D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S In a December of 1946 New York Times review of the film, It’s a Wonderful Life, Bosley Crowther wrote that the movie’s weakness was in its sentimentality and the illusion it creates of real life. “Mr. Capra’s nice people are charming,” wrote Crowther, “his small town is a quite beguiling place and his pattern for solving problems is most optimistic and facile. But somehow they all resemble theatrical attitudes rather than average realities.” Well, then how appropriate that we should be staging the theatrical version of this movie that in 1990 was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant” by the United Sates Library of Congress. (Take that, Mr. Crowther!) Of course I’m being flippant regarding that 1946 review, and I even understand why other similar criticisms of the Frank Capra classic exist. But who among us hasn’t needed to be reminded of the effect we have on those around us and the world beyond? We sometimes examine where we are and find it not to be living up to the youthful dreams of where we thought we’d be. We can mistakenly judge our lives and our very selves a failure for not achieving those dreams, forgetting the importance of what we have done and who we’ve helped along the way. In the spirit of this story, I asked the cast to start each rehearsal with someone sharing a personal “Wonderful Life” moment, to tell the rest of us something about their lives that reminds them how valuable they are and how good life really is. There were many. May you be reminded of how much you mean to so many people and the good effects you have had on the world around you. Merry Christmas! Mark Salentine

BIOGR APHIES Jennifer Allen (Stage Manager) Jennifer Allen loves Christmas and is thrilled to work on this project with old friends and new faces. Jennifer admits to having a pretty wonderful life and is currently planning a wedding to a pretty wonderful guy, Chris, whom she can’t wait to wed next July. As President of the Board of Directors, Jennifer encourages everyone to see what a wonderful life they have and rally behind the “George Baileys” in their life and community. J.W. Anderson (Mr. Gower) J.W. vividly recalls seeing IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE on the Channel 6 late, late show almost fifty years ago. He thinks it was the first time he ever shed a tear (just a little one!) watching a film. When he heard they were doing the show here, he just hoped he could get a part in it. This is his third show at Sunset. Thanks, Mark! Randall Anderson (George Bailey) A founding member of Wisconsin Hybrid Theatre, Randall is delighted to return to Sunset. Audiences may remember him from RUMORS, AUNTIE MAME, and A FEW GOOD MEN. Randall is thrilled to work once more with all the talented artists at Sunset, and urges everyone to be mindful of the lives we unknowingly touch. Ruth Arnell (Mary Hatch/Bailey) Ruth just couldn’t pass up a chance to act with Randall Anderson and is particularly delighted to work with him in

such a fun Christmas classic! Previous roles include Meg Magrath in CRIMES OF THE HEART, Tracy Lord in THE PHILADELPHIA STORY, Brooke Ashton in NOISES OFF, and The Girl in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH. In spring 2008, he briefly returned to educational theatre with a stint as Guest Artist and Instructor for North Dakota State University. We’re already working on the next show, so come be a part of what you see. Jim Donaldson (Mr. Carter) Jim Donaldson is quite pleased to again be working with Mark Salentine and the Sunset Playhouse. He is thankful to be working with such a fun, energetic cast as this one, and hopes his future experiences with Sunset will be just as exciting. Isabelle Hughes (Janie Bailey) Isabelle is 11 years old and attends St. Robert’s School. She is so excited to be playing the part of Janie. This is her first experience with Sunset Playhouse, and she loves it! Theatre is a huge part of Isabelle’s life. Her acting experience includes several shows at the Children’s Theatre of Wauwatosa including SLEEPING BEAUTY and KING MIDAS AND THE GOLDEN TOUCH. She has also performed at Temkin-Children’s Playhouse in COMPOSE YOURSELF, I NEVER SAW ANOTHER BUTTERFLY, and ALICE IN WONDERLAND JR.

Scott Jaeger (Mr. Welch) Scott has most recently appeared at the Sunset as the King in THE UNDERPANTS. His previous credits include…. ah… nothing. Seriously, he had such a great time in THE UNDERPANTS that he just had to have another swing at the ball. He gives thanks to Mark and the rest of the cast for making him feel so welcome. Karen Kegel (Co-Props Mistress) This time of year it’s tradition to sit down and watch It’s a Wonderful Life on TV, so it’s a pleasure to see it come to the stage at the Sunset Playhouse again. Karen has been involved with props work for various shows, and thinks it’s always fun to meet new actors and see returning faces. A big thanks to Beth and Mark for helping me out. Merry Christmas to one and all. Stuart Kendall (Mr. Potter) Stuart made his first stage appearance at Sunset in the comedy MARY, MARY in 1965. He has appeared in several mystery thrillers at Sunset including ANGEL STREET, DIAL ‘M’ FOR MURDER, SLEUTH, and DEATHTRAP. What About Luv?

January 13 – February 6, 2011

U P C O M I N G S H OW S JINGLE JIVE, a Musical Mainstage Production Happy Chrisnukwanzekah to all! We’re going to stand tradition on its head and welcome the holidays with a merry little attitude. No Silent Night tonight. Instead, we’ll be rockin’ and groovin’ and laughin’ at the whole holiday hullabaloooooo. Slightly skewed, mostly irreverent, we’ll be more like, “Hark, can Harold Angel sing!” Join us for a little pre-holiday respite from what can be a stressful, crazy-making time of year. December 13- 14, 31, 2010 WHAT ABOUT LUV? Comic zingers and a trio of singers make this witty musical about the perils of modern love a lyrical winner. Old school chums Milt and Harry bump into each other on the Brooklyn Bridge one day. Milt has grown weary of married life while Harry admits times have been so tough that he’s going to jump off the bridge and end it all. When Milt’s wife Ellen shows up, a reversal of fortunes and partners happens with madcap musical results. Jan 13-Feb 6, 2011 CAPS FOR SALE, a bug in a rug production Adapted from the classic tale by Esphyr Slobodkina, our story goes behind the scenes to weave the tale of a cap peddler’s life, some monkeys, and their monkey business with a lesson in perseverance.
