DIRECTOR’S NOTE How does one write a director’s note in the middle of a pandemic? What are the right words to say, and the safest choices to make? I am thrilled and honored to be at the helm of the first big project WCT is putting on in over eight months. But to be honest? It has also been terrifying. However, I have an incredible cast, team, and staff support that have made this process feel safe and very much needed. Now more than ever we need art, support, and togetherness in our community. Luckily for all of us, WCT found the perfect show to reinspire all of those things this holiday season. I cannot begin to explain my love and appreciation for each person involved in this project. I have learned so much about myself as an artist and a human throughout these rehearsals. I have learned to adapt and think creatively in ways I never have before. And, most importantly, I have learned not to take any of these moments for granted. I sincerely hope this show can bring you a little piece of joy during these crazy times. Thank you for being here, thank you for wearing your mask, and thank you for supporting the arts in Waukesha. Ryan Albrechtson

NOTE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Friends and Family of Waukesha Civic Theatre, What an extraordinary experience working to keep our theatre going and connecting with our community during 2020 and the Global Pandemic of COVID-19. From the very first decision to alter our season for your health and safety, the Board of Directors and I have been evaluating our choices on a monthly, weekly, sometimes daily basis to move forward with the future of our theatre at the center of our choices - and our first priority, the health and safety of our staff, volunteers, students, and patrons. In March, we made the difficult decision to close our doors and move all of our programming to virtual, which included virtual classes, programs on social media, a brand new podcast, a crowdfunding campaign, and virtual programming. We led the industry by live streaming Big Fish, a full musical, holding all-virtual theatre classes, and continued leading in our fundraising efforts - two virtual fundraisers which raised over $20,000 combined. This moment in history has pushed us to innovate and we are proud of our efforts to adapt and connect with our community in new and virtual ways. And now is the next shift, to bring audiences back into our building in accordance with county health recommendations, and with the research of the CDC, and advice of the Event Safety Alliance. We have begun with small audiences for our PIX Flix Film Series, sponsored by Century Fence Company, and have continued with a successful cabaret on October 30. We invited a reduced capacity audience of 65 to attend the performance and had over 80 virtual viewers tuning in to the live stream or recording. Now you find yourselves watching our first Mainstage production, It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play. The choice of this production came far before the health crisis appeared, and we are chalking it up to a lucky choice - a radio play is a natural production to practice social distancing on stage. The entire production team has been a dream in creating lasting health and safety protocols, and going above and beyond to protect each other while creating art. It is a new world - one with more sanitizer and fewer handshakes, but the need for theatre, music, and art is as strong and vibrant as it ever has been. I am intrigued how this moment in history will be woven into the stories we tell on stage and off, but I am certain that this global community will be stronger than ever and I know the art arts industries will come back because the support we have received is humbling and overwhelming. The connections that theatres have made to support one another, to collaborate and strategize, and to lift each other up is inspiring and if COVID-19 is responsible for that togetherness, then for that I am grateful. Thank you for being here, thank you for trusting us to take care of you. Thank you for staying home if you are sick. Thank you for giving of yourselves in so many ways. We can’t wait to see you again! Kindly, Rhonda Schmidt Executive Director 12
