Winter 2017
For the fall 2016 issue of MODE Magazine, we decided to take the magazine in a different direction. In the past, the magazine has largely been confined to one specific theme that often left our editors and writers confined to a central topic. Since this past year has seen changes to domestic and international political climates, acts of both violence and sheer kindness, and outpourings of human emotion around the world, it was important for us to give our writers the creative freedom that we’ve all been needing. When the world seems impossible to deal with, what does an artist or writer do? Create, of course. Thus, thanks to the contributions of the writers and editors alike, this semester’s issue became one of the strongest our editorial board has seen since MODE’s initial release in 2013. It’s exciting to open up the pages of our magazine for advice on the best $20 face masks you can find and the latest winter trends that will get everyone through these cold, winter months. It is my hope that our readers find that this semester’s issue covers a variety of topics, ranging from an article on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things to those on the “The Fordham You Never Knew” and love after graduation. After all, 2016 was a whirlwind of new beginnings and game changers (both good and bad). Why not have our issue reflect those final months of what will most likely be considered one of the most memorable years of the century?

THE
FORDHAM WE NEVER KNEW A #TBT STORY BY CAROLINE DEAKIN
T
DODRANSBICENTENNIAL...
he word is everywhere: your hats, your shirts, and—due to sheer repetition—your minds. Yet, I’m willing to bet you still stutter a little to pronounce it and that. is. okay. It is, however, important to know that this word means our beloved university is, quite officially, old: 175 years to be exact. Therefore, in the name of a deserving birthday celebration, consider this a #tbt to the adolescence of this place we’ve come to call home. Rose Hill has clearly blossomed from the early days of Dagger John’s ambitious endeavors. What’s that saying again? “With change comes great opportunity”? As the blessed students we are to be here, let’s take a minute to appreciate the changes that have happened since our humble beginnings: building-by-gothic-building.
THE UNIVERSITY CHURCH
Built in 1845, our beautiful church hasn’t really changed much in purpose. Its name was once “Our Lady of Mercy” and initially served as a parish and college chapel. Today, it’s recognized as an official city landmark. And you know those beautiful windows? As a gift from King Louis Philippe of France, they were once intended for Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Manhattan, but were too small. Luckily, Fordham reaped the stained-glass benefits.
Hughes hall Today, you think business. However, as far back as the 1890s, Hughes was just a regular dorm. The building didn’t become the Gabelli School of Business until 2012, after Mario Gabelli’s $25 million donation permitted the University to revamp nearly every aspect of the building besides its exterior. Dean Rapaccioli calls the building today a “perfect combination of old-world charm and modern-day business elegance.” Spot on.
Finlay HALL After the School of Medicine left Thebaud Hall, it found a permanent home in none other than your favorite spiral-staired sophomore dorm, Finlay Hall. Around 250 students were enrolled in the School of Medicine, but by 1921 financial issues and problems with the American Medical Association caused the school to close its doors.
KeAting Hall One day, whether it be three years from now or in just five short months, you’ll be receiving your diploma in front of this beauty. That tradition, is nothing new. Keating Hall finished construction in 1935 and was used for commencement the following June in 1936. In 1947, it welcomed the beginnings of WFUV which, to this day, still finds its home in the Keating basement.
Collins hall In 1905, Collins Hall opened as the home of Fordham Law, but its run here on campus was short lived as all law operations moved to Manhattan just one year later in 1906. Collins was also the original home to now non-existent Fordham University School of Medicine, but it too quickly moved to a new location in Thebaud Hall. What was up, Collins? Moral of the story? There’s 175 YEARS more to Fordham than we see while walking from class to class. Learn it, love it, and as always—go set that world on fire. 5

Forging Their Own Path By Natalie Zisa
I
t’s no secret that Fordham is full of some incredibly talented individuals. There are club leaders, student athletes, and people with dream internships on our campus. But beyond that, there are students running a business, while simultaneously trying to solve problems in their communities. Mode spoke with three students who have managed to add entrepreneur to their resume to find out what inspired them, what challenges they face, and what goals they have for the future.
Makena Masterson, GSB’19, Founder of Snox
Makena Masterson came up with the idea for Snox, what she calls the love child of a sneaker and a sock, when she was admitted to the hospital for a blood clot in her arm at the age of 14. While she was there, she felt compelled to do something to help the children who were sicker than she was. Though she felt like she was too young, her parents, who are also entrepreneurs, changed her mind. Two years later, Makena launched Snox and decided to donate all of the profits to charities, including the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, Rotary International, and Action Against Hunger. Makena only donates to highly ranked charities that she finds on CharityNavigator.org so that she doesn’t make the mistake of donating to a charity that’s not using the money wisely. To date, Snox has raised close to $9,000.
Michelle Berardino, FCRH ’19, Founder of Wallep
Michelle Berardino always considered herself an entrepreneur, but it wasn’t until she became involved with Social Impact 360 that the idea for Wallep was born. “The program really made me think of something that I was passionate about and how I could use that passion to solve a problem,” says Michelle. As someone who’s lived with a severe peanut and tree nut allergy for the past 17 years, Michelle wanted to use this as a chance to help the allergy community with some of the issues they were facing. She decided to hone in on a small demographic of girls between the ages of 16 and 20 when she came up with the idea to design a wallet that would have a compartment built for an EpiPen. “It’s different than the bulky EpiPens that people have to carry; those are really obtrusive. I want girls my age to have something that looks reminiscent of a Michael Kors or Kate Spade wallet, but with a little caveat that it helps them.”
Enzo Obeso, GSB’18, Founder of Ventir
8
Enzo Obeso founded Ventir based on the observation that the way luggage is designed hasn’t been changed for centuries. Not to mention, it’s one of the only consumer products that doesn’t adapt to people’s specific lifestyle. Enzo explains that Ventir’s entrance into the luggage market will begin with backpacks because they have the most utilitarian advantage. Still in the design stage of the product, Enzo’s biggest challenge is funds. “We’re trying to build this business into something we can do after school that can give us financial returns. Our goal is to dominate the whole luggage industry and how do you do that as a college student who has limited time and limited resources?” Along with Makena and Michelle, Enzo was a winner of the $2,500 Kenneth Cole grant two years in a row. He explains that Social Impact has also helped with maintaining an ethical business model. “We’re trying to figure out how we can manufacture this at a price point that’s affordable for the market and do it ethically, by using the right materials.” Though building Ventir has come with its fair share of challenges, Enzo continues to be extremely passionate about his business. When asked what kind of advice he would give to other young entrepreneurs, he emphasized how rewarding the process is. “When you’re able to turn an idea into something physical, it’s really cool. When you’re building a company, you’re overseeing every little aspect of it. The worst thing is, you fail. Best thing, you make a fortune out of doing something really cool.”
NEW SHOW PROVES THAT NETFLIX IS TAKING OVER T By Kathryn Roberts
his past summer marked the debut of the Netflixoriginal show, Stranger Things, which has completely taken the country by storm. The series stars Hollywood big-names like Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine, and revolves around a group of young boys growing up in the 1980s who stumble upon a telekinetic girl named Eleven. Caught up in the consequences of a secret government lab experiment, the boys and their new friend must battle a supernatural monster and rescue their missing friend, Will. My recommendation: if you’re a fan of The Goonies, then you’ll love Stranger Things. While the gripping plot has contributed to the show’s success, it’s the child actors who have gained the hearts of binge-watchers across the country. The names and faces of actors Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp have been gracing Twitter feeds and news articles since the show’s release. The overwhelming responses to the Netflix series has already brought about many opportunities for the tweens. The group performed their own version of “ Uptown Funk” at this year’s Emmy Awards ceremony. The creative director for Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere, even launched a runway campaign with the 12- to 14-year-olds because of his love for the show. The overnight success of Stranger Things is just one example of the thriving empire Netflix is creating. In May 2016, Forbes ranked the groundbreaking entertainment business as #15 on its list of most innovative companies, with their market cap at $41.1 billion. It’s the company’s convenience that has turned it into an empire. The ability to access your favorite shows or movies from a phone or computer is so simple—not to mention perfect for college students who are always on the go. Over the past several years, Netflix has been working on creating its own exclusive content. Some of the company’s most popular shows include Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, and Narcos. According to Forbes, Netflix cut its library of shows and films by 50% in October in order to make room for the vast amount of original works that it is producing. Stranger Things has everyone talking and it has already been picked up for a second season, which will premiere on Netflix in 2017. The s eason will feature n ine episodes, which is one more than the first season. If you’re not into whole supernatural scene, Netflix insures that you have plenty of other original series to choose from. And what is winter break for other than to dive into some amazing new shows and movies?

