Our fall Annual Campaign is revving up! Each year, the generosity of individuals, corporations, foundations and local government agencies allow the Conservatory to present concerts, offer financial aid and scholarships, provide in-school and after-school music programs, music therapy services for individuals with cognitive and/or physical disabilities, and so much more!

Annual Campaign support allows us to serve nearly 20,000 people, age 4 months to senior, in Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. BIOGR APHIES Linda Jones, clarinet WCM faculty member since 1994. B.A. and M.M. Colorado State University in Clarinet Performance. As a post-graduate student, Ms. Jones did summer study with Leon Russianoff and Stanley Hasty, and also studied with Peter Hadcock of the Boston Symphony. In addition to giving individual instruction at the Conservatory, Ms. Jones coaches woodwind chamber ensembles, teaches in schools and senior centers as part of the Conservatory Connections program, and serves on the faculty of WCM summer music camps. A member of the WCM Faculty Woodwind Quintet, she also plays clarinet and bass clarinet in area orchestras and is clarinetist and manager for Milwaukee’s Festival City Symphony.

Rita Mitchell, oboe WCM faculty member beginning spring of 2012. M.M., Chamber Music Performance UW-Milwaukee; M.L.I.S., Master of Library and Information Science, UWMilwaukee; B.M., Music Performance, Northern Illinois University. At Northern Illinois University Ms. Mitchell studied with Judith Zunamon Lewis (Lyric Opera Chicago) and J. Ricardo Castañeda (Chicago Sinfonietta).

At University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, she was a member of the Leonard Sorkin International Institute of Chamber Music and studied with Stephen Colburn, former principal oboist of Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.

Ms. Mitchell was the 2002 winner of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition. Ms. Mitchell is currently principal oboist of the Concord Chamber Orchestra. She is also a member of the Wisconsin Philharmonic.

Previous positions include oboe/English horn with the Racine Symphony. In addition to giving individual instruction at the Conservatory, Ms. Mitchell is an adjunct faculty member teaching oboe, and the Information Literacy Librarian at Cardinal Stritch University.

Andrew Jackson, bassoon WCM faculty member beginning in the fall of 2011. M.M. Performance UW-Milwaukee, B.M. Performance-Florida State University.

Andrew Jackson currently performs with the Sheboygan, Manitowoc and Racine symphonies and has performed with orchestras throughout Wisconsin, Iowa, Florida, and Georgia. In 2007 he performed with the Orquesta Sinfonica UANL in Monterrey, Mexico and later with the Nebraska Theatre Caravan on their Midwest tour. A long time member of the Tallahassee Winds, he joined them on their 2004 tour to Australia. Mr. Jackson studied with Jeffrey Keesecker and Theodore Soluri.

Eric Jacobson, trumpet WCM faculty member since 2008.

Eric Jacobson is a professional trumpet player, clinician, composer and private instructor residing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Eric freelances in the Milwaukee and Chicago area playing in groups such as D’CalleSon, De La Buena, Kings Go Forth, Tristan Royalty Squad, Jeno/Eric Latin Sextet, and leading his own jazz quintet. As of 2011 Eric is now a member of the talented We Six resident jazz sextet. Eric has been fortunate to experience performances and lessons with well-known artists such as Maynard Ferguson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, Jim Rotondi, Tim Hagans,Tito Puente Jr., Eric Benet, and Wynton Marsalis. recently recognized in Jazzscope magazine

by David Hoffman as having “a gorgeous round sound on both the trumpet and flugelhorn” and “on his way to being a jazz giant.” Eric has also taught at MYSO jazz studies, Wauwatosa West High School Jazz Ensemble and assisting the Wauwatosa West Marching Band. In 2001 Eric released his debut jazz CD entitled Inspiration which features some of Milwaukee’s best jazz musicians as well as New York trumpet sensation Brian Lynch. Eric just released his second Album in 2011 called Two A.M. Live at the Jazz Estate. Between 2010 and 2011 Eric toured with Kings Go Forth, traveling in 48 states, 15 countries.

