LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT In spite of the mild winter, we are still yearning for spring, and the Conservatory has a fine roster of events to help spur it along! Save the date for a special evening of Swing, Swing, Swing! Members of our Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, and Jazz faculty have come together to create the Conservatory Big Band and they’ll be performing for a wonderful evening of music and dancing at the Astor Hotel on Juneau Avenue on Friday, June 1 at 8:00pm. Join us for great music from the Big Band era of the 1930s and 40s—we’ll party like it’s 1939! As of this writing, we do not yet know the outcome of the Batterman Ensemble’s trip to New York, February 17-20, to participate in the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition, but whatever the prize, the experience has already been monumental for the six participating students. We asked them to share what this experience has meant to them so far and here are a few comments: “I’m very excited for the trip to New York. I’ve been practicing for hours on end in preparation and can’t wait to compete!” “I have never been to New York City. I am extremely excited to go there and play and work with other talented colleagues as well as watch, listen to, and learn from some of the best jazz musicians in the country.” “The Batterman Foundation and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music have given me endless opportunities to pursue my true love, jazz trumpet. Traveling to New York… is the culmination of four months of hard work and dedication. I have formed lasting relationships with the other musicians in my combo while we worked toward the goal of qualifying and now competing in this national competition.” “Making this competition is one of the best things in my life. It’s a reward for all the hours of practice I put in everyday and the dedication I have to learn this music to the best of my ability.” While only a select few have been enabled to travel to New York, each of our students makes us proud every day as they work toward and accomplish their goals. Enjoy the concert!

The Conservatory of Music would like to thank the following sponsors for making all of these concerts possible. “Music for Every Stage” begins with your generosity....
