Islamic Relief prepares for Qurbani 2012 Fahd Waggie
“We lost our father three years ago and the day of Eid-ul-Adha has become a sad day for us… [But] Islamic Relief’s generous Qurbani meat donation last year, really lifted our spirits.”
T
hese are the words of Tafelsig resident, Shahied Jacobs, who is just one beneficiary from Islamic Relief’s Orphaned and Child Welfare programme, who benefitted from the humanitarian relief organisation’s 2011 Qurbani campaign. Qurbani is an important rite for Muslims commemorating the sacrifice performed by Prophet Abraham/Ibrahim, who was asked by Allah (swt) to sacrifice his own son. When Prophet Ibrahim passed Allah’s test, his son was spared and replaced with a ram. As the world’s largest, independent Muslim humanitarian organisation, Islamic Relief began its’ Qurbani implementation campaign in 1986 with only 670 animals. This number has grown considerably over the years, to more than 120,000 Qurbani which feeds more than 3.5million people in over 27 countries worldwide. This year, IR’s South African office aims to broaden its campaign to include vulnerable families in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Somalia, Palestine and Afghanistan. Country Director, Ismat
Lenasia Imam Murdered L
enasia residents were once again rocked by spiralling crime in the area with the news of the senseless murder of an Imam recently. Moulana Mohammed Iqbal Hassen, 37, was murdered in the early hours of Sunday 23 September 2012 at his home. It is understood that four robbers broke into the Moulana’s house and separated his wife and children into different rooms. The robbers
Mahomed explains: “We tend to distribute the Qurbani meat to a diverse range of beneficiaries i.e. widows, orphans, the aged, to those affected by famine and political turmoil. We distribute freshly slaughtered meat – procured locally – to poor and vulnerable families.” Mahomed appealed to the community, who intends to participate in the rite, to choose Islamic Relief South Africa to administer their Qurbani. “With more than 40 offices established across the globe, Islamic Relief has the capacity to implement a successful Qurbani campaign. “Our South African office is implementing Qurbani operations in Malawi at only R350 per goat, Zimbabwe from R350 per goat or locally for R1,200 per sheep/Angora. We also have prices available for other countries including India, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya and Chad. Prices include slaughtering, packing and distribution.” All general contributions (Lillah/Sadaqah/ General) can be deposited into Standard Bank, Islamic Relief SA, 005318459, Fordsburg Branch/ 005205, Ref: Contact Number A detailed list of Qurbani prices and countries is available from your regional Islamic Relief office or call the call centre on 0800 111 898. demanded money and jewellery. According to reports, the Moulana was stabbed in the head and heart when he attempted to protect his family. Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said: “The rest of the family were not hurt. They took some electrical appliances and a small sum of money.” It is believed that the robbers dropped some of the stolen goods when they saw a police car that was heading to the scene. Moulana Hassen was described by residents of the area as a popular, quiet and peace loving person. He was buried the same day at the Avalon Kabrestan in Lenasia in what was described as one of the largest funerals in Lenasia. He is survived by his wife and four children. Police said that they are following up all information received and are investigating. No arrests have been made.

Nakoula Basseley Nakoula
Ghulam Ahmad Bilour
Actress Cindy Lee Garcia
Stephane Charbonnier of magazine Charlie Hebdo
housands of people have protested across the world against the antiIslam film made in the United States of America. Muslims were enraged at the appearance on YouTube of a video, a trailer for a longer film entitled “Innocence of Muslims”, which depicts Islam as a religion of violence and hate.
