S T E E P T H E AT R E C O M PA N Y Steep Theatre Company was founded in 2000 by artists with little more than a desire to work in an open, ensemble atmosphere and a shoestring budget. Over the years, the company has become a dedicated, close-knit group of twenty-two actors, directors, designers, and writers driven by a shared commitment to the organization’s mission: To bring out the everyday truths in the stories we tell through ensemble work and to reach out to non-traditional theater goers by seeking out stories and creating experiences relevant to them. As a company, we believe theater should stoke conversations about the issues and conditions that are a part of all of our lives; conversations that take place amongst and between our artists and audiences in the theater, in the lobby, or long after everyone has headed home. But Steep’s goal is more than just creating these conversations. Our goal is to add more voices to these conversations. We strive to reach the everyday person that may have abandoned theater as a relevant art form by telling stories that touch their lives in real and palpable ways and by creating an environment that is welcoming to everyone. By bringing these voices back to the theater, we hope to reinvigorate our conversations and ensure that theater is a viable, vital, and productive art form. Over the past 10 years Steep has produced over 30 shows that have enjoyed remarkable critical and commercial success. We find works that showcase and broaden our ensemble’s talents and our ensemble style. D I R E C TO R S N O T E S This play is set in Denmark. And like that other, albeit more famous play set in Denmark, this play also contains a ghost and a man who is haunted, not just by the ghost, but by his past. A past that, try as he might, there is no escape from. One’s past makes you who you are and one must come to terms with that truth in order to make headway in life. You can’t erase your past, or your heritage, so the only possibility is to accept it, confront it, and move through it. We’ve spent a great deal of time in these rehearsals talking about how something as appalling as the incident in the play could occur, and how a family could hide this incredibly terrible secret for so long. So much of what drives us as humans is our desire to, above all else, survive. And we will do what we need to in order to make it through to another morning. While we hear of the physical feats – the hiker sawing off his arm to escape being trapped by a rock, we hear less of the mental feats – what someone ignores, or looks past, or blocks to make their daily life survivable. And yet those mental feats, those lies we tell ourselves, are both far more frequent, and ultimately, more damaging. This play looks at a moment where, after a lifetime of hiding, someone makes that choice to live in the light. Another young Dane struggled with a similar question. 4 Steep Theatre Co.
To be, or not to be, that is the question: Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them? To die, to sleep, No more; and by a sleep to say we end The heart-ache, and the thousand natural shocks That flesh is heir to, — ‘tis a consummation Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream: ay, there’s the rub; For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause: there’s the respect That makes calamity of so long life.
