R AC H E L YO R K Rachel York is a dynamic and versatile actress, singer, dancer and comedienne. She is best known for her critically acclaimed Broadway performances in City of Angels, Les Misérables, Victor/ Victoria (Drama Desk Award), The Scarlet Pimpernel, Sly Fox, and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Rachel also turned heads on television with her courageous portrayal of Lucille Ball in the CBS movie, Lucy. Rachel was born in Orlando, Florida, the youngest of four children. Her passion for music and acting was ignited at an early age as she listened to her mother sing and play the piano. At 17, Rachel enjoyed her professional debut. She was cast in the singing chorus of a dinner theater production of Kiss Me, Kate. In true Peggy Sawyer fashion, Rachel was asked to go on for the lead with very short notice and gave a wonderfully received performance. Later that year, Rachel earned a scholarship to the American Center for Music Theatre at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, which prompted a move to Los Angeles. She began studying with acting coach Aaron Speiser. Impressed with Rachel’s talent and dedication, Mr. Speiser encouraged her to move to New York. He felt it was the best place for her to develop her skills and make her mark. Bright-eyed, and only 19, Rachel ventured to the Big Apple to study her craft. In need of a theatrical agent, Rachel boldly walked into the office of agent Bill Timms. Bill recalls, “She had just stepped off ‘the bus’ wearing a bright blue dress, handed me this amazing demo-tape of her singing songs from Evita and blew me away performing monologues from Nuts and Sophie’s Choice, using an impeccable Polish accent. I signed her on the spot. She can do anything.” Bill’s instincts served him well when Rachel got her first big break playing the seductive and playful role of Mallory in the original Tony Awardwinning production of City of Angels. Her performance won critical acclaim. Since then Rachel has gone on to give

inspiring theatrical performances as Fantine in Les Misérables; Rachel in Putting It Together (Drama Desk nomination) opposite Julie Andrews; Irene St. Claire in The Crucifer of Blood with Billy Crudup; Norma Cassidy again with Ms. Andrews in Victor/Victoria (Drama Desk Award); Marguerite in The Scarlet Pimpernel; Lilli/Kate in the national and London tours of the Tony Award-winning revival of Kiss Me, Kate filmed for PBS (Helen Hayes and IRNE nominations); Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes (Ovation nomination); Dorothy in Summer of ‘42; Miss Fancy and later Mrs. Truckle with Richard Dreyfuss in Sly Fox; Ruth Sutton with LaChanze in Dessa Rose (Drama Desk and Drama League nominations); Mother in Ragtime; Christine Colgate with Jonathan Pryce in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; Edith Herbert in My One and Only; Guenevere opposite Michael York in the national tour of Camelot (Carbonell Award); Cecily Pigeon in the Reprise! staged reading of The Odd Couple with Jason Alexander and Martin Short; the irrepressible Dolly Gallagher Levi in Hello, Dolly! (IRNE Award); The Witch in Sondheim’s Into the Woods; and the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot. In addition, Rachel earned rave reviews in the world premiere of the new Broadway-bound BrickmanElice musical Turn of the Century co-starring Jeff Daniels and directed by Tommy Tune. She also thrilled audiences and critics alike in the world premiere of The 101 Dalmatians Musical creating the role of the notorious dog-napping villainess extraordinaire, Cruella De Vil. In concert, Rachel’s numerous appearances include the National Symphony and the Pittsburgh Pops under the direction of conductor Marvin Hamlisch, Broadway Showstoppers with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, The Sound of Music at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under the direction of John Mauceri, the San Francisco Symphony, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Utah Symphony, the St. Louis Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Israeli Opera, and the Wisconsin Lutheran College 5

In addition, she has been a featured guest soloist in numerous tribute programs performing the works of Sondheim, Porter, Coleman, Gershwin, Bernstein, Kander and Ebb, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Ahrens and Flaherty, Boublil and Schönberg, Wildhorn, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and many others.

has also appeared on several popular TV series including Hannah Montana, Frasier, Reba, Numb3rs, Close to Home, Arli$$, Spin City, The Naked Truth and Diagnosis Murder. In addition, she is the voice of Bitty in Higglytown Heroes and Circe on The Justice League. Rachel’s debut solo album, Let’s Fall in Love, has been an enormous success since its release and was named one of the Top Ten Vocal CDs of the year by Talkin’ Broadway. She can also be heard on the soundtrack of Billy Bathgate, the live in concert recording of Broadway Showstoppers: Best of the Tonys with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, and the original cast recordings of City of Angels, Putting It Together, Victor/Victoria, The Scarlet Pimpernel Encore, Dessa Rose, Summer of ’42, and Opal, Honky Highway and Other Theatre Songs.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Book, Music & Lyrics by Paul Deiss

