ABOUT THE BAND For those not familiar with this musical iconic family from northwest Ohio (Bowling Green, to be exact) one is in for an ear-bending revelation. These four violinist brothers encompass a vivid blend of bluegrass, classical, and rock genres.

Each brother is a classical virtuoso in his own right, and brings rich and diverse talents to their sound. As a family they have been making music together for over 25 years. They were named “Musical Family of America” in 1989 by presidential decree, were the subject of a nationally televised PBS documentary in 1993, and two brothers (Jason and Zach) were featured in the film documentary Music From the Inside Out in 2005. Their first album as brothers, Classical Grass, sold out of its first printing.

Coming together with Tony Trischka, Mark Cosgrove, Don Liuzzi and a variety of bass players, the band began performing and recording in 2004. Weapons of Grass Construction, with its progressive mix of genres, gives a direct nod to their bluegrass tradition and their classical training, while adding a deeper infusion of rock and blues.

BIOGR APHIES ALEX DEPUE became interested in fiddling at age seven, and began competing in old-time fiddle contests at the age of 12. He reigned as the Michigan State Fiddling Champion from 1994-1998; won the first-place trophy at the Walnut Valley National Fiddling Championship in Winfield, Kansas in 1999 and 2005; won first place in the Halletsville, TX “Gone to Texas National Fiddling Championship” in 2000; won first place in the Alabama state fiddle contest in 2006 and 2007; and won first place in the California state fiddle contest in 2007. He has been ranked among the top 10 fiddlers in the nation at the Grand Masters Fiddling Championship (Nashville, TN).

In addition to performing, Alex is a published composer and arranger of music. Alex has a self-produced CD available which features pieces he arranged and/or composed. With a background in both classical violin and fiddling, and an ability to play not only the violin but also the viola, mandolin, guitar, double bass, percussion, and piano, Alex is an artist that can produce any style of music.

WALLACE DEPUE received his Doctorate of Musical Arts (DMA) degree in Violin Performance from the University of Texas at Austin in 2006.

Wallace served as assistant principle of the Austin Lyric Opera Company 2000-2006; is presently assistant concertmaster of the Philly Pops; and most recently, toured as associate concertmaster of the John Williams’ “Star Wars” National Tour Concert Orchestra, and has performed as an extra violinist with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Wallace is the band’s lead vocalist, and shows his vocal versatility by singing in three very distinctive styles on their new CD, Weapons of Grass Construction.

JASON DEPUE is currently a member of the First Violin Section of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Formerly the Concertmaster of the New York String Seminar, he attended Encore School for Strings, and the Curtis Institute of Music. In furthering the art of violin playing, he has performed live recitals of the Paganini 24 Caprices, as well as the Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin by J.S. Bach. He is the founder of the Guarneri Quartet Room in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Principal violin teachers include William de Pasquale, David Cerone, Vasile Beluska, and Boris Brant.

ZACHARY DEPUE is formerly a first violinist with The Philadelphia Orchestra and a graduate of the

Curtis Institute. Zach is now the Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and a founding member of the classically trained garage band/trio Time For Three.

DON LIUZZI, drums and vocals, is the principal timpanist of The Philadelphia Orchestra. He teaches at the Curtis Institute, plays in Philorch Jazz sextet, POPG percussion group, and has a solo percussion/chamber music CD release on Equilibrium Records. He is the coordinating producer of the feature length documentary film Music From the Inside Out. He also conducts the Philadelphia All City High School Orchestra.

MARK COSGROVE, guitar. Mark’s distinctive, creative flatpicking guitar sound is known and respected on both sides of the Atlantic, through both his own recordings and as a sideman and session player for Jerry Douglas and others. He has won the U.S. National Flatpicking Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kansas and also the Doc Watson Guitar Championship in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Aside from performing with the DePue Brothers Band, Mark tours with Italian guitarist Roberto Dalla Vecchia, with his own band, and as a solo artist. He is a sought after instructor as well, teaching at guitar camps around the country and abroad. Mark has released four recordings on the FGM label.

