BIOGR APHIES Maurice Jacox (Lead vocal) is the winner of Minnesota Music Academy Jazz Award; Twin City Pages Best Male Vocalist; and the Blues Society Best Blues Artist. He is a former cast member of Dudley Riggs Brave New Workshop, and has acted in productions and played at the Guthrie, Southern and Children’s theaters. Original member of Willie and the Bees, the Butane Soul Review and Soul Tight Committee. He has worked with Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John and the Funk Brothers to name just a few.

Jimmy Hamilton (Piano) brings a wealth of experience in the area of Nat Cole’s piano style. Jimmy met Mr. Cole in the early 1960’s and has made a career out of playing the piano and using styles, including Nat Cole’s, in his own playing.

Mr. Hamilton leads his own group and works regularly in the top recognized venues in the Minneapolis area.

Jordan Carlson (Percussion / Drums) has a degree in drum performance from the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul and is a full-time musician and educator. He has played all across the country and is well versed in virtually every style of jazz and American pop music.

Jason Goldsmith (Saxophones) has been working in and around the Milwaukee area for many years and has collaborated with some of the area’s premier jazz, pop, rock, and rhythm and blues musicians. He is regularly in demand for touring shows and received his degree at UW –Whitewater, where he received a Performance degree.

Bob Pontious (Keyboardist/Arranger) has worked in the Twin Cities area for many years playing in various nightclubs, ballrooms, festivals and fairs with different groups and show bands. Bob Keith Boyles (Acoustic Bassist) is a Twin is director of contemporary musicat Cities musician with 30 years experience. The Unforgettable Strings: Members include Milwaukee’s very own Ellen Scott, Linda Binder, Amanda Koch and Roza Borisova. This quartet plays with Straighten Up and Fly Right! when it is traveling through the Milwaukee and Eastern Wisconsin area.

SONG LIST STRAIGHTEN UP AND FLY RIGHT (Nat King Cole & Irving Mills) Cole’s greatest composition, and first hit record for Capitol records is a cute story about a buzzard and a monkey that underscores a serious time in US history. Ultimately the two figure out they must get along.The catchphrase in the title worked to inspire discipline and honor to the members of the military.

The song was most likely inspired from one of Nat’s father’s sermons.

PRELUDE IN C# MINOR (Rachmaninoff ) Nat King Cole’s and his trio’s accessible interpretation of the Rachmaninoff classic.

Cole studied piano from the age of 12 and played classical pieces from Bach to Rachmaninoff.

SWEET LORRAINE (Cliff Burwell & Mitchell Parish) This song helped establish Nat Cole as a serious singer. He had previously been known primarily as a jazz pianist.

IT’S ONLY A PAPER MOON (E.Y. Harburg, Harold Arlen, & Billy Rose) This number employs one of the most unique introductions ever written.

(GET YOUR KICKS ON) ROUTE 66 (Bob Troup) One of Cole’s personal favorites is based on the traditional 12 bar blues.

MONA LISA (Jay Livingston & Ray Evans) Although Cole didn’t particularly care for the tune when he first heard it, he received praise from his idols, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn for this performance. The American public agreed.

CALYPSO BLUES (Don George & Nathaniel Cole) This selection highlights Cole’s newfound addition to the trio: percussionist Jack Costanzo.

ORANGE COLORED SKY (Milton Delugg & Willie Stein) One of the first songs to be launched from television, this song teamed Cole with bandleader Stan Kenton.

NATURE BOY (Eden Ahbez) Hauntingly beautiful lyrics tell the story of a boy that has discovered the meaning of life.

TOO YOUNG (S. Lippman & S. Dee) WALKIN’ MY BABY BACK HOME (Roy Turk & Fred E. Ahlert) UNFORGETTABLE (Irving Gordon) These three songs were recorded by Cole during a couple of different recording sessions, somewith full orchestration and some without.

INTERMISSION THAT AIN’T RIGHT (Nat King Cole & Irving Mills) One of Cole’s greatest compositions, this song was recorded in 1941. It features the traditional blues, yet contains certain chord harmony that would later be used by jazz musicians.

OH, MARY, DON’T YOU WEEP (Nat King Cole & G. Jenkins) This song reaches back to one of Cole’s early influences: Gospel music.

ANSWER ME MY LOVE (Gerhad Winkler, Carl Sigman & Fred Rauch) This love ballad that teams Cole with orchestrator Nelson Riddle.

SEND FOR ME (Ollie Jones) A challenge for Nat King Cole in that he still intended to make tasteful music from a piece geared for a rhythm and blues market.

SOMETHING MAKES ME WANT TO DANCE WITH YOU (C. Romoff & D. Meehan) This number was recorded during the famed Billy May (orchestrator) sessions.

