PROGR AM Thank you for choosing to spend your afternoon with dancers from the Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II. This group of young artists, ages 18-23, comes from all over the United States and Australia, Brazil, China, France, Japan and The Philippines. They spend the year living in Milwaukee, polishing their craft and trying on the lifestyle of a professional dancer. In this show you will see the range of their versatility as young artists in original pieces by people they work closely with all season – Director of Milwaukee Ballet II Rolando Yanes, Company Dancer Petr Zahradnícek, Company Ballet Mistress Nadia Thompson, and guest teacher Victor Alexander Ramirez. We have also chosen two classical pieces showcasing ballet’s rich and romantic history, Grand Pas Classique and Pas de Quatre. In their work onstage and throughout the community, Milwaukee Ballet II dancers consistently show people that ballet is alive and well, and it is accessible to newcomers and balletomanes alike. (A fifth ballerina, Fanny Elssler declined to participate, perhaps shedding a bit more light on the hesitancy to share the spotlight – an attitude that can be seen in the reproduction of the work itself!) history Milwaukee Ballet II, established in 1978, nurtures and develops dancers’ technical skills and artistry required for a professional career in dance. The Nancy Einhorn Milwaukee Ballet II curriculum is based on the artistic vision of Milwaukee Ballet and gives dancers the training needed to bridge the gap between student and professional through performing opportunities with the Milwaukee Ballet Company, as well as performances created specifically for Milwaukee Ballet II. These dancers are a vital part of the Department of Education’s mission to reach and educate the community. Their participation in outreach programs through teaching and performing fully enhances their education. Milwaukee Ballet II is meant to offer young dancers a way to become well-rounded citizens, not merely well-trained dancers. With the myriad of opportunities to perform, educate and continue training, dancers learn about many aspects of the professional dance world. The emphasis on personal growth and education is vitally important to the program. Milwaukee Ballet II dancers work with the Director of Education to create and participate in educational workshops for schools and community organizations and with other arts organizations such as the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum and the Milwaukee Public Libraries. Nearly all of the education programs utilize Milwaukee Ballet II dancers so that people see first hand the dancers in action as they learn about the art form of ballet. With the help of Milwaukee Ballet II dancers, the education department has expanded its reach into the community to nearly 30,000 people each year.

Rolando Yanes Director of Milwaukee Ballet School & Milwaukee Ballet II is a native of Villa Clara, Cuba. He received training at the Professional School of the Arts and the Vocational School of Ballet in Santa Clara, Cuba. While in Cuba, Mr. Yanes was a principal dancer with Joven Guardias Centro ProDanza under the direction of Lauren Alonso and Ballet de Camaguey. In 1995, he was awarded the Silver Medal at the prestigious International Ballet Competition in Brasilia, Brazil. Mr. Yanes came to the United States in 1996 as a principal dancer with Milwaukee Ballet Company. As a principal dancer with Milwaukee Ballet, Mr. Yanes expanded his diverse classical and contemporary repertoire dancing leading roles in such ballets as Romeo & Juliet, Swan Lake, Coppelia, The Nutcracker and Giselle. His powerful technique and unparalleled partnering skills led to principal roles in La Esmeralda, Spartacus, Troy Game, Who Cares?, Diana and Acteon and Le Corsaire, as well as major
works from leading choreographers like George Balanchine, Choo-San Goh, Robert Joffrey and Kathryn Posin, among others. Mr. Yanes is in great demand as a guest artist. He has performed with numerous companies including performances of La Fille Mal Gardee with Ballet Taller de San Juan (Puerto Rico) and The International Ballet Festivals in Havana, Cuba and Maracaibo, Venezuela. Mr. Yanes has also performed with the Rockford Ballet, Pamiro Opera (Green Bay), the Florentine Opera and on international tours to Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Jamaica. This marks Mr. Yanes’ eleventh year as the Director of Milwaukee Ballet II, the official pre-professional program of Milwaukee Ballet. Since 2004, Mr. Yanes has also been directing Milwaukee Ballet School and Academy. His original choreography has been performed by Milwaukee Ballet School students and Milwaukee Ballet II. He has been a judge in international and national ballet competitions including the American Youth Competition, DATE Competition in Sendai, Japan and the Japan Grand Prix.