Rogue... What?
You’ve heard the hype and maybe even seen the teaser trailer that aired during primetime coverage of the Rio Olympics—Star Wars is back at it again to excite fans. But wait…wasn’t there just a movie last year? Yes! That was Star Wars: The Force Awakens (AKA Episode VII), which continued the storylines of the protagonists first introduced to the world back in the 1977 Episode IV—namely, the desert farmhand Luke Skywalker, the regal Princess Leia, and the enterprising smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca—while introducing new heroes in Finn and Force-user Rey. What’s to come then? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first film of the Star Wars Anthology, a collection of films filling narrative gaps left by the franchise’s other installments. Arriving in American cinemas on December 16, 2016,
10
Rouge One turns back the Rebels’ clock––think of it as “Episode 3.8” of the Star Wars timeline, depicting how the Alliance manages to steal the blueprints for the evil Galactic Empire’s iconic Death Star from under the noses of scheming Director Krennic and his menacing black-clad Deathtroopers. Chief among the Rebel agents tasked with this seemingly impossible mission is Felicity Jones’s Sergeant Jyn Erso, who is spurred to action thanks in part to Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gererra. It is encouraging to see two women (both British, as it happens) at the helm of this universally known film series. Erso’s diverse crew includes three actors of Asian descent—Riz Ahmed’s Bodhi Rook, Donnie Yen’s Chirrut Imwe, and Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus—plus Mexican Diego Luna’s Captain Andor. Alan Tudyk also provides audiences with the captivating and hulking security android character of K-2SO. Still not sold? Comments from the film’s producers in the July 2016 issue of Entertainment Weekly promise Rogue One is gritty and action-packed rather than glitzy and predictable. With the film occupying a key position in the Star Wars timeline, there is simply no better time to journey to that galaxy far, far away.
SNOW IS IN THE AIR AND GILMORE GIRLS ARE BACK “ By Alex Peterson
I smell snow!” Lorelai exclaims. If you are a true Gilmore Girls fanatic, like myself, you already that know Lorelai Gilmore, a thirty-two year old single mom, has the superhuman power of being able to smell snow. Snow brings with it all the bliss of the holiday season—hot cocoa, sleigh rides, and ice skating. For Lorelai Gilmore, it brings so much more. It snowed on Lorelai’s best birthday, her first kiss, and her daughter Rory’s first steps. Furthermore, Lorelai’s first connection to snow was when she was five years old and had an ear infection. She wished something wonderful would happen to her, and the next morning she woke up to a white blanket of snow. Since that day, Lorelai has always seen snow as a magical coat of happiness. During season one, snow brings a love interest into Lorelai’s life: Max Medina. That’s right—the one, the only, the super cool and super cute AP Literature teacher. Although the romance of a Chilton teacher and a Chilton mom may be frowned upon, Lorelai and Max have an unforgettable first date. By the forces of magical snow, Max’s car breaks down in the Stars Hollow, the Gilmore’s little corner in the world. As Lorelai passes the auto shop she sees Max and says, “I smell snow.” The two grab take out, and walk through town until they end up at the Black, White and Read Movie Theatre. During the movie, Lorelai begins to talk, and Max finds this annoying habit to be one of many attributes he loves. The relationship between Lorelai and snow is not brought up again until season 5, episode 11. However, if you pay attention to detail throughout the series, viewers realize snow is always present when good things are happening. When Lorelai and her best friend, Sookie decide to start working on establishing their own inn, snow seems to be right around the corner. Another instance where snow is present occurs when Luke, diner owner, teaches Lorelai to fish. Lorelai needs to learn to fish because she has a date with an outdoorsy guy, Alex. The scene takes place
in Lorelai’s snow-covered front yard with a kiddie pool and two fishing poles. It’s one of those classic “Luke and Lorelai” scenes where you want them to be together so badly. Finally, in season 5, episode 8, Lorelai wakes up in the middle of the night and runs down to the street and again says, “I smell snow.” It is now a familiar saying of Lorelai Gilmore and as a fan you can’t wait to see what marvelous magic it will create. However, the relationship has a rough patch during this episode. The next morning, Lorelai’s car is snowed in and she must walk to work. She arrives at work to find there is no coffee for her because Sookie is saving it for the customers. Lorelai ventures across town to Luke’s Diner because coffee is like oxygen to Lorelai. As she walks to Luke’s, her foot gets stuck in a pile of snow, and she is outraged! Lorelai is convinced that her and snow are through and will never mend their special bond. But then the magic begins. The next day Lorelai comes home to an ice rink in her front yard, and Luke holding a pair of ice skates. You can’t help but remember the fish scene a few seasons back because not only is the setting the same, but Luke’s affection hasn’t changed. On November 25, the deep relationship between snow and Lorelai Gilmore was rekindled when a new season of Gilmore Girls returned to Netflix. How appropriate to begin the magic of Gilmore Girls with the magic of snow. For me, Gilmore Girls will always belong in winter because when I was seven, my family and I watched five seasons during the winter break. So, as the trees become bare and world around me turns into a real life snow globe, I will always think of my favorite motherdaughter duo, Lorelai and Rory, and the magic of snow.