Max Day, trombone WCM faculty member since 2002. MM and BFA from UW-Milwaukee. Mr. Day is an active trombonist, conductor and composer, and currently serves as Director of the Conservatory Connections program. A committed and experienced private instructor, he formerly taught at the Waukesha County Conservatory of Music and served as Music Director for SafeZone Community Art Center, Director of Jazz at Wauwatosa West High School, Associate Conductor for the UWM Youth Wind Ensembles and UWM Bands, Interim Director for Music From Almost Yesterday, Director of the UWM Panther Band, and taught theory and general music for UWM. Jake Tomasicyk, trombone WCM faculty member beginning in the fall of 2011. BM in Trombone Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Jake has performed in venues across the country and on cruise ships. He performs frequently with symphony orchestras, Rock/Salsa/Jazz groups, and musical theatre groups. Jake has performed in over twenty five premieres of new compositions, and has worked with composers on how to better incorporate trombone into their works. He not only plays tenor trombone, 4

but also doubles on Alto/Bass Trombones, Bass Trumpet, Euphonium, and Tuba. When he is not performing or teaching Jake is composing new works for chamber groups including brass quintets, trombone choirs, and jazz combos.

David Bayles, drums WCM faculty member since 1997. B.F.A. Music Education UW-Milwaukee. A member of the Conservatory’s We Six, Mr. Bayles has worked with such jazz artists as Slide Hampton, Barry Harris, David Hazeltine, Brian Lynch, Jack McDuff, Bob Mintzer, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Melvin Rhyne, and Ernie Watts. Dave performs at jazz clubs and music festivals throughout the Midwest. Recording credits include the Luis Diaz Quintet (On the Edge), the Curt Hanrahan Quintet (Hang Time), the Juli Wood Quintet (Movin’ and Groovin’) and the 2005 We Six CD Bird Say. Dave’s orchestral credits include timpani with the Rome Festival Orchestra and percussion with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. As a clinician for Yamaha Music Corporation and Zildjian Cymbals, he travels and teaches widely throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Dave also teaches percussion at UWParkside in Kenosha, WI.

Mark Davis, piano WCM faculty member since 1992. B.S., with honors, Skidmore College. Mr. Davis is Chair of the Jazz Institute and a member of the Conservatory’s We Six. His WCM instructors included Adelaide Banaszynski and David Hazeltine. Later studies included work with jazz legend Barry Harris. He has performed with many jazz luminaries, including Jimmy Heath, Charles McPherson, Slide Hampton, Brian Lynch, and Frank Morgan. He is also on the faculty of Wisconsin Lutheran College, Cardinal Stritch University and Alverno College. Mr. Davis can be heard on the We Six CD Bird Say.

LaRita Craft, piano WCM faculty member since 2009. LaRita holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from Goshen College and a Master’s degree in Piano Performance from the Kansas City Conservatory where she studied with Dr. Robert Weirich. Having also completed a minor in Piano Pedagogy from Goshen College, LaRita has been teaching piano lessons and classes for five years in different places, including the Goshen Community School of the Arts, the Kansas City Conservatory as a graduate teaching assistant, as well as many private students in both Kansas City and Goshen. LaRita enjoys collaborating with other musicians formally and informally on both piano and accordion.

BIOGR APHIES Matthew Schroeder, fingerstyle and rock guitar WCM Faculty member since 1992. B.F.A. with honors in Guitar Performance, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Matthew Schroeder is a Milwaukee based WAMI (Wisconsin Area Music Industry) winning guitarist who is equally at home on acoustic or electric guitar. Matt is one of a handful of players to graduate, with honors, from the short lived cooperative program between The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and The University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee with a performance degree in American fingerstyle guitar. As a fingerstyle guitarist, Mr. Schroeder studied under John Stropes. He has performed in America and Canada, been featured on local television and radio, and can be heard on the CD compilation American Finger-Style Guitar circa 1999. His debut CD Signal was released April 2006. Matt is the Artistic Director for the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music‘s annual Guitar Weekend Workshop and Interlochen College of Creative Arts‘ Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop. Matt currently performs acoustically as a soloist, in a duo with vocalist Lynda Lee and with the trio La Guitarra.

As a rock guitarist, Mr. Schroeder has performed extensively throughout the midwest and beyond.