MIKE MUNFORD, banjo, raised in the Baltimore/Washington D.C. area, has been performing professionally for 35 years.

Along with the DePue Brothers Band, he currently tours with Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen. He has recorded and performed with Peter Rowan on the grammy nominated “Bluegrass Boy”.He has recently toured with Tony Trischka for his “Double Banjo Spectacular” show.

Mike has also been on three U.S. State Department tours to Central Asia with an earlier D.C based band. Mike’s banjo style is a true blend of traditional and contemporary, in the Trischka/Fleck model, but with a style and fluidity all his own.

KEVIN MACCONNELL, Bassist. Living in the Philadelphia area since 1982, Kevin has performed with jazz greats, Mel Torme, Nancy Wilson, Billy Eckstine and Joe Williams, as well as a wide variety of other international performers such as, Natalie Cole, Marilyn McCoo, Diahann Caroll, Merv Griffin and opera diva, Denyce Graves. He has performed and recorded with tenor saxophonist, Earnie Watts and local jazz legends, Larry McKenna and Tony Miceli, with whom he performs regularly. No stranger to the classical scene, Kevin has performed with the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and many classical ensembles in and around the area. He began performing with DePue Brothers Band in 2007, and performs on occasion with Mark Cosgrove’s band, Good Medicine.

TONY TRISCHKA, Special Guest and banjo. Perhaps the most influential banjo player in the roots music world, Tony is a Grammy nominated, critically acclaimed recording artist and performer. For almost 40 years, his music has inspired generations of bluegrass and acoustic musicians.

Considered one of the banjo’s best practitioners, he is also one of its most respected and sought after instructors having authored 16 books and 4 DVDs. He is currently overseeing the Tony Trischka School of Banjo, a cutting edge, on-line, interactive, instructional website with a world-wide reach. His most recent releases, “Double Banjo Bluegrass Spectacular” and “Territory,” have climbed the charts to prove, once again, that Tony is one of the most innovative banjo players of our day.

RODNEY WHITTENBERG, guest guitarist, and producer of their new CD Weapons of Grass Construction, and the group’s producer, is an emmy award winning television and film composer, founder of the company, Melodyvision, music and film professor, and arts education advocate. He has several film scores to his credit including Infested, Hard Coal, Last of the Bootleg Miners, and the soon to be released Cost of a Soul.

BIOGR APHY For the last four years, The Unexpected Boys have amazed audiences with their award-winning tribute to one of the most recognized bands to ever hit the airwaves: Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons.

They have headlined in such cities and venues as The Atlantis in Dubai, Istanbul, Athens, the Caribbean, and all over the USA. The Unexpected Boys are featured artists on Royal Caribbean, Holland America, Princess and Cunard Cruise Lines, and have appeared at over 1,000 corporate and social functions all over the globe. They have garnered awards and accolades from such industry organizations as The Special Event Show and ISES.

ROBIN SPIELBERG BIOGR APHY Robin Spielberg is one of America`s most beloved pianist/composers. With an impressive tour schedule and hundreds of thousands of recordings sold, this Steinway Artist has been winning the hearts of listeners around the world with her compelling melodies and sensitive piano technique since debuting her first recording of original solos for piano, Heal of the Hand.

Thousands of people have been both entertained and touched by Ms. Spielberg`s live concerts; she has toured more than any female composer/pianist in the past decade.

Her natural talent for making audiences immediately comfortable transforms what could easily be an ordinary evening at the concert hall into a very special concert event.

A prolific composer, Spielberg has fifteen recordings to her credit and appears on over 40 compilations around the world. Her discography includes albums of original piano solos, arrangements of American standards, original pieces for piano/ensemble, recordings for the holidays, and a CD of lullabies. Her 16th recording, a collection of Americana pieces for piano/ensemble was released in 2010.