ossing an aged rugby ball between his hands, Andrew Friedman (GSB ‘17) joked that posing in front of a camera felt more intense than a job interview. I joked along, commenting that directing a photoshoot was not as smooth-sailing as it appeared. Having met Andrew in the midst of our sophomore year, conferring with him in an empty conference room in Hughes Hall for our post-cover shoot interview was more of meetup between old friends than a firestorm of questions. Our conversation spilled well over thirty minutes, covering topics from his strong commitment to his academics to his four-year involvement with Global Outreach! (GO!). Majoring in Finance with a concentration in Alternative Investments, Andrew landed a postgraduate job as an investment bank analyst at Barclays. In this position he’ll collaborate with a team to provide financial advising to major

companies and corporations. While his academic and professional successes set him apart from many, his extensive involvement in rugby and social justice work make Andrew a standout player both on and off the field. Our conversation first drifted to his heavy involvement in GO!, a Fordham program that he has been involved in since his freshman year. After participating in social justice during his high school years in California, Andrew was attracted to GO! after having “felt lost [freshman year]. I really wanted to get more involved in campus during my second semester and fell in love with Global Outreach! as an institution. It’s helped me learn a lot about myself and the world, and various cultures.” He has participated in the GO! Romania, India, and Nicaragua trips. As a senior, he was selected in the fall semester to lead a group of Fordham students (along with a chaperone) on the GO! India 2017 project. Having
N
served on the GO! India 2015 project, I asked Andrew what he hoped to accomplish by returning to the country and how his experience would be different as a leader rather than a general member of the team: “Going back will be interesting. During my first trip on the project, I definitely struggled and it was one of the more challenging things I’ve ever done. It took me a while to recover (I guess in a sense) from the experience and process everything. Going back, I’ll definitely have some nerves, but I’m excited to re-engage with the community and the people there, and push myself even further than the last time, and to grow even more.” While the experience of GO!ing often gives way to personal growth and cultural immersion, he is quick to add that it is important for a team member to let go of the misconception that they can “save the world” in ten days. Rather, it is the ways in which he or she brings their experiences back with them that creates positive long-term change. Andrew, as the trip’s leader, is responsible for forming the trip’s itinerary and acting as a liaison between his team and representatives from the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, an organization that Mother Teresa founded. Part of the project will be spent working with the Missionaries of Charity, where the team is set to visit various homes in the city of Calcutta to assist children and the elderly. The Fordham students are also set to partner with St. Xavier’s College in Calcutta and interact with the college’s students: “They have an exchange program with a few rural villages and they actually have a new college campus in one of those villages. So we’ll most likely spend some time there where we’ll learn about various economic and social justice issues.” While his professional interests lie in finance, when asked how he hopes to continue his involvement in social justice post-graduation, he states that it will be difficult for him to engage in such initiatives in the first few years due to his heavy work schedule. However, he does add that he could see himself working for or running his own non-profit down the line. “There’s always little ways that you can incorporate that mindset into your daily life,” he says.
13
In his free time, Andrew additionally serves as President of the Fordham Men’s Rugby team. He’s been a member since his freshman year when he decided to try-out after receiving encouragement from a high school friend, who was a member of the team. As a football and soccer player during his high school years, he found that he was largely attracted to the serious nature and community atmosphere of the Fordham rugby team. Their successes in the past few years have been noteworthy, from their trip to Nationals for the Sevens in Spring 2016 to ending this year’s league season 4-2 as third overall. He goes on to add that the team did struggle with “growing pains” in his first two years as a member. While they had a plethora of talent, the men’s rugby team fought to execute plays and a lack guidance from their coaches ultimately ended with a complete overhaul of their coaching staff. Andrew states that the team’s journey has been “a bit of a revolution and it’s been great to watch the transition the team has made over the years, so I’m definitely proud of that. I’m hoping to leave this team in a better position than I inherited it and I hope to see it grow moving forward.” Adding that there has been a 180-degree
14
turnaround in the team’s culture, rugby will be one of the things he will miss most. In closing remarks, I chose to ask Andrew who drives him to obtain his goals and successes. As the youngest of four, he cites his family, particularly his parents, as the major driving source in his life. He says, “My parents have supported me and my siblings and they’ve done everything that they can to give us every opportunity, which is amazing. I’m definitely eternally grateful for that, so that drives me to be the best that I can and take advantage of everything that I’ve been given.” While I asked who drove him, I didn’t forget to ask who inspired him: “The main figures have been Mother Teresa, who is big part of the GO! India project and has been an inspiration in my own life for a multitude of reasons. And, just in general, my great-uncle Steve, who passed away when I was young, is probably one of the most inspirational figures for me for a lot of reasons. He taught me the value of life, and the value of pursuing what you love and what makes you happy. He’s someone I keep in mind at all times.”

Plaid Skirts: Trend Then, Trend Now By Morgan Romero A plaid skirt always catches my eye when it’s displayed within a shiny store window. This article of clothing is a versatile piece that can convey one’s individuality through limitless combinations. Its origins are vintage, yet it can be morphed to fit modern trends.
This look has come back into style, inspired by the 1960s trend of plaid skirts with socks. In the ‘70s, it evolved into pleated, pencil, and longer-hemmed plaid skirts. The plaid skirt has recently evolved to go with a modern streetstyle, punk attitude. For this look, it can be worn with a
trendy crop top, sweater, or simple T-shirt. Plaid miniskirts can also be accessorized with thigh-high socks or stockings, which add a more edgy effect to any outfit.
Punk:
Whenever I am feeling edgy, I like to wear a plaid miniskirt that typically features variants of reds and blacks. I usually accessorize this with patterned knee-highs or lacy black socks, finished with a pair of black booties or even black patent leather rain boots. For the top half of the look, a fitted black tank top tucked into the skirt creates a very flattering look. Finally, I like to make the outfit extra bold with a choker and red lipstick for when I’m feeling especially punk-y.
Classic:
I sometimes have days when I want to be comfortable, yet sophisticated. For this look, I prefer pleated skirts that look like I’m about to head onto the set of Gossip Girl. I like to wear either a pair of black tights or ivory stockings. For shoes, go with a pair of neutral-colored Converse or black Mary Janes. When channeling this look, I usually tend to go for a neutral-colored sweater or turtleneck. If you want a pop of color, a green or red thermal shirt will also complement the boldness of your skirt.
Fancy:
On days where I go to a formal event, I find that plaid skirts can be worn to assume a more elegant look. In this case I prefer a longer plaid skirt, typically of midi-length. Pair it with any top: a cropped sweater, a cropped tank top, a collared blouse, or a simple white T-shirt. Lastly, add a pair of heels to fancy up this look. 16
CLOTHES THAT LAST A LIFETIME For me, shopping has never been about the origins of fashion. Our generation, obsessed with brand names and celebrity “fashion,” has overlooked the fact that fashion is what works. If you can make it yourself or make it new again out of your mother’s old things in the attic, then there’s no reason you shouldn’t. In fact, if nothing else, I have found that the “family heirlooms” of fashion are the pieces that I covet most. On a crisp day a few falls back, my boredom swept me into the attic. My mother had always kept an untouched rack of plastic bagencased clothes preserved in the attic. Like a six-year-old in her mom’s heels, I wanted nothing more than to try on my mom’s old clothes. An inky velvet corset with a V-shaped waist and a black lace midi skirt: it was the dress that first caught my eye, even under the rumpled, dusty Bloomingdale’s dress bag. It wasn’t the first time that I had thought about stealing my mom’s clothes, but this dress (a few sizes too small for its original owner and collecting dust in the attic) was the first time I inherited a family heirloom. It wasn’t until I told my mom that I had found the dress I wanted to wear to prom and proceeded to model it for her that I learned it was the very dress she had worn to her senior formal almost thirty years before. Many people think of fashion as a cycle, with trends leaping onto the scene only to disappear into the fashion police page of People until a designer resuscitates it at fashion week years later. And this is certainly true for a majority of fashion. However, there remains a sliver that represents the “classics”: those pieces which remain within the fickle fascination of the fashion industry and forever remain stunning works of art. Thrift shopping in my own attic, my refusal to wear the Juicy tracksuit, Crocs, and acid wash jeans of my childhood felt immensely validated and the adage “time will tell” infinitely more obvious. Following the pack when it comes to fashion only gets you a pile of cringe-worthy clothes to donate to charity. When you buy something, you should love it enough to want to squeeze into it twenty years later; you should love it enough to beam with pride when your daughter begs to steal it.

