FR O M T H E D I R E C TO R O F T H E AT R E P R O D U C T I O N Well, this winter has already hit us with one major blizzard; we can only hope that all the ground hogs and pot-bellied pigs out there are spot on with predictions of an early spring. What better way to spice up a cold night than with an evening of The Rocky Horror Show! University Theatre is happy to be back in the Memorial Union Theater after a long absence. I cannot emphasize how important being here is to our students. To be in a fully-equipped proscenium theatre with a different set of technical challenges and opportunities is vital to the education of our design and technical theatre students. The University Theatre faculty and staff wish to thank Fred and Susan Foster and the Electronic Theatre Controls Arts Presenter’s Fund for the generous grant that made this production possible. Thanks also to The Onion’s AV Club of Madison for the media sponsorship of the show. And finally, thanks to the UW Arts Institute for choosing The Rocky Horror Show as one of the highlighted events during UW’s “Year of the Arts.” We are extremely pleased to welcome Dennis Courtney, our guest Director/ Choreographer. Scott Foss returns as our Musical Director having guided the cast and musicians through last year’s production of Into the Woods. Buzz Kemper joins us as guest sound designer. And of course we recognize the great work, energy and commitment of our students, staff and faculty members who have worked so hard to make this show a reality. Now may you “time warp” to your own favorite part of the universe. Welcome, David Furumoto Director of University Theatre

D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S When I mention to my friends and associates in the theatre that I am going to be directing The Rocky Horror Show, the overwhelming response has been, “I love that show. It is so outrageous!” That is indeed true, but I’d like to address the real challenge and my goal in approaching the show. How do we best balance the inherent outrageousness with strong storytelling? How do we illuminate the show’s theme of unabashed, unapologetic and complete self acceptance without losing the energy, fun, and the excitement that comes when you push the envelope and blur the lines? The press release from the original Rocky Horror describes the piece as “an outrageous assemblage of the most stereotyped sci-fi movies, MARVEL comics, Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello outings and every rock and roll vintage.” We will inherit all this with the script and music and while I imagine a production with great imagination and fabulosity in design and whatever we choose to do for sheer shock value, I keep coming back to finding the best way to tell this story with all its different styles and parody. We must also keep in mind all the different historic and social changes that have occurred since the original 1974 production – the AIDS epidemic and safe sex, new materials in fashion and design, new lighting instruments, the MTV generation, the resurgence of Glam Rock, Grunge Rock, Hip Hop, nostalgia for the 1970s, etc. These must have some place in our production as we continue to proceed with great theatricality, borrowing from RKO movies, cabaret and nightclubs, burlesque, the golden age of Broadway, the fashion industry, drag shows and multimedia. Throughout this process, we must continue to ask ourselves, “What is essential to the storytelling?” When we establish what is most important, we can then unleash all our creative energy and limitlessness into the storytelling, using design elements and approaches that live honestly within what is essential. Dennis Courtney, Director

B MOVIES AND THE ROCK Y HORROR SHOW B movies have long been part of the world of film, but The Rocky Horror Show gives nods to many of the “cult classics” of RKO Pictures and the world of science fiction and fantasy that emerged in the 1940s and 1950s. RKO Pictures produced such classics as King Kong and Citizen Kane, but it was B movies such as Cat People and The Body Snatcher that filled up the bulk of its schedule. RKO was also a pioneer in the film noir genre, originally a B movie staple, which informs this production. Budgets were much less for these films than what was being spent for the “A movies” that RKO and the other major studios were creating at the time. While these B movies were created with a fraction of the budget of major motion pictures, they held a unique appeal for millions of viewers in their time and beyond. Science fiction films, many considered B movies, became highly popular in the 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s the late night double-feature became a staple in underground culture. As Hoberman and Rosenbaum write in Midnight Movies, this tradition developed “a distinctive strain of subterranean moviegoing… after hours and under wraps. Occasionally, some presentation (a magic show, a sex education lecture, or a discussion of the evils of marijuana) would accompany the feature. But most often it was just the low-budget film program… that attracted the denizens of the night.” Hoberman and Rosenbaum also write that Richard O’Brien was a big fan of “bad” sci-fi 4 University Theatre