RAMBLIN’ ROSE (Joe Sherman & Noel Sherman) Recorded June 19, 1962, this famous upbeat ballad with a Country-Western flavor was a smash hit.

BIOGR APHY Daniel Sullivan, a musician with the rare distinction of having earned both the Artist Diploma and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The Juilliard School, practices a wide-ranging career as a performer and teacher.

In 2008 Raven Compact Discs released his recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations. American Record Guide responded by writing that “if you like the Goldberg’s enough to buy more than one recording, this one should be on your must-have list.” Performing the Goldberg’s as well as other solo concerts has taken Mr. Sullivan to cities all over the United States.

As an Oundle recital award-winner, he has performed in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Hexham, England. He has been a featured soloist at New York City’s Basically Bach Festival, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and the White Mountain Musical Arts Annual Bach Festival in New Hampshire. Mr. Sullivan’s skills and sensitive performances have earned him first and second prizes in the Miami International, San Marino, Gruenstein Memorial, Arthur Poister, Albert Schweitzer, Cleveland-AGO, and Twin Cities-AGO organ competitions.

In addition to playing solo concerts, he performs collaboratively with pianist Jason Cutmore as the New York Piano-Organ Duo and with organist Isabelle Demers as the Sullivan-Demers Two-Organ Duo. The NY Piano-Organ Duo plays standard works for this special combination of instruments in addition to their own transcriptions of other music and new works by living composers. Mr. Sullivan and Mr. Cutmore arranged Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite” for piano-organ duet.

They have concertized together in Canada and the United States, playing at such well-known venues as Canada’s Elora Festival, Cincinnati’s Hyde Park United Methodist Church, and Finney Chapel at Oberlin College. Mr. Sullivan’s work with Isabelle Demers focuses on transcribing music for performance on two organs played at the same time.

They have arranged music from Bach’s Wachet Auf Cantata, Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Ballet, Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, and Wagner’s Tannhäuser.

In 2008 the Jacksonville AGO chapter invited them to perform for their “Organ Spectacular” celebration.

Mr. Sullivan’s doctoral document, “J. S. Bach and Permutational Design,” was one of two that won the Richard F. French Doctoral Prize at Juilliard in 2010. This study uncovers secretive forms of hidden organization in the keyboard music of J. S. Bach. Daniel pursued his academic interest in music early on by completing a theory major at Oberlin Conservatory, with a special emphasis on Schenkerian analysis. Mr. Sullivan earned his Mus.B. from Oberlin Conservatory, Mus.M. from Yale University, and both the Artist Diploma and Doctor of Musical Arts from The Juilliard School. All three schools heavily subsidized his education with generous grants. His teachers have included Paul Jacobs, Thomas Murray, and Haskell Thomson in performance, and Allen Cadwallader, Daniel Harrison, Philip Lasser, and Carl Schachter in music theory.

In 2008-2009, Mr. Sullivan was appointed to the faculty of Juilliard to design and teach an organ literature class. He now resides in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where he teaches piano at Immanuel Lutheran High School and College, and general music at Messiah Lutheran School. He is one of several organists at Messiah Lutheran Church.

T H E S H O E N B R U N N PA L AC E O R C H E S T R A Don’t get stressed – get STRAUSSed The Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra Vienna is a renowned and internationally acclaimed Viennese chamber orchestra that translates the glamorous era of imperial Vienna into music. In addition to a high level of musical quality, this orchestra sets itself apart by interpreting music with a unified sound, a delightful stage presence and impeccable appearance. The orchestra performs regularly at the Orangery of Schoenbrunn Palace. However, the rest of the world has the opportunity of enjoying the orchestra’s enchanting performance as well. On selected occasions, the Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra Vienna now performs internationally, both in Europe and overseas. During previous concert tours, the orchestra was enthusiastically received in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Japan, Italy, Romania, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, China, Switzerland, Croatia. Russia and Brasil.

Repertoire The orchestra’s repertoire focuses on the works of W.A. Mozart, the Strauss family and other composers of that era. The Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra attaches great importance to Viennese-style interpretation of the pieces it plays. The orchestra excels in interpreting the works of classical Viennese composers and Viennese music with a subtle and individual touch, always adding that “Viennese” note. The orchestra has a longstanding tradition of working with operetta singers and ballet dancers.

C O N D U C TO R Russell McGregor (Violin) was born in Oxford, England but grew up in Melbourne, Australia where, at the age of seven, he began to play the violin and in 1982 received his Diploma of Arts in Music at the Victorian College of the Arts. In 1992 Russell moved to Vienna, Austria and was a member of the Wiener Concertverein, Camerata Salzburg and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. From 1994 to 1996 he was the Concertmaster at the Vienna Chamber Opera, and since 1997 he has been Concertmaster and Conductor with the Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra.

