D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S The Drowsy Chaperone has been called “a wedding gift that keeps on giving” - believe it or not, the first permutation of the show was created for entertainment at a bachelor party instead of perhaps more traditional and less classy scenarios. Toronto “Second City” comedic performers Bob Martin and Janet Van De Graaff (yes they do indeed exist) asked their songwriter and composer friend Lisa Lambert to be a “best man” at their wedding. After happily accepting her honored post, Lisa enlisted book writer Don McKellar and composer Greg Morrison and a team of colleagues to create and perform a very short original musical titled The Drowsy Chaperone. After the bachelor party, future groom Bob Martin joked: “What a wonderful show. I have some notes.” Those notes would be the backbone and inspiration for the dialogue “Man in Chair” would have with his future audience! The Man in the Chair, who we have lovingly referred to as “MIC,” would be the embodiment and soul of the show - the voice in the minds and hearts of musical theatre lovers across the decades. The Drowsy Chaperone continued its metamorphosis, eventually drawing smiles on the faces of New York producers Roy Miller and Kevin McCollum. In 2005, The Drowsy Chaperone traveled to Los Angeles to begin work on the production that would make it all the way to Broadway. Five years and five Tony Awards later, The Drowsy Chaperone has had major productions in Toronto, Los Angeles, New York, London, Australia and Japan, as well as two North American tours. And, at Sunset! The process we have taken toward production of The Drowsy Chaperone has succeeded because it has been one of much discovery, respect and laughter. We have taken a very “ensemble” attitude toward the show, for which I am extremely grateful. After all, growing up at Sunset has taught me that there truly is no better way. As Alan Furlan always reminded us, the translation and meaning of “amateur” is to be respected, as it means “a lover of.” The opportunity to work with such a generous body of professionals and volunteers is an extremely humbling gift. It is what the show and the Sunset Playhouse itself embraces. And what a wonderful journey! Because all involved in this type of production have a special place in their hearts for musical theatre, the contributions of cast, crew and technicians have proven extremely valuable to us. As we galvanized ideas, bits and gags together, we realize that this show is truly a celebration of the art form. Thank you so much for coming to the Sunset tonight. Our home is a magnificent secret. But please don’t keep it that way; spread the good word! Now, as our Man in Chair says, “Tonight we invite you to disappear with us into the decadent world of The Drowsy Chaperone!” Tommy Lueck, Director SONG LIST Act One: “Fancy Dress” “Cold Feets” “Wedding Bells #1” “Show Off” “As We Stumble Along” “Aldolpho” “Accident Waiting to Happen” “Toledo Surprise” “Act One Finale”

U P C O M I N G S H OW S ARSENIC AND OLD LACE By Joseph Kesselring Sept 1-18, 2011 This mad-cap comedy is a sure fire classic! Mortimer Brewster has a thing about marriage. That’s why his decision to get hitched is such a big deal. When he visits his two eccentric aunts in their lively rooming house, he discovers a walk down the aisle might not be the only bit of family business he needs to consider. His loony aunts have taken up a new hobby that seems to include helping lonely roomers find the way to their graves. Raising a toast is in the cards for the Brewster clan, but it’s best to pass on a nice glass of elderberry wine! DYNAMIC DUOS A Musical Mainstage Production Sept 12-13, 2011 Sonny without Cher? Simons sans Garfunkel? Everly or Righteous minus a brother? Unimaginable. So we’ll raise a glass (make it two) to the music world’s most talented teamspairs of performers like Steve & Edie, Karen & Richard, Ike & Tina…Oh, and bring a friend! PRELUDE TO A KISS By Craig Lucas October 13-30, 2011 Rita and Peter meet and fall hard for each other and decide that they want nothing more than to spend the rest of their lives together. Their wedding is a special day when their friends and family join to celebrate this perfect union. When a mysterious old man pops up and asks to give the bride a celebratory kiss, a cosmic change occurs that switches Rita’s soul with the old visitor’s. This modern romantic fairy tale is a tender and funny story about the true nature of love and how hearts beat fast when love is strong.