SHOPPING IN YOUR MOTHER’S (AND GRANDMOTHER’S) CLOSET
In the past few years, the scales have tipped so that handme-downs make up the majority of my closet. Digging through the preserved frocks in both my grandmother’s attic and my own, I have come into immense fashion wealth: a dual medal open choker, a mod iridescent pendant, a thick suede camel belt with a huge worn gold buckle, an ornately patterned maxi wrap-around skirt, tan motorcycle-meetscowboy boots, and so much more. One of my favorite hidden gems is a fabulous threetoned fur coat. Pulled from the rack of my mom’s abandoned clothes, I came to learn that my mom had stolen it from my grandmother when she was my age. For me at least, fashion is family. Every compliment on a family heirloom means a million times more because I know it’s unique—not something that my peers can jet out to Urban Outfitters to replicate—and it lets me carry a small piece of my family with me wherever I go.

FOUR ICY FRESH SNEAKER OPTIONS FOR WINTER
T
here’s no doubt that sneakers are no longer just for the gym. The combination of comfort and style is a huge reason why we’ve seen more and more people in recent years incorporating sneakers into their everyday wardrobes. People have flawlessly integrated athleisure into their everyday style at no expense to comfort. Popular athletic brands such as Nike, Adidas, and Puma have all made it easier for us to dress well and live in comfort. All three brands have created more luxury pieces in order to cater to the current athleisure trends. We have also seen many brands create beautiful sneaker options for the growing market that pair perfectly with our athleisure staples. Here are some awesome and comfortable sneakers that you should try out this winter with your newest athleisure pieces.
Achieving the Three “C’s” of Denim for Winter
By Connor Howlett enim is one of the most versatile materials in fashion, and the possibilities for styling it are endless. Since the advent of jeans in 1873 by Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, denim has become a wardrobe staple across the globe. When it comes to winter fashion, layering is your best friend, and luckily, denim is easy to layer. Layering creates detail within your outfit while also making sure you don’t look like a big bundle of fabric walking down the street.
COMFORTABLE
A city day-trip to ice skate at Rockefeller or a stroll through Central Park are two perfect occasions to incorporate denim into your look. Layering is key during the winter months to both look great and feel warm, so try a denim shirt with a cardigan or bomber jacket on top to create some contrast. On days that you’ll be spending a lot of time walking, jeans are your best bet. If you opt for jeans on days like these, try rolling them up and adding a pair of sneakers like Converse or New Balance to keep your feet comfortable while you walk the frigid streets.
CLASSY
During winter, the thought of even getting out of your warm, cozy bed can seem like the end of the world, let alone looking presentable while doing so. Luckily, with the help of denim. you can make your “sweats and a pullover” look pop a little more. The next time sweatpants are calling your name, don’t be afraid to layer your pullover or zip-up hoodie with a denim jacket. You’ll look like you put more effort into your outfit than you actually did, while still feeling warm and cozy on your walk to class.

Winter time is full of holidays, meaning there’s no shortage of parties to attend. Luckily, these parties are the perfect opportunity to dress to impress. Dark denim is the key for formal wear, so pair a button down or dressy shirt with a pair of dark wash resin or black jeans. If your outfit still feels too casual, layer a sweater with an open blazer. Dress your denim up via your shoes: opt for oxfords or ballet flats to maintain a professional silhouette. These shoes are versatile and will look good with almost anything you choose to wear. If the party calls for it, spruce up your outfit with a holiday sweater to look casual without coming across sloppy. No matter what you choose, you’ll be ready to have to a good time.

Nike Air Max I Royal T
This first pair will most definitely keep your feet warm through all kinds of weather. The Nike Air Max I was originally designed by Tinker Hatfield, one of the most influential sneaker designers of all time, and released in 1987. This year, Nike decided to rework this classic silhouette for the ladies in an beautiful all-suede upper. The shoe also includes a clean leather-wrapped heel which is unique to this release. We will most definitely even see some men rocking this luxurious shoe in the coming months.
Nike Air Max Thea Mid
This second shoe was designed specifically to withstand the harsher winter months and keep your ankles protected from snow. It combines the silhouette of a chelsea boot with a comfortable sneaker sole. For the 25th anniversary of the Air Max I release, Nike released the Air Max Thea in 2013. The new shoe that was designed specifically with ladies in mind took classic features from the original Air Max and streamlined them into a sleek sneaker. As a step-up from the Thea, this year Nike reworked the structure to a mid/boot style. The shoe is made from leather and will definitely keep your ankles toasty warm this winter.
NAKED X VANS SK8-HI
Everything about this shoe just shouts winter, especially its icey blue color. Naked, the selectively curated women’s Danish sneaker store, released its first collaboration with Vans this past October. The collaboration included two colorways of the classic Vans SK8-HI in Petal Pink and Hint of Mint. Naked brings a unique twist to the SK8-HI by using woven leather for the upper. This change in fabric instantly makes this version of the SK8-HI perfect for use in the winter. No amount of NYC slush will seep through these clean shoes.
Adidas Originals Stan Smith CF OP
This last shoe is one of my favorites. It's such an easy shoe to wear and it's a staple piece for any college wardrobe. One of the most popular shoes, selling over 40 million pairs, the Adidas Stan Smith has rapidly become every sneaker enthusiast's go-to since its re-release in 2014. Recently the Stan Smith was upgraded specifically for women in pink nubuck leather, but only in limited quantities. The nubuck leather is water resistant and Adidas was able to use laser etching on the heel and tongue to give the shoe the iconic Stan Smith labels. It’s perfect for any season because of its versatility.
FROM THE RUNWAY TO REALITY By: Sophie Psilakis
N
ew York Fashion Week always brings in a brand new influx of trends ready to take over the fashion industry. Although these styles were designed for the runway and not with practicality in mind, it is definitely possible to seamlessly incorporate them into your own wardrobe. A trend that made an appearance on many runways, including Vera Wang, Jason Wu, and Lanyu, is sheer fabric. Recently in fashion, more androgynous styles like bomber jackets and sneakers have been taking over women’s street style, but this usage of sheer fabrics re-establishes an ultra-feminine feel. While on the runway, the sheer fabric was featured primarily in couture dresses with skin peeking through, but the fabric is definitely more than versatile enough to transition into the colder months. To make this look winter appropriate, yet also ready for either class or a night in the city, pair a sheer draped blouse with black skinny jeans and your favorite booties. You’ll get the elegance and femininity guaranteed by the sheer blouse, but the black jeans and booties will keep the rest of the outfit sleek and effortless. Another popular trend amongst designers this season is velvet. Although this luxe fabric has been a holiday staple in fashion for decades, various designers have given it a whole new vibe;
Victoria Beckham revamped the classic pantsuit using a jewel toned crushed velvet. Perfect for the holidays, velvet is a foolproof and always appropriate choice of fabric. To make the look a bit more special than simply a predictable red velvet dress, opt for an unexpected pop of color. For example, to make this fit and flare purple velvet dress the focus of your look, keep the accessories minimal; a pair of tights to keep you warm and a simple pair of heels is all you need. If necessary, throw on a jacket to complete the look, and enjoy the party! A trend that was seen shining on the runway is that of metallic clothing and accessories. This trend is no longer just for prom and New Year’s Eve; when styled properly, metallic can add the perfect amount of glam to any look. Whether it be silver, gold, or multicolored, metallics come in a wide variety of shades, so it easy to find something to match your personal style. Cynthia Rowley chose a bold metallic orange to create a long slip dress, but using metallics a little more sparingly would make this trend wearable for the everyday. Subtlety is key with trends this domineering; the basis of the outfit should be monotonous. All black will allow the metallic to effortlessly pop. Let a fun, metallic shoe be the focal point of your look. This way you can rock the glamour in a sophisticated way. 19
Ethical and Sustainable Fashion Brands By Erika Foschi At last year’s 2016 Met Gala, Emma Watson stunned onlookers in her custom Calvin Klein gown made entirely of recycled plastic. She surprised us further when she later announced her commitment to wearing only ethically and sustainably produced clothing of the red carpet. Following suit, H&M, announced their very own ‘Conscious’ line, which featured clothing crafted entirely with eco-sustainable means and high ethical standards. Just this past year, Fordham University’s Institute for Women and Girls hosted its own Sustainable Fashion Show and Panel. These are just a few examples that illuminate the rise in demand for ethically and sustainably produced fashion.
This is a familiar brand which is popular all around the world, and especially well loved on the Fordham campus. Patagonia has had a long standing commitment to fair trade policies and environmentalism since its inception in 1973. The company provides outerwear, athletic gear, and iconic fleeces fit for any kind of outdoor adventure. Many of their products are made using recycled fabrics and plastics, and are stuffed with humanely gathered goose down.

