THE BR A MBLETT MEMORIAL CHA MBER SERIES The Bramblett Memorial Chamber Series was created in 1998 to honor the memory of our dear friend and colleague Jerry Earl Bramblett who served on the music department faculty from 1973-1994, the year he passed away. He was a vital force in the Music Department, not only throughout his many performances, but also in the musical excellence he expected from this students and from the department in general. As a solo pianist and chamber music collaborator, he presented over 300 recitals on campus, as well as throughout Wisconsin and elsewhere in the U.S. A dedicated teacher, he was greatly respected by his students. To those of us who knew and heard Jerry perform, it was when he was performing in the chamber music setting that his true genius as an artist was realized. With Jerry’s dedication and artistry as our inspiration, the series seeks to actively promote and bring high-level chamber music to the campus to enrich the cultural environment of the University and the community. Since 2006, the MGQ has collaborated with Flamenco dancer Colette Illarde, developing two different productions with music by the great Spanish composers Joaquin Rodrigo and Enrique Granados. This dynamic and wide ranging synthesis features music arranged by the MGQ, while Ms. Illarde’s choreography reflects the extraordinary vitality of Spanish culture and includes Spanish regional and folk dancing, classical ballet and flamenco. The Minneapolis Guitar Quartet’s concerto appearances include the Austin Symphony, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony, among others. In recital, the MGQ has performed in more than 30 states in such cities as Seattle, Chicago, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Omaha, and Boston. Other highlights include Princeton University, the Il Encuentro Internacional de Guitarra at the National Arts Center in Mexico City, the Omni Foundation Dynamite Guitar series in

The MGQ has been heard on the nationally syndicated Saint Paul Sunday, and on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. From its first four CDs on the Albany and GSP labels, the group has garnered unanimous international critical acclaim. “With (Over Land and Sea),” said Soundboard Magazine, “the MGQ demonstrates that it is one of the major guitar ensembles in the world.” Highlights from the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet’s 2008-2011 seasons included concerts and masterclasses in 15 states, concerto performances with the Orchestra of Indian Hill (MA), and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra (Madison) and concerts with Flamenco dancer Colette Illarde in five states. In 2009, the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet toured to Oregon and Alaska and a busy 2010 included performances for the Round Top (TX) International Guitar Festival and the Friends of Chamber Music of Stockton, CA.

The untimely death of John Denver in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John’s ardent fans demanding that his music survive. CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie: “Take Me Home: the John Denver Story,” in which Jim Curry’s voice was selected as the voice of John Denver. J I M C U R R Y ’ S T R I B U T E TO T H E M U S I C O F J O H N D E N V E R Jim Curry began his music career writing and performing the opening song, “The Time of Your Life” for his senior play. The song was then voted to be the 1975 class song and Jim was awarded a Rotary Scholarship to study music in college. Even at this early stage in his life Jim’s natural voice resembled that of singer/songwriter John Denver. Embracing the similarities, Jim continued to sing and specialize in the songs of John Denver, sharing John’s positive messages of love, humanity and environmental awareness. The untimely death of John Denver’s in 1997 was a tragedy that was felt the world over. Such a void in the musical world left John’s ardent fans demanding that his music survive. CBS television responded by producing a made for TV movie: “Take Me Home, the John Denver Story” in which Jim landed an off-camera role singing as the voice of John Denver. This experience inspired Jim to produce full–length John Denver tribute concerts. He’s not your usual “Vegas style” impersonator. In fact, he is not an impersonator at all. Jim sings, in his own natural voice, a tribute to the music in a way that has to be seen and heard to understand the pure honesty of his amazing performance. His looks and his voice are simply a pleasant coincidence that captures the true essence of John Denver’s music. Curry’s heartfelt delivery rolls out into the crowd as multi-platinum hits like “Rocky Mountain High,”“Annie’s Song” and “Calypso” fill the room. To compliment Jim’s performance visually, a multi-media PowerPoint of slides and video are played in sync with each song. Some of the video is the original video John Denver used in his own shows. Jim believes that John Denver’s words still ring true in these difficult times of war and environmental crisis. John Denver grew rapidly into a mega celebrity when the world was looking for some hope in the late 60’s and his lyrics in songs like, “Take
