Everything that makes a show great is here, now all we have to do is perform it for you.” Brian loved directing this show and also loved working with this particular cast and crew; it was truly a family effort. Love to his family and friends and to his loving wife Erika who lets him go out to play. Also, lots of love to the new main character in his life, Lukas, his first-born son who is turning 11 months during the run of the show, and who makes Brian and Erika smile every day. D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S It is not often that one gets to direct a show that is located just about where one grew up. I have truly enjoyed working on this show, it has been a labor of love, as many of the shows I work on have been, but this one is a bit special because of the very special people working on it with me (you know who you are). I have some miles with these people so they can kind of figure out where I am going with things and what I might be thinking about a certain way a certain scene will play out. This show is about as creative as you can get with a script. There are the wonderful lines of course but after that, the director has all kinds of creative freedom to do as he or she wishes with the set design, lighting, costumes, and movements on stage. It required people that are both passionate and dedicated to their craft as well all pulling together to put on this production for you. The characters are all very colorful and the actors I was blessed with do a fantastic job of bringing them to life for you. I am so pleased how everyone came together on this show and it was a lot of work to be sure, but I hope you will enjoy what we have put together for you. Much love goes out to my lovely bride Erika as I was far busier working on this show than many others, so I was gone and not available to her ... a lot. Also, to my now 11-month-old son Lukas, I am sorry I was not home after work to play with you or put you to bed for the past seven weeks or so. I promise to make that up to you, buddy. I’m sure both you and Mommy will remind me. Okay, get ready to experience Christmas in 1986 in Brookfield, Wisconsin that was A Tiny Miracle with a Fiberoptic Unicorn. Enjoy. Brian D. Zelinski Director
S P O T L I G H T O N T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S Are you good at keeping secrets? I’d like to invite you to relax that rule a little…… I have always maintained that the Waukesha Civic Theatre is truly the city’s “best-kept secret.” It is an honor for me to be on the board of directors for a community theatre that has provided quality entertainment for 54 years. We have such a wonderful, professional venue in which our local talent is spotlighted and encouraged to grow. Yet, surprisingly, there are still some local residents who are not even aware of this entertainment gem located on our Main Street. I welcome you to A Tiny Miracle with a Fiberoptic Unicorn. This play is set in the mid‘80s and lets us in on the trials and tribulations of a 13-year-old boy in Brookfield, WI. I don’t want to let you know any more, or you won’t be surprised. If you like what you see at the theatre spread the word - tell your friends, neighbors, family, co-workers, anyone you know! Keep the spirit of our local community theatre going strong and encourage the tremendous talent and enthusiasm of our volunteers. Better yet, become a volunteer yourself! We are always looking for someone to lend a helping hand, onstage or off. Don’t keep our secret … share it with everyone you know. Spread the word and share the little Theatre on Main Street. Enjoy! Susan Hughes Secretary, Board of Directors 6 Waukesha Civic Theatre
M AD CORNER I had the pleasure of corresponding with the playwright, Don Zolodis, and I asked him to write something for our playbill, which he graciously agreed to do. Enjoy! John Cramer Managing Artistic Director Bryan Adams’ “The Summer of `69” is a pretty good song. I’m not saying it’s great, but it’s okay when it comes on classic rock stations. I don’t immediately want to turn off the radio. He sings a lot about how those were the best days of his life, and how he played his guitar until his fingers bled. He sings: “Me and some guys from school, had a band we tried real hard, Joey quit, Jordy got married, shoulda known we’d never get far.” It’s catchy. Only one problem: In the summer of 1969, Bryan Adams was nine years old. Those guys from school were in elementary school. And I don’t know anyone who got married before they hit fifth grade, but apparently Jordy did. Now, why should I get upset about this fact? Adams doesn’t announce that everything in this song is true, but it seems like it has the ring of authenticity to it. Why would he sing about an experience that wasn’t his own? Was there some reason that a song titled “Summer of `77” wouldn’t be as good? Who knows? Maybe it just sounded better this way. I bring this up because when I started writing the play that would become A Tiny Miracle with a Fiberoptic Unicorn, I was consciously trying to write an autobiographical play. I failed pretty spectacularly at that. As it turns out, my years in middle school in Wisconsin weren’t all that dramatic, and it was much more fun to imagine what could have been, rather than what was. And in the process of imagining other possibilities, still other possibilities occurred to me that would make an even better play, and the result, as you will see, is that almost nothing that occurs in the play actually happened to me. My Mom and Dad will breathe easier when they realize the Mom and Dad in the play don’t resemble them one bit, and my brother will most likely be happy that he appears nowhere in the script. (Although I do continue to threaten him that one day that play will appear, and he had best begin running now.) Regardless, just like in Bryan Adams’ song, I think it sounds better this way.