Cindy Lee Garcia, who had a small role in the film, said that she and others were given a script for a film called “Desert Warriors”. She sued Nakoula for fraud and slander, saying she had received death threats after the video was posted on YouTube. She also named Google and YouTube as defendants and asked that the film be removed from YouTube. A California judge rejected her motion for an order for YouTube to pull the film off its site. She now plans to file a new case in federal court over copyright claims. "Today we will dismiss the state court lawsuit, but we're going to file again today in federal court," Garcia's lawyer, Cris Armenta, said. "My client has a copyright claim," she said. "We intend to enforce it." Armenta said that third-party content distributors hold responsibility for the content on their platforms. "I think we should be very clear that Google and YouTube are doing the wrong thing, that they say in their own terms and guidelines that hate speech is not allowed," Armenta said. "How can this not be hate speech? How can this not be wrong, morally intellectually, legally?" Google previously rejected a request by the White House to reconsider its decision to keep the clips on YouTube, but the company has blocked the trailer in certain Muslim countries such as Egypt and Libya. Google said it was further restricting the clip to comply with local law rather than as a response to political pressure. "We've restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt," the company said. Google initially said that the video was within its guidelines.
The film gave rise to a torrent of violence across the Muslim world. The violence included an attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Benghazi in which the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed. U.S. and other foreign embassies were also stormed by furious Muslims in cities in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Afghan militants claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on a minivan carrying foreign workers that killed 12 people saying it was retaliation for the anti-Islam film. But three days after the amateurish film of obscure origin triggered an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, President Barack Obama led a ceremony to honour the returning dead and vowed to "stand fast" against the violence. "The United States will never retreat from the world," said Obama. A politician in Pakistan has put a bounty on the head of the filmmaker. Government minister Ghulam Ahmad Bilour urged Taliban and al-Qaeda to kill Nakoula Basseley Nakoula as their “sacred duty”. And he even offered to do it himself - whether or not it would mean him being hanged. A government spokesman condemned the remarks. The prime minister's press secretary, Shafqat Jalil, said that the government dissociated itself from Mr Bilour's statement. After a week of deadly international protests against an anti-Islam film, a French satirical magazine has fuelled the controversy by publishing offensive cartoons. It has poured oil on the fiery debate between freedom of expression and offensive provocation. The magazine Charlie Hebdo, which is known for outrageous humour, published the offensive
cartoons last week. The issue hit the stands eight days after the video triggered angry protests. Stephane Charbonnier, director of the French magazine, said his staff is "not really fuelling the fire" but rather using its freedom of expression "to comment (on) the news in a satirical way." The French government ordered the closure of its embassies, schools and other institutions in 20 countries on Friday after the publication of the offensive cartoons. As copies of the magazine flew off French news stand, its publishers insisted as always on their right to poke fun at all symbols of political and religious authority in the name of freedom of expression. "To me, these religious hardliners who protest and kill over a crappy film are no different to the people who made the crappy film. They're all the same pack," editor Stephane Charbonnier, under police protection since printing similar caricatures last November, told Reuters. "This is a satirical paper produced by leftwingers and when I say left-wingers that goes all the way from anarchists to communists to Greens, Socialists and the rest. Above all it is a secular and atheist newspaper," said Charbonnier, who signs his own sketches and goes by the name of "Charb". "When we attack the Catholic hard right… nobody talks about it in the papers. It's as if Charie Hebdo has official authorization to attack the Catholic hard right. But we are not allowed to make fun of Muslim hardliners. It's the new rule...but we will not obey it," he says.
T
It is understood that the film opens with a scene in which a Coptic family in Egypt is attacked by Muslims. The father tells his daughters that Muslims are bent on killing all Christians. The film shows Muslims to be savage killers hungry for wealth and bent on killing women and children. Many characters recite verses supposedly taken from the Quran although clearly invented, as they go about killing and extorting locals. The entire film is around an hour long, although most people have only seen a 14 minute trailer which has now been circulated on the internet. It was put together on a budget, with a cheaply made set, amateur actors and poor production standards. The most offensive parts of the film appear not to have been in the original, but dubbed over the soundtrack at a later date. The trailer for the film was posted through a Youtube account linked to the name 'sambacile'. US authorities now say they have identified Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, an Egyptian-born Coptic Christian living in California, as the man who made the film. The actors say they were misled about the film entirely, claiming that the original film had nothing to do with Islam and that all insults to Islam were added after production.

