When Giovanni Palombo in the spring of 1897 opened a small pasticceria – pastry shop – in a little town called Esperia, about fifty miles south of Rome, he certainly had no idea that what he began would outlast two World Wars, the Titanic, the Great Depression, the Beatles, the Russian Revolution, the Dodgers, and Ebbets Field. Today Palombo Pastry Shops are located in four beautiful locations and proudly offer over 117 years of uninterrupted tradition in the making of the finest dulciary and gelato products. Sweets prepared at Palombo’s continue to flow with a special luster of distinction and creativity joined by one common thread: Quality!! Editor’s Letter Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion exists in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening. - Coco Chanel

If you asked me what I would be doing at this point in my college career a few years ago the only thing I could tell you is that it definitely would not be this. I think we all come into college either not having the slightest idea of what we are doing with our lives or thinking we know exactly what we want to be when we grow up…and for some that holds true. For me…not so much. For those of you who don’t know me, I came to Fordham thinking I was set to be an art-therapist, and for a while I thought that was exactly what I would be doing “when I grew up” until I stumbled upon a table at the Fall club fair my Sophomore year. I was stopped by a group of incredibly enthusiastic girls telling me all about their club and why I should join. Just as I was about to give them a very polite “That’s okay..” because I was too shy and didn’t think I’d be any good at it, a close friend of mine I happened to be with said, “That seems right up your ally. You should do it.” I really need to thank him, because that table was none other than Mode Magazine’s and those girls came to be some of the sweetest and most talented people I’ve come to know, miss and admire during my time so far at Fordham.

Much like my story our cover for this year’s issue, the talented and charming, Peter Hulbert, came into Fordham not knowing where he would end up but determined to find out. When I initially asked just a few friends about what I was looking for in a student to feature for our cover, without thinking they replied… ”Peter, you’re looking for Peter.” Whether you know Peter from Fordham’s all male a capella group, The Ramblers, riding his homemade skateboards around campus, or as your very own RA, I think we can all see a little bit of ourselves in Peter as well as being inspired to do something more. Peter is a self-proclaimed “idea-man” and there’s no doubting that he is. From making his own skateboards, to creating and selling his own leather goods, to applying for any internship he feels a connection with, Peter is full force into pursuing his dream of bringing his ideas into the Fashion world. As the year comes to a close, we really wanted to showcase our time at Fordham in terms of falling into what we love as well as pursuing it. In this issue I hope you find some inspiration. Whether that be joining the club you’ve been considering, discovering the dream job you were made for, or just finding your best new looks to celebrate the beautiful Spring weather, this issue has a little something for everybody. Get out there and fall into something you love!

AWESOMENESS The breakdown of personal branding By Caroline Sneider

“You attract the right things when you have a sense of who you are.” –Amy Poehlr

DRESSING YOUR BODY

BY EMILY ABBY

FOR

APPLE Women that are flaunting the apple body shape normally have a larger bust, broader shoulders, and narrower hips. These girls carry most of their weight above the hips, whereas their legs and arms remain slimmer. A good way to dress this body type is to draw attention away from the midsection and emphasize your other assets! This can be done best by elongating your torso and showing off your legs! What to Wear • Flowy tops and draped blouses to de-emphasize your midsection • V-Neck tops to elongate torso • Empire-Waist tops to camouflage stomach • Structured jackets to draw angles • Straight leg or bootcut pants • Skirts with hemlines above the knee Tips • Stick to solid colors and stray away from attention-drawing patterns • Focus on clothes with weighty fabrics that have natural structure Celebrities that share your shape: Jennifer Hudson, Jessica Simpson, and Drew Barrymore.