Russell has an intensive chamber-music career and performs in Bulgaria, Indonesia, Canada, Japan, England and Italy..... As an extremely successful Stehgeiger (Violin Player in the style of Johann Strauss) he has now established a wonderful rapport with the Schoenbrunn Palace Orchestra and they appear regularly not only in Austria but throughout the whole world! He not only impresses with his violin virtuosity but he also charms the audiences as he takes them on a musical journey through the magical music of the Strauss dynasty.

Russell McGregor is the most well-known (and most famous) Stehgeiger in Vienna with his individual Strauss interpretation which is derived from the style of Mozart, which he has developed performing with the Camerata Salzburg.

Therefore, it is extremely easy to see how his Johann Strauss interpretation can at times mesmerize the audience with a somewhat floating feeling!

Russell McGregor has performed concerts in the Golden Hall of the famous Musikverein in Vienna and has also performed with Luciano Pavarotti, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Dame Kiri Tekanawa and Ildiko Raimondi. A special highlight for Russell in 2002 was to perform a Strauss concert in the famous opera house in Sydney, Australia. BIOGR APHY Rick Hubbard celebrates more than a decade of providing positive family entertainment throughout the United States, and every moment has been KAZOOBIE! Rick invented the word, “kazoobie,” to describe his performance.

It means “exceptional, fun, and involving everyone.” Audience involvement is the key, and no entertainer in America gets more audience members into the show than Rick Hubbard.

Rick Hubbard has performed at festivals and concerts throughout the United States including the Seattle International Children’s Festival and the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC (where he sold out five shows). He has performed at Busch Gardens (Tampa), Sea World, Tweetsie Railroad, and Disney World. Recently the American Academy of Children’s Entertainers nominated Rick as America’s Best Variety Entertainer.

A class clown from the beginning, Rick found an outlet for performing in a guitar given to him by his grandmother when he was eleven. His first public performance was in a school play in the seventh grade, singing “If I Had A Hammer.” As a teenager, Rick played in rock bands, jazz bands, and folk groups around his hometown of Laurinburg, NC. Accepted at Wake Forest University, Rick performed in the opening concert and later played bass as part of the back-up band for the legendary Chuck Berry. After college, Rick joined a group and toured the USA, Jamaica, and Saudi Arabia. In 1986, Rick began to perform for kids in the Atlanta area, and soon family entertainment was his career.

Rick’s “Kazoo Band” shows get every member of the audience involved. Each person receives a free kazoo and performs with Rick in the grand finale. Leading up to this kazoobie event, Rick will perform a number of his popular original songs along with “Kids Appearing On Stage” or “KAOS” as Rick calls it. While Rick performs on guitar, banjo, steel drum, or another exotic instrument, kids participate on stage -- dancing, singing, shaking maracas, or playing inflatable guitars. Every song is an opportunity for kids to participate. Every kid gets a chance to be on stage. Even some grown-ups get to be on stage with Rick. It’s a fun and positive experience for the whole family -- it’s KAZOOBIE!

The Wisconsin Lutheran College Concert Band has a membership of about 50 student musicians and is continually growing. Born in Pleven, Bulgaria in 1985, Bella Hristova began violin studies at the age of six. She has appeared as soloist with symphony orchestras in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Indiana. During the 2009-10 season, Ms. Hristova performed Bach’s Concerto for Three Violins with the celebrated violinists Cho-Liang Lin and Kyoko Takezawa as guest artist with the New York String Orchestra. “Hristova plays with passion from the very first note ... Every sound she draws from her 1655 Amati is superb. Join Ichabod Crane, Brom Bones, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel, the residents of Tarry Town, and oh yes, the Headless Horseman, in the story made famous by the legend. This classic is faithful to the original story written by Washington Irving in 1819 and will thrill and perhaps chill (but not too scary for young children) your family.

Lady Windermere’s Fan was Oscar Wilde’s first comedy and first great stage success. With an uneasy mixture of Christian morality and glittering wit, Lady Windermere’s Fan satirizes the superficiality and hypocrisy of Victorian England.

Gossip, intrigue, misunderstandings and deception whirl their way through London’s parlors and ballrooms until, in the end, true honor is found in one whom society considered the least honorable. This new musical adaptation is faithful to the play’s original story line, with script and lyrics that keep Wilde’s witty repartee intact. The Wisconsin Lutheran College Theatre Department will present this musical adaptation in the Raabe Theatre on Thursday, November 5 through Saturday, November 13, 2010.

On Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at 7:30 p.m., experience soulful expression, instrumental virtuosity, and playful banter, all the hallmarks of an Intersection event.