B M O V I E S A N D T H E R O C K Y H O R R O R S H O W (c o n t. ) and B-movies, as well as the subculture surrounding the cinemas playing midnight movies well after pubs and public transportation had shut down, which added to their “cultish atmosphere” and popularity with “youthful crowds”. O’Brien wrote The Rocky Horror Show as an homage to these late night movies with hopes of drawing “freaks like himself into the theatre” and attempting to create “something any ten year-old could enjoy”. This tradition of B movies comes to the stage with The Rocky Horror Show, and the film version of the play became perhaps the most successful incarnation of the midnight movie phenomenon. The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been a staple at theaters across the country as a midnight movie for over 30 years. The tradition of participation and repeat viewing that has been the realm of fans of the film has become a part of many stage productions of the show as well, drawing film fans to attend live performances. O’Brien’s goal has perhaps been achieved in ways he could never have imagined when the play first premiered. Lindsey Hoel-Neds and Megan McGlone, Dramaturgs

Past theater credits include Jack in University Theater’s Into the Woods (2010), Michael in University Theater’s Revolt of the Beavers (2009), and University Theater’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (2009). Outside of University Theater he is a published poet, aspiring novelist with one completed novel (so far), and a performing member of The Understudies improv troupe. He would like to thank his wonderfully supportive parents, Annie, Abbie and Jesse, his amazing friends and his brothers for their love, and his incredible Understudies team for sharing him with University Theater! Thank you University Theater for giving me the opportunity to perform with such a talented cast! Adam Aufderhaar (Eddie) This is Adam’s eighth production since he landed in Madison in 2008. Past credits with UT include HAIR, The Imaginary Invalid, Into the Woods, and The Yum Yum Room. Other credits include Music Theatre of Madison’s production of The Wild Party, and Four Seasons production of South Pacific. It has been a crazy ride so far, but you ain’t seen nothin’ yet! Adam is a second semester junior double majoring in Theatre and Drama and Communication Arts: Film, TV, and Mass Media. Millions of thanks go out to the cast and crew, especially musical director Scott Foss, for their commitment to making this show so freakin’ awesome! Nick Barsuli (Dr. Scott/Ensemble) is a 3rd year undergraduate excited to be in his 4th University Theatre production here in Madison! He’s hoping to graduate this upcoming year with an Acting Specialist Theatre degree. You might have seen him previously in Love of the Nightingale, First You’re Born, Hair, Schoolhouse Rock Live, and A Wonderful Life. He would like to thank his parents for their loving and undying support, Annie for her constant affection, his cast and crew for all their hard work, and everyone else who has helped him get where he is today! He also would like to give a shout-out to his number one fan—his little sister, Sam. Kyle Featherstone (Ensemble) The legend of Kyle Featherstone is an epic 6 University Theatre

