D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S Songs For a New World is not a traditional musical. Sure, there’s singing, dancing, acting, set pieces, costumes, etc., but this show doesn’t have a concrete plot or structure. Instead, it’s a series of songs that cover a central theme: moments in our lives where we are faced with a choice, a hardship, or an adversity to overcome. A ship captain and his crew pray for a safe journey, a woman grapples with the choice she made to stay in a loveless marriage, a man looks back with regret on his failed relationship, a mother grieves her family torn apart by war. There are no names for the characters; only stories that remind us that while we all might be different on the outside, we share a common experience as humans on this Earth across all barriers of race, gender, religion, and even time. That idea, albeit a simple one, has been proven to us time and time again over the last twelve months. We’ve all experienced many of the same feelings - isolation, uncertainty, injustice, and grief. Within all this struggle, however, we have learned how to build stronger communities, to support one another, and to be resilient in times of strife. Ultimately, that’s the story this musical tells us and the one we have worked to present to you this evening. We hope that you see a piece of your own life reflected in these people and that you leave feeling inspired and hopeful about the future that seems closer and brighter each day. “Listen to the song that I sing, and trust me, we’ll be fine.” -Colleen Jaskulski, Director

Sophia Hardman, Costumes, Marketing Sophie has been involved in 5 players productions in both cast and crew. One of her most memorable experiences was when she was a part of the flight crew for Peter Pan where she helped Wendy fly. She is so happy that she joined theatre because she has met so many nice people, been a part of many traditions, and learned so many things. Grace Hudson-Mairet, Marketing Co-Head, Paint, Sound Grace is delighted to be working on her eighth show at Tosa East. She would like to thank all of the lovely thespians she has worked with throughout the years, her friends and family, and the hundreds of confused employees across the greater Milwaukee area who did not hang up on her. Ever since the tragic death of her (fictional) pet duck, this theatre has been a place of friendship, hard work, and goofiness.
Arthur Johnson, Pit Arthur is a cellist and pianist who enjoys both playing and teaching music. He is involved in the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Lucciola String Quartet, the Tosa East Jazz Band, and works as a private piano teacher. He can usually be found in the music hallway in orchestra or teaching Music Theory as a TA, or of course walking to Starbucks. This is Arthur’s fourth show at East, having previously appeared in Peter Pan, Seussical, and Antigone. Peter Larson, Construction, Deck Peter has enjoyed being a part of the Tosa East Players. He hopes you enjoy the show! Isa Lentz, Costumes Head, Historian, Marketing Isa is excited to be a part of the costumes crew for her seventh production at Tosa East. She has enjoyed

Anna Lowe, Marketing, Pit, Props, Sound Anna can’t believe the time has come for her tenth and final show! She has been in love with this theatre and community ever since she was a little bee in Tarzan in the sixth grade. From playing Wendy in Peter Pan to being a Bird Girl in Seussical, she has enjoyed every role onstage. Anna would like to thank her friends and family for the endless support and love they provided throughout her time with the Players. She is thrilled to be performing violin in the pit for her last show, and hopes you enjoy the show!

Will Martin, Pit Will Martin is thrilled to be a part of this rockin’ show. In past years, he has played percussion for Tosa East’s “Peter Pan” and “Seussical”. Will is especially looking forward to returning to pit after the 2020 production of “Seussical” was cut short. Following graduation, Will hopes to continue making music in and beyond college. Maura Mitchell, Costumes Maura would like to thank Breadsmith and Starbucks for always nourishing her with pumpkin muffins and LOTS of cold brew. Although she stepped down from acting this season she is excited for her last year as a player. Isaac Norman, Fly, Lighting Design, Sound, Student Production Manager Calm, quiet and approachable are words nobody has ever described Isaac with.

But despite the insanity that accompanies each show, he has enjoyed every moment and would not trade it for the world. He would like to thank Drenning for her 4 years of tolerance, as well as everyone else who was forced to listen to the MegaBangers playlist during workdays. He looks forward to finishing off his last show the way he began as a freshman - by getting kicked out of the theatre for not turning in his paperwork. Madelyn Peyton, Stage Manager Four years ago Madelyn was likely known as “that quiet freshman crying stage left”. She’s proud to say her voice is now louder than ever, stating “it’s the character development for me”. Madelyn thanks the haters for sponsoring her first 3 years, without them she’d still be crying stage left, now she cries only under the booth. She also thanks iced chai tea lattes and pumpkin chocolate chip muffins for her daily dose of sanity. Lastly Madelyn gives a big thank you to her theatre family for putting up with her foolery, which she’s not apologetic for in the slightest.
Sophia Phillips, Props Head Sophia has spent the last 4 years of her high school career inhaling foam and thick glue for the sake of artistry, she would appreciate if you donated to her Go FundMe for a dual lung transplant. Samantha Ramirez, Sound Sam has enjoyed being a part of the Tosa East Players. She hopes you enjoy the show! Anna Robbins, Construction CoHead, Deck Head Anna has always loved being part of the Tosa East Players and her heart will always belong with this theater. She hopes everyone can find happiness in something like she has here.

Trevor Schmitt-Ernst, Construction, Sound Trevor is thrilled to be wrapping up his time here with the Tosa East Players. Trevor has had a great time but can’t wait to leave to other things, not necessarily bigger or better. Trevor has had a blast in the cast at Tosa East ranging from Romeo to Ensemble to Creon, but now is ready to try something new with crew. Outside of East, Trevor is a member of First Stage’s Young Company where he most recently played Rev. Parris in the Crucible. Thank you to everyone for a great four years! Maggie Sweeney, Costumes, Hair & Makeup Being a part of the Tosa East Players has been one of Maggie’s biggest highlights in high school. She has never shied away from the chance to perform or do public speaking. She will always be grateful that someone as outstanding as Ms. Jaskulski has given her an opportunity to be part of the community that is theater ... to Exceed Expectations! Shakara Thomas, Cast Shakara is excited to be a part of her fifth and final show with the Wauwatosa East Players. After attending the Player’s production of Hairspray the musical, Shakara quickly fell in love with theatre. She would like to thank her family for their ongoing support and the cast and crew for making her last high school show possible. Love you kid <3

Alyna Williams, Benefit & SPF Head, Cast, Costumes, ITS Head, Marketing, Playbill If there’s one thing that seventh grade Alyna knew it was that she wanted to be a Tosa East Player. Now, as a senior, Alyna can’t believe that her days in the theatre are almost over! It seems like just yesterday that she was in freshman year up in Costumes with Dea as they hand sewed those darn Pippin puppets during their first 10/12. Alyna would like to thank the cast, crew, pit, and production team for all of their hard work every season. Also shoutout to Dem Hats- here’s to many more baking sessions to come! Isabella Wishnie, Costumes, Deck, Fly, Hair & Makeup, Lights Isabella Wishnie is proud to join the Tosa East Players after recently moving to Tosa this year. She grew up watching family members perform in all sorts of productions at East and is excited to be part of the magic. She looks forward to closing off her senior year with a bang!
