertoire of American popular music, from Gershwin to Stevie Wonder, as well as original songs. In addition, clever medleys including “The Wizard of Oz” entertain music lovers of all ages. Whether for an audience of 3 or 30,000, these young men stand ready to sing for anyone who’s ready to smile.

The 2009-2010 Season saw the creation of a Student Advisory Committee consisting of students from South Milwaukee High School. Their goal is to find an artist that appeals to their peers, as well as to the SMPAC’s established patron base. The students learn about presenting as they work with us to market the event to their peers and the greater community, volunteer the day of the event and assist with the hospitality for the artist.

Tickets: $25/adult; $20/senior (60+); $10/student; $6/free & reduced Alpin Hong: Classical Alpin Thursday, May 5, 2011 7:30 pm Back by popular demand, Alpin Hong will join us for two evenings of performances. His combination of stunning technique, emotional range and rare humor continues to bring audiences young and old to their feet. The New York Times lauded his “crystalline energy… clear and persuasive ideas… and remarkable breadth of coloration” and called him “a pianistic firebrand” in a review of his standing-room only New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

On Thursday, May 5, Classical Alpin will feature South Milwaukee High School music students and share with you the power of Stravinsky and the clarity of Bach.

Tickets: $25/adult; $20/senior (60+); $10/student; $6/free & reduced Alpin Hong: Unplugged Friday, May 6, 2011 7:30 pm For a lighter evening, join Alpin for his Unplugged performance on Friday, May 6. In this performance he will share with you the delicacy of Debussy and the exuberance of Gershwin.

Alpin will choose selections from jazz and pop standards to other non-classical favorites.

Rooted in extensive classical training and a background in skateboarding, snowboarding, martial arts and video games, Alpin is a creative force unmatched in his youthful vivacity and boundless energy. His astonishing ability to connect to people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds distinguishes him and shapes his evolving performance style.

All sales for the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Series are final. Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center reserves the right to substitute comparable attractions or to change the dates of programs when compelled to do so by circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be made in such cases. Performances are subject to change without notice.

If you are unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center would be appreciated to enable resale. This is particularly appreciated for sold out events, when waiting patrons could fill vacant seats.

Latecomer Policy: Performances start promptly at the time stated on your ticket. If you arrive late and the performance has already begun, SMPAC ushers will seat you toward the back of the theatre where it will be least disruptive to the audience and performers. You may take your reserved seats after intermission if there is one.

Services for patrons with disabilities: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you are purchasing tickets if special arrangements are required.

Handicap Accessible seating is available. The theatre allows for nine seats to be removed for persons remaining in their wheelchairs, as well as eight seats with arm rest removed for those transferring from a wheelchair or walker to a theatre seat. Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed in the theatre.

Assisted Listening Devices are available for patrons who are Hard of Hearing. Largeprint programs are available upon request. Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are also available upon request and where applicable. At least two weeks notice is required to provide these services. Cell phones and electronic paging devices: Out of respect for the artists and fellow audience members, please turn off your cell phone and/or electronic paging device before the performance. Electronic devices cause interference with our wireless microphones. If you need to use these devices, please exit the theatre before doing so.

Bad weather policy: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the grounds of the School District of South Milwaukee.

Box Office hours are 10-4 pm, Monday-Friday, and one hour prior to performances.