that has captivated audiences for ages. Raised on a farm with seven siblings in northern Nebraska, Kyle discovered an interest at tap dancing at the age of thirteen and a portal to musical theatre.Finding that his soul yearned for a profession in performance, Kyle moved to the Midwest years later to complete his dreams and overcame all odds to star in such classics as Guys and Dolls, Crazy for You, and Singin’ In the Rain. A true icon of the stage, Kyle is known around the Madison campus where he currently attends school as “The Triple Threat,” and is the premier actor, singer, & dancer sought after by many directors across the nation. Aaron Heaps (Ensemble) is extremely excited for his first UniversityTheatre production of The Rocky Horror Show. He is a freshman at UW-Madison and is studying theatre with a certificate in LGBT studies. Aaron attended high school at Craig in Janesville, WI. While there, he was involved in several productions including Zap, Beauty and the Beast, West Side Story, and Thoroughly Modern Millie. He was also a proud member of the Janesville Craig Spotlighters Show Choir. Thanks for coming and enjoy the show! Haley Kosup – Kennedy (Ensemble) is thrilled to be a part of Rocky Horror and call it her first UT show. She is a junior majoring in Theater and Drama. During the past three years Haley has been a dancer on Hypnotiq, UW’s original hiphop crew. She has also devoted time to co-founding Mill Street Guild, a summer concert series in Plymouth, Wisconsin, in which she has been a performer and will be a choreographer. Fun fact: her first starring role was in the 7th grade as the Ugly Duckling in a Kabuki style stage adaptation of the classic story. She would like to thank her Mom for being the best person ever and never asking her to follow a set path in life. xoxo Camille Lesar (Ensemble) is a junior at the University of Wisconsin double majoring in Political Science and Communication Arts. She was previously in the UW production of HAIR. She is excited to be a part of Rocky with such an amazing cast and crew, especially her fellow members of the firey quartet of female fantastic-tude. Hannah Meddaugh (Ensemble) is thrilled to give herself over to absolute pleasure in this production of The Rocky Horror Show. She is currently a freshman pursuing an education in genetics but hopes to stay involved in the arts as much as possible. Favorite past roles include Rosalind in As You Like It, Liesl in The Sound of Music, and Mary Warren in The Crucible. Hannah would like to thank the amazing cast and production team, as well as her family, da boys, Primm, HRD and Jacob for their constant love and support. Jayne Miller (Ensemble) is thrilled to be making her UT debut in The Rocky Horror Show with a cast of incredibly talented Transylvanians. A New Yorker, Jayne has been a lover of Broadway shows and local musical theatre since childhood. A senior majoring in Social Welfare, Jayne is looking forward to graduating in the spring and continuing her work on an up and coming album with Nicki Minaj. Jayne would like to thank her friends and family for their fantastic love and support. Eva Nimmer (Janet) is beyond thrilled to be making her University Theatre debut in The Rocky Horror Show! Originally from Plymouth, Wisconsin, she is a sophomore on the UW campus. She hopes to be involved in many future shows as she pursues a degree in German and/or English and/or Theatre (we’ll see). Eva feels incredibly blessed to be a part of this production and would like to thank several people: thanks to Dennis and Scott for their patience, encouragement and confidence that she could do it, thanks to everyone in this unbelievably talented cast for inspiring her to *cough* ‘come out of her shell” and her stellar friends and family- especially her wonderful parents for their unconditional love and support. Thanks and love to you all. Kaitlin Elizabeth Olsen (Usherette/ Magenta) is proud to make her sixth University Theatre appearance as a recent UW-Madison graduate from the Acting Specialist program. Recent Madison credits include: Young Mary Bailey in A Wonderful Life (CTM), Nellie (u/s) in South Pacific (Four Seasons), Florinda in Into the

Woods (UT), Jo March in Little Women – The Musical (CTM/Four Seasons), Young Woman in Blood Wedding (UT), Joan in Dames at Sea (UT), Sheila in Hair (UT), and Philomele in The Love of the Nightingale. Klaatu barada nikto, my alien babies. Patrick Reed (Narrator) was titillated upon learning he had been delegated the role of “Narrator.” He described working on the show these past few months as “absolutely brilliant”. In his opinion, all involved in the production have enthusiastically embraced the musical’s humor, energy, and message. He would like to thank Dennis and all others involved for bequeathing unto him this first opportunity to participate in a UT production. Patrick’s fascination with theatre was actualized in high school. He says he never would have found the courage to first get involved without the support of his family and Mr. Kerr. He is a junior at UW-Madison where he studies International Studies, History, Theatre, the Didgeridoo, and his thesaurus. He asks all of you to embrace science fiction. Alli Rekow (Columbia) is thrilled to claim this show as her UT debut! She’s a junior from Woodbury, Minnesota, majoring in English and Theatre. Like all good Minnesotans she loves snow, lakes, and the Twins. A huge thank you goes out to the cast and crew for making this experience one that will never be forgotten. Another thanks to mom and dad for their support, even after they heard what her costumes look like. And one more extra special shout out to the roommates who, after 3 years of show tunes constantly being belted around the house, have yet to kick her out. Joshua Sanders (Riff-Raff ) is thrilled to be making his debut with UT as a senior in high school! In 2009, Josh took first place in the High School Men’s Division of NATS, and this year was a semi-finalist in the College Freshman Men’s Division. Past theatre credits include: Godspell (Jesus), Pirates of Penzance (Frederic), Once Upon a Mattress (Jester), Seussical University Theatre 7

