HISTORY For 50 years Preservation Hall Jazz Band (PHJB) has been traveling the globe, bringing the joy of traditional New Orleans Jazz to music fans around the world. Whether performing at prestigious centers like Symphony Hall in Boston, contemporary music festivals like Austin City Limits, or private engagements for Presidents and Kings, Preservation Hall Jazz Band of New Orleans never fails to bring their audiences dancing into the aisles.

Founded in 1961 by newlyweds Allan and Sandra Jaffe, it has been the ongoing mission of Preservation Hall to nurture and promote traditional New Orleans Jazz as a relevant and vital indigenous American musical format. Boasting contemporaries and bandmates of such early jazz pioneers as Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bunk Johnson, early incarnations of Preservation Hall Jazz Band made familiar names of living legends like brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Billie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett, and legendary clarinet virtuoso George Lewis. Today’s lineup is no less impressive. Under the guidance of Creative Director Ben Jaffe (youngest son to founders Allan and Sandra), led by Mark Braud (nephew of former PHJB leaders Wendell and John Brunious) and featuring such amazing players as fourthgeneration New Orleans musician Charlie Gabriel on clarinet, the latest incarnation of this American Legacy carries forward its founding mission with a practiced ease.

With the release of their latest CD, New Orleans Preservation, Vol. 1, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has insured that traditional New Orleans Jazz will continue to play a vital role in the American musical landscape. Recent collaborations have seen PHJB recording and performing with the likes of legendary bluegrass artist Del McCoury, gospel superstars the Blind Boys of Alabama and famed lead singer for My Morning Jacket, Jim James.

Whether lending their talents to orchestral presentations or providing the score for productions like the avant-garde dance company the Trey McIntyre Project, PHJB has proven time and again that the strains of traditional New Orleans Jazz can provide an instantly recognizable and crowd-pleasing tableau to any performance setting.

BIOGR APHIES Ben Jaffe (Creative Director/Tuba) – As son of co-founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe, Ben has lived his whole life with the rhythm of the French Quarter pulsing through his veins. Raised in the company of New Orleans’ greatest musicians, Ben returned from his collegiate education at Oberlin College in Ohio to play with the group and assume his father’s duties as Director of Preservation Hall. Today he serves as Creative Director for both PHJB and the Hall itself, where he has spearheaded such programs as the New Orleans Musicians Hurricane Relief Fund.

Mark Braud (Trumpet/Vocals) – As nephew to two former PHJB leaders, Wendell and John Brunious, Jr., Mark is proud to further his family’s musical legacy in the company of so many historic players. Beginning his career playing with the Olympia Kids, a young players’ offshoot of the famous Olympia Brass Band, Mark has gone on to record, tour and play with New Orleans legends of both traditional jazz and R&B, including Eddie Bo, Henry Butler, Harry Connick Jr. and Dr. Michael White.

Charlie Gabriel (Clarinet/Vocals) – The musical heritage of Charlie Gabriel can be traced back as far as the 1850s.

Great-grandson of New Orleans bass player Narcesse Gabriel, grandson of New Orleans cornet player Martin Joseph and son of New Orleans drummer and clarinetist Martin Manuel Gabriel, Charlie is truly a living legend. At 76 years old, the extensive list of musicians with whom he’s played includes wellknown PHJB alumni Kid Howard, Kid Sheik, Jim Robinson and George Lewis.

Joe Lastie, Jr. (Drums) – Born and raised in the Lower Ninth Ward, Joe comes from a long line of family members equally dedicated to music and the church. Having played his first job with a rhythm section backing the Desire Community Choir, he would go on to study jazz with Willie Metcalf at the Dryer Street YMCA with classmates Wynton and Branford Marsalis. After a brief move with his family to Queens, NY, Joe returned to New Orleans where he was invited to substitute on drums at Preservation Hall in 1989. He’s been a regular with the band ever since.

Rickie Monie (Piano) – Born and raised in New Orleans’ Ninth Ward to jazz loving church musicians, Rickie was inundated at an early age with the recordings of such great jazz and gospel pianists as Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson. After majoring in woodwind instruments at Dillard University, Rickie turned back to the piano and picked up work in every style of music. In 1982, Rickie got his first call from Preservation Hall to substitute for the legendary resident pianist Sweet Emma Barret after she suffered a stroke.

To the delight of audiences around the world, he’s stayed onboard ever since.

Clint Maedgen (Saxophone/Vocals) – Though Clint is best known as leader of multimedia alt.cabaret group The New Orleans Bingo! Show, he has been in love with the sound of traditional New Orleans Jazz since he was a small child. After studying with clarinet innovator Alvin Baptiste at Southern University in Lafayette, Clint returned to New Orleans’ French Quarter where he cemented his reputation as an artist and collaborator through an ongoing series of eclectic and experimental musical ensembles. As a full-time member of PHJB, he brings an infectious passion to both his playing and singing.

