A NOTE FROM FRED ALLEY Door County has been home to the American Folklore Theatre (AFT) for over twenty years and has been host to many original works by Wisconsin playwrights. Fred Alley was one of the original founders of AFT, as well as one of the creators of GUYS ON ICE and many other musicals. When GUYS ON ICE debuted at AFT, Fred Alley wrote this introduction for the program: “You’ve seen them. Little wooden shanties sitting on lake ice. Puffs of smoke rising from chimney pipes. On a quiet day, maybe the static of a tinny radio filters through plywood walls, across the frozen tundra, back to shore. In a cold world, on a cold day, on a frozen lake, these little signs of life are all most people know of a secret culture that thrives right here amongst us. Well, wonder no more. Once again, AFT sets its sights close to home as we bring you our somewhat twisted take on the secret world of ice fisherman. GUYS ON ICE spends a day in the life of Marvin and Lloyd - fishing buddies and home grown philosophers. With musical numbers like The Wishing Hole, Ode to a Snowmobile Suit, Fish is the Miracle Food and The One That Got Away, GUYS ON ICE works not only as a serious anthropological study but as a musical comedy as well.” 2 Sunset Playhouse

BIOGR APHIES Inge Adams (Props Mistress) Another opening, another show, a worthwhile job to do and fun to be had with some old friends and some new - who could ask for more? Inge was recently awarded a lifetime membership after being part of the Sunset “family” for the last seventeen years. She hopes you feel welcome here and will continue to join us regularly in this new year. Erin Brophy (Stage Manager) Erin is following up her first stage management experience with Sunset with IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE by stage managing GUYS ON ICE. Even though this is only Erin’s second show at Sunset, she is not new to the world of theatre. Erin is in the process of completing her BFA in Theater Studies, and hopes to graduate from Carroll University in 2011. J. Michael Desper (Technical Director) J. Michael Desper has designed over 70 productions for Sunset Playhouse since the summer of 2001. Previously he freelanced in Chicago for such companies as Circle Theatre of Forest Park, Pendulum Theatre, and Bowen Park Theatre and Opera. Before that, he earned his Master’s degree at San Diego State University and worked for the Tony Award-winning La Jolla Playhouse. Originally from Oklahoma, Michael earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. In spring 2008, he briefly returned to educational theatre with a stint as Guest Artist and Instructor for North Dakota State University. He would like to extend an invitation to anyone 4 Sunset Playhouse

interested in the technical aspects of theatre (and since you have read this far, there must be some interest) to give us a call at (262) 782-4431, ext. 235. We’re already working on the next show, so come be a part of what you see. Tim Gensler (Marvin) This is Tim’s first appearance on the Sunset stage since SEASON’S GREETINGS in the 2006-07 season. One day after being cast in the role of Marvin, Tim was pleasantly surprised when long-time friend Scott Kopischke (Lloyd) called to say,“I understand we are doing a show together!” Tim and Scott have not performed in the same show since 1983, so this experience has been a great ride. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF THE ARTS! No civilized society in the history of the world has survived without the arts. At all levels, from elementary school to the professions, the arts are a nurturing influence to all who participate or witness the magic that comes from the heart, hands, minds, and voices. Enjoy the show! James Kaplan (Music Director) James is the cocreator of GUYS ON ICE, along with LUMBERJACKS IN LOVE, THE BACHELORS, LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS, and SEE JANE VOTE, all of which began at American Folklore Theatre in Door County. Several of these have been performed at the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, in addition to GOODNIGHT IRENE, OLD FRIENDS, and THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY--A FRED ALLEY REVIEW. He has been blessed with very talented collaborators--Laurie Flanigan, Jacinda Duffin and Mr. Alley. He must thank Sarah, Kay and Molly, without whom he could not be here tonight.

