FROM THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD Welcome Back to SummerStage of Delafield! We missed you in 2020 and are so very happy to be back here at our idyllic stage nestled in the heart of the Lapham Peak Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest for our 15th season of Great Performances in the Great Outdoors. Without the generosity of so many, SummerStage might have closed our “curtains” permanently in 2020, so on behalf of all who make this magical place a labor of love, let me express profound gratitude for you-- our patrons, volunteers, donors, and partners. We never underestimate the value of any support whether it is a donation, an afternoon, a purchase, a thumbs up, a grant, a share, or a laugh. We thrive on what you give back to us. This summer, we may have an abbreviated season with just two mainstage productions, but never fear that our passion for SummerStage has been diminished. More than ever, we understand the importance of being able to gather together, enjoy the company of others, experience live entertainment, and appreciate the talents of others. We look forward with optimism that we’ll be back to full strength next season, but in the meantime we relish the opportunity this summer to have the lights back on. So without further ado, please sit back, set the virtual world aside, soak in the fireflies & starry skies, and enjoy the show! Leah Teske President, Board of Directors
FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome back! It is so wonderful to once again be out at our lovely stage nestled into the Kettle Moraine State Forest. For many months, it did not seem like this day would ever come back. But here we are, back on stage for our 15th season of bringing you high quality performances under the stars. We’re so thrilled to welcome you back that we made “Welcome Back!” the theme of our somewhat abbreviated season. Our plays this summer were each chosen to help you forget about the world for a couple of hours to revel in the beauty of nature and fine theater. Going a little further, both THE NERD and CRIMES OF THE HEART deal with characters being welcomed back into others’ lives. There’s certainly a lot of that going around in real life as pandemic restrictions loosen! It is hard to believe that we have not staged a play since RUMORS closed in September 2019. We’ve been working nonstop to get our grounds, buildings, and stage ready to host you again. We are so incredibly grateful to everyone who played a part in keeping us alive while shows weren’t happening. Without you, this place that means so much to so many of us would potentially no longer exist. And so, thank you. Thank you for sticking with us during such difficult times. Thank you for coming back out to support theatre in Lake Country. We hope that you are able to sit back, relax, feast on your picnic and snacks, and enjoy the show! We couldn’t do it without you. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Crimes of the Heart is a beautifully written show by Beth Henley. The play premiered in 1979 at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. The show opened on Broadway in 1981. It won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated in 1982 for the Tony Award for the Best Play. Life is complicated. I often hear that life was less complicated “back then” in 1974 when the play takes place, but I believe some experiences and the emotions that surround them, are just as complex today. Throughout the play, we watch as the Magrath sisters deal with the pain from the loss of someone close, the excitement of seeing a loved one after being apart from them for too long, the complexity of family dynamics and the crimes of their heart. Part of the beauty of the play is just how differently they all cope. Yes, life can be complicated, but it is also beautiful. The past couple of years have challenged many of us in ways we never expected. Being isolated for so long can really take its toll. I cannot begin to explain just how therapeutic getting back to directing theatre has been for me personally and I couldn’t be happier that it started with this amazing show, cast, and production staff. I hope that you can sit back, relax, put aside the stress from the day and enjoy the show. Kelly Goeller Director
