The upcoming major anniversaries for the two musical giants of French Impressionism -- Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) serve to remind us that in recent years we’ve given short shrift to the glorious music of France, the nation with whom America has long had a difficult but profound friendship. So join us as we celebrate French music in its many forms: from profound masterworks like Debussy’s LA MER and Bizet’s Symphony in C, to the gentle strains of Gabriel Faure, to the sultry fire of the Carmen Fantasy and Ravel’s BOLERO! We’ll even throw in Offenbach’s Can-Can for good measure.
2011-2012 Season
We’re thrilled to present a great symphonic concert at the new and very comfortable Oconomowoc Arts Center and to renew our relationship with the equally enjoyable Sharon Lynne Wilson Center in Brookfield. There will also be three very special concerts at our historic home of Shattuck Auditorium at Carroll University in downtown Waukesha, including another Sundayafternoon Salute to Our Veterans -- this year, appropriately, culminating with Gershwin’s AN AMERICAN IN PARIS -- and that great Waukesha Christmas tradition, our annual Holiday Pops concert with many of our talented high school singers in early December. The values enshrined in these programs -tradition, diversity, and excellence -- well define The Wisconsin Philharmonic, the first-class orchestra serving Waukesha County for seven decades. Join us as we embark on another magnificent journey of this beloved Waukesha treasure. Alexander Platt Music Director The Wisconsin Philharmonic

What could be more beautiful than Christmas in the Paris cafes and Notre Dame? Joined as usual by some of our favorite high school choirs throughout the county, The Philharmonic takes you there in style -- from the majesty of Faure’s Sanctus, Gounod’s Messe de Sainte-Cecile and Panis Angelicus, to the romp of Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Bizet’s Children’s Games and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (of FANTASIA fame), to the solace of Debussy’s Clair de lune. Join us for one of Waukesha County’s most elegant and uplifting Holiday traditions!
We’ll warm up a Wisconsin February with a delectable bouquet of French musical gems -- from the noble tragedy of Faure’s Pelleas and Melisande, with its famous solos for flute and harp, to the Gypsy fire of Philharmonic favorite Maria Bachmann, as she celebrates the solo genius of the great French-Spanish violin virtuoso of the Romantic era, Pablo de Sarasate, with his Zigeunerweisen and Carmen Fantasy. Pivoting from his immortal music for Carmen, we round out the afternoon with the sunny brilliance of Georges Bizet’s equally immortal Symphony in C.

Une Grande Finale: from France to Spain Jose Franch Ballester, clarinet
Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 3pm Shattuck Auditorium, Carroll University 218 North East Avenue, Waukesha The brilliant and dashing young Spaniard Jose Franch Ballester, clarinetist with The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, helps The Philharmonic finish up the season in grand style, celebrating the ancient and beautiful musical links between France, America and Spain. Along with his matchless renditions of Debussy’s Rhapsody and the jazzy Clarinet Concerto of Aaron Copland, we’ll close the season with the so-called “Spanish Symphony” of the Basque genius Maurice Ravel: his Alaborda del Gracioso, “Habanera” from his Rhapsodie Espagnole, the tender Pavane for a Dead Infanta, and of course -- the Bolero!!! Join us for a truly grande finale.