Dreaming of Summer earned a Finalist Award from New Age Voice Magazine in June 2001 in the Best Acoustic Instrumental category and was released later in the year in Thailand, China, HongKong, Korea and Malaysia, with one of the tracks also gaining popularity with audiences from its use as a soundtrack in the Korean award-winning television drama “Winter Love Song.”

A New Kind of Love is Robin Spielberg’s 15th CD, and her first of all-original work in eight years. It is also her most personal and expressive yet. A New Kind of Love marks the artist’s return to creating the kind of music for which she is most famous: melodic soundtracks for her life journey. Exploring friendships, world beauty, the passage of time and the transitions of seasons, the CD is an intimate listening experience. The CD earned Spielberg a nomination in the NAR Lifestyle Music Awards (Best Piano Album category).

Ms. Spielberg began touring the US in 1996.

She made her Carnegie Hall debut in a sold-out performance at the Weill Recital Hall in 1997 and has performed there twice since. Other memorable performances include a guest spot on the PBS television special, The Soul of Christmas: A Celtic Music Celebration with Thomas Moore; live performances on CBS Saturday Morning, Good Morning Arizona, Life Time Live, CBS New Orleans, a private concert for the factory workers at the Steinway & Sons historic piano factory in New York, and a month-long concert tour through rural Montana in 2007.

Popular with Asian audiences, Robin has

released two CDs in Korea and is on several compilations on Asian labels. She has twice toured in South Korea making concert appearances at the renowned Seoul Arts Center and KBS Hall. She recorded a special concert for Airiang TV which aired throughout Asia.

Ms. Spielberg`s music has ranked in the top ten in its category on iTunes. Many of her pieces have served as soundtracks to documentaries and commercials both in the United States and abroad.

In the field of dance, The West Florida Youth Ballet choreographed a program of dance works based on her music, ballroom waltzes were choreographed to her piece, Walk with Me on both PBS` Great American Ballroom Challenge and BYU Ballroom Dance Team presentations.

Robin Spielberg is a Celebrity Spokesperson for the American Music Therapy Association.

Robin’s interest in music and healing grew when she witnessed first-hand, the positive effect music had on her own baby daughter (born prematurely) during her four-month stay in the neo-natal intensive care unit. A CD entitled Beautiful Dreamer was the musical result of this experience, a recording of lullabies and songs for the parent & child on solo piano. Ms. Spielberg`s work with music and healing has been documented in The New York Times and in segments on LifeTime Live and ABC News. Beautiful Dreamer was hailed

by Child Magazine as one of “The Best of 2000,” and also earned accolades in Parenting and The Washington Post. Robin donates $1 from the sale of each Beautiful Dreamer CD to music therapy research.

As spokesperson, Spielberg conducts workshops and seminars on the topic of music and healing throughout the U.S. in hospitals, schools, community centers, nursing care facilities and performing arts centers. Spielberg was the featured performer at AMTA`s national conference in Minneapolis in Fall 2003, performing for over 1,300 music therapists from around the world, and was the featured performer at the 2008 conference in St. Louis, Missouri.

She has conducted workshops and seminars for AMTA throughout the US. She served as panelist on “The Transformative Power of Music” during the Pennsylvania Presenters Conference in May 2008.

Ms. Spielberg graduated with high honors and a BFA from New York University. She currently resides in rural Pennslyvania with her husband/business partner, their eleven year old daughter and two cats.

BIOGR APHIES LYNN TREFZGER Lynn Trefzger is a ventriloquist/ comedienne with a trunk full of zany characters that have accompanied her to stages throughout the country. She was recently featured in the film, I’m No Dummy a documentary about the history and legends of Ventriloquism.

Year, Mark Nizer has changed the way people view the world. The impossible is possible, the improbable is probable.

Mark’s twenty years on stage have taken his one man show to thousands of venues around the world, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts three times.

Lynn was named the “Funniest Female Performer of the Year,” by Campus Activities Magazine, as the result of votes by thousands of college students nationwide and in 2007, American Entertainment Magazine nominated her “Funniest Female Performer of the Year!”