HOURGLASS Women that are turning heads with the hourglass shape have shoulders and hips that are similar in proportion, complemented by a slimmer waist. With a body like this, the trick is to elegantly showcase your curves without overdoing it. Your figure has a natural allure, so embrace your silhouette! What to Wear • Fitted and wrap dresses to enhance curves • Belts to complement your waist • Pencil skirts below the knee • Bootleg or skinny jeans Tips • Wear lightweight fabrics that cling to you natural curves • Try to avoid baggy clothing that hides your body Celebrities that share your shape: Beyoncé, Scarlett Johansson, and Sofia Vergara

Whether it’s that cropped wrap blouse or the yellow drop-back halter dress, everyone has that one outfit that makes their confidence levels soar. So what’s the secret? Why are you rocking one outfit and flopping in another? It’s all about shape. Throw away those preconceived ideas about height and weight and focus on your body type. While all of us are different and unique, there are four general body types that we can be categorized into: Apple, Rectangle, Pear, and Hourglass. Once you’ve distinguished which body type is most similar to your own, follow our guide to get the best look for your shape!

RECTANGle Ladies that are rocking the rectangular body shape, or an athletic build, are known to have the same proportions at the shoulders, hips, and waist. Women with this body type are normally on the slimmer side, so the best way to dress this body type is choosing clothes that soften your body and create the illusion of curves. Draw attention to your waist and show off your strong arms and legs! What to Wear • Tops with collars or ruffles to flatter your chest • Dresses that cinch at the waist • Belts to accentuate your waist and create curves • High-waisted pants to highlight your waist • Wide-leg trousers to add volume to lower body Tips • Layer clothes to add more dimension • Light fabrics with natural draping to add movement • Avoid square and straight-lined shirts Celebrities that share your shape: Hayden Panettiere, Cameron Diaz, and Hilary Duff

PEAR Girls that are working the pear shape have a figure where their lower body is wider than their upper, with a well-defined waist and bottom. Adding volume to your upper body and minimizing your hips is the best way to dress this body type! What to Wear • Colorful or embellished tops to draw the eyes up • Strapless dresses to show off shoulders • Boat neck or square necklines • Semi-cropped jackets • A-line skirts to slim hips • Wide-legged pants to balance hips Tips • Aim for dark colors on your lower half • Layer tops to balance out your shape Celebrities that share your shape: Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, and Jennifer Lopez

Although shopping and dressing for your body type can help you accentuate your body’s best features, it’s all about being happy and confident. The only thing that matters is how you feel in your clothes, so wear what makes you feel comfortable and flaunt it! Photos via topshop.com and netaporter.com

Strengthen Your Muscles (And Your Mind) Left foot planted firmly on the ground,

right foot pressed into my left thigh, and hands raised high above my head, sweat pours off my body as I hold the tree pose. I can feel my pulse beating as I stand in the heated studio, listening to the sound of synchronized breathing all around me. I can feel my muscles straining to hold my balance. Yet at the same time, I feel invigorated, empowered and inspired. How can I, immersed in my own sweat inside a sauna akin to a tropical desert, find a sense of tranquility and vitality? For 60 minutes, I let the heat and sweat wash over me. I allow myself to forget everything else in my life—my worries, my stresses, and my agenda. Instead, I focus on myself. On being present. On connecting my body with my mind. While yoga alone boasts healing properties as well as the potential to find an innate tranquility, hot yoga offers the added benefit of detoxifying the body. The heavy sweating (which starts immediately upon entering the studio) flushes toxins from within the skin. It enables the body to experience a therapeutic and deeper stretch. The high temperatures allow blood vessels to expand, improving circulation and warming up dormant muscles. Exercising in a heat-

By Erika Schwartz

ed room elevates the heart rate and speeds up the metabolism, requiring the body to work even harder than it normally would. The heat prompts you to focus on your breathing, which delivers a rich supply of oxygen to the muscles and pushes you far beyond your comfort zone. Still not convinced that hot yoga is a viable substitute for the gym? Research shows that as you move through yogic postures that engage and contract the muscles all whilst exercising in a hot room, the heart works identically to how it would if you were running a mile. The way in which the internal organs are stretched and compressed stimulates the metabolism, allowing the body to burn calories faster post-workout. So the next time you are looking to change up your exercise routine, consider giving hot yoga a shot. Oh, and remember to embrace the sweat! For just $5, Yoga to the People offers an hour-long hot vinyasa yoga session in downtown Manhattan. The organization provides its participants with an affordable way to strengthen and stretch their bodies while destressing their minds. It also offers guests an unmatched experience that is sure to lure them back.

