LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT What a fantastic time we had in New York City when six of our students participated in the Charles Mingus High School Jazz Competition at Manhattan School of Music! While they didn’t win, they played fabulously and Lenard Simpson, alto saxophone, was selected as an Outstanding Soloist. Lenard was invited to play a tune with the Mingus Big Band later that night at the Jazz Standard, one of NY’s finest jazz clubs! It was an amazing experience for all involved and we thank the Batterman Foundation for their continued support of our jazz programs. We’re working on concerts for next season and are sure you will be happy with the line-up. Wonderful music from our regulars and some special treats as well. We’ll share dates and other info with you just as soon as we can. Be sure to save the date for a special concert featuring a newly created ensemble: the Conservatory Big Band. Under the direction of David Bayles, the Big Band will make its debut at a special event, Friday, June 1 at the Astor Hotel. Come and listen, come and dance—this will be a fun night of terrific toe-tapping tunes. And when the band is not playing we will take the time to honor some of our faculty members who have been teaching here for over 35 years! Join us to salute Peter Baime, Berkeley Fudge, Phillip Grossman, George Lindquist, Raymond Mueller, Lynn Roginske, and Marlee Sabo. Also not to be missed: Vincent Herring, our guest alto saxophonist with the We Six Trio on Thursday, May 3, will host a master class in the Helen Bader Recital Hall on Wednesday, May 2 from 5:00 to 7:00pm. Come to this free event to observe and learn as he works with our Jazz Institute student combos. In addition, Mr. Herring will host a master class for some schools at noon on Thursday. There will be some room for you if you would like to attend, just let us know. And Laurence Juber, the lead guitarist from Wings, will conduct a master class on May 15 entitled “Beatles, Wings and Six-Strings.” Laurence is a fantastic fingerstyle guitarist and this workshop will cover topics specific to that form. This is a not-to-be-missed event! All are welcome to attend and tickets are just $5.00 general admission and free for Conservatory students. Enjoy! Karen Deschere President/CEO The Conservatory of Music would like to thank the following sponsors for making all of these concerts possible. “Music for Every Stage” begins with your generosity....