Ward 58 Councillor Zaytoon Waja Resigns ANC Response:
Real Reasons for Cllr Waja’s Resignation
I
n an open letter to the residents of Ward 58,Cllr Waja makes many unsubstantiated allegations against the ANC led administration of the City of Johannesburg Council. The letter which primarily announces her resignation as a Ward Councillor does not contain an honest account of Cllr Waja’s performance as a Councillor. She states in her letter that,“Being a Muslim who will not allow her values to be tarnished”. The ANC therefore challenges her to exercise the value of honesty in addressing the following accusations: • She is unaware of the processes of Council which she as a Councillor has to follow with regard to the resolution of service delivery issues. Her frustration is therefore not with “cadre deployment” but with simply being unaware of how to fulfil her duty as an elected representative of the residents of Ward 58. • She has a history of not attending meetings of Council or the Oversight Committee she was elected to serve on. Beside her record of poor attendance there is no record of her having contributed or raised issues of the residents of Ward 58 in Council or in any subcommittee meeting that she did attend. • Her resignation is not a voluntary action but is the result of her own party, the DA, forcing her to resign. In a letter, dated the 13 September 2012, the Whip of the DA, Cllr D. Corrigan, specifically requested the Speaker of Council to remove Cllr Waja as a Councillor at the City of Johannesburg. Her own party takes the view that she is a poor public representative and not worthy of being a Councillor. • On the 18 June 2012 the Office of the Chief Whip held a meeting with some concerned residents of Ward 58. The residents raised issues of uncontrolled development as well as by law enforcement. Under the instruction of the Chief Whip various officials were tasked with assisting the residents. The residents also complained that their Ward Councillor was uncooperative and unwilling to meet with them. We in the ANC are committed to working with and representing all residents in an effective manner in order to render efficient and timeous
service delivery. We recognise that there are particular challenges facing the community of Ward 58 and are addressing these challenges. In light of the above it becomes clear that Cllr Waja’s letter does not address the real issues. These issues are that she is unwilling to learn the processes of effective representation, indolence and non-performance as a Councillor. The ANC therefore requests, as her last act as a public representative, Cllr Waja honestly addresses the real reasons for her resignation instead of the disinformation contained in her open letter. Cllr Prema Naidoo (Chief Whip of Council) 082 995 5016
Exclusive with Zaytoon Waja
F
irstly, I choose to ignore the brutality of the ANC’s Bitterness. However I choose to rather thank my community for the overwhelming response and letters of gratitude that I have received over the passed few weeks. I now know and understand the valuable service delivery that the community achieved during my rank in office and I am truly grateful that the DA made a difference in ward 58. To my community, I may be gone but not forgotten. You will always be close to my heart and I hope and pray that you will find and choose a suitable leader who has you, my community, at heart. Being a leader is no easy task, but a true leader strives on honesty, integrity and truth. These are the core values I strive upon and I can only hope you find a councillor with these values.
As I said and I will say again, together we stand, divided we fall. Once again, I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks to each and everyone of you for your support and for realising that the DA can make a difference in creating a world class African city.

Local Muslims Protest Central Islamic Trust Against Anti-Islam Film Operation Qurbani T
he Central Islamic Trust is generally regarded as one of the oldest organisations serving the Muslim community of South Africa.