PLAY SYNOPSIS Based on the original story by Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow tells the story of Tarry Town, a place where strange things happen and the townsfolk seem entranced by spirits. Ichabod Crane, a well-educated teacher who comes to live in Tarry Town, meets a mysterious fate. Legend has it that he is the victim of the dreaded ‘headless horseman’ who allegedly haunts Sleepy Hollow. Before his disappearance, Ichabod had been at a party at the home of Katrina Van Tassel, a young lady with whom Ichabod was much smitten. During the festivities, he was humiliated by Brom Van Brunt, Ichabod’s egotistical rival. He is also frightened by tales of spirits and strange happenings in Tarry Town. He left the party wondering whether he had been the target of a cruel joke by all of the partygoers. After his disappearance, his horse was found grazing in a nearby pasture. His hat was found trampled on the path, and the slimy remains of a pumpkin were found nearby. Whatever happened to Ichabod? No one knows for sure. Perhaps he left town. Perhaps Brom had something to do with his disappearance. Perhaps he was the victim of a cruel prank. Or perhaps a headless ghost spirited him away, as legend has it. A B O U T T H E AU T H O R Washington Irving was born April 3, 1783, in New York City. He was the youngest of a rich merchant’s eleven children. In school he was an average student who enjoyed music, books, and art. Though he would practice law on Wall Street, work in his family’s cutlery business, and even serve (later in life) as U.S. Minister to Spain, he loved books and writing. By the time he was 35 he devoted himself to his writing. Much of Irving’s writing was influenced by his travels. Excursions up the Hudson River were followed by a two-year stay in southern Europe. While there, Irving filled notebooks with his impressions of people. He wrote satires based upon those notes about people. He published his first book, A History of New York, in 1809, under his pen name, Diedrich Knickerbocker. Other famous books included The Sketch Book (1819, which included The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle), Tales of a Traveler (1824), and The Alhambra (1832). Irving also wrote biographies of Oliver Goldsmith, Mahomet, and George Washington. Irving never married, being happy to spend his time at home with his brother and five nieces. Washington Irving died on November 28, 1859 in Irvington, New York. He was 76. FA S C I N AT I N G FAC T S 10 Fascinating Facts about The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Washington Irving: 1. Washington Irving was born at the end of the Revolutionary War on April 3, 1783. He died on the eve of the Civil War, on November 28, 1859. 2. Irving’s parents, Scottish-English immigrants, were great admirers of General George Washington, and named their son after their hero. 3. The fictional Sleepy Hollow is actually the lower Hudson Valley area near Tarrytown, N.Y. Wisconsin Lutheran College 13

FA S C I N AT I N G FAC T S ( c o n t .) 4. The legend featured in the story is that of The Headless Horseman, the ghost of a soldier who lost his head to a cannon-ball during “some nameless battle” of the American Revolutionary War and who “rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head.” 5. “Brom” is short for Abraham. 6. With Irving’s companion piece Rip Van Winkle, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is the earliest American work of fiction to still be read widely today. 7. In 1842, American President Tyler appointed Irving Minister to Spain – a position we would now call ambassador. This meant he traveled throughout Europe as a diplomatic representative of the United States. (I wonder if he told the other Ministers scary stories?) 8. Sleepy Hollow is a village in Westchester County, New York, United States. Known as North Tarrytown from 1874 through 1997, it was officially renamed in March 1997. From the end of the American Revolution to incorporation in 1874, the hamlet was called Beekmantown. 9. Washington Irving is actually buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. 10. Knickerbocker (from Irving’s pen name) came to mean someone from New York. The basketball team, the New York Knicks (Knickerbockers), still use it today. With an uneasy mixture of Christian morality and glittering wit, Lady Windermere’s Fan satirizes the superficiality and hypocrisy of Victorian England. Gossip, intrigue, misunderstandings and deception whirl their way through London’s parlors and ballrooms until, in the end, true honor is found in one whom society considered the least honorable. This new musical adaptation is faithful to the play’s original story line, with script and lyrics that keep Wilde’s witty repartee intact. The Wisconsin Lutheran College Theatre Department will present this musical adaptation in the Raabe Theatre on Thursday, November 5 through Saturday, November 13, 2010. On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., experience soulful expression, instrumental virtuosity, and playful banter, all the hallmarks of an Intersection event. Ranging from a Piazzolla tango to a West Side Story melody to a Mendelssohn scherzo, an evening spent with Intersection is an unforgettable one for any audience member. intersectiontrio.com The Wisconsin Lutheran Choir, Chamber Choir and Chapel Choir will present the Christmas Choral Concert, a presentation of seasonal sacred choral music ranging from the ancient to the contemporary, popular Advent hymns to traditional European madrigals.