A weekend well spent brings a week of content. There’s nothing better than enjoying good food in good company. New York City is crazy about brunch with options around ever y corner, some prompting mile long guest lists and pricy menus (think Gossip Girl). However, what’s behind this craze is the acclaimed establishments ser ving up some of the most delicious breakfast and lunch options in the world. Brunch is a time to catch up with friends, plus the food is sure to be Instagram-worthy. Here are three delicious, ideal brunch spots for the busy college student. The dining area is cute, but quite small, so you’ll most likely end up sitting next to a stranger at one of the communal tables.

ETHNIC FOOD

FROZEN TREATS

My weakness? Ethnic food. Like all college kids, I’m at that stage in my life where I’m tr ying new things left and right. Listed below are the best ethnic restaurants I’ve found and fallen in love with. We’re all to some degree broke college students, so this list has the best stuff in Manhattan for UNDER $10! Whether you’re a meat eater or you’ve gone veggie, here are the best ethnic places that won’t break the bank!

We’ve made it through the snow and cold but can we make it through the brutal summer heat? While the prospect of summer is exciting, there are days when the heat can be too much to handle. So why not retreat with a frozen treat? Here are my top 3 picks for a tasty summer cool-off:

BY LISA CALCASOLA

Minar I may be a little biased because Indian food is my favorite, but this place will not disappoint! Tr y the masala dosa, a HUGE pancake-like wrap with potatoes inside, ser ved with coconut chutney and sambar (a spicy soup-like liquid) on the side. Milnar is super casual and operates as a grab-and-go shop. Located at: 160 East 44th St BaoHaus Heard of that new ABC Family sitcom Fresh Off the Boat ? It was inspired by memoirist/chef /T V personality Eddie Huang, whose one and only restaurant is located in downtown Manhattan near Union Square. BaoHaus offers streetstyle Taiwanese fast food for under $5, the most popular being the Chairman Bao. They’re open till 4 AM and have a chill, hip-hop vibe. Located at: 238 E 14th St Café Himalaya This café is one of the only places I’ve found that has authentic momos (think dumplings, but better!) as well as the BEST chai tea!

BY JASMINE TING

Big Gay Ice Cream The name says it all. From toppings and colorful sprinkles galore to unique flavors with names like Salty Pimp and The Gobbler, any ice cream creation made here is bound to be interesting. Big Gay Ice Cream’s store and ice cream trucks have been ser ving-up New York favorites since 2009. Located at: 125 E 7th St; 61 Grove St Momofoku Milkbar Momofoku Milkbar is home to the Cereal Milk soft ser ve – a tasty treat sure to delight your taste buds. This frozen goodie tastes just like the classic breakfast: corn flakes, milk, and all! Located at: 72 Wooster Street; 251 E 13th Street; 15 W 56th Street; 561 Columbus Ave, at 87th Street; 382 Metropolitan Ave, Brooklyn; 360 Smith Street, Brooklyn L’Arte del Gelato Cooling off is easy with L’Arte del Gelato, which is just a short walk from the Fordham Lincoln Center campus. Whether you’re up for luscious gelato or tang y yogurt, the L’Arte del Gelato cart is ready to please. One of the more unusual, yet popular flavors is the Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Located at: Chelsea Market, 75 9th Ave; Lincoln Center Plaza, Columbus Ave & 63rd St; High Line, 10th Ave & 25th St

Whether you’re looking to spend quality time with family, friends, a date or co-workers, a picnic is great for all ages and walks of life.

When Your S/O Comes to Town… By Emily McFadden

When you have a significant other who goes to school in a different state, occasional visits become a vital part of your relationship. Whether he or she studies in California or a few miles away in Connecticut, your S/O will definitely want to come see you (and the Big Apple) before the end of the semester. With only one or two days to spend together, it’s crucial that you make some plans so you make the most of your time together in NYC. Seem like a lot of pressure? Don’t worry, we’ve got some ideas for your itinerary!

