Nolen Borne, Clara Forrest, Kelly Layde D R A M AT U R G ’ S N O T E S Turmoil in France, Turmoil in the Theatre The 18th Century theatre in France, as in much of Europe, was a time of tumultuous change. The codified rules of Classicism were beginning to lose their hold on the drama and Shakespeare was beginning to make inroads on the French stage, though only in carefully sanitized and regularized adaptations. Traditions regarding appropriate subject matter for serious drama were breaking down and by the middle of the century even the bourgeoisie was beginning to find a place in derivations from the English play, The London Merchant, by George Lillo. Even the highly distinctive baroque form of musical theatre developed by Lully and Charpentier and continued by Rameau was beginning to face competition from the more free and easy style of Italian opera or the reform operas written in Paris by the German composer, Gluck. This turmoil in the theatre was only one element, of course, in the rumblings of the greater disturbances to come in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille. When Choderlos de Laclos’ novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses made its sensational appearance in 1782 these changes, both artistic and political, were very much in the air. Only two years later Beaumarchais’ Le Marriage de Figaro, with its overt challenge to the aristocracy, was a huge hit. While opinions are divided about how consciously Laclos was criticizing the morality of the upper class, readers could hardly overlook these implications of the novel in the context of such a politically charged time. It is worth noting that the sexual aspects of the book for which the novel later became notorious, while certainly noted, did not lead to its being banned until 1824, well after the Revolution. Art and politics in our day have a lot in common with their state in the 18th Century, and it is not surprising that Les Liaisons Dangereuses has inspired such an array of theatrical and cinematic adaptations in the last twenty years. Sadly, its cutthroat amorality and calculated venom are quite in tune with life in the 20th and 21st Centuries. How long can it be before an adaption comes along which is specifically set in the world of the one percent? Corliss Phillabaum 2

D I R E C TO R N O T E S We study in the theater. We study everything from texts to table manners. The stage is our classroom. But what is the underlying subject of our study? I think it is the puzzle of human beings. To me each play is a maze of human beings, a puzzle ball of sorts, to be unlocked. What unlocks this play for me is passion. It is elusive and compelling, animal and analytical, life affirming and destructive. I am a passionate woman. Women are often relegated to the compassionate gender not the passionate one. Yet women tell of the loss of passion in their lives as similar to the loss of a limb. I ask myself and I ask you, if you met the person who inspired and met your passion, what would you do for them? Or to them? In this play there is a tension between the call of skin on skin and the pleasure of artifice. In this play we question compassion, desire, cruelty and finally love. In spite of their corsets and lace, I feel a beating humanity in each of these creatures. So I hope you see them framed on a proscenium stage as both distant and familiar. As intimates. Your presence is a present. Thank you for being our audience. T H E C O R L I S S P H I L A B AU M T H E AT R E P R I Z E Established by an anonymous donor, the prize provides scholarships to undergraduate students majoring in theatre. The donor named the award in honor of Professor Phillabaum for his role inspiring students with the depth of theatrical traditions while teaching at UWM. Professor Emeritus Phillabaum taught theatre history in UWM’s Department of Theatre from 1964 to 2004. The donor views this award as an opportunity to acknowledge and support the hard work of current students. Aware of the many hours demanded of students in the theatre program, and that many students need outside jobs as well to support their education, the donor wishes to provide a little something extra to help out and encourage a new generation of theatre professionals.
