D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S “Language is more to the mind than light is to the eye.” Dr. Samuel Grindley Howe Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, a healthy, normal child. Eighteen months later, she contracted what her doctor termed “acute congestion of the stomach and brain.” Against all odds, Helen survived the illness, but it left her blind and deaf, plunging her into a dark and silent world. Enter a Miracle Worker: Annie Sullivan, a young inexperienced teacher with a darkness of her own. With the death of Annie’s little brother Jimmie, she believed that she had lost the ability to love. It took Annie’s tenacity and resourcefulness to bring a spark to Helen’s world by helping her to connect words and objects, giving her language and a means to communicate. It took Helen to open Annie’s heart to the possibility of love. Helen went on to attend schools on the East Coast and Europe. She counted celebrities like Alexander Graham Bell and Franklin Delano Roosevelt among her personal friends, and she became an internationally known heroine and – amazingly – speaker. Truly, Helen lived her own philosophy: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing.” Helen Keller died in 1968 at the age of 87. Until her own death in 1936, Annie Sullivan remained at Helen’s side. It has been my joyful adventure to work with an exceptional cast and production staff in bringing to life this inspirational story. Thank you for sharing a few of your life-adventure hours with us today. Carol Dolphin Director S P O T L I G H T O N T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S Welcome to the fourth Mainstage show of our 55th season, The Miracle Worker! Since joining the Board of Directors last year, I’ve been able to see firsthand how much the Waukesha Civic Theatre adds to our community. WCT offers even more than the six Mainstage shows per season, a phenomenal Christmas show that has become a tradition to many, and other “Random Acts” and “Comedy Tonights.” The Waukesha Civic Theatre hosts and coordinates programs like the Academy at Civic Theatre (ACT), which is an arts program for ages 4 to adult, as well as the Waukesha State Bank Art Gallery and much, much more. To paraphrase Annie Sullivan, “Now all I have to teach you is one [thing about WCT]…Everything.” Thank you so much for your support of WCT and enjoy the show. I only ask for one thing in return - if you enjoy this show, come again… tell others… bring a friend… help us share the magic and fun that is the Waukesha Civic Theatre. Justin Cobb Board Director 8 Waukesha Civic Theatre

M AD CORNER The amazing story of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller is inspiring, beautiful, funny, and emotional. I am thrilled that WCT is producing this incredible script. I think it is one of the best plays ever written, and in the hands of this awesome production staff, cast, and crew, it is sure to be a moving experience for everyone! I would like to thank everyone that supports WCT! We wouldn’t be here without you. All of our volunteers help us out in any number of ways by acting, ushering, serving on the board of directors, providing maintenance or office support, or working on sets, costumes, and props. Our patrons come to WCT to see quality live entertainment — the fruits of our volunteers’ labor. Our donors help keep us financially sound by their gifts to the Annual Operating Fund, the Endowment Fund, or by including us in their planned giving. The generosity of the Waukesha community astounds me, and I truly appreciate all the time, talent, and money that you give to WCT. One way, and arguably the best way, to support WCT is to spread the word about Waukesha’s best-kept secret. It always amazes me when I meet someone in Waukesha who has no idea what a fantastic organization we have right here in the heart of the community. Tell people about what we do and all that we offer. Enrich. Challenge. Entertain. That says it all, so keep watching, keep participating with, and keep supporting this cultural cornerstone. We couldn’t do it without you.