1. Museums: They’re not just for high school field trips anymore! New York City has a museum for pretty much every interest; history, art, television, you name it. When you go to a museum with your S/O, everything seems a little more fun! Wander around without a map and you’ll be surprised at what you see. You can take pictures of one another posing like the statues, or make up stories about the people in paintings or the artists who made them. Search the Museum of Natural History for as many Night at the Museum references as you can find. Last November, my boyfriend and I spent much of one trip trying to find the talking Easter Island head. No matter where you end up or what you find, you’ll make memories and maybe even learn something!

2. Parks Between all the shops, restaurants, and theaters that attract most tourists, many forget that NYC has a lot of green areas where you and your S/O can relax in the spring. There’s always the hugely popular Central Park, but I personally prefer Bryant Park. Not only is it adorable in the winter when the shops and ice rink take over, but it’s also great to visit in the spring and summer under the sun. There are games to play, places to grab a bite, and lots of space to stretch out and talk about everything that has happened since the last time you saw each other. Check the calendar on bryantpark.org to see if anything fun is planned during your visit. Laying in the grass and watching a movie during the Summer Film Festival at the park is a must. And if your S/O wants to spend the day a little closer to Fordham, don’t forget about the Botanical Gardens!

3. Arthur Avenue After a long day of walking around the city, what’s better than a romantic Italian dinner made and served by the residents of Little Italy itself? Chow down on homemade pasta, lasagna, and warm garlic bread to fulfill those foodie cravings. I am currently attempting to find the best penne vodka on Arthur, and I highly suggest Emilia’s. Then, head over to your favorite bakery, like Palombo’s or Madonia, to get some dessert and a coffee. Before you leave don’t forget to snag some sweets that your S/O can snack on on his or her trip home. I can’t think of a more perfect way to end any Fordham visit, especially with someone you love!

Re-Entering a Relationship

B

y the time you arrive to college, you will have most likely been in a relationship or two. But life happens, and not all relationships are as stable as you’d like them to be. Before you know it, you and your boyfriend " $ $ & $ " # $ $ & " " $ ! & $ wanting to re-commit to a relationship of the past, here are a few questions you should ask yourself:

Are you both at the same points in life? This is a pretty general question, but it’s one of the most important. When my high school boyfriend went off to college while I was still a junior in high school, our relationship fell apart faster than he could shotgun a beer. Even though we were only 15 minutes apart, we were at polar opposite places in our lives. While I was studying for the SAT, he was pledging to a frat. Being in complementary stages of your life is essential to a $ & $ going through another tough break up.

Do you love yourself? While I hate to sound like a Hallmark card, this clichĂŠ is popular for a reason: it is important as hell. Figure out whether or not you long for a serious relationship, $ " & ! $ & % $ ! ! yourself to someone else. However, learning to love each and every facet of yourself, both the good and bad, is one of the most important things you can do. Before re-entering a relationship, make sure your self-worth is 15 coming from yourself and not from your S/O.

HOMEMADE BEAUTY: If you walk into the beauty section of any drugstore or department store, you will find a multitude of expensive products that promise smooth skin, a radiant glow, or healthier locks. However, what you may not know is that many of these products contain harmful ingredients such as parabens (which prevent bacteria), synthetic colors, and fragrances. All of these additives can irritate skin and cause other potential problems. In response, companies have developed all-natural products, but these often expire quickly and are rather expensive. Creating your own skin and hair products using simple natural ingredients can provide an easy alternative. Check out these dorm-approved DIY spa treatments that contain natural, edible ingredients rich in vitamins and healing properties. Grab some friends and treat yourselves to a spa and movie night!

Not only am I assigned mentors, but the program required me to complete online training in preparation to run my own business. Since being apart of the GEM program I have learned networking, marketing and business partnership skills. The company truly helps give back to the community. I even get to learn about the jewelry itself. Below are four of some of my favorite Chloe and Isabel pieces.