ABOUT THE SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Mission: to enrich the community by providing creative, innovative and diverse performing arts and life-long learning experiences, as well as a professionally managed facility for community and regional organizations. Vision: to be a performing arts center that delivers outstanding and diverse performance events and services to the students, district, community and greater South Shore area. Did you Know? The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Council is the nonprofit board that supports the SMPAC through fundraising efforts and programming decisions. The Council aims to create a diverse base of financial support for the SMPAC. These funds help support the overall operating budget, artists’ fees and production costs of the annual Performing Arts Series. Ticket sales alone account for only 46% of overall operating expenses for the season. Even if we sold-out every show, we still would not be able to cover 100% of our costs - as is the case with most performing arts venues. There are three key aspects of the annual revenue that the Council supports: Annual Campaign, Sponsorships/Grants and the annual Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser. Additional support like this is critical to our ongoing success and future growth as it allows us to help bring in world-class events like Cirque Le Masque, amazing artists like Alpin Hong and once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunities for our students. SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFOR MING ARTS CENTER POLICIES At the request of the artists, the taking of photographs or the use of recording devices during the performance is strictly prohibited. All sales for the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Series are final. Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center reserves the right to substitute comparable attractions or to change the dates of programs when compelled to do so by circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be made in such cases. Performances are subject to change without notice. If you are unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center would be appreciated to enable resale. This is particularly appreciated for sold out events, when waiting patrons could fill vacant seats. Your contribution will be acknowledged for tax deduction purposes. Latecomer Policy: Performances start promptly at the time stated on your ticket. If you arrive late and the performance has already begun, SMPAC ushers will seat you where it will be least disruptive to the audience and performers. You may take your reserved seats after intermission if there is one. Services for patrons with disabilities: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you are purchasing tickets if special arrangements are required. Handicap Accessible seating is available. The theatre allows for nine seats to be removed for persons remaining in their wheelchairs, as well as eight seats with arm rest removed for those transferring from a wheelchair or walker to a theatre seat. Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed in the theatre. Assisted Listening Devices are available for patrons who are Hard of Hearing. Largeprint programs are available upon request. Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are also available upon request and where applicable. At least two weeks notice is required to provide these services. Cell phones/electronic devices: Out of respect for the artists and fellow audience members, please turn off all electronic devices before the performances. These devices cause interference with our wireless microphones. If you need to use these devices, please exit the theatre before doing so. Widely considered the best young performance poet in the country, he is equally comfortable in funny, political or personal work. Florentine Opera Studio: America’s Songbook Friday, March 23, 2012 7:30 pm Musical highlights of American opera’s brief yet colorful evolution are presented in this delightful showcase. It includes everything from the stirrings of American opera in the 1930s with Virgil Thomson and George Gershwin to expanded works of Gian Carlo Menotti, Douglas Moore, Carlisle Floyd and Leonard Bernstein all the way to the more recent music of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Mark Adamo and William Bolcom. The evening’s emcee will be William Florescu, the general director of The Florentine Opera Company. STUDENTS’ CHOICE The Improvised Shakespeare Company Friday, April 27, 2012 7:30 pm Based on one audience suggestion The Improvised Shakespeare Company creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the players has brushed up on his “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, swordplay, rhyming couplets and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. PEOPLE’S CHOICE Ruthie Foster Friday, May 11, 2012 7:30 pm Through her albums and gigs that have taken her from choir lofts to folk bistros and onto stage in Europe and Australia, Foster has raised the multiple flags of American music. There’s Southern blues in her groove, rock in her rhythm, a blend of gospel redemption, country poetry and jazz elegance in her singing. “It didn’t matter to me what genre it was,” she remembers. “I just took it all in as great music – music that moved me.” 12 South Milwaukee PAC
