D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E Based on the 1952 film starring Gene Kelly, Donald O’Connor, and Debbie Reynolds, Singin’ in the Rain faithfully captures each unforgettable scene that we loved in the movie, including song and tap-dance favorites like, Fit as a Fiddle, Moses Supposes, Make Em’ Laugh, and Good Morning! This smartly written script by Betty Comden and Adolph Green hearkens back to Hollywood’s silent film days and creatively parodies the transition to “talking pictures”. Producing this musical gave our creative team many growth opportunities as we worked to invent our own direction for the story. An exciting hurdle we had to overcome in preparing this project was shooting and editing three separate films for large screen projection during the presentation of the musical itself. Singin’ in the Rain is about film-making history and in order to tell this story well we had to find a way to properly articulate the silent film genre and the spark that catapulted Hollywood into “talking pictures”. God heard our prayers and sent Backflip! Backflip of Madison generously and enthusiastically guided us through the entire film-making process. We are deeply grateful to Ryan Freng, Jeff Bell, and Luke Kolarsky for adding so much to this production of Singin’ in the Rain through their creative work on The Royal Rascal, The Dueling Cavalier, and The Dancing Cavalier. Singin’ in the Rain has so much to offer audiences: incredible music, lively tap numbers, and worthy themes. The best part of this story is its focus on the value of the human person. In scene 1, main character, Don Lockwood, reminisces about his parents’ advice to him as he embarked on a Hollywood career, “Remember dignity…. always dignity.” And, what great advice it is! These words instruct us to not only value the dignity of others but to value our own dignity, as well. They force us to confront the ugliness of pride and to acknowledge the beauty in generosity. They caution us not to take ourselves too seriously and insist that laughter really is the best medicine. They allow us to see change as an opportunity. And, they remind us that there is no greater prize than the gift of true love! Come on with the rain! Angela A. Hineline Director

We are deeply grateful to you for the expertise you shared as we worked to create sound cue magic. And, to my husband, Dan Hineline… You Were Meant for Me. (Act, 1, scene 9…. it’s our song.) As you sit in the theater tonight and watch this show that you’ve supported for so many weeks and months…listen to those lyrics…they are for you tonight. Thank you for the daily reminders to trust in God’s Providence. You were right every time. I love you with all my heart. Singin’ in the Rain

Joshua Vaughn (assistant vocal director) graduated with a B.M. in Piano Performance at the University of South Alabama and an M.M. in Instrumental Conducting at Georgia Southern University. Mr. Vaughn began studying piano at age 6 and has since developed an intense passion for music. He has been given the opportunity to work as an accompanist for instrumentalists and vocalists and has even served as a vocal coach. In addition to accompanying, Mr. Vaughn has worked for two professional companies, Mobile Symphony Orchestra and Mobile Opera Company and two semi-professional groups, Mobile Youth Symphony Orchestra and Playhouse in the Park, as a stage manager. He was also involved in the opera productions during his post secondary education and has experience in the production areas of music. He has also served in leadership roles as a musician in church ministries for years, both in choral and instrumental activities. Mr. Vaughn believes it is crucial for young people to be involved in music and relate it to their journey in the faith, as music shapes the mind, body and soul. Mr. Vaughn is excited to be a part of the SAA Production of Singin’ in the Rain family and has enjoyed helping students journey through the power of music.

FILM CREW BIOGR APHIES JEFF BELL (Short Films Director/Editor) From a young age, Jeff was fascinated by Hollywood and its’ early days, quickly becoming a fan of Charlie Chaplin, Abbott & Costello, and Martin & Lewis. This love of comedy and storytelling only led to the desire of making his own short films with his best friend in their parent’s garage. Now, much older and with access to more than an old VHS camcorder, Jeff has been writing, directing, acting, and editing in numerous award-winning shorts, some of which have been shown internationally. His passion and attention to the tiniest details the average person wouldn’t see, made working on this project an absolute dream. RYAN FRENG (Producer) Ryan has always been a performer. Creating plays, magic shows, and comedy routines was how he spent his childhood. He also devoured all the movies he could get his hands on from the local Blockbuster (and gas-station VHS rentals). When his fourth-grade friend got his first camera, the love of all these things came together. He made his first film: a
stop-motion action adventure with Power Rangers. The rest, as they say, is history. Ryan founded Backflip in 2007 with John Shoemaker. Since then he’s helped build a company that’s won dozens of awards, supported many charities, produced a documentary about Mary, and helped numerous organizations tell their stories in a unique way. And you’ll still find him getting up in front of crowds to give talks and entertain. LUKE KOLARSKY (Director of Photography) Luke is the Jack of all Trades at Backflip and was the Director of Photography on these shorts. His first introduction to filmmaking were the stop motion Lego shorts he made as a kid which led to his love of being behind the camera. Luke has been with Backflip for about 4 years. In that time he has done a little bit of everything from cold calls to shooting a Backflip April Fools video to a kitchen remodel. Outside of work Luke is also a landlord (Ok, technically still work...) which keeps him busy in addition to the odd painting job on the side. When he’s not working he likes to sit down to a good movie or TV show, read, help out on various short films and in the winter you can find him on the ski hill.

E X P E R I E N C E T H E A M B R O S E A DVA N TAG E ! A classical education infused with a Catholic formation makes the greatest difference for students, families, and society by giving young people the foundation to be joyful, smart, responsible, and ambitious citizens and missionary leaders for life. A classical education provides students essential tools of learning: training them to think critically, reason to truths, and express these truths with clarity and joy. They read, examine, discuss, and imitate the best thinkers throughout history – ancient and modern. They become lifelong selflearners, developing the natural virtues and abilities to discern and apply valid solutions to pressing human needs. This time-tested method not only prepares students to thrive in life, but also to fashion a society committed to right reason and the common good. A warm and intentional Catholic formation forges young men and women to live as Christ – adopting a supernatural vision for our lives and cooperating as an instrument of divine love and redemption that alone can fill and heal our restless hearts. The combination of these learnings in reason and faith give our graduates the best foundation for a happy life by becoming a ‘self-gift’ of wisdom and compassion for all. Come see this striking advantage for yourself by scheduling your personal tour soon. Young children are always welcome, too! St. Ambrose Academy is an independent, accredited Catholic school serving grades 6-12. Our mission is to assist parents in the formation of their children by providing a classical education rooted in the Catholic faith. Committed to expanding our educational options and community awareness, we expect to enjoy growing enrollment easily over the next half decade, while maintaining small class sizes up to 20 students to provide highlyindividualized attention and training. Every student matters. Every student enriches our learning environment! A challenging and supportive academic and religious formation is so imperative today; it should be accessible to all families who seek it. Thanks to enduring and growing benefaction, we can offer generous scholarship and tuition assistance to those who need these supports, which is typically one half of our student body each year. Therefore, the generous financial support of our benefactors is vital to our continuance as a top-performing educator in Wisconsin, while imparting a sincere and lively faith. If you can help advance our school mission to new heights with your time, talent or treasure, please contact: Joseph Draves josephd@ambroseacademy.org (920) 284-4771 Together, we will help revitalize our community in the true, good, and beautiful.