These Crystal Pavé Hoop Earrings are great with any outfit, day or night! They are appropriate for an office daytime look or for a more sophisticated evening wear. They have an exquisite shape and are inlaid with clear czech crystals. Believe it or not the price is only $52!

aking up at the crack of dawn to wash my hair and then blast it with 1,800 watts of heat has been a part of my morning routine since middle school. I’ve tried every product on the market—from blowdryers and brushes to styling products and clips—to perfect my blow out, and it seems that I’ve finally got it down to a science. But there was a lot of trial and error! Try these tips and tricks to create a flawless blowout and still make it to class on time! PROTECTION: There is nothing worse than brittle, heat-damaged hair as a result

of the wear and tear of frequent blow drying. To prevent this from happening, it is absolutely essential that you prep your hair! Start with shampoo and conditioner. I recommend Pantene’s Repair and Protect shampoo and conditioner, but if you like to stay brand-loyal, most brands have their own line of repair and protection products. I also combat the heat by using Dove’s Thermal Replenishment Spray. Just a few sprays on your wet hair and you’re good to go!

while others opt for the cheaper Conair ones. Both will get the job done, it’s just a matter of your own needs (shorter drying time, decreased frizz, etc). No matter what, I look for dryers with Ionic technology, multiple heat settings, and a concentrator attachment that allows you to direct the heat more precisely.

TOOLS: The blow dryer you use is really up to personal preference. Some people spend upwards of $200 on their dryers,

Invest in this round brush. It will CHANGE YOUR LIFE. After buying one last year, it not only decreased the time

it took me to blow dry my hair, but also left me with smoother, frizz-free results. It takes a few tries to get familiar with the brush, but once you do you will never go back. It works like magic! Just ask one of my hall mates, whose naturally curly hair I transformed into sleek and straight with just my brush and blowdryer— no flatiron required! Sephora Collection Hold it Together Blow Dry Clips (Sephora, $10)

The best way to cut down on time when blow drying your hair is by sectioning your hair. Watch out though, because sectioning can create annoying creases. In order to

combat this, I suggest using blow-dry clips like these ones from Sephora. You can get similar ones for less money at drugstores like Walgreens or CVS! BLOW DRY: Before you section your hair, start blow drying without a brush by using only your hands to decrease moisture. After a few minutes, section it and and continue to blow dry in layers. Always direct the heat downwards. If you want a straight blow dry, pull the round brush straight through the ends of your hair; if you want to curl the ends, roll the brush under. Dry Bar Buttercup Blowdryer (Sephora, $195)

SET: Once your hair is dry, set your hair by blasting it with cold air. Use a finishing product like Bed Head’s After Party Cream to keep frizz at bay, or simply spritz a light mist of hairspray so your perfect locks will hold all day!

Summer Concerts for All Budgets By Jessica Doughty

As the warm weather rolls in, so do the tour buses. Spring and summer are great times for new experiences, including attending concerts. Coachella, one of the biggest music festivals in the world, kicked off festival season this year with around 190 acts and featured notable artists such as ACDC, Jack White, and The Weeknd. Similar festivals occur across the United States all summer long; The Governors Ball in New York, Bonnaroo in Tennessee, Firefly in Delaware, and Lollapalooza in Chicago are just a few that draw heavy crowds. People from all over the country flock to campsites, parks, and waterside stages to watch their favorite artists in action. These festivals allow attendees to get lost in music and escape reality by bringing together thousands of people, if only for a short weekend. The one downfall to these concerts is the price. One weekend pass can cost around $250, and if you decide to splurge on VIP tickets, they can cost around $600. Because of this, many people, especially college students on a budget, are deterred from such festivals. But that doesn’t mean that you have to skip out on concerts this summer. During the summer there are many free concerts in local parks and venues. In Manhattan, news shows such as Good Morning America and the Today Show host summer concert series. Every Friday, audience members can attend a free show, from artists such as Paramore, Kings of Leon, and Florida Georgia Line. Madison Square Park holds a variety of free performances throughout the week while the Hudson River Park holds free concerts from local artists every Friday night. Although these concerts may not feature 190 acts, you won’t be able to tell the difference once the music starts to play! Not only do you get to experience the same atmosphere as a that, but you get to escape from reality for free. If you have to skip a festival this year or if you are looking for some new options, keep your eyes peeled for different opportunities featured on local news and social media.