Past Bands include Blackfish, Pet Engine, Steve Grimm and the Thrill Cats, and Jamie Jess, and the WAMIaward winning Barbeez. Matt is also a featured instructor on the Hal Leonard DVDs Acoustic Guitar Licks Goldmine and Rock Guitar Licks Goldmine , which were released in Spring 2011. www.matthewschroeder.net Brad De Roche, classical guitar “Stirring and Evocative” (Michigan Classical Guitar Society), and “Stylistic and Poetic” (Nicholas Goluses) have been used to describe the performances of Brad DeRoche. An indemand performer, teacher, and lecturer; he

has proven himself to be popular in concerts halls, guitar festivals, and classrooms alike. His style and energy are reflected in his musical interpretations and his charismatic stage presence, while his scholarly achievements have made him a recognized figure in lecture halls, masterclasses and the academic world in general. His dedication to the “re-discovery” of lesser-known composers and their works has guided his vision for unique concert and recording programs.

He is an active concert artist, appearing as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral soloist in North and South America, and has also appeared on public radio and television programs. Brad DeRoche holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Classical Guitar Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music. He also earned degrees from Central Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University. He participated in many masterclasses with prominent concert guitarists including David Russell, Raphaëlla Smits, Paul Galbraith, Fabio Zanon and others. Several composers have written works for him including a solo composition by Prix de Rome prize winner Vincent Frohne. Dr. DeRoche has published articles in the scholarly journal Soundboard; performed, taught or presented seminars at the Eastman Guitar Festival, the Interlochen Guitar Festival, the Las Vegas Guitar Festival, the Alexandria Guitar Festival, the Western Illinois University Guitar Festival and others. Dr. DeRoche is the director of classical guitar studies at the Interlochen Arts Academy, the summer Arts Camp, and is Artistic Director of the Interlochen Guitar Festival. He is also the chair of the music department at Delta College where he teaches courses in guitar and music history. In addition, he holds positions as instructor of guitar at Central Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University.

A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince.

As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics, residencies and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

BIOGR APHIES Timothy Klabunde, violin WCM faculty member since 2005. Mr. Klabunde is the Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has been an orchestra member since 1980. He was a violin and chamber music student of Leonard Sorkin, Abram Loft, Bernard Zaslav and George Sopkin (the Fine Arts Quartet) at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Mr. Klabunde has served as Concertmaster for the Milwaukee Ballet and Milwaukee Civic Orchestras and has appeared as violin soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Manitowoc Symphony. Chamber music appearances have included the Festival de Belles Artes in San Miguel, Mexico, live on WFMT Chicago’s Dame Myra Hess Series, WPR broadcasts from Madison’s Elvejem and Chazen Art Museum and the Fourth Annual International String Quartet Competition in Evian, France.This year includes concerts at the Washington Island Music Festival and as a member of the Prometheus Trio at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

Mr. Klabunde is an adjunct instructor of violin and a member of the Clarus piano trio at Cardinal Stritch University.

Scott Tisdel, cello WCM faculty member since 2000. Associate Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Symphony, has also served as Principal Cellist of the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra since his arrival in Milwaukee in 1987, and has appeared as soloist with both ensembles, as well as with the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies and the Wisconsin Wind Orchestra. Prior

to his arrival in Milwaukee, Mr. Tisdel served as Principal Cello of the Florida Orchestra in Tampa and was a member of both the Oakland and San Jose Symphony Orchestras in California.

In addition to being the founding cellist of the Prometheus Trio, he was a founding member of the Conservatory’s Paganini Trio and the Strings in the Mountains Chamber Music Festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Mr. Tisdel has recorded for Arundax, CRI, Fleur de Son, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music and Oris Records.

