L E T T E R F R O M W I N D Y C I T Y A N D C H I C AG O G A Y M E N ’ S C H O R U S Dear Friends, Thank you so much for joining us for our 2012 combined Pride concert, “THE SOUND OF Fabulous!” We have been working hard to bring this special choral event to fruition, and believe you’re in for a truly fabulous evening featuring the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, Aria, and the Windy City Gay Chorus – all on one stage! The music in tonight’s concert has been specially selected not only for you, but also for the GALA Festival that will be held in July in Denver. Every four years, LGBTQA choruses from all over the United States , Canada, and from some countries overseas come together to celebrate our unity and diversity as choruses. This promises to be the largest festival ever with over 5,500 registered singers! The tradition of CGMC and Windy City Performing Arts joining forces to perform together prior to GALA Festivals dates back to 2000, when we presented “Pride on the Pier” at Chicago’s Navy Pier Skyline Stage, prior to GALA Festival, San Jose, California. Organizations like Windy City Performing Arts and the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus can only boast of their continuous existence because of the strong support we receive from our wonderful communities and loyal supporters. There are many ways to become involved in our organizations, and this is the perfect time to invite you to become a part of one – or both – of these amazing groups. Through our respective missions, we strive to remain relevant to our communities. As WCPA’s mission states: Windy City Performing Arts celebrates diversity, honors creativity, and cultivates pride through the transformative power of music and the arts. And as the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus mission states: We Entertain. We Inspire. We Motivate. We Comfort. Both organizations bring so many together in the common cause of presenting beautiful, meaningful music. So whether as a subscriber, a donor, an advertiser, a volunteer, or even as a prospective member, we would love to have you join us. Enjoy the show! Stephen and Patrick

ABOUT WINDY CIT Y PERFOR MING ARTS Windy City Performing Arts (incorporated in 1983) is the independent not-for-profit umbrella organization comprised of Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria. Each chorus performs a variety of musical styles from classical to pop. We pride ourselves on musical excellence regardless of the style of music, and have a history of performing major choral works including specially commissioned pieces. Windy City Gay Chorus Founded in October, 1979, Windy City Gay Chorus is the oldest gay chorus in Illinois and the Midwest, and one of the first gay choruses organized in the country. WCGC is a founding member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA). WCGC’s first performance was in December of 1979, at the Don We Now... holiday concert at Stages Music Hall. Windy City Gay Chorus has performed in cities throughout the country, and has been lauded by the Illinois House of Representatives, the mayors of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago mayors Richard M. Daley and the late Harold Washington. Just completing its 33rd season, WCGC has been a long-standing and well-established beacon in Chicago’s LGBTQA community, and a recognized name in choral arts circles throughout the country. Under the direction of Stephen C Edwards since 2009, the chorus has taken on renewed enthusiasm, and a commitment to performing music that is as challenging at it is entertaining. Aria Aria was formed in 1996 as the small, women’s ensemble of Windy City Performing Arts and Unison: Windy City Lesbian and Gay Singers. Aria quickly became an audience favorite at concerts and special appearances, performing at GALA Festival 2000 in San Jose to rave reviews. In 2006, Aria became a full-fledged chorus – that now includes men and identifies itself as Windy City’s “Treble Chorus”. Under the direction of Stephen C Edwards, Aria embraces its role as a totally inclusive chorus, singing music that not only entertains, but reminds us of our diversity. Embedded in the spirit of every performance and outreach event that our choruses participate in is our Mission Statement: Windy City Performing Arts celebrates diversity, honors creativity, and cultivates pride through the transformative power of music and the arts. A B O U T T H E C H I C AG O G A Y M E N ’ S C H O R U S With more than 150 singing members backed by a small army of volunteers, the CGMC family covers a diverse cross-section of the Chicago metropolitan area. Under the visionary guidance and inspired direction of Artistic Director, Patrick Sinozich, CGMC delivers a distinctive brand of entertainment that keeps our audience coming back again and again. Our members log thousands of hours annually to accomplish an ambitious schedule of performances, fund-raisers and charitable appearances. We Entertain CGMC delivers a unique entertainment experience found nowhere else in the city. We produce professional-quality shows that combine the best elements of musical theater, cabaret and traditional choral performance. But only CGMC can add that special “twist of gaiety” that can make each show fun, moving and memorable. 4 Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus/Windy City Performing Arts

A B O U T T H E C H I C AG O G A Y M E N ’ S C H O R U S ( c o n t .) We Inspire Whether we’re representing the community while singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field or we’re providing rarely-seen GLBT-friendly entertainment in smaller cities downstate, CGMC serves as ambassadors and provides a positive image to countless thousands every year. We Motivate Sometimes the message to take action can be delivered more effectively through song than through speech. That’s why CGMC has been heard regularly in the dome of the state Capitol (supporting GLBT rights and domestic partner benefits) and at major fundraising events throughout the city (often supporting AIDS-related organizations). We Comfort CGMC is not only an integral part of the community, but we are a family. When asked to help, CGMC heeds the call. We’ve sung at at the Auditorium Theater honoring the victims of Sept. 11. We sing at smaller memorial services honoring local community leaders... and sometimes our own members. We’re humbled to realize that CGMC’s presence can bring comfort and healing to those around us. For more information, to join our mailing list or to find out how you can support the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, visit cgmc.org. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

CGMC is supported in part by a City Arts 2 grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.

Amor de mi Alma (Spanish) I was born to love only you; My soul has formed you to its measure; I want you as a garment for my soul. Your very image is written on my soul; Jai Ho (Dance with Me!) (Hindi) Come, come my Life, under the canopy. Come under the blue brocade sky! Iota by iota, I have lost my life. In faith I’ve passed this night dancing on coals; I blew away the sleep that was in my eyes; I counted the stars ‘til my finger burned.

Taste it, and keep it; it’s a heart at its final limit. You’re a dark black, coal-black magic, aren’t you? The Sound of Fabulous 9

CHICAGO GAY MEN’S CHORUS – THE LARRY E. BURKE SCHOLARSHIP FUND In addition to their many talents and their endless enthusiasm, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus members are also required to contribute financially to the success of the organization – through annual dues and miscellaneous costs associated with weekend rehearsal retreats and traveling performances. Fortunately, CGMC members who are not able to meet these financial obligations can earn scholarships through the memorial fund left by Larry Burke, a longtime member and dear friend of the chorus who died in February 2005. Through Larry’s generosity, every CGMC member has the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits and experiences the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus has to offer.