One may ask, what exactly does it mean to be ethically or sustainably produced? To be ethically produced means that each of these companies employ factories that are certified for providing fair wages and safe working conditions to their workers, ensuring respectful treatment of all workers involved in the process of the manufacturing clothes. To be sustainable means that the clothing was produced using organic or recycled materials in an eco-friendly factory that utilizes shipping methods which reduce environmental impact. The following companies are very transparent when it comes to their commitment to ethical and sustainable practices and you can research all of their production information on their websites.
This has to be one of my favorite brands in general. Everlane is an online retailer with a small base in NYC, providing clothing, shoes and accessories to both men and women. Their look is contemporary, chic, and minimal. What is most unique about this brand is that the company has a transparent breakdown on the price of every single item of clothing they produce. This practice informs customers exactly how much it costs to make and ship the clothing, and exactly how much profit Everlane makes.
The original pioneer in denim is now a pioneer in sustainable production practices as well. Many Levi jeans are made of recycled and repurposed materials; not to mention, Levi has made great efforts in water conservation by growing cotton and dyeing denim through more water responsible methods. Your favorite pair of 501s probably feel a whole lot more comfortable with your newfound knowledge that they were made with minimal impact on the environment!
What is better than pretty underwear? How about pretty underwear that makes a social and environmental impact? Naja is a lingerie company that seeks to empower women; both the women who wear their lingerie, and those who make it. Naja employs primarily single mothers in underprivileged communities, pays fair wages, and grants familybuilding benefits.
Patch Jacket DIY: I f one thing was obvious while shopping for fall and winter clothes, it was that jackets with appliqué patches and pins had come onto the scene in a big way. Denim jackets littered with band logos, hearts, peace signs, and more became a trend I wanted to invest in. However, the more price tags I checked, the more I realized there was definitely a limit to how much I was willing to pay for this overpriced ‘90s revival––$99 from Urban Outfitters, $128 from Express, and $695 from Alice + Olivia. More so, each time I tried on a patch denim jacket, I was never fully sold. Like a stickercovered laptop, patch denim jackets should symbolize the interest and personality of the person wearing it. The patches on the jackets for sale weren’t things that felt relevant to my life and my passions. I wasn’t about to pretend otherwise, especially not at those prices. So, I did something relatively out of character (because, sadly, I am not a Pinterest DIY queen): I decided to make one for myself. And damn, I’ve never gotten more compliments in my life. The jean
DIY: Chokers

jacket I used wasn’t anything special, just a cheap one of medium-wash and studs from Forever 21. Before I was done, though, it had become one of my favorites. I took a trip to Michael’s and found a collection of over 20 patches. Unfortunately, I also found that the store’s selection didn’t exactly fulfill my expectations. Luckily, I hit the motherload at M&J Trimming, finding an entire wall dedicated to these patches! They had everything––ranging from animals to road signs and government logos, to short sayings like “Bad Ass.” Once I’d amassed about fifteen or so patches, I tried laying them out on the jacket in different arrangements. Using a standard iron and about 30 seconds of pressure on each patch, I had a denim jacket with appliqué patches and pins that I felt actually represented me. Plus, it only cost me $40! Each time I wear the jacket, I have people clamoring to know where I’d gotten it and they’re always floored when I tell them it’s a DIY. Trust me, even us basic girls who don’t know how to sew should try this out.
By Emma Potsklan hether you’re going for a night out in the city or having a casual lunch with friends, most can agree that a choker is the perfect accessory to complete a look. With so many different styles ranging from satin to leather, you can find one to pair with almost any outfit for any occasion. However, as cute as they are, when online shopping, I am shocked by the outrageous price tags on the simplest pieces of fabric. Popular stores such as Are You Am I, Nasty Gal, and Urban Outfitters are selling chokers ranging from $20 to $80! Though most girls will opt for the less expensive options offered, why pay more than a few dollars (or any at all)when you don’t have to? KANYE WEST The Progression of a Fashion Icon
You have heard his name plenty of times before and, whether you like him or not, it is hard to deny the fact that Kanye West has had a significant impact on pop culture. The songs he has produced, the critically acclaimed albums he has released, the fashion lines he has worked on, and the women he has dated have all helped him become the mogul he is today. However, behind all of the talent and bravado, Kanye has always had an interest in fashion. His style may have transformed numerous times since his initial rise to fame, but he always manages to break down the doors of fashion. Around the release of his debut album The College Dropout and his follow-up, Late Regist ration, Kanye West was pushing fashion boundaries even as a newcomer on the rap scene. The Chicago rapper was known for wearing Ralph Lauren—and lots of it. Vibrant-colored polo shirts and sweaters that sported the classic Polo Ralph Lauren logo were his signatures, usually rocking them a Louis Vuitton backpack and a Roc-A-Fella Records chain. His style seemed to fit the collegiate theme of his albums. As his fame and popularity rose, more fans began to adopt this particular look. In 2007, Kanye West was on top of the world. His single “Stronger” was a smash hit and his third studio album Graduation sold nearly 1 million copies in its first week. Along with the more modern and futuristic sound of the album, ‘Ye also graduated from the collegiate look to a more contemporary style. He continued to wear bright colors, but began to dabble in a variety of high-end brands like Yves Saint Laurent, A Bathing Ape, and his unreleased 22
brand Pastelle. Combined with his signature shutter shades, his innovative fashion sense once again reflected his musical output. Around the release of his albums 808’s and Heartbreak and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye’s dress became increasingly sophisticated. He was more likely to be seen in a designer blazer or suit rather than his usual garments from years past. In fact, he dubbed this suit resurgence as the “Rosewood” movement, having his team wear a Dior suit to every event. They even sported these uniforms in the recording studio, which helped set the mood for the sophistic ated and refined melodies of My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Around this time, Kanye also released signature sneakers in partnerships with Nike and Louis Vuitton, proving his worth as a style icon and a designer. Since the start of the 2010s, Kanye West’s style has remained relatively consistent. He is now known for wearing tapered denim, rocking muted colors, layering, and flaunting the occasional designer garment. It seems that today Mr. West has been more focused on the fashion he is creating than the clothes he is wearing. He has produced four collections for his Yeezy brand and designed several shoes for adidas. Furthermore, ‘Ye has raked in millions of dollars off of his Yeezus and The Life of Pablo merchandise. As rapped in his song “Good Life,” he has always had a passion for fashion. As long as Kanye has the ability and resources to create, he will continue to push the boundaries of whatever he touches.

