DIRECTOR’S NOTE Laramie, Wyoming wasn’t a town brimming with violent homophobes. It was a town home to a handful of homophobes and a lot of apathy. A great deal of the population was content to “Live and let live,” pretending the LGBTQ+ people in their community didn’t exist. That also meant pretending Laramie’s homophobes weren’t perpetuating subtle violence. They realized their neighbors would overlook everyday homophobia and grew bolder until two men came across Matthew Shepard at a bar on October 6, 1998. When the “seeds of violence” are planted in a community, they are easy to ignore. Instances of homophobia that wouldn’t rise to the level of a hate crime, such as calling things “gay” as an insult or refusing to date transgender people, can still be extremely damaging. These actions pave the way for serious violations of LBGTQ+ people’s human rights, like denying housing or jobs to people on the basis of sexuality or gender, or committing violent hate crimes like the one committed against Matthew Shepard. Romaine Patterson, a friend of Matthew’s and one of the many people you will meet today, wrote, “Some people think when they sit down to watch The Laramie Project that they are going to see a play about Laramie, Wyoming. In fact, what many people realize is that they are seeing a play about their own hometown.” What struck me when I first read The Laramie Project was how familiar the people of Laramie were to me. While they may have unfamiliar names and faces, in their stories I see my friends, my neighbors, my family, myself. From the Walmart at the edge of town to the pool table in the corner of the local bar, it was both comforting and uncomfortable to see my hometown reflected back at me in the pages of the script. It spurred me to look for the seeds of violence in myself and the people I loved and to speak up when I saw them. Since 1998, a lot has improved for the American LGBTQ+ population: national laws regarding hate crimes have been passed; gay, lesbian, and transgender citizens can now enlist in the military (although the transgender ban was lifted a mere five months ago); representation in television and film is on the rise; and same-sex marriage was legalized by the Supreme Court in 2015. As important as these milestones have been, the work left to do looms large. According to the Natonal LGBT Bar Association, one in five American LGBTQ+ people will experience a hate crime in their lives, and that number jumps to 1 in 4 for transgender people. Over 100 bills have been introduced in various statehouses in 2021 alone which seek to impede the rights of transgender youth. Two of these bills were introduced in the Wisconsin assembly, authored by Rep. Barbara Dittrich of Oconomowoc and backed by nine other representatives so far. At the time of writing, 21 trans or gendernonconforming people, the majority of which have been Black or Latinx women, have been murdered so far in 2021, according to the Human Rights Campaign. When faced with the choice between apathy and activism, Romaine Patterson chose activism. Following Matthew’s murder, she became an LGBTQ+ rights activist and The Laramie Project

DIRECTOR’S NOTE cont. founded a counter-protest group called Angel Action. “So many times people have asked me how I had the courage to do the things I have done in my life,” she said. “I laugh a little because none of my actions were done out of bravery, but out of a simple truth that I lead my life by. I simply try to do the right thing when given the chance. Each of us has a role… My question to you is, when you leave today what will YOU do to make the world a better place? What is your role?” Madison Penzkover Director
NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The Laramie Project marks WCT’s fifth Mainstage show this season, and I want to start by thanking you for being here. Thank you for taking the precautions and following the rules so that we can be together safely. Protocols are going to be changing and we are watching recommendations closely - we will always act with the health and safety of our community as our number one priority. Waukesha Civic Theatre has been open to the public at a reduced capacity and virtually since October and we have been able to provide artistic opportunities that so many people have needed to get their spirits through this pandemic. From theatre classes, cabarets, radio plays, dramas, and musicals, we have tried to provide an experience for everyone. We have had the pleasure of having audiences with as few as ten people and audiences of over one hundred, and each of those audiences were warm and receptive. I want to applaud the artists who have been on stage and backstage, who have been committed to warmly welcoming our community in any way they are comfortable and providing a Responsible Theatre experience. Saying that this year has been a challenge feels small and insincere, because this year has been more than a challenge, and it has often felt insurmountable to all of us. It has caused us all to stop and reevaluate every single thing we do in our lives, in our theatre, in our industry. COVID-19 has hit our industry like a storm - it has shaken us, left us battered and weary. But like all storms, in the quiet of the winding down winds, and the first glow of sunlight on the horizon, we find hope. As the arts industry plans its reopening after the storm, we find that everything has changed, and I choose to look for what has been changed for good - I am looking for what those first rays of light are showing us. The light is shining on equity practices and a global movement for industry change, and we are listening and acting. WCT is reaching out, building our teams of artists and volunteers, and working to form real connections and relationships. The light has shone on sustainability and how we prepare for any and all things in order for WCT to weather any storm.

Waukesha Civic Theatre
NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR cont. WCT has weathered the storm through support of our donors, sponsors, and grantors, through the hard work, sweat, and tears of our staff and volunteers, and we now will work to help other theatres pick back up and get back on their feet. We have gathered the resources to survive this storm and as part of our mission to Entertain, Enrich, Engage, and Challenge, we will share what we have learned and lift up others in our community. Lastly, I want to thank the WCT team. Thank you to the staff, who have been hit by wave after wave of challenge and have overcome through this difficult time. You are committed to providing our community with an authentic and meaningful experience and I cannot wait to see where we go from here. Thank you to the artists - directors, music directors, musicians, lighting and sound designers, scenic designers, props designers, costume designers. You have worked with shoestring budgets and a shortage of time through this pandemic and have created beautiful art and have told beautiful stories. Thank you to the teachers and students who have innovated, have created and performed with masks and distance, and STILL connected with each other in the way only theatre can help you connect. Thank you to the volunteers - the actors, the ushers, the Board of Directors, the committee members, the organizers, and cleaners, the sorters and mailers, the heartbeat of our theatre. You give so much. The heart of volunteerism is to give without receiving, but I hope that when you give here at WCT that you do receive something in return. We hope you feel appreciated and valued, that your time and talents have purpose and are seen. We see you and we love you. Rhonda Schmidt Executive Director