This is Chris’s third appearance on the University Theater stage. Previously seen in Into the Woods (Cinderella’s Prince), and Valparaiso (Chorus), he is extremely grateful to the Theater department at UW-Madison, University Theater, Dennis Courtney, and Scott Foss for giving him this amazing opportunity and for helping him to continue his theatrical training and growth as a performer. He would also like to thank Alex and her stage management team, and all of the designers for making this a wonderful experience. Finally, he would like to thank Jim and all of his friends in the costume shop, the guys from Fundamentally Sound, and his friends and family for all of their support through this process. Ryan Williams (Ensemble) started exhibiting minor hand tremors in early January in anticipation for his 7th production with University Theatre and debut on the Union Theater stage. He would like to thank his parents for promising not to send him to a bible camp after this foray into cross-dressing as long as he looks “super cute.” He’d also like to extend thanks to the costume department for helping him clear up some issues he had always wondered about: walking in heels isn’t that hard after a week, and having breasts is just as distracting as he always thought it would be. Recent productions include The Grapes of Wrath (Al Joad), The Zen Substitute (Lord Ukyo), VIN (Joey), and HAIR! (Steve). Future production: What?!? Acting DOESN’T pay well? Damn! (Himself ). Nick Zajdel (Rocky) is thrilled to be in his first show with the University Theatre. He has performed in various shows in the past, including UTA’s Therapy, Badger’s Catholic’s Godspell, West Allis Players’ Beauty and the Beast, and West Allis Players’ All Shook Up. Most 8 University Theatre

recently he was Laurie in Four Seasons Theatre’s production of Little Women. He is currently a junior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison majoring in biochemistry. He thanks his family and friends for all their love and support. He would also like to thank Dennis, Scott, the cast, and everyone else involved with the production for making this such a memorable experience. It is definitely something he will never forget. Artistic/Production Staff Richard O’Brien (playwright) was born on March 25, 1942 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire England, and moved to a farm in New Zealand in 1951. His birth name was Richard Smith, but he changed it to O’Brien (his maternal grandmother’s name) when he started his acting career, as there was already a Richard Smith in the British Actors Equity. O’Brien had a difficult childhood. He had a poor relationship with his mother who he describes as a bigoted, egotistical, horrible emotional bully. He also struggled in school—his teachers often caned him and others teased him for being small and effeminate; O’Brien personally struggled with his gender identity for much of his life. O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show reflects some of these painful elements of his childhood (his mother served as the inspiration for the character of Frank-nFurter) but The Rocky Horror Show was also inspired by his childhood love of comic books, horror movies, and rock music. As a child O’Brien also learned to ride horses on his family farm, which helped him get into show business as a stuntman. In 1970 he acted in the London production of Hair with Tim Curry, after which he was in the London production of Jesus Christ Superstar, directed by Jim Sharman. In 1972 he started writing his rock musical, which had working titles of They Came from Denton High and The Rock Horror Show before finally settling on The Rocky Horror Show (with the 1975 film version titled The Rocky Horror Picture Show). While O’Brien has a sizable resume of other performances, Rocky Horror remains by far the most well known. “In 1973, the production was named “best musical” by the London Evening Standard, and Tim Curry was singled out for his ‘Jagger-like

