BR AMBLETT MEMORIAL CHAMBER SERIES The Bramblett Memorial Chamber Series was created in 1998 to honor the memory of our dear friend and colleague Jerry Earl Bramblett who served on the music department faculty from 1973-1994, the year he passed away. He was a vital force in the Music Department, not only throughout his many performances, but also in the musical excellence he expected from this students and from the department in general. As a solo pianist and chamber music collaborator, he presented over 300 recitals on campus, as well as throughout Wisconsin and elsewhere in the U.S. A dedicated teacher, he was greatly respected by his students. To those of us who knew and heard Jerry perform, it was when he was performing in the chamber music setting that his true genius as an artist was realized. With Jerry’s dedication and artistry as our inspiration, the series seeks to actively promote and bring high-level chamber music to the campus to enrich the cultural environment of the University and the community. Former chancellor Greenhill wrote: “He was a vigorous performer, teacher and scholar whose energies and musicianship provided a model of professionalism for his students.”

ALPIN HONG BIOGR APHY Whirlwind American tours and performances across the globe have earned pianist Alpin Hong the reputation as a modern-day Pied Piper. His combination of stunning technique, emotional range, and rare humor continues to bring audiences young and old to their feet. The New York Times lauded his “crystalline energy . . . clear and persuasive ideas . . . and remarkable breadth of coloration” and called him “a pianistic firebrand” in a review of his standing-roomonly New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.
Hong’s uniquely humorous and visionary approach to arts education has resulted in artistic residencies from coast-to-coast. In recognition of the pianist’s gift for communicating his passion for music to audiences of all ages, The McGraw-Hill Companies honored him with the Robert Sherman Award for Music Education and Community Outreach. His tireless pursuit to find, inspire, and collaborate with talents in every community results in unforgettable presentations that both expand worlds and hit close to home.
Rooted in extensive classical training and a background in skateboarding, snowboarding, martial arts, and videogames, Hong is a creative force unmatched in his youthful vivacity and boundless energy. His astonishing ability to connect with people of all ages, experiences, and backgrounds distinguishes him and shapes his evolving performance style. The Ocala Star-Banner has called Hong “Classical for the iPod generation.”
Alpin Hong is a native of Michigan and made his orchestral debut with the Kalamazoo Symphony at the age of ten. He moved to Los Angeles soon after and garnered competition prizes at a young age, winning the 1989 Stravinsky Piano Competition, the 1993 SYMF Competition, and the 1994 Los Angeles Spotlight Awards Competition. He also won the Concert Artists Guild Competition in 2001. His teachers include Mark Richman and Emilio del Rosario. He completed his master’s degree as a student of Jerome Lowenthal at The Juilliard School.

SYNOPSIS The Piano Men is a musical celebration of the 1970’s- year by year, hit by hit- from the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. Dove Award nominee and Canadian Juno Award nominee, recording artist Jim Witter and his band lead an expertly crafted tour of an entire decade that begins with “Your Song” and winds us along on a musical time machine, saluting two of the century’s most popular contemporary songwriters. Utilizing rear-screen projection, we return to the newspaper headlines, the automobiles, the people, the events, the toys and even the TV shows that shaped a decade. Along the way, the sounds of “My Life”,“Candle in the Wind”, “Rocket Man”,“Just the Way You Are”, and many more classic hits create an evening that’s just too much fun to let it end. By the time you hit 1979, you’re begging these musicians to just move back to 1970 and start all over again. With Witter at the grand piano and his sizzling musicians on keyboards, guitar, bass, flute, sax and drums, the music is not an attempt to “recreate” or “mimic” the evening’s long list of familiar hits.
Instead, Witter unleashes his golden tenor on hit after hit to recreate fullyformed mental and emotional return visits to specific landmarks in a pop culture timeline. If you can remember where you were when Elvis may have died, this show’s for you. If you can smell the interior of your 1973 VW Beetle, you’ll recognize every song. If you watch re-runs of Gilligan’s Island or Green Acres, you’ll find yourself singing along. And if you still have your bell-bottom jeans and Puma running shoes, then you probably need more help than Witter can provide… In 2004, Jim Witter entered the company of such notables as Steven Curtis Chapman, CeCe Winans, Sandi Patty and others when he was nominated for the Dove Award’s Inspirational Album of the Year for his recording “Forgiveness”. Now splitting time between Toronto and Nashville, Witter is a devoted husband and father - and an artist who truly does justice to the two giants known as “The Piano Men.”
BIOGR APY Jim Witter has been entertaining for over 20 years… Whether it is his country music, contemporary Christian, or the music of Billy Joel and Elton John, Jim’s versatility as an artist has allowed him the opportunity to reach out and share his music and his infectious personality with audiences of all ages across Canada and the United States. His unique approach and comfortable rapport makes each member of his audience feel as though they are a part of a private concert in the comfort of their own living room. This, along with his rich, powerful voice 8 Young Auditorium
and ease of manner at the piano, make him a favorite with theatre goers everywhere. It all started at a very early age, as Jim began performing in the comfort of his own living room. His Mother would play piano, and Jim would belt out the hits, everything from the Beatle’s to Broadway musicals. Not bad for a four year old! All through his school years, Jim knew that he was destined to have a career in the music business. “I never really thought of doing anything else”, he says, “and neither did my parents because they always encouraged me to follow my dream”.
B I O G R A P H Y ( c o n t .) And follow it he did. Jim paid his dues, playing in the clubs and bars around Southern Ontario for years. He would write songs and record demos during the day, and play in the clubs at night to pay the bills. Jim met his wife Rebecca in 1985. Together, they worked tirelessly to promote Jim’s talent and music in hopes that one day their efforts would be recognized. Finally in 1990, one of Jim’s demos came to the attention of a Sony Music Canada executive, which really got Jim’s recording career rolling. A record deal with a smaller independent label in Canada, soon gave way to a multi-record deal with Curb Records of Nashville, home of Tim McGraw, Leanne Rimes and Wynonna Judd. From his first self titled record, to “All My Life” and “Forgiveness”, Jim has had 10 top ten radio hits in Canada, 7 hit videos on CMT, and impressive chart action in the U.S. on Billboard and R&R. Jim’s music and songwriting have been recognized on both sides of the border, earning him multiple awards and nominations from the Canadian Country Music Association, the Juno Awards, and most recently the Dove Awards in Nashville, where Jim’s album “Forgiveness” was nominated for Inspirational Album of the year. “Songwriting has always been a real love of mine”, says Jim. “I feel very fortunate to have been able to work with so many incredible song-writers over the past years, like Steve Wariner for instance. Not only have the collaborations produced songs that I am very proud of, but I have gained an invaluable education and created lifelong friendships along the way.” A few years ago, Jim came up with the concept for the show “The Piano Men”; a musical journey through the 70’s featuring the songs of Billy Joel and Elton John. “I was always a big fan of acoustic music-especially the folk of the ‘70s: James Taylor, Harry Chapin,” he reveals, “but my real mentors were Billy Joel and Elton
John.” This multi-media rock musical has turned out to be a hit, receiving rave reviews from music critics all across North America. There are even plans to take the show overseas to London and Japan in the near future. Jim still lives in Southern Ontario with his wife, Rebecca, and their four children, James, Roslyn, Ryan and Luke. A devoted family man, Jim is also very active in his community, supporting numerous charities and organizations, especially those which benefit children and their families. “All I’ve ever wanted from this business is to be able to support my family and to make people feel a little better when they hear my music. To help them forget about their troubles for a while and enjoy the moment”, he concludes. “If I can continue doing this 5, 10, 15 years down the road, I’ll be perfectly happy.”