Stefanie Jacob, pianist WCM faculty member since 1987. Stefanie Jacob made her solo debut with the Boston Pops at age 17 and her Carnegie Recital Hall debut in 1984. An avid chamber musician, she was twice awarded second prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and was awarded Indiana University’s Leo Weiner Prize for Chamber Music. Ms. Jacob has performed as a soloist with the Milwaukee Symphony, the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra and the Waukesha and Manitowoc Symphonies, and has appeared as a collaborating artist on Milwaukee’s Artist Series at the Pabst and WFMT-Chicago’s nationally broadcast Dame Myra Hess Series. She has recorded for the Arundax, CRI, Fleur de Son and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music labels. A graduate of Harvard and Indiana Universities, Ms. Jacob taught at the University of Tampa from 1985 to 1987, and since then at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, receiving an award for Excellence in Studio Teaching from the Milwaukee Civic Music Association in 2007. also performs as the Duo Coriolan with husband Scott, and as the Duo Cosi with violinist Susan Waterbury.

Matthew Michelic, viola Matthew Michelic enjoys a diverse musical career as a soloist, chamber musician, orchestral player and teacher. Mr. Michelic has been praised in the Denver Post as projecting “an extraordinarily rich viola sound,” and the Milwaukee Sentinel viewed his performance of Hindemith’s Trauermusik as a “touching, masterful interpretation.” He has concertized throughout the United States and internationally as a member of the Kenwood, Da Vinci and Delos Quartets, and he has collaborated with artists such as Robert McDonald, Jeffrey Solow, the Amelia Piano Trio and the Fine Arts Quartet. Mr. Michelic has recorded on the Orion and CRI labels, has been a featured recitalist on WFMT radio in Chicago, and appears regularly on live chamber music broadcasts of Wisconsin Public Radio as a recitalist and as a member of the Lawrence Chamber Players. He has appeared as

recitalist for meetings of the International Viola Congress, the Chicago Viola Society and the International Double Reed Society.

Mr. Michelic has performed with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Aspen Festival Orchestra, and has served as principal violist of the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra. He currently serves as principal violist of the Green Bay Symphony and the Oshkosh Symphony Orchestra. His solo appearances with orchestra include such major works as Harold in Italy, Flos Campi, Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and the Frank Martin Ballade. Mr. Michelic holds degrees from the University of WisconsinMilwaukee and Indiana University. He has studied at the Britten-Pears School in Aldeburgh, England and the Institute for Advanced Musical Studies in Montreux, Switzerland. His principal teachers include Bernard Zaslav and Mimi Zweig, and he has performed in the master classes of Paul Doktor, Bruno Giuranna and William Primrose. His chamber music coaches include members of the Cleveland, Fine Arts, Guarneri, Juilliard and Vermeer Quartets.

BIOGR APHIES Robin Pluer, vocals and accordion WCM faculty member since 2004. Ms. Pluer is a perennial WAMI Award winner as well as the Shepherd Express’ Best Female Vocalist.

She has composed and performed music with Paul Cebar and John Sieger. With Juli Wood, Connie Grauer and Kim Zick (Mrs. Fun) she created The Rhythm Club to perform an eclectic array of jazz, pop, R&B and French songs.

Robin collaborated with Peter Buffett, recording a song for his album, Songs from an East Side Attic. Robin combines vintage French chansons from the 20s, 30s and 40s with contemporary songs which she performs each year at Bastille Days in Milwaukee. Robin studied with Martha Artis (at WCM), Jessie Hauck, and Sylvie Frere. She has also studied at L’Alliance Francaise of Manhattan and at UWM. Juli Wood, tenor saxophone Wood has been blessed with the opportunity to make music her passion and her life for the last 25 years. Juli plays alto, tenor, and baritone saxes, and she loves to sing. She has been lucky enough to play with some great jazz veterans including Melvin Rhyne, Earma Thompson, Jodie Christian, Ira Sullivan, Barry Harris.

She has entertained around the world at jazz festivals and clubs. A few of her favorites were: Skansen Jazz and Blues fest in Stockholm; Pori Jazz in Finland; Bent J’s club in Aarhus, Denmark; Elo Jazz and Blues in Oulu, Finland; Arlandia Jazz fest on Aland Islands; Paappa’s Music Pub in Tampere and Storyville Jazz Club in Helsinki. Stateside she has played extensively throughout 16