L
ocal Muslims have joined thousands of people all over the world in protests against the anti-Islam film made in the US. Thousands of people protested outside the US Consulate in Sandton last week expressing their anger at the film which appears to depict Islam as a religion of violence and hate. The protest was organised by the United Muslim Nation Organisation (UMNO). In a pamphlet issued to protestors, UMNO appreciated their presence but appealed for restraint. “Despite the zealousness with which we would like to defend the character and teachings of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW), the manner in which we conduct ourselves cannot be contrary to the teachings of our beloved Prophet Mohammad (SAW)”, UMNO said in the pamphlet. UMNO urged the protestors not to engage in any activity which would taint the image of Islam and implored them to demonstrate “in a peaceful and dignified manner”. The organisers urged the protestors to conduct themselves “in a manner shown by Nabi Mohammed (SAW) when he was insulted by Mushreeks and non-believers. He guided us to use wisdom to resolve all problems faced. He won the hearts of enemies by his character and humility. Today, we use the same principle to deal with the perpetrators of this act of blasphemy”, UMNO said in the pamphlet. Thousands of people converged outside the US Consulate expressing their anger at the film. The united front presented by the protestors
sent a clear message that local Muslims were enraged at the continues attempts to denigrate Islam and Prophet Mohammad (SAW). The protest went off without incident. The video is circulating on the Internet under several titles including "Innocence of Muslims". It was reported that Google had rejected a request by the White House to reconsider its decision to keep online the controversial movie clip on YouTube. The Internet company said it was censoring the video in India and Indonesia after earlier blocking it in Egypt and Libya, where U.S. embassies have been stormed by protestors. "We've restricted access to it in countries where it is illegal such as India and Indonesia, as well as in Libya and Egypt, given the very sensitive situations in these two countries," the company said. "This approach is entirely consistent with principles we first laid out in 2007." White House officials had earlier asked Google to reconsider whether the video had violated YouTube's terms of service. Google initially said that the video was within its guidelines. Google said it was further restricting the clip to comply with local law rather than as a response to political pressure.
The CIT, which is based in Fordsburg, was established in 1956 when its founders correctly assessed the need to regulate their activities for the benefit of the community. In its early days, the CIT addressed the needs of the Muslim community of greater Johannesburg but, with time, its activities and influence extended throughout the old Transvaal province. Today, the Central Islamic Trust is synonymous with the welfare of the Muslim community throughout South Africa. The CIT has a number of activities, all of which are designed to benefit the community. One such activity is their Qurbani project appropriately named Operation Qurbani. This project was conceived in 1983 over a casual discussion between the former Director of the CIT, Mohammed Mayet, the late Gora Valod, Baboo Jassat and Yunus Karolia. Little did they realise at the time that a casual discussion would give birth to a project which would, in time, immensely benefit those in need. Operation Qurbani is run by a sub-committee of the CIT under the able leadership of its chairman, Yunus Talia. “The CIT is blessed to have people like Aboo Limbada, Abdul Rehman Dajee, Mohamed Lockhat, Mohamed Bhamjee and Nasima Khan who freely give their time to make our Qurbani project a huge success”, Talia told the Fordsburg Community Newspaper. He had particular praise for Bhamjee and Khan who “work during the day of Eid without any additional remuneration”. Talia called upon the community to donate their Qurbani meat and skins, where possible, to the CIT so that “those less fortunate than us can also benefit”. He said that, according to a
Ahadeeth, the sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood falls on the ground. “The animal will be brought forward on the Day of Judgment with its blood, meat, limbs, etc. and shall be increased in weight seventy times, and then placed on the scale of deeds”, Talia added by quoting another Ahadeeth. The Muslim community is encouraged to perform Qurbani locally as it is a personal experience. The CIT collects skins and meat from the community. “We sell the skins to a tannery and utilise the funds for our feeding scheme”, Talia said. The CIT has utilised part of the funds from the sale of the skins to purchase and install a cold room at their premises in Fordsburg which can hold 300 carcasses at any given time. Talia added that the proceeds also funded the purchase of a van which is used to deliver Qurbani meat and welfare hampers to the poor and needy. It is permissible to utilize the skin for one's personal use. One may use it as a Musalla. However, if the skin is sold, it is not permissible to utilize the income thereof for personal use. It is Wajib to give it in charity. Sale of the skin without the intention of disbursing the money in charity is not permitted. It is not permissible to give the skin in lieu of any services rendered The CIT distributes the Qurbani meat to the needy and less fortunate in our community. Talia said that the CIT has many collection points. He said that those wishing to donate meat and skins may do so at CIT’s offices in Bree Street, Fordsburg. Talia added that meat and skins may also be delivered to collection points at the Mayfair Jumma Masjid parking area, at Protea Shell in Lenasia, the LMA Hall and at Azaadville Hardware. Talia paid tribute to them for their generosity in allowing the CIT to use their premises as collection points. It is permissible to utilise the skin for one's personal use, e.g. he may use it as a Musalla or a leather bucket etc. However, if the skin is sold, it is not permissible to use the income thereof. It is Wajib to give it in charity. Sale of the skin without the intention of disbursing the money in charity is not permitted. It is not permissible to give the skin in lieu of any services rendered.

