D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S The Comedy of Errors best characterizes Shakespeare’s fascination with mistaken identity. Shakespeare often employs disguises and gender flip-flops as one of many devices to craft his stories but in The Comedy of Errors this technique is the spine of the play, the center where the characters, setting, and story originate. We can only speculate about Shakespeare’s attraction to mistaken identity but underneath every moment of hilarity in The Comedy of Errors is a person yearning for something or someone. In every instance where a character aches, Shakespeare concocts a game or comedic gag that eases the pain. He blends tragic situations with comedic resolutions. Charlie Chaplin said of Shakespeare, “[His] Laughter is the tonic, the relief, the surcease for pain.” Like many only children, I longed for a sibling so I invented one by telling people that I had an older brother in college. He became real and changed my identity. Oh, the inexplicable joy I felt because I had a brother! Years later, I told my directing teacher of my childhood charade; he responded by giving me a copy of The Comedy of Errors commenting,“I think someone else has played your game, too.” With each page, I quickly identified with two brothers searching for each other and the hilarity of deception became all too familiar. As each character failed to recognize one another, I smiled and thought of “my brother” and wondered if he would be able to recognize me after all of these years. This season, we present Romeo and Juliet in repertory with The Comedy of Errors, our thirty-first production of Shakespeare’s work. The company will be touring to 32 cities and towns in 20 states across the country. While on tour, we present master classes, student matinees and one-hour, performance-based workshops of Shakespeare for younger audiences. Our Literacy Through Theater program, a weeklong artistic residency, is the centerpiece of our education program. Teaching artists involve students in all aspects of the plays being presented on our tour. They explore writing, communications, poetry, character development and other facets of theater before seeing the production and spending the day with our actors. The Acting Company is a TONY Honoree for Excellence in Theater and has also won the Obie Award, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award, Citibank’s Excellence in Education Award and two Audelco Awards.

Ray Chapman returns for his second Acting Company/Guthrie Theater season. Meaghan was the stage management intern for The Acting Company’s Henry V. Graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage Management. Joe Dowling (Director, Guthrie Theater) has directed more than 35 productions at the Guthrie since 1995, including landmark productions of Shakespeare, Chekhov, Stoppard and Friel. Under Dowling’s leadership, the Guthrie has enjoyed tremendous growth, including the 2006 opening of a new Guthrie on banks of the Mississippi River. Dowling has been artistic director of Ireland’s Abbey Theatre and managing/artistic director of Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre. His American work includes numerous productions in New York and Washington, D.C.