the midwest. Her home is now in Chicago where she has led her own groups at Andy’s, Green Mill, Green Dolphin St., Pete Miller’s, and Katerina’s. Juli has been featured at the Chicago Jazz Fest in her own quintet with Mel Rhyne; with Jeru, a Gerry Mulligan tribute; and with an all female jazz band, SHE. Juli played the 2010 Chicago Jazz fest with veteran Chicago jazz pianist, Jodie Christian. She has three CD’s out to date, the first one featuring Melvin Rhyne on the organ called Movin’ and Groovin’ The Juli Wood Quintet, the second recorded with Chicago’s legendary pianist Earma Thompson, and the most recent 5 4 3 2 1 was released in May 2012. All CDs are available at CD Baby.com. For the past twenty years Juli has led a jazz quartet for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s ACE program (Arts and Cultural Education), which performs for third graders in schools throughout the area. Juli is also a member of the Prohibition Orchestra.

Stas Venglevski, accordion His artistry, dazzling technical command, and sensitivity have brought Stanislav “Stas” Venglevski, a native of the Republic of Moldova, increasing acclaim as a virtuoso of the bayan. A two-time first prize winner of Bayan competition in the Republic of Moldova, Stas is a graduate of the Russian Academy of Music in Moscow where he received his Masters Degree in Music under the tutelage of the famed Russian Bayanist, Friedrich Lips. In 1992 he

immigrated to the United States. Stas is an accordionist, a musician, an arranger, an entertainer, and a teacher. Stas’ repertoire includes his original compositions, a broad range of classical, contemporary and ethnic music. He has toured extensively as a soloist throughout the former Soviet Union, Canada, Europe, and the United States, including numerous performances with Doc Severinsen, Steve Allen and with Garrison Keillor on the Prairie Home Companion radio show. Additionally, he has performed with symphony orchestras throughout the United States. He performed the world premiere of Concerto No. 2 by Anthony Galla-Rini and also the world premiere of “Bayan and Beyond,” composed for Stas by Dan Lawitts. He is a regular participant the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community Education Program (ACE); has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra; has done television commercials and performed in theater productions; produced numerous recordings including a transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for Bayan as well as one of original compositions.

He has published several books of original compositions. Stas founded Accordion XXI Century Series in 2010 so that the Midwest audiences can experience the amazing range of the accordion and bayan by bringing artists from all over the world. In a concert setting, these gifted musicians share their skills and cultures to provide the audience with a unique musical experience.

Peter Roller, guitar Peter Roller has a PhD in Ethnomusicology from UW-Madison and he is Associate Professor and Chair of the Music Dept at Alverno College. Roller has a book being readied for publication by History Press on Milwaukee Garage Bands. Based on oral histories about amateur Rock groups from the mid 1950s through the early 2000s, it shows the value of such music-making

in the neighborhoods of anytowns like Milwaukee with each generation. Roller has performed with Robin since they both were in Paul Cebar & the Milwaukeeans in the late 80s. He has also performed and recorded with bluesman Steve Cohen, black gospel quartet The Masonic Wonders, and ukulele star Lil Rev. Roller’s solo slide guitar piece “Rancho Mirage” was included on the best-selling compilation Masters of Acoustic Guitar (Narada) and his first full length CD of original guitar music, Blue Fog, was released in 2010.

MRS. FUN (Connie Grauer, piano and vocals; and Kim Zick, drums) MRS.FUN plays nu jazz. Complex, sophisticated and adventurous, their music is a unique blend of off-center jazz, ultra-funk, spoken word rap, and their own brand of neo-cabaret. Intelligent lyrics, stellar musicianship and a dynamic stage presence are hallmarks of their music. The MRS.FUN sound is derived from Connie Grauer’s funky bass-driven keyboard playing, combined with Kim Zick’s skillful in-the-pocket drumming. “Grauer is a piano player with few equals whose drive and energy spills across the stage and into the audience like nitrous oxide. She’s got a left hand that doesn’t quit, the mark of any great pianist, and a right hand with limitless boundaries.” Zick holds court as a “heart-stopping drummer” whose “grooves get so far out, most people need a map to get back.” Voted Best Contemporary Jazz Group by the Wisconsin Area Music Industry(WAMI) three consecutive years, Grauer and Zick have also received WAMI awards for Best Instrumentalist: keyboards and drums. Grauer has also received awards for Best Female Vocalist and Best Stage Entertainer.