me Home Country Roads” gave America a new lift abroad as well as at home. People all over the world found pride in the natural wonders of the earth and love for John’s message of caring for our planet and each other. Jim delivers these songs in the same spirit, with the same heartfelt care and desire to make a difference. As the concerns of global warming and other environmental issues reach today’s youth, Curry sees a growing number of younger listeners. Curry says, “These songs blend the images of our natural earth with a love for each other as people. The care you give to someone you love is the best care. Making that connection to our earth and to each other is the goal.” Jim Curry has created the ultimate tribute experience and has emerged as the top performer of John Denver’s music today. He often performs with John Denver’s former band members. Curry’s tribute is the first and only full-length John Denver tribute in a Las Vegas Casino and is a sell-out favorite at the Silverton time after time. Curry has taken his show on the road to Performing Arts Centers and Casinos in the US and Canada and out to sea as one of the most popular shows on the Holland America Cruise Line. On October 2007, the 10th anniversary of John’s passing, Jim Curry brought a landmark concert to the stage in Aspen Colorado. It included many of John Denver’s former band members, some of them for the first time in a tribute show. When John Denver wanted to add a full orchestra to his live shows and recordings, he teamed up with Grammy Award winning arranger, composer and conductor Lee Holdridge. Lee’s symphony arrangements, along with John’s songs became the trademark sound of many of John’s hits. Now, Jim Curry and Lee Holdridge have brought the rebirth of the timeless songs of America’s troubadour back as a full-length live concert of John Denver’s greatest works, as well as one of his last songs written. Based on one audience suggestion (a title for a play that has yet to be written) The Improvised Shakespeare Co. creates a fully improvised play in Elizabethan style. Each of the players has brushed up on his “thee’s” and “thou’s” to bring you an evening of off-the-cuff comedy using the language and themes of William Shakespeare. Any hour could be filled with power struggles, star-crossed lovers, sprites, kings, queens, princesses, sword-play, rhyming couplets, asides, insults, persons in disguise and all that we’ve come to expect from the pen of the Great Bard. The night could reveal a tragedy, comedy, or history. Nothing is planned-out, rehearsed, or written. Each play is completely improvised, so each play is entirely new! BIOGR APHIES Blaine Swen Blaine Swen is the creator and director of The Improvised Shakesepare Company. He comes from California where he performed with ComedySportz, Ultimate Improv, and iO West. Currently, he can be seen performing at iO Chicago with The DelTones and The Armando Diaz Experience. His other iO credits include the house team Bullet Lounge and the one-man improvised musical, BASH! He enjoys touring with the iO Road Show and The Second City’s BizCo. He has performed in Chicago with The Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Pegasus Players Theatre, and The Second City Education Company. The Chicago Reader recently named him 2010’s “Best Improviser in Chicago.”
Hans Holsen Hans Holsen toured the U.S.A. with The Second City National Touring Company for two years, and toured the Netherlands with Boom Chicago for two years as well, but was mainly tethered to Boom’s main stage in Amsterdam. He currently performs with Second City’s Improv All-Stars at the Second City’s Up Comedy Club. At iO, he also performs with Ringo Starr. At The Annoyance, he performs with FishNutz and in the Holy F*** Comedy Hour. At the Apollo Theater Hans plays as a member of the worldwide musical improv concern Baby Wants Candy. Joey Bland Joey Bland moved to Chicago from Virginia, where he attended the College of William and Mary. Outside The Improvised Shakespeare Company, he has performed with ComedySportz, the iO Theater, and The Second City. For two years, Joey traveled the world with The Second City Touring Company, and in 2009, he played the title role in The Second City’s hit, original musical, Rod Blagojevich, Superstar. Joey is a two-time Jeopardy champion. Andy Carey Andy Carey performed, toured, and taught for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Idaho Shakespeare Festival, and the Boise Contemporary Theater after receiving his B.F.A. from the University of Idaho. Since moving to Chicago he has trained with the iO Theater, The Second City Conservatory
and the Annoyance. In addition to The Improvised Shakespeare Company, Andy is a member of Baby Wants Candy (Chicago), Willie Nelson Slept Here (iO Theater) and A Crew of Patches theater company. Much love to his wife Christy and son Keagan. Brendan Dowling Brendan Dowling is a Massachusetts native and a graduate of the College of William and Mary. In Chicago, he has toured with The Second City’s National Touring Company and has been a member of ComedySportz. He also performed in The Second City Denver’s inaugural production of Red Scare, as well as writing and performing The Second City Denver’s How I Lost My Denverginity. Brendan can also be seen creating improvised musicals with Baby Wants Candy. He would like to thank his family for being so great.
S H OW H I S TO R Y In 2005, Blaine Swen founded The Improvised Shakespeare Co. in Chicago. After a successful fall run on the Donny’s Skybox stage at The Second City the show was taken, at the request of Charna Halpern, to IO Chicago. It has consistently played to sold out houses for the last 3 years now, The Improvised Shakespeare Co. has found itself on the road, including a trip to the Piccolo Spoleto Fringe Festival in Charleston SC, where The ISC was reviewed as one of the top shows in the festival! The group also frequents New York City performing limited engagements Off-Broadway at the Barrow Street Theatre where stars from SNL, Mad TV, and The Office have been seen watching the show in amazement. In July, 2009, The Improvised Shakespeare Co. premiered in Canada at the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival (also reviewed as one of the top shows to see), playing to standing room only houses and they were also part of the Just For Laughs TV broadcast playing in front of an audience of 2500 people. In September ’09, The Improvised Shakespeare Co. played to standing room only houses at Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival.