W H O ’ S W H O ( c o n t .) performance.’ By 1974, the show was “a genuine London phenomenon” that attracted popular culture luminaries including Mick Jagger himself, as well as David Bowie, Lou Reed, and Tennessee Williams.” (Weinstock 4) O’Brien has been married twice (currently single) and has three children; he continues to work as an actor in London. On the legacy of Rocky Horror: “When you do something like Rocky, which is undefinable somehow, it always becomes difficult to lose that. Not that I have any interest in saying goodbye to Rocky. I absolutely adore being involved and a part of something that is really a phenomenon. And I have no problems with that at all. If it overshadows anything else, I can understand completely why and again it doesn’t worry me.”--Richard O’Brien (www.imdb.com/name/nm0639782/bio) Dennis Courtney (Director/ Choreographer) Based in New York City, Mr. Courtney staged a re-envisioned production of Fiddler On The Roof (currently running in Tel Aviv) as the official production for the 60th Anniversary of Israel, for which he won the 2009 Israeli National Theatre Prize, Israel’s “Tony Award”. Based in NYC, he recently directed the off-Broadway premiere of Civil War Voices (6 MITF Awards). He has been the director/choreographer of over 150 stage productions including Peter Pan with Cathy Rigby, Can-Can with Leslie Uggams, the regional premiere of I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, the world premieres of Ethel Waters: His Eye Is On The Sparrow, Red Hot Mama, Beggar’s Holiday, The Beethovens, and numerous original music revues. Favorite musical productions include Little Shop of Horrors, The Last Five Years, Sophisticated Ladies, Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (most recently with American Idol Finalist Melinda Doolittle), The All Night Strut, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Singin’ In The Rain, Beehive, George M!, Music Man, Annie Get Your Gun, Paper Moon, A Funny Thing Happen On The Way To The Forum, It Ain’t Nothin’ But The Blues, The World Goes ‘Round, Hello Dolly, West Side Story, Cinderella, Oliver, Showboat, Guys and Dolls,

Oklahoma, Paint Your Wagon, Lucky Stiff, A Grand Night For Singing, and Cabaret. Mr. Courtney has conceived and staged special events and award shows, working with such performers as Bette Midler, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Warren Beatty, Carol Channing, John Raitt, The Bacon Brothers, and David Letterman. On television, Mr. Courtney directed the 5th season opener of TV’s “Perfect Strangers”. Dennis’ performing career has included Broadway, TV and concerts. He appeared on Broadway/on tour in Starlight Express, Joseph…, Peter Pan with Sandy Duncan, Roza with Georgia Brown, The Fantasticks, Grease with Andrea McArdle and regionally in many other shows. Mr. Courtney is a former champion figure skater and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association, the Screen Actors’ Guild and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. Please visit www.denniscourtney.com Scott Foss (Music Director) Mr. Scott Foss, known throughout the United States as a conductor and clinician of both sacred and secular choral music, has been executive editor for Roger Dean Publishing Company for the past twenty years. Roger Dean is the branch of The Lorenz Corporation that specializes in serious choral repertoire, as well as sophisticated keyboard literature, challenging instrumental solos and ensembles, and music textbooks. Mr. Foss also serves as Director of Music at the First United Methodist Church in Madison where he conducts the Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Handbell Choir and coordinates the activities of a variety of other musical organizations with the church. Beyond the standard expectations of a church music program, Mr. Foss has developed a theatre group at the church which has mounted full fledged productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, Amahl and the Night Visitors, the Leonard Bernstein Mass at the Wisconsin Union Theater, the Duke Ellington Sacred Concert no. 2 and N. 1, Dave Brubeck’s To Hope and a dramatic series during the season of Lent. F R I E N D S O F U N I V E R S I T Y T H E AT R E The FRIENDS of UT is a group of individuals that serves as a support organization for UW Madison’s University Theatre, providing members with opportunities to connect with and offer support for student actors, dramaturgs, directors, and designers involved in University Theatre productions. FRIENDS of UT plan and host receptions prior to productions, enjoy exceptional performances together, and work to encourage broader awareness and appreciation of the UW Department of Theatre and Drama throughout the community. Funds raised by FRIENDS of UT will provide much needed production support, including technical enhancements such as state-of-the-art equipment upgrades, as well as special guest artist residencies that will support the training of our students. In the past, Friends of UT have enjoyed invitations to a special post-performance reception with Olympia Dukakis as well as a pre-performance discussion with show directors. They sponsored a visit with Anthony Rapp (from the original Broadway cast of RENT). Funds raised were used to support a Suzuki acting workshop with Brandeis Professor Eric Hill and several guest sound designers. This fall, the group enjoyed a day trip faculty and students to Ten Chimneys in Genesee Depot, WI. We are proud to share the names of the FRIENDS of UT with you throughout this season.