Freddie Lonzo (Trombone) – Born and raised in New Orleans’ Uptown neighborhoods, Freddie was exposed to the music of the streets at a very young age. Having cemented his desire to play New Orleans Jazz, these early Second Line parades would later offer him his first professional gig with EG Gabon and Doc Paulin’s Band. A true master of every style of New Orleans music, from marching brass to modern jazz, Freddie’s first appearances with Preservation Hall date back to the mid-‘80s when he toured and played with Percy Humphrey and Kid Sheik.

ABOUT THE SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFORMING ARTS CENTER Mission: to enrich the community by providing creative, innovative and diverse performing arts and life-long learning experiences, as well as a professionally managed facility for community and regional organizations.

Vision: to be a performing arts center that delivers outstanding and diverse performance events and services to the students, district, community and greater South Shore area.

Did you Know?

The South Milwaukee Performing Arts Council is the nonprofit board that supports the SMPAC through fundraising efforts and programming decisions. The Council aims to create a diverse base of financial support for the SMPAC. These funds help support the overall operating budget, artists’ fees and production costs of the annual Performing Arts Series.

Ticket sales alone account for only 46% of overall operating expenses for the season. Even if we sold-out every show, we still would not be able to cover 100% of our costs - as is the case with most performing arts venues.

There are three key aspects of the annual revenue that the Council supports: Annual Campaign, Sponsorships/Grants and the annual Mystery Dinner Theatre Fundraiser.

Additional support like this is critical to our ongoing success and future growth as it allows us to help bring in world-class events like Cirque Le Masque, amazing artists like Alpin Hong and once-in-a-lifetime educational opportunities for our students.

SOUTH MILWAUKEE PERFOR MING ARTS CENTER POLICIES At the request of the artists, the taking of photographs or the use of recording devices during the performance is strictly prohibited.

All sales for the South Milwaukee Performing Arts Series are final. Refunds will be given only when an event is cancelled and not rescheduled. South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center reserves the right to substitute comparable attractions or to change the dates of programs when compelled to do so by circumstances beyond our control. No refunds will be made in such cases. Performances are subject to change without notice.

If you are unable to attend a performance, the donation of your ticket(s) to South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center would be appreciated to enable resale. This is particularly appreciated for sold out events, when waiting patrons could fill vacant seats. Your contribution will be acknowledged for tax deduction purposes.

Latecomer Policy: Performances start promptly at the time stated on your ticket. If you arrive late and the performance has already begun, SMPAC ushers will seat you where it will be least disruptive to the audience and performers. You may take your reserved seats after intermission if there is one.

Services for patrons with disabilities: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Please notify the Box Office when you are purchasing tickets if special arrangements are required.

Handicap Accessible seating is available. The theatre allows for nine seats to be removed for persons remaining in their wheelchairs, as well as eight seats with arm rest removed for those transferring from a wheelchair or walker to a theatre seat.

Seeing Eye Dogs are allowed in the theatre.

Assisted Listening Devices are available for patrons who are Hard of Hearing. Largeprint programs are available upon request. Audio Description and American Sign Language Interpreted performances are also available upon request and where applicable. At least two weeks notice is required to provide these services. If you have questions please call 414-766-5049.

Cell phones/electronic devices: Out of respect for the artists and fellow audience members, please turn off all electronic devices before the performances. These devices cause interference with our wireless microphones. If you need to use these devices, please exit the theatre before doing so.

Bad weather policy: South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center does not cancel or reschedule performances due to inclement weather, nor can we offer refunds.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the grounds of the School District of South Milwaukee.

Box Office hours are 10-4 pm, Monday-Friday, and one hour prior to performances.

George Watsky Monday, October 17, 2011 7:30 pm George Watsky is a young artist with an uncommon resume. Widely considered the best young performance poet in the country, he is equally comfortable in funny, political or personal work. Watsky was the Brave New Voices International Poetry Slam Champion, is a veteran of HBO Def Poetry Jam and recipient of Robert Redford’s Sundance Summit award for his poetry on climate change. He has shared the stage with Mos Def, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and even Bill Clinton.

Florentine Opera Studio: America’s Songbook Friday, March 23, 2012 7:30 pm Musical highlights of American opera’s brief yet colorful evolution are presented in this delightful showcase. It includes everything from the stirrings of American opera in the 1930s with Virgil Thomson and George Gershwin to expanded works of Gian Carlo Menotti, Douglas Moore, Carlisle Floyd and Leonard Bernstein all the way to the more recent music of Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Mark Adamo and William Bolcom. The evening’s emcee will be William Florescu, the general director of The Florentine Opera Company.

2011-2012 PERFOR MING ARTS SERIES (cont) STUDENTS’ CHOICE The Improvised Shakespeare Company Friday, April 27, 2012 7:30 pm Based on one audience suggestion The Improvised Shakespeare Company creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the players has brushed up on his “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sword-play, rhyming couplets and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard.

PEOPLE’S CHOICE Ruthie Foster Friday, May 11, 2012 7:30 pm Through her albums and gigs that have taken her from choir lofts to folk bistros and onto stage in Europe and Australia, Foster has raised the multiple flags of American music. There’s Southern blues in her groove, rock in her rhythm, a blend of gospel redemption, country poetry and jazz elegance in her singing. “It didn’t matter to me what genre it was,” she remembers. “I just took it all in as great music – music that moved me.”