The Virtues and Laws of Qurbani "It is neither their flesh nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is your Taqwa that reaches Him…" (Surah Hajj) braheem (AS) had two alternatives: Isubmit either to follow the cry of his heart or to to the call of his Creator. He chose
to submit. Qurbani therefore is not a monetary Ibaadah or a duty that is discharged in distant poor countries. Qurbani is a personal experience, an intimate and emotional encounter, an intimate occurrence made real by the oozing of blood.
Qurbani is about:
• Love for Allah in contrast to love of self obedience. • Loyalty to Allah in preference to loyalty to the family. • Faith versus emotion. • Struggle as opposed to pleasure. Where is this spirit of Qurbani in our idle and aimless nights and days? Who is able to place the knife on his heart in order to slaughter the beasts of rebellion, hatred, jealousy, pride, and greed etc.? Qurbani is an annual reaffirmation of our pledge to Allah, a pledge that: "Verily my prayer, my sacrifices, my life and my death are surrendered to Allah; the Rabb of the worlds." Eid-ul-Adha reverberates with the cries of surrender, submission, and sacrifice. It is a grim reminder that life is about action, struggle, and endurance.
Virtues of Qurbani
Qurbani is a practice directly instructed by Allah Ta'ala: "So turn in prayer towards your Lord and sacrifice (animals)." (108.2) Rasoolullah (SAW) has extolled its virtue in many Ahadith. There is nothing dearer to Allah Ta'ala during the days of Qurbani than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgment with its horns, hair, and hooves (to be weighed). The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood falls on the ground. Therefore sacrifice with an open and happy heart. (Tirmizi, Ibn Majah) Zayd lbn Arqam (RA) relates that the Companions (RA) queried, "O Rasoolullah (SAW) What is Qurbani?" He replied, "It is the Sunnah of your father lbraheem (AS)." They again asked, "What benefit do we derive from it?" He answered, "A reward for every hair (of the sacrificed animal)." "And (what reward is there

(Ibne Majah) When a person slaughters a Qurbani animal, he is forgiven at the fall of the first drop of blood, and verily, the animal shall be brought forward on the Day of Judgment with its blood, meat, limbs, etc. and shall be increased in weight seventy times, and then placed on the scale of deeds. (Kanzul Ummal) On whom is Qurbani Wajib (obligatory)? Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) on every Muslim who is: • of sound mind - mature (has reached the age of puberty), • Muqeem (i.e. he is not a Shari traveller) • Possesses the amount of 612,36 grams of silver or wealth equivalent to that value which is in excess of one's basic needs and debts, on any of the three days of Qurbani. It is not necessary that this amount be in one's possession for a complete lunar year. (Fatawa Hindiyyah) Qurbani is not incumbent on a child or an insane person whether they own wealth equivalent to the amount above or not, nor is it Wajib upon their guardians to perform it on their behalf. (Fataawa Mahmoodiyyah). Similarly, it is not Wajib on a Musaafir (one considered a traveller in Shariah). A Shar'i traveller is he who proceeds on a journey with an intention of travelling 77 kms. He will be treated as a traveller as soon as soon as he leaves his town. However if he intends residing at any place for 15 days or more then he will cease to be a traveller when he arrives at that location. (Fatawa Hindiyyah). A person upon whom Qurbani is not necessary should not incur debts beyond one's capacity to offer the Qurbani. If Qurbani is not compulsory on a person, for example a Musaafir, then it is virtuous to do so if it is within the person's means.