Black is the New Black By Christina Avianto Photos by Julia Emerson
New Yorkers are notorious for wearing a significant amount of black clothing. While wearing all-black all the time may seem monotonous, there is no denying the color’s convenience when it comes to putting an outfit together. Black is anything but dull; it is chic, flattering, and timeless.
Tip:
Mixing in different textures is the best part of having a monochrome wardrobe. It is important to incorporate different fabrics into your wardrobe because different textures (shimmer, snake skin, leather, suede) are what spice up a seemingly plain outfit. Go for that fur vest or leather jacket. Rather than plain dark wash jeans, find a pair with some embroidery or leather details. Do not be afraid to mix it up because you are still guaranteed to put together a great look!

Looking to keep warm and look cool this winter? There are several trends in men’s fashion breaking through this winter that are sure to keep you in style and comfortable. Boots and brogues are taking the scene of men’s fashion by storm. American Rag has put out a line of Utility Boots and Dr. Martens are hitting the pavement like never before. This footwear trend is bringing the biker/punk look to the world of men’s fashion once again, and it has a strong, rugged appeal. Chelsea boots, often applied to a more professional look, are also becoming prominent as the weather gets colder. These are often worn with, but not limited to, jeans and chinos for a business casual appearance. They can also be worn with a leather jacket and dark jeans for a tougher look. Bomber jackets are also blowing up this fall and made a strong appearance during New York Fashion Week. These are best used as a layering garment, left open with a shirt underneath. They look great dressed down, and can be styled with any of the boots mentioned above. These range in terms of style; some have zippers on the sleeves, some have thick bands around the wrist and waist, but the military inspired vibe is present within these minor differences. Coach has released a new line of men’s jackets, and the bomber is its staple. Light denim has also become a favorite among men this fall, especially in the form of jackets. The 90’s seem to be making a return as old school light denim jackets are seen on men throughout New York. It is possible to wear denim jackets with jeans, but it would only be ideal if the denims complement one another to avoid clashing. They should be a similar wash. Denim jackets, like the bomber, are most often seen left undone with a graphic shirt underneath. But rules are meant to be broken, and fashion is about expression! Consistent with a business casual trend, mens’fashion seems to present chinos as the hottest pants for fall. Coming in two main fits (tight and relaxed), they add a sense of professionalism to any outfit without overdressing it. Common looks range from a tucked-in oxford shirt with dress shoes, to a T- shirt with sneakers. Either way, these pants bring style and class to any wardrobe.
The variety of color among chinos brings about opportunity for eccentricity in a seemingly simple garment. Such colors as burgundy, light blue, and lime green have given the pants some personality this year. Of course, no fall wardrobe is complete without a selection of tops. Oxford shirts seem to be making a strong appearance, in both solid colors and patterns, and are often seen tucked in with chinos. The pocket is not only popular in button-downs, however. T-shirts with a pocket have broken into the fashion world, particularly slim fitting ones. These, too, have been seen tucked in with a belt and jeans, for a casual, understated look.

FROM SLEEPWEAR TO STREETWEAR LINGERIE INSPIRED LOOKS
Where did this trend come from? Various designers incorporated the lingerie/lace look into their spring 2016 readyto-wear runway pieces. Chloé showcased dresses with lace hems, Céline models wore lace-lined baby doll tops, and Versace presented sheer, embroidered slip dresses. Even with designers revamping it today, there is no denying that this trend reminds us of the ‘90s. A look back at just one of Rachel Green’s outfits from Friends can confirm this. The trend can add sophistication to almost any outfit.
The heavy presence of this style is seen all over the runways and designers are, thankfully, carrying the trend into the winter months. We can take inspiration from designers and incorporate sleepwear into our streetwear even in the cold weather by incorporating heavier elements to keep us warm. For example, slip dresses can be laid over turtlenecks and paired with any boot of choice. Slip dresses can also be worn over jeans for those days where tights are just not a feasible option. Lacy tops from summer wardrobes can be layered over a T-shirt or worn under your favorite warm cardigan or leather jacket. If the top is long, slip it under a cropped sweater and create your own lace trim. Take note from Kendall Jenner and style a bralette over a cropped white T-shirt and top off your look with a faux-fur jacket. Bralettes can also be worn under a blazer, creating a peek-a-boo effect. Corsets have also been a popular choice on the runway. You can subtly incorporate this with a corset inspired belt layered over a chunky sweater or blouse. The lingerie trend is all about the details and playing with proportion. The trick is to avoid taking the fad too literally—try to put lingerie-inspired effects where people would least expect to find them.