B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) Scott Kopischke (Lloyd) Scott is excited to be back on the Sunset stage, especially with his friend Tim. Previous Playhouse roles include Arnold in THE BOYS NEXT DOOR and Elwood in HARVEY. Scott is also a playwright, and is honored to have had three of his plays produced here at Sunset. He dedicates this performance to his wife, Joanne. Ellen Kozak (Costume Designer) Ellen is glad to be returning to Sunset to work on GUYS ON ICE. Her design work has taken her from Adam and Eve to speculative visions of the future for many theatre companies across the nation, including the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, GeVa Theatre in Rochester New York, The Intiman in Seattle and Center Stage in Baltimore. Designing for films, videos, conventions, industrials, mascots, and photography sessions, Ellen’s challenges have included shows on cruise ships and in other countries. You can see more of her work in the upcoming Pioneers of Television programs on PBS. Variety is the spice of life, and theatre is certainly full of variety. Bryce Lord (Director) Bryce is happy to return to the Sunset Playhouse once again where he has directed INSPECTING CAROL, SOCIAL SECURITY, SYLVIA, and DAMN YANKEES. He has also appeared on our stage as Rev. Shaw Moore in FOOTLOOSE, as well as several Musical Mainstage performances. Other

directing credits include work for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Boulevard Ensemble, Pius XI High School, Shorewood Players, and Falls Patio Players. As an actor, Bryce has appeared on stage professionally on numerous occasions with First Stage Children’s Theater, Skylight Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Shakespeare and others. Marty Wallner (Lighting Designer) In 36 years, this is Marty’s first show on ice. His prior ice experience is limited to the cooling of drinks. Among his favorite recent Sunset lighting designs are ESCANABA IN DA MOONLIGHT; I LOVE YOU, YOU’RE PERFECT, NOW CHANGE; and A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. Why would anyone want to sit on a frozen lake when they could be in a warm theatre enjoying a play? Matt Zembrowski (Ernie da Moocher) Matt is as excited as a buck in October to be performing in one of his all-time favorite shows, don’tcha know. He last appeared on the Sunset stage in the Musical Mainstage production, Time Capsule: the 1940s. Additional Sunset credits include THOSE CRAZY LADIES IN THE HOUSE ON THE CORNER, DAMN YANKEES, and WEST SIDE STORY. Recently, Matt made his Off-The-Wall Theatre debut playing Nicely Nicely Johnson (and the piano) in its December production of GUYS AND DOLLS. Matt has performed all over the greater Milwaukee area, but always loves coming back to the Playhouse. Thanks to Bryce, Jimmy, and da Guys, and love to the Zembrowski family and to Aunt Kathy and Uncle Rod.

U P C O M I N G S H OW S CAPS FOR SALE, a bug in a rug production Adapted from the classic tale by Esphyr Slobodkina, our story goes behind the scenes to weave the tale of a cap peddler’s life, some monkeys, and their monkey business with a lesson in perseverance. January 27-29, 2011 BEST OF BROADWAY, a Musical Mainstage production Most great Broadway shows feature what’s come to be known as “the eleven o’clock number”. It’s that one big, killer tune that continues to echo in the ears of departing audiences. The number that leaves ‘em humming. The signature song that defines a career. Think “Rose’s Turn” in GYPSY. “I Am What I Am” from LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” from GUYS AND DOLLS. BEST OF BROADWAY will pay tribute to The Showstopper--musical theatre’s biggest, brightest, most memorable show tunes. And they’ll be brought to you by some of the city’s busiest professionals, musical theatre veterans David Flores, Robert Bortman, Amy Bouterse, and Samantha Sostarich. Plus, you won’t want to miss Allie Babich-the only young performer to appear as a Musical Mainstage Rising Star four times-because she’s just that good. January 31- February 1, 2011 THE RHODE SISTERS: A Feisty Folk Trio Slightly Raucous, Slightly Relevant, and Slightly Related Alissa Rhode (piano), Molly Rhode (string bass) and Rhonda Rae Busch (guitar) LOVE to sing! This all-girl band delivers a hootenanny of folk favorites and original songs, plus a special Valentine’s tribute to love unrequited and otherwise. Don’t miss the sisters’ tight harmony singing and healthy sibling rivalry! Your sweetie will thank you. February 14, 2011 IT HAD TO BE YOU, a SideNotes Cabaret An evening of songs presented by the incomparable Adam Estes and friends to get your toes tapping, your fingers snapping, and your heart soaring.
