Design Brief
The Breathe of Tide Eco-learning Neighbourhood Center
The Community Cultural Center As the project is Community Cultural Center (CCC), we are required to design three blocks of buildings; main gathering area (Multipurpose Hall or any similar function) as the main building block with its common area ( cafe, services, circulation, etc), and one recommended supporting block according to the result of site context analysis. At least 40% of the built area should be allocated for main gathering area and common area, where as the rest are chosen supporting facilities. The three blocks can be designed to attach or link each other or seperated. To plan and design those three blocks within the site, site layout planning needs to be carried out.

Site Analysis The Breathe of Tide Eco-learning Neighbourhood Center
Tanjung Api Village, Kuantan March 2017 Tanjung Api Village was a typical Malay village where located beside the Kuantan River. The population of the Tanjung Api Village is mostly malay. The first generation of the villagers are mostly retired fishermen who own their fishing boat around the jetty. However, most of the second generation study and work in the city. Although the second generation are not the fishermen anymore, they still choose to live in Tanjung Api Village due to the comfortable and harmony environment. Several of the new houses had started to replaced the traditional vernicular house by the second generation. The community of the village is quite mature where there have some instituitional buildings, religous buildings and also the governmental buildings. There are two different proposed site which are the site A and site B. The site A is located near to the mosque and the esplanade, around 2.9 acre. Wheras, the Site B is situated near the Tanjung Api Village and a small stream, around 2.8 acre. And also there are some to be demolished houses located at the center of the Site B.

Low tide after geographical changes The geographical changes had made the water level rising and cause the marine litter stacking around the stream which affect the ecology environment of the mangrove forest. 09
High tide before geographical changes During the high tide the site would be flooded and the water level of the flood is approximately 1.3 meter.
High tide after geographical changes During the high tide the water level of the flood decrease till 1 meter, but it cause the marine litter to the mangrove forest.

The Breathe of Tide The breathe which represent the movement of the tide, the ebb and flow of the tide is the essence and characteristic which form up the unique identity of the Tanjung Api Village. The core idea of the design is to remain and enhance the vernicular essence and activities to sustain the local community. The ebb and flow of the tide is welcome to participate the activities in the community cultural center. The phenomenon of the flow of the tide which appear in the community center would made the architecture communicate with the existing natural environment. Architecture is not just an object that placed in the environment. The existence and appearance of the community cultural center act as a living body which interact with the people. The characteristic of the community center is humble which located in the existing environment without any changes of the existing environment and also bring out the emotions and memories of the local villages.

Design Strategy The Breathe of Tide Eco-learning Neighbourhood Center
The ecology leisure programme help the researcher interact with the local villagers, and attempts to deliver the knowledge of mangrove forest conservation to increase the awareness of environmental preservation
UPM Researcher
The wetland ecology park serve as a leisure programme for the local villagers and visitors to enjoy the fun of catching the tiny fishes abd crabs
The UPM student and reseracher involved an environmental purified project regularly which located around the Tanjung Api Village.
The ‘ Gotong - royong’, the local community activities encourage the local villagers cooperated to clean the marine litters in the mangrove forest
Beside enjoying the fun of the wetland ecology leisure activity, the local villagers could also learn the knowledge of the environment preservation through playing
Local Villager
Most of the villagers are the first generation who was the fishermen before and also the young generation, wheras the second generation attempts to work at the city, and left the village

Programme
The Breathe of Tide Eco-learning Neighbourhood Center
The programs and spaces layout was arranged rationally for multifuntion. All the spaces was arrange according the characteristic of the spaces. By having fun with the existing wetland ecology activities, the users could learn the knowledge of preserving the existing environment. The dynamic programs was designed for the users to experience and play around the community center which is much more active toward the users to contact with the existing environment. Wheras, the static programs was desiged for the users to meditate and educated about the knowledge of the conservation of the mangrove forest and also get familiar with the researcher who are participating the local environment purification project. The ground area was mostly arranged with the dynamic programs, for the users to play and learn. The first floor area was arranged with the static programs for the users to educated and meditated. The second floor was the workplace for the researcher to work which is much more private.

Site Approach The Breathe of Tide Eco-learning Neighbourhood Center
The proposed site is located beside the Tanjung Api Village and there is a stream in between the proposed site and the village. The site is sandwiched between a primary road, Lorong Tanjung Api 9 and a secondary road, Lorong Tanjung Api 4.
27
Most of the land is covered by the existing mangrove forest. And also there is an existing manmade structure is going to to be demolished located at the center of the proposed site
The north view of the proposed site is view to the Tanjung Api Village and the south view of the proposed site is view to the mangrove forest and the river front
The bare land which near to the primary road would be developed as the main access of the site. The bare land which located near the secondary road would be developed as the services route
Remain the existing mangrove forest as the natural barrier to reduce the noise impact from the surrounding area, and decrease the direct sunlight penetrate in the internal spaces
Split the building mass of the center to increase the direction view from the center to the surrounding mangrove forest
The building mass is divided into three different function of blocks which are the accommodation, social community and the instituitional.
The internal courtyard interlocking at the center of the center as a connection among the three different block
The building blocks is designed with solid and void to maximize the view from the internal spaces
The circulation of the center is surrounded the spaces and the main access of the center is located at the north of the building which link the villagers approach the site.

The circulation of the community center is designed fully opened to view the surrounding existing environment. The solid and void building mass of the structure allow the background magrove forest view intergrated into the atmosphere of the center. The relationship netween the internal spaces and the outdoor surrounding environment is very harmony and comfortable. The verandah within the different spaces connected the activities and form up a good relationship between the spaces for the users to access. The circulation is combined with the natural existing view for the users to form up the unique identity of the community center emotionally. The verandah and the circulation area are one of the important part of the design where the users and villagers meet each other from different spaces. Vorious of the sustainable green featured was applied into the building design in order to reduce the usage of the electricity. The solid and void design of the building mass allow the cross ventilation of the internal spaces to achieve the thermal comfort of the internal spaces. The application of the jalousie windows create an interactive relationship with the users to use the openings to cooling the internal spaces actively. The internal courtyard become the opened spaces to release the hot air to cool down the surrounding spaces. The skylight design is applied into building design to allowed the indirect sunlight penetrate into the spaces to reduce the use of electrical lighting system. Due to the remaining of the existing mangrove forest, partial of the natural daylight would be blocked by the forest. The enlargement of the opening is used to enhance more natural daylight penetrate into the spaces. 50