Flex Pass requests are processed in the order in which they are received (based upon availability). A Flex Pass Voucher is valid for any of the six Mainstage productions.
CIVIC SENIOR PLAYERS The Civic Senior Players are a dedicated group of Senior Citizens who have a craving to entertain others and who want to become skilled at it. The Players will devote time and energy to becoming actors. There is no charge to the seniors participating. This entertainment will be provided at no charge to any senior organization or residence, and the only requirement is an audience of at least 20 who would enjoy some laughs and a good time. Donations to WCT are accepted. If you would like more information, call Carol at (262) 549-1091.
SEASON TICKET HOLDER EXCHANGES Season Ticket Exchanges are processed in the order in which they are received (based on availability). Exchanges must be done in person, or by mail, e-mail, or fax. E-mail to boxoffice@ waukeshacivictheatre.org or fax to (262) 547-8454, a copy of your VOIDED ticket(s). Exchanges can only take place for the same production and must be conducted BEFORE your original ticket date occurs.
ACAP PLAYMAKERS provide daytime performances (often of original works) based upon school curricula, themes, and ideas relevant to children at various stages of their education. The fall PlayMakers production is geared to our elementary students, and the spring production is produced for middle school students. While offered primarily to school groups, these familyfriendly shows are great for public, private, and home school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops, senior centers, and your family! Please call (262) 5470708 for ticket prices and information. PlayMakers rehearse and perform in the daytime, and are always looking for new actors and technical personnel.
PLEASE DON’T BE A “NO SHOW!” If you have tickets but cannot make the performance, why not give your tickets to friends to enjoy or let us resell them? You may be able to consider the price of the tickets that you turn in as a taxdeductible donation. CIVIC BROADWAY SINGERS Are you looking for upbeat entertainment for your next special event? The Civic Broadway Singers perform year-round in southeast Wisconsin under the musical direction of Abby Lorenz. The 30-voice group sings memorable Broadway favorites for a variety of events, from company picnics and Christmas parties to corporate lunches and grand openings. The Civic Broadway Singers provide their own piano and sound system and will perform for groups of all sizes in exchange for a donation to the theatre. For scheduling the Civic Broadway Singers at your next event, please call Abby at (414) 350-8713 or e-mail her at AbbyLorenz@wi.rr.com. 14 Waukesha Civic Theatre
ACCESSIBILITY The Margaret Brate Bryant Civic Theatre Building is fully handicapped-accessible, and WCT is proud to offer a number of services for our patrons who have special needs (a four-week notice is required and services are based upon availability). For the hearing impaired we have a T-Coil Loop System, T-Coil Listening Devices, and FM listening devices that will amplify the sounds of the performance. Patrons must have hearing aids with telecoils installed and activated to use the Loop System. Patrons who are blind can receive audio descriptive services for the performance. Wheelchair accessibility is available in two forms: transfer seats and wheelchair positions.
T H E AT R E I N F O R M AT I O N ( c o n t .) PATRONS Please refrain from wearing highly-scented colognes, perfumes, hand cream, or aftershave to performances, as many people have allergies or respiratory problems. WCT is concerned for all patrons and we appreciate your cooperation.
PARKING Parking is available on Main Street, in the Riverfront Plaza parking area behind the Theatre, off Barstow Street, in the parking facility on Broadway, and at other locations in downtown Waukesha. REMINDER As a courtesy to those who arrive on time, Latecomers will be seated at First Break!