1. Be a “groupie.” While festivals are a place to let loose and have fun, you never know exactly who the people around you are. Travel in groups, or at least in pairs, so that someone always has your back. Which leads me to. . . 2. Have your friends’ backs. It’s important to remember that strangers aren’t the only potential danger you may face. If someone you are with seems sick (whether it be a result of drinking, dehydration, or anything else) don’t let the fear of getting in trouble prevent you from helping a friend out. 3. Be sure that you can take the heat. While time may fly as you listen to your favorite bands, keep in mind that festivals span days and that most of your time will be spent out in the sun. Prevent sunburn and dehydration by applying sunscreen and drinking water regularly. 4. Hold that cup like alcohol. Alcoholic or not, any beverage has the ability to be spiked. Only drink from containers that you filled yourself or that you watched get filled, and never leave your drink unattended. 5. Watch your stuff. To avoid theft, keep your belongings in your sight at all times. Carry cash (not credit or debit cards) and try to leave valuables at home.

Everything starts with a simple idea, and here at Fordham we love to showcase and support the ideas of our own friends, but I wanted to introduce Fordham to one of your neighbors on campus that you may not know. I had the opportunity to sit down with Peter Hulbert, the self-proclaimed “Idea Man.” I wanted to showcase someone at Fordham who has endless ideas and has already started to put them into motion.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

What specifically do you want to be involved in in terms of fashion?

I’m from San Diego, California, born and raised. I hadn’t been to the East Coast until my junior year of high school when I visited Fordham. I fell in love when I got here, I knew I just had to be here, and that’s kind of how I ended up here. I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I got here, but I came in knowing that I was going to find what I was going to do here, that was the goal. I spent some time just doing whatever and going with it, probably last year, maybe late first semester, but probably really second semester sophomore year for me I really fell into the idea that I really wanted to go into fashion. It’s something I have been interested in for a long time, but I just sort of realized that I could do this and I could really like it and this could be sweet!

It’s through the support that I’ve come to realize, “I can really do this”

So… the dream… I’m gonna tell you the dream and then we can work backwards from there. The dream is to work with designers. I’m not a designer myself I have no technical skills. I’d love to have them I just haven’t found the time or the money to do it. I’d love to work with designers because I feel like I have a lot of ideas and that’s what I’m good at, I’m good at ideas. I’m an idea man! I’d love to work with somebody who can take that and translate it into a Describe your own personal style. design. I love men’s fashion that’s where I’m drawn to as far as a Man…well first, I don’t own any black clothes. This cuff, the pants cuff career. I’d love to go into men’s wear working with cool people, started the end of last year. I think end of spring semester last year. I talented people and do collaborations. don’t know why, that’s just something a lot of people know me for is Have any experiences at Fordham led you the socks and the pants cuff. I didn’t do it expecting attention I did it I honestly just don’t like the way pants look all the way down, to realize what you wanted to do, like you because it really bugs me. I think this is just a cleaner line even though said, during sophomore year? convention would tell you it’s not. I guess if I was going to sum it up There was no event that happened at Fordham that I was like, generally my style is definitely laid back influenced by southern “Alright I gotta’ do fashion,” you know, probably more so being California, but also more tailored than southern California, not as around it. Being in the city, has definitely influenced just the way I relaxed. I do the same at home and at school, I’d wear this outfit at look at things, the way I dress for sure, and kind of thinking about home and here, but my style has changed definitely since I’ve come to that as an avenue. I’d say more than anything it’s just being around New York. My tailoring comes mostly from British ideas because people who are great friends and supportive people and Fordham everything’s a little shorter and snugger than American stuff. Collars has a lot of those, if you can find them, you can find them in your are usually buttoned up…even though mine’s not right now, I’m a little little niche. I’ve found them in Ramblers, I’ve found them in other off my game. I really love British fashion it’s definitely something I take RA’s and in other places too. It’s through the positive support, I have inspiration from. The California stuff is just kind of in me and then I pull the ideas I just need to bounce it off somebody first and it’s through from other things. And of course I’ve gone through a couple the support that I’ve come to realize “I can really do this,” and they’re phases…weird phases, but where I am now I’m comfortable with and I like you know, you probably could, you should go for it, give it a shot. could see my self doing this for a while.