GIFTS THAT KEEP ON GIVING By Erika Foschi
It’s that time of year again: the holidays have snuck up on you and you were caught unprepared. Have no fear, it’s time to ditch that gift card you were going to give again this year and try some gifts that are a little more in the spirit of giving. These gift ideas will not only make thoughtful presents for your loved ones, but they are also thoughtful because they give back to those in need.
Toms:
A very popular company, Toms is best known for their canvas slip-on shoes but have expanded to eyewear and other accessories. Every purchase of one of their products helps to provide free shoes, education, eye exams and other medical services to children and families in third world countries. Toms are great (I’m on my fourth pair!) because they make a huge variety of footwear and quality eyewear. You can find something to fit anyone’s style or taste! You might think these shoes are comfy, but it will feel even better to know that they go to support impoverished communities around the world!
Thinx: You may have noticed the recent Thinx ads that have been taking over the NYC subways advertising their ‘period proof underwear.’ I received my first pair of Thinx as a Christmas gift about two years ago, and I am utterly obsessed with them. Styles range from lacy thongs to mesh paneled high rise briefs. They’re cute, they’re comfy, they’re empowering, and to all the skeptics out there, they work! Thinx has teamed up with the organization Afripads, which employs Ugandan women to help make reusable maxi pads for local women and girls. With every purchase of a Thinx product, Afripads will donate 3 reusable pads to a girl in Uganda so that she will not have to miss school or worry when her period comes.
Love Your Melon: This brand makes perfect gifts for the winter holidays! Love Your Melon started their campaign in 2012 with the mission to provide a hat to every child in America suffering from cancer. They make knit hats, scarves, and beanies in just about every style and color you can imagine. Every hat is made in the US and the company is run largely by college students. Fordham University even has its own chapter of Love Your Melon campus ambassadors! You can get in contact with them through their Facebook page or Instagram to get your holiday shopping done as soon as possible!
Krochet Kids: Similar to Love Your Melon, Krochet Kids make cozy wool hats and scarves, all hand crocheted by women in Peru and northern Uganda. This non-profit seeks to empower women in impoverished communities by paying them fair wages for their work, as well as mentoring and educating them for work opportunities beyond Krochet Kids. What is unique about their products is that every piece has a tag sewn on signed by the worker who made the product, adding a touching gesture to an already amazing gift.
This holiday season, consider going above and beyond giving just any ordinary gift. By shopping with these brands you will not only be creating smiles at home, but you will also be helping others and creating smiles all over the world.

TOP 6 WINTER CURLY HAIR CARE TIPS By Haley Barbosa
Ladies and gentleman, winter is finally upon us! Not only does this mean the return of cozy knit sweaters and cafe lattes, but also the return of that brisk, dry winter air. If you’re turning up the heat to stay warm, keep in mind the damage that it may be doing to your beloved curls! Dry, cold weather can cause damaging effects to curly hair because its texture is naturally drier than straight hair. Here are some curly hair care tips to keep those curls poppin’—even when the weather isn’t.
1
MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE, MOISTURIZE!
3
Your hair is prone to dryness during colder months, which leads to brittle, frizzy curls that are more likely to break. To combat this, remember to moisturize! This means using thicker leave-in conditioners, heavier butters (like shea butter), and creams when styling your hair. Focus on the middle and ends of the hair, as these are the oldest and driest parts. You might think this sounds like a lot of product, but it’s really not—your parched hair will appreciate the extra moisture. Deep conditioning is also super important to beat the dryness! Using a moisture-only treatment at least once a week (or twice a week, if your hair feels extra dry) that will give your hair the intensive moisture that it needs. Tip: Apply deep conditioner throughout your hair and cover with a plastic shower cap. Leave in for 30 minutes to one hour and rinse for super soft strands.
USE NATURAL OILS
It is incredibly important to use oils to seal your curls after styling— especially natural oils that mimic what is naturally produced on our scalps. Natural options, such as jojoba oil, coconut oil, or argan oil, are all highly effective in preventing a dry scalp and maintaining healthy, hydrated curls.
2
L.C.O METHOD
The L.C.O Method stands for “Liquid, Cream and Oil.” This is a famous method used by curly girls to hydrate hair. First, moisturize with water or a water-based leave-in conditioner. Follow this with a heavier cream, which will slow down the loss of moisture. Finally, seal it all in with an oil, adding some shine to those curls!
SATIN AND SILK ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS
28
5
One of the rules of maintaining curly hair is to not wash it everyday. Depending on your hair type and level of activity, aim to wash it with shampoo once a week or bi-weekly, and co-wash (washing with conditioner only) in between when needed. Why? Co-washing maintains a high level of moisture in your hair, while shampooing too often will strip oils and moisture, causing extra dryness. Tip: Wash your hair at night and wrap it in a cotton T-shirt before bed. By morning, your hair will be mostly dry.
If you don’t already have a satin or silk pillowcase, then you should definitely make the splurge and invest in one! Sleeping on this smooth, slippery fabric is beneficial for your hair. It will prevent frizz and tangles when you wake up, and won’t suck out the moisture like a cotton pillowcase will.

ocated less than a ten-minute walk from Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus is DreamDry, a salon with the perfect blowout. DreamDry was created by Rachel Zoe with Robin Moraetes. Zoe is a noted designer, stylist and editor, while Moraetes is the former senior executive at Creative Artists Agency where Zoe helped global brands develop with state-of-theart marketing initiatives. I decided to test out the salon in-between my classes one day for the ultimate blowout. The look of the salon is modern with black and white décor throughout the space. I was greeted immediately upon entering and was asked if I would like a beverage as I waited for my hair specialist. I opted for a blowout that would give my hair “volume and curled ends.” After about thirty minutes, I was done and my hair had the perfect mix of volume and movement. Costs around $50, a DreamDry blowout includes a shampoo wash, a scalp massage, and, of course, the perfect blowout. You can also have your hair braided for an extra ten dollars. You can also opt for “express styling,” which is simply a dry shampoo and styling for your locks. A complete list of all the services that DreamDry offers is featured on their website (dreamdry.com). I would highly recommend checking out DreamDry for any occasion, whether it be for a dressy Fordham event, a job interview, or a date!

BEAUTYCON BeautyCon NY is one of the most anticipated conventions for makeup and fashion enthusiasts from across the country. Not only for fans of the latest trends, the convention hosts famous bloggers, vendors, and Youtube stars for a day of panels and meetings. Waiting in line not only creates a sense of excitement, but a camaraderie among others anxious to walk the pink carpet. One fan even ran to the front of the line and began cheering. This excitement helped some more nervous fans to feel more at ease, all while revving up the thrill for the crowd. After being treated to a wrist band and a complimentary tote bag to hold the future influx of free samples, guests are greeted to a carnival-like setup of makeup products, hair accessories, and themed photo booths. While not overly spacious, the room is comfortably large and allows easy access to most of the booths and panels. The showroom is divided into a few sections—mainly hair, makeup, and an area for bloggers and Youtube stars to host their meetings. Not only do vendors have several different products for sale, but they also generously provide free samples (and in creative ways). Some ask guests to spin a wheel, allowing them a chance at their preferred product, while others bribe enthused fans with samples in exchange for a follow on Instagram. My friend and I resolved to visit each station at least once. Most conventions are so crowded that guests are lucky if they reach the front of a few lines, but BeautyCon provides a much easier solution to standing in lines. One quick text to a certain given number activates a program that allows you a virtual stand-in on each line. Once your stand-in has almost “reached the front,” a message alerts you. My friend and I used this feature quite a lot, and it made the experience more enjoyable and spontaneous.
In our time in-between lines for booths, we approached vendors to inquire about their products, and perhaps buy a few as well. While there were well known names like Maybelline on the floor, a majority of vendors represented lesser known companies and brands. The workers at the booths were not only helpful, but very personable and stopped to talk with guests so as to help them select the product they felt was the best fit for the overwhelmed fan. Unfortunately, the layout of the vendors and booths paved the road for quite a bit of chaos. Many of the lines for the booths were so incredibly long that each booth could only be enjoyed once, and the bathroom line was an ever present thought in my head. If one was to wander out of the convention room, for either a snack from the food trucks or a breath of fresh air, they would find it frustratingly difficult to re-enter the showroom. Maps of the floor were not provided and there was one incredibly busy information booth, which did not help the anxiety of fans who were overwhelmed with the crowds of people. Finally, BeautyCon was short of a water sponsor, hence the lack of free water. While separately these shortcomings are not overly annoying, combined they can provide for a hair pulling experience. Overall, BeautyCon NY was a wonderful experience with only a few annoyances scattered throughout the day. The products were affordable and of decent quality, the booths were entertaining, and the people were fun and like-minded.

