Richard Hynson Invocation............................................................................................Bishop Sedgwick Daniels “Gloria” from Gospel Mass...........................................................................................Robert Ray Porscha Nelson, soprano Bel Canto Chorus Letter from a Birmingham Jail As the Civil Rights Movement strengthened in the fifties and early sixties, Dr. King organized protests and encouraged demonstrators to stand up for equality and fair treatment for all American citizens regardless of color. He helped to found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and he spoke and wrote tirelessly against injustice and inequality. In 1963, against the advice of many, Dr. King went to Birmingham to call for desegregation of department stores there. The demonstrators and he were met by brutal police attacks using dogs, fire hoses, and night sticks to turn back the protesters. Dr. King himself was arrested and put in solitary confinement in jail. Even then, he could not be silenced. Defying his captors, King wrote his famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” on scraps of paper to be smuggled to the outside world. Just three years earlier, in 1960, Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his searingly critical String Quartet No. 8, adapted later for string orchestra as Chamber Symphony No. 110-a by Rudolph Barshai with Shostakovich’s approval. Using tunes that identified his own name and quoting earlier works of his, Shostakovich followed the practice of hiding messages in music, similar to the hidden codes found in African-American spirituals. Shostakovich’s anger and despair at Soviet oppression reflect Dr. King’s resolute defiance of White America’s implacable and unfair segregation of society. Today, with Bishop Daniels’ help, we will offer selections from the “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” in concert with Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony no. 110-a, showing how Dr. King’s fight was part of a global reaction against oppression. Roger Holland, II Porscha Nelson, soprano Bel Canto Chorus Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra PROFILES RICHARD HYNSON, Music Director/Conductor Richard Hynson has served as music director of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra since 2006. Additionally, he has served as music director for Bel Canto Chorus since 1987. In demand as a guest conductor, Hynson’s past engagements include performances with the Milwaukee Symphony, the Skylight Opera Theatre, and the Racine, Sheboygan, and Waukesha Symphony Orchestras. Hynson has conducted at Carnegie Hall in New York City, where he led a large national festival chorus and orchestra in Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Dona nobis pacem. In the summer of 2008, Hynson conducted the string orchestra and chorus for the Prelude Music Academy summer camp in Madison. In 2009, he guest-conducted the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra in one of the Concerts on the Square in Madison. He also served as the Music Director for Gathering on the Green, the popular outdoor music festival in Mequon, WI, in 2009 and 2010. In addition to his work as a conductor and educator, Hynson is
a composer. He has written a substantial body of published choral, vocal, and ensemble works. Music critic Elaine Schmidt praised Hynson’s most recent performance with the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, in their collaborative production of Astor Piazzolla’s Maria de Buenos Aires: “Hynson and the ensemble supported the singers gracefully and created a get-underyour-skin sonic backdrop that did more to set the story in Buenos Aires than detailed scenery could have managed” (Schmidt, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, November 11, 2011). BISHOP SEDGWICK DANIELS, Narrator Bishop Sedgwick Daniels is the Prelate of the Wisconsin First Jurisdiction of The Church Of God in Christ, where he oversees more than 80 churches and missions in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. He founded the Holy Redeemer Institutional Church Of God in Christ in 1986, and has since seen its growth into a religious, educational, and social service

P R O F I L E S ( c o n t .) complex in the heart of Milwaukee. Through the leadership of Bishop Daniels, the ministry of Holy Redeemer has a Community Credit Union and a Health Clinic. The campus also has a youth center, Boys and Girls club, and three schools from K-4 to the 12th grade. Because of the vision Bishop
Daniels has for this community and his love for families, he has also spearheaded the development of a 5 story, 23,000 square feet structure designed to be a co-ed living environment for high school students ages 14-18 who may be in foster care or homeless.
MILWAUKEE CHAMBER ORCHESTRA The Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra is Milwaukee’s only professional chamber orchestra and one of only 65 in the nation. Since its founding in 1973, the MCO has earned a reputation as one of southeastern Wisconsin’s finest professional performing arts groups. Critical review, audience response, and other feedback reveal that the MCO performs with the highest of artistic integrity and fills a unique niche in satisfying a desire for audiences to hear, and for professional artists to perform chamber music within the greater Milwaukee metropolitan area.