Creating new ways to delight and entertain his audiences is at the heart of Mark’s mission. His invention of the Laser Diablo™ merges juggling, light and technology. Since Mark is consistently working on new ideas and tricks to add to his show, it is no wonder that Performance Magazine called his show “nothing less than brilliant”. Mark Nizer has opened for George Burns, Ray Charles and Bob Hope. He has appeared on The Arsenio Hall Show, LA Law, Bob Hope and Other Young Comedians, MTV, Comic Strip Live and Carolines A&E.

Lynn’s vocal illusion talents were first brought to national audiences on TV’s popular Star Search and she has since performed with artists including Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano, Drew Carey, and Faith Hill. Her off-the-wall audience interplay is riotously funny, and her performances are tailored for both family and adult audiences. Lynn (and her many voices) has appeared on ABC, TNN, A&E and Lifetime television.

MARK NIZER Since winning first place in the International Juggling Championships, Collegiate Entertainer of the Year, and 1998 Comedy Entertainer of the

Mark was raised in Concord, Mass. He attended University of New Hampshire and San Diego State and holds a degree in Psychology. He currently lives in Free Union, VA with his wife Mary-Scott and their daughters Haley, Madison and Ruby. When Mark is not performing, look for him overhead flying his Hang Glider.

César Franck (1822-1890) BIOGR APHY The young American musician Christopher Houlihan is widely acknowledged as one of the brightest stars in the new generation of American organists, and was booked to perform from coast to coast during his debut season under professional representation.

During his senior year of college he made his orchestral debut (with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, sharing the soloist spotlight with violinist Joshua Bell) and recorded his second commercial CD (his debut CD having been recorded after his sophomore year).

He spent his junior year studying in France where he earned the “Prix de Perfectionnement” (equivalent to a university artist’s diploma in the US) from the French National Regional Conservatory in Versailles, performed widely, and served as assistant musician at the American Cathedral in Paris where he had the honor of performing for the then President and First Lady of the United States, Mr. And Mrs. George W. Bush.

He is a graduate with honors from Trinity College in Connecticut where he studied with John Rose, his organ teacher from

the age of twelve. Late in his freshman year a group of friends formed the “Houli Fans,” a club aimed mostly at gathering fellow students to attend Christopher’s organ recitals. When he performed with the Hartford Symphony during his senior year they chartered buses to take throngs of students to the orchestra hall where they rained down loud cheers from the balcony.

Christopher did his graduate degree work at The Juilliard School in New York where he studied with the Grammy Award winning organist Paul Jacobs.

During concert season 2010-2011 he was a featured performer at two regional conventions of the American Guild of Organists, made another European tour, and inaugurated the newly installed pipe organ at the Sondheim Performing Arts Center in Iowa.

During the summer of 2012 Christopher Houlihan will perform the six organ symphonies of Louis Vierne in marathon sessions in six major north American cities—New York, Chicago, Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles and Montreal.

Performances are Friday, October 7 and Saturday October 8, 2011, at 8 p.m. each evening. This concert is their first performance of the season and has become a favorite of many, featuring Wisconsin Lutheran College’s choral ensembles and band. The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band has a membership of about 50 student musicians and is continually growing. The Wisconsin Lutheran Choir is a 60 voice mixed ensemble, and the Chamber Choir is a 24 voice mixed ensemble made up of select members of the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir.

At age 15 Christopher won the First Prize in the Albert Schweitzer National Organ Competition. The Wisconsin Lutheran College Music Department presents the Winter Band Concert on Friday, December 9, 2011, at 8 p.m. The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band, under the direction of Professor Terry Treuden, is an ensemble that performs the finest of the wind band literature and presents concerts on the campus and tours regionally and nationally. The membership in this organization is through a seating audition. The band meets five hours each week while exploring a wide variety of band compositions and arrangements.