The Qurbani Animal
It is permissible to slaughter a goat, sheep, cow, bull, buffalo or camel, male or female for Qurbani. The minimum age of • a goat, sheep, or ram is one full year, • a cow, bull or buffalo is two years old, and • a camel five years. Animals that are younger than the prescribed age are not suitable for Qurbani. (Fatawa Hindiyyah). If a sheep is more than six months old but less than a year, and physically appears to be one year old it will suffice for Qurbani. (Fatawa Hindiyyah). A cow, bull, buffalo or camel will suffice for seven persons provided no one's share is less than one seventh and the niyyah (intention) of all partners is to attain reward and not merely to obtain meat. (Fatawa Shaamiyah). A goat, sheep or ram will suffice for the Qurbani of one person only. (Fatawa Hindiyyah). It is permissible and preferable to slaughter a castrated animal. (Fatawa Mahmoodiyah). It is advisable to purchase the Qurbani animal a few days prior to slaughtering in order to build up some form of attachment with the animal by taking care of it. (Fatawa
Hindiyyah). Animals chosen for Qurbani should be healthy, free from faults and defects. (Fatawa Shaamiyah)
Animals with Defects
The following animals are not suitable for Qurbani: • An animal that is blind, one-eyed or has lost more than one-third of its eyesight. (Fatawa Hindiyyah) • Animals that have lost more than a third of the ear. Similarly, animals which have no ears from birth. Animals with small ears are suitable. (Fatawa Hindiyyah) • Animals whose horn/s has been broken off from the root. However, an animal born without horns or if the horns are broken off but not from the root is suitable for Qurbani. (Fatawa Shaamiyah) • Animals which have one lame leg to the extent that it walks on three legs only and is unable to use the fourth leg. However if the animal can walk to the place of slaughter on the fourth leg with a limp it will be allowed. (Fatawa Shamiyah) • Animals so lean and thin that their bones have no marrow. (Fatawa Shamiyah) • If an animal gets injured whilst being slaughtered, e.g. it's leg breaks, ear gets cut etc., the Qurbani will be valid. (Fatawa Shamiyah) • If an animal was bought in a healthy and perfect state and thereafter became unfit for Qurbani then, If the owner is not wealthy (does not possess of nisaab) it will be permissible to offer this animal for Qurbani. If the owner is wealthy (possesses the Nisaab), then it is compulsory for him to obtain another animal. (Fatawa Shamiyah)
Method of Slaughtering an Animal
A Muslim should take every care to slaughter an animal without subjecting it to unnecessary pain and torture. This was the instruction of Rasoolullah (SAW). The following are pertinent points to be kept in mind. • The knife to be used for slaughter should be well sharpened so that it slits the throat immediately, without causing undue pain to the animal. The knife should not be sharpened in front of the animals. • The animal to be slaughtered should be given food and water; it should not be slaughtered when it is hungry and thirsty. • It should not be brutally dragged along to the place of slaughter. The animal should be slaughtered at an isolated place so that other animals cannot witness the slaughter. • It should be laid on the ground with ease, as it is abominable to use undue force. As soon as the animal has been placed on the ground, one should hasten in slaughtering it. Undue delay must be avoided. • The animal should not be slaughtered with such a force that its head is severed, or the knife reaches the spinal cord. It is incorrect to slaughter the animal above the neck because it causes the animal too much pain and agony. The animal should be left after
slaughtering in such a way as to freely kick in its death throes. After slaughtering, the head should not be cut off nor should the animal be skinned until all movements has completely stopped. • While slaughtering, a Muslim should say: 'Bismillah Allahu Akbar' (In the name of Allah, Allah is the greatest). It is more virtuous to slaughter the animal with one's own hands. If one is unable to slaughter, it is advisable that one witnesses the sacrifice. It is not necessary to make the niyyah (intention) of Qurbani verbally, however it is necessary to say Bismillah Allahu Akbar when slaughtering. • The Qurbani animal should be placed on it's left side facing the Qiblah and the following dua should be recited before slaughtering the animal: "I have set my direction firmly and truly towards Him Who created the heavens end the earth. And never shall I give partners to Allah. Verily, my worship and my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah Sustainer of the worlds. O Allah this sacrifice is from you and is for you." • When slaughtering the animal recite: "In the name of Allah. Allah is the Greatest." • Du'aa to be read after Zabah (sacrifice): "O Allah accept from me this sacrifice like you have accepted from your beloved Muhammad and your friend Ibrahim. Peace be upon them."