Is fashion your main interest, or do you have side endeavors other than fashion?

Fashion is definitely my main interest. But along with that, and maybe one of the main reasons I love fashion, that I want to make fashion and design fashion, is because I really like making things that have a purpose and using them for that purpose. A lot of things in here (his room) are things I’ve made; the lights and the skateboard behind me are a few.

Tell us about the projects you have worked on/ are working on now.

First are the skateboards. The wood in here came from a Fordham bookshelf… they kindly donated to the cause. It’s completely started from scratch. I already had the trucks and the wheels from other boards I’ve had at home. That one broke (see image), it was a sad day when it broke. It wasn’t a bad feeling though it was the first day I broke it and I don’t want to brag but I rode it hard. I was so pumped I was jamming out to Led Zeppelin and I was going crazy and loving it and I was just finished with this session or whatever you want to call it and I jumped on it and landed in a bad spot. The board didn’t have a lot of flex, you know, the wood is definitely flawed, it’s not the right kind of wood for that and it just snapped right in the middle. I fell forward, fell on my hands, got up, and I thought you know what…It worked…it rode and I was so excited about it, it didn’t really bum me out as much as I would have expected because it rode and it was a great ride and I was like…I’m gonna’ make more. These other pieces of wood right here are going to be two skateboards. That’s such a cool perspective to take into fashion: practicality and usefulness of things. And using them for their purpose, it’s just such a neat feeling to me. Usually you make a product and you sell it for a certain dollar amount that’s alienating yourself that’s in that product from you and this is the opposite I make something for me and I use it like a total unison of self, product and person. It’s such a neat thing. So this is my latest thing. For a while I was doing a lot of leather stuff. This is a laptop case, I only made one and it’s for me and I love it, I really love it. I make wallets as well. The first wallet I made is made of a lot of scrap pieces so it’s the junky one and I’ve sold some nicer ones that were cleaner just face to face with people right now. My latest project that I haven’t finished yet is a little notebook. I found the need for one just to write stuff down, and rather than buying one I thought, you know what, I can make one, so I made this I just need to cut paper out in the right size and then stitch it. That’s the next step.

Do you do all of this in here (his room)? Yea mostly here. I’ve got a lot of tools hidden in here.

Like many people in the fashion world, you have a blog. What made you start your blog?

So my blog is so meager, but it’s a portfolio. All these things I make are a part of me and I needed a way to put that into a resume because otherwise I felt like people would just miss that. That’s the reason why I invited you guys here instead of somewhere else, because there’s a lot of me here. So I talked to some people and I realized okay, I should do a blog.

You touched o n being a part of the Ramblers. Can you tell us a little ab out that?