Are You Being Told Beauty Lies? By Kayleigh Robertson Photo By Kellyn Simpkins
Cutting your hair more often makes it grow faster. Here’s a money saving secret: you actually don’t have to cut your hair that often! Cutting doesn’t make it grow faster, though it can keep it looking healthier. If you’re prone to split ends, cutting it will keep your hair looking healthy and shiny. Otherwise, there’s no reason to trim until you truly want it shorter.
Only people with dry skin should use moisturizer. Pumping your mascara makes for a better application. DON’T DO THIS! Pumping your mascara puts air into the tube, making it dry out quicker. Not only will your mascara not last as long (though you should always throw it out after 3-4 months), but it will be dry and flaky when you go to put it on.
Wearing makeup every day is bad for your skin. Guess what, makeup lovers- it isn’t! It’s bad if you leave makeup on overnight and don’t wash your face after you remove it, but makeup isn’t actually bad for your skin. In fact, since some makeup has sunscreen in it, makeup can even protect your skin from sun damage. Just don’t forget to wash it off later! 32
Nope! If you put moisturizer on oily skin, it can actually help. If you deprive your skin of moisture, then your skin will start working in overtime and produce more oil than you need. If you do have oily skin, try using an oil-free moisturizer.
Eating foods like burgers and fries will make your skin break out. This one is partially true. Although eating junk food technically will not make your skin break out, eating poorly all the time can. This means that indulging yourself every once in awhile is totally fine. So, head on over Urban Kitchen and chow down on those buffalo chicken wraps!
GRADUATING? HERE’S HOW TO HOLD ONTO YOUR S/O
E
very chapter of college brings a new challenge to relationships. Freshman year, you’re probably worried about how to make things work with your high school boyfriend. During upperclassman years, you’re faced with study abroad programs that could put your s/o on the other side of the world. But the hardest challenge comes at the very end of senior year. All while you’re freaking out about graduating and leaving the happiest place on earth (Fordham, obviously,
By Rachel Morales not Disney), you might think about your relationship and wonder, “Wait—how the hell are we going to make this work after we leave?” Graduating and entering the “real world” is scary enough, so before that happens, take a minute to think about how your s/o will fit into your post-grad life. Every relationship is different, but here are a few situations you might find yourself in once graduation rolls around.
1. What if they have post-grad plans and you don’t?
When your s/o has a job offer and you don’t even know what you’re having for dinner that night, it can take a toll on your self-esteem and confidence. It’s always easier said than done, but being patient is the key to holding onto your relationship when you’ve yet to make your own post-grad plans. We’re all different, so why compare yourself to the successes of your partner? If they truly love you then they’ll stand by you whether you’re working at a Fortune 500 or TGI-Fridays.
2. What if neither of you have post-grad plans?
There’s no shame if neither of you have plans for work or grad school yet. But be careful if you find yourself in this situation. It’s easy to put on your “love blinders” and make all your decisions revolve around the person you love. While you should listen to your partner’s opinions, make sure that you’re putting your best interests first when you eventually decide.
3. What happens if your post-grad plans force you apart from your s/o?
All long-distance relationships have challenges but luckily, they’re not impossible. FaceTime, red-eye flights, and constant Snapchat sprees all make LDRs a little easier. If that’s not enough for you, remember this: you’ve graduated! You’re officially a grown up (that’s what the diploma means, right?) and this is the time in your life to make your own decisions. So if you want to move in with your s/o, what’s stopping you? Graduating and starting your young-adult life comes with its fair share of challenges, but at least a 3:00 am curfew isn’t one of them. 33

omance ranges: heart-wrenching passion to sweet lingering smiles. Dates to go along with these levels of intensity must be paired accordingly. Are you completely committed or carelessly casual? Here are some perfect date ideas to go with your relationship’s level of seriousness.
The Start of Something New:
To quote Troy Bolton himself, “This could be the start of something new.” Keep things as simple as possible; you don’t want to seem overeager. A walk over to Arthur Ave to grab sandwiches at Tino’s or shakes at Simon’s is perfectly informal but fun.
In Limbo:
This is going somewhere. You’re not sure where it’s going or when it’s going to get there, but you know that it’s something. A perfect middle ground would be to spend a day in the city—grab lunch and make your way over to a crepe truck! This keeps it casual while still showing some effort.
Going Steady:
You’re serious—in this for the long haul. An environment of intimacy and romance is exactly what the doctor ordered. Try travelling into Manhattan for a night out. Go to a sit-down restaurant whether it be in Soho, Little Italy, or Midtown. Follow dessert with a latenight stroll guided by the light of the hundreds of skyscrapers. The romantic nighttime setting of NYC guarantees to give you the perfect night for you and your love.
Soulmates:
You’re in deep. Head over heels. Found the love of a lifetime. This calls for creativity and originality; a personal touch will show your significant other you truly care. Think of something that specifically caters to his or her interest. Every time your partner mentions something he or she would like to see, write it down in a notes page on your phone. The fact you picked up on such minute details will truly touch your S.O.’s heart. Your Results:

How to Survive a Long Distance Relationship By Christina Avianto Last year, I experienced a long distance relationship for the first time with my boyfriend of two years. Trying to make a long distance relationship last was definitely a challenge, but neither of us wanted to give up. Before starting my freshman year of college, we initially thought that an open relationship would be best. While this seemed ideal—go out, have fun, not worry about one another, and still have a boyfriend to eventually come back home to—I could not see this as a reality for me. My boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to pursue a long distance relationship because we believed that we could make it work. Long distance relationships can be exactly what you need to make it through college. These are some tips I have for making your relationship as strong as ever. Make sure to call (not text!) when you have free time. It is so comforting to hear a real voice rather than just reading a text message. Snapchat each other throughout the day! Sending pictures and videos makes messaging more intimate. This creates reassurance because you can see what your partner sees. FaceTime is key. Try to FaceTime with each other at least once a day. Send each other your class schedules so you know when you both are free or busy. Try to visit as soon as possible. As soon as you see your SO’s surroundings, you are able to feel more connected and comfortable. Share something in common. Watch a Netflix show together or find a hobby you both enjoy. Our favorites are The Office, Arrested Development, and Big Brother. Send gifts or care packages. Whenever I’m thinking about my boyfriend, I’ll send him an Edible Arrangement or something that he wants from Amazon. Keep yourself busy! When I found myself missing my boyfriend, I thought it was most helpful to find activities that I love to do in order to stay occupied. Work out. Try a yoga, barre, or spin class that you haven’t taken yet. Join clubs and find something you are passionate about. Explore the city and your campus.
It’s not always easy, but maintaining a long distance relationship in college is possible. As long as both of you are committed and dedicated, everything will work out. If you can survive the distance, you can survive anything! 35
