D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S State Fair is a hybrid musical. Originally a film, it was converted to a stage production in 1996. The creators added several songs to the film score from the vast Rodgers and Hammerstein archives of musical numbers that had been written but never used. In doing so they replicated the time-tested R&H formula. People often ask, “Why do theatre groups always come back to these classics?” The answer is simple: because they work. They use clever lyrics with beautiful melodies to advance and enhance the story. In “It Might As Well Be Spring” we learn more about Margy’s character than a 30-minute scene would tell us. Over many years in community theatre I have directed countless productions of R&H classics. I love them all. This show takes us back to 1946, after a great war, to give us a glimpse of what life was like in our heartland when we were optimistic about the future, and poised for an era of peace and possibilities. Join us in celebrating “the best State Fair in our state.” John Baiocchi Director S P O T L I G H T O N T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S You’re in Brunswick, Iowa, and life is simple. It is late summer in 1946 and the Frake family is just about to leave for the Iowa County Fair. If you are the father, Abel, your biggest worry is whether “Blue Boy,” your prize boar, can win that Blue Ribbon, but his neighbor, Dave Miller, bets otherwise. If you’re Melissa, Abel’s wife, you have your heart set on a prize this year for your mincemeat. Poor son Wayne is in the dumps ‘cause his best girl has to stay home and cannot go to the Fair. And, if you’re daughter Margy and feeling low, you just might have spring fever, and “It Might As Well Be Spring.” You’ll soon see that the evening will be “A Grand Night for Singing” at “Our State Fair.” So hop aboard and let Rodgers and Hammerstein and WCT help you get lost in time with the songs of State Fair. That is what we at WCT hope to do every time you step foot into our magical world. Next time you come, why not bring a friend or another couple? They might want to experience the magic too!

M AD CORNER It’s no secret that I love musicals. As a performer, as a director, as a choreographer, as a producer, as a teacher, as an audience member - there is no other theatrical format that brings me so much joy. A lot of times I hear people ask “Why do an old R&H show?” The answer is simple. They are fantastic shows. Corny? Sure. Predictable. Maybe. But nothing makes us smile more than the wonderful world created by these masters of the American Musical Theatre. I would like to thank everyone that supports WCT! We wouldn’t be here without you. All of our volunteers help us out in any number of ways by acting, ushering, serving on the board of directors, providing maintenance or office support, or working on sets, costumes, and props. Our patrons come to WCT see quality live entertainment, the fruits of our volunteers’ labor. Our donors help keep us financially sound by their gifts to the Annual Operating Fund, the Endowment Fund, or by including us in their planned giving. The generosity of the Waukesha community astounds me, and I truly appreciate all the time, talent, and money that you give to WCT. Enrich. Challenge. Entertain. That says it all, so keep watching, keep participating, and keep supporting this cultural cornerstone. We couldn’t do it without you. John Cramer Managing Artistic Director WAU K E S H A C I V I C T H E AT R E M I S S I O N S TAT E M E N T WCT’s mission is to provide quality live theatre performances and educational opportunities that enrich, challenge, and entertain both participants and audience members.