Oh man, there’s a lot to tell. I had thought about auditioning freshman year, and that’s how I was with everything. I thought about playing rugby, I thought about joining crew, I thought about joining Ramblers, and I didn’t do any of them. I enjoyed freshman year, and I think that was the best decision, I settled in and then sophomore year I was like, “I’m gonna’ do it.” I had some close friends who were like do it, audition. So I auditioned for Ramblers sophomore year. I had a blast with the audition, but there was a question on the audition sheet “Why do you want to be in the ramblers?” and I said well, one, I love to sing. It’s something I’ve done my whole life, it means a lot, and I want to keep singing. Two, I’m looking for a really good group of guy friends. But because I have bad handwriting, Alex was reading it and says, “You’re looking for a group of gay friends?” and I said, “I mean sure, but I wrote guy friends.” I ended up getting both out of the Ramblers. I really have found a great group of guys that I was lacking freshman year and these were a solid group of supportive and like-minded people. They’re just really talented people and smart guys of all different types. We’re unique among a capella groups, not only at Fordham, but at other places we’ve encountered in that only one of us is a music major. The rest of us are just doing a bunch of different things and we just love to sing. Also, we’re really goofy. Whenever we compete it’s really funny because the other groups are super intense and give us death stairs and then we’re like we’re just here to sing and to party, but we do ok with it you know, we’re not terrible. And that’s what we want to come through, we don’t take it too seriously, a capella is like a weird thing it’s kind of goofy and we try to have fun with it. But it’s totally shaped my time at Fordham. Really almost all my friends are ramblers and then I have some people over here and here but the ramblers are my Fordham experience, or at least 80% of it. I’d say it has opened up so many avenues for me that I would have never imagined. We were invited to sing at the Waldorf by the Parker institute which is a Jewish medical research institute and one lady was like, “Hey my daughter goes to Fordham and said we needed the Ramblers.” and that was it. It was super cool and they were great people. We’ve done a bunch of weird things too. So many things I never would have imagined I would be doing in college, and I’m so happy I am.

Do you give th e other ramblers fashion ad vice?

Oh my God. I do. Well often they come and ask me, so we’ll start with me bragging about it… they do come and ask me. I remember Dean he was like “Peter, should I cut my hair or should I grow it out.” He’ll ask me like once a week, “How do you like my hair?” They’ve called me The Hair at times actually. When I auditioned, and I know this because now I’ve done the other side of the audition process, you don’t remember everybody’s name so you have to write something down about them and many of them wrote “The Hair.” So that’s like an inside thing I try not to talk about too much. I do offer some fashion advice when it’s required. I try not to be too snobby about it. The biggest tension with that is when we have to perform somewhere and the question is, “What should we wear?” Sigh** And then I get a little fired up when people aren’t on the same page as me. And I’m like uhhh I really don’t want to wear black…no black is really a thing so there I’m biased in that I don’t want to buy more clothes. Or if… Like one time we were talking about wearing a black jacket and khaki pants and black shoes and I was like…..why? That doesn’t even look good. That’s your idea of what we should be wearing, but if you just thought about it you know that doesn’t look good. We could easily change that to a blue jacket, khaki pants and brown shoes and it would look so much better. And sometimes they listen…I do my best. There hasn’t been a decision that was made that I was super against. Usually we arrive at a happy medium where I can get over it. And then sometimes I break the rules if I’m not happy with what they’ve chosen. I’ll change it up a bit. It means more to me than I think it means to some of them and they get that. I’m not asking them to care as much.

It has opened up so many avenues for me that I would have never imagined.

Have you do ne any other events or ch arities with the Ramblers?

Last semester we did a fundraiser for a charity called Friends of Jaclyn, which is an organization that helps children with cancer. That was something we tried to do more than we actually ended up doing. We wanted to adopt a girl…not like adopt, but you can sponsor, that’s the right word, you can sponsor a patient. So we were trying to sponsor a girl and it just didn’t come through. So what we ended up doing was asking for donations at our concerts. All of our concerts are free so we asked for a donation and all of that went to Friends of Jaclyn. That’s one thing that I think we could do more of moving forward. Especially since our shows are free, we could turn each one into a donation. I think that would be really cool. One of the coolest things we do is just hanging out with the groups at other schools. Each semester we go on “tours.” As the events coordinator I kind of handle that. There are two different kinds of tours. Fall tour is one weekend in the fall, so its Friday, Saturday, Sundany, and we come back Sunday evening. What we do is we usually go to two schools. We find somewhere kind of far-ish, not too far maybe three or four hours and we drive. Last year we went to Rutgers and then Delaware, this year we went to Syracuse and Smith College, in Massachusetts. And that’s always a blast we stay with groups at other schools and hang out and party with them. The spring tour is different; it’s a little less official.