The Meat of the Sacrificed Animal
• The meat of the animal which has more than one share should be distributed by weighing it and not by estimation unless the head and feet and skin form part or the distributed shares. (Fatawa Shamiyah) • It is preferable to divide the meat into three parts. One part for one's family, another should be distributed among friends and relatives and the third amongst the poor and needy. If a person has a very large family he may keep all the meat. “Help My Krap” Store invites you…
Russell Tribunal on Palestine UN & US Complicity in Israel’s Crimes to be examined at the Russell Tribunal on Palestine (6-7 October, New York City) ollowing the horrific Operation Cast Lead in 2009, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine (RToP) was founded to globally expose human rights abuses and violations of international law by the state of Israel and its collaborators. First in Barcelona, then London, Cape Town, and now coming to New York City in early October, the Tribunal gathers legal experts, scholars, activists, and experts to help shed light on the reality of Israel’s occupation of Palestine, and demands accountability from Israel’s corporate and international enablers. On the doorstep of the United Nations and in America’s corporate capital, UN and US complicity in Israel’s crimes will now be examined. The RToP is modelled entirely on the International War Crimes Tribunal founded by Bertrand Russell in 1966, that informed and mobilised public opinion against US involvement in the Vietnam War. Previous Russell Tribunals have focussed on human rights violations in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Iraq. Claims that the RToP singles out Israel are, therefore, unfounded. Russell Means and Dennis Banks, “the two most famous Indians since Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, stand alongside the most prominent woman of the Black Power movement, Angela Davis, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, Alice Walker, and the world’s leading public intellectual, Noam Chomsky, South African antiApartheid stalwart, Ronnie Kasrils and legal expert, John Dugard. The Russell Tribunal is not a court of law, it is a tribunal of the people. Although adopting a different means, the Russell Tribunal on Palestine is part of a movement of resistance, inspired by the Arab Spring and the Occupy Wall Street movement. It’s an expression of the strong demand coming from civil society that governments are more accountable and committed in ensuring that democracy, the rule of law, and the fundamental human rights of people are respected in every part of the world. Directly led by the people for the people, the Russell Tribunal’s most significant achievement is its very detailed findings, which are firmly rooted in international law. This provides a powerful weapon for citizens to demand that governments, institutions and corporations, end their collusion in the international law and human rights violations perpetrated by Israel against the Palestinian people. Sherry Wolf will kindly arrange interviews with speakers and jury members. Condemnation of the Relentless Attack on the Muslim Community T
he Media Review Network condemns the publication of the French caricatures ridiculing the Messenger of God, the Prophet Muhammed (PBUH). The argument put forward following this publication has been the standard freedom of speech line. This defence has been echoed by the French Government in defence of this blatant attack on the global Muslim community. However, the failure to address the counterbalance of freedom of speech, namely defamation is a clear indication of the double standards when issues of Islam and Islamophobia arise. It is accepted that freedom of speech is a fundamental principle that builds the foundations of a society. In the same breath, the limitation of this right to prohibit incitement and defamation must be implemented. The double standards are further exposed as France prohibits any peaceful protests in opposition to this vile attack on the Muslim community via the implementation of draconian measures. Such actions beg the question – is freedom of speech a right reserved for some and not for others? In the context of global protest against the defamatory US movie, these caricatures fuel an already widespread rage felt by Muslims around the world. We urge calm and rational responses from our brothers and sisters around the world. However it is but a utopian idea to except saintly peaceful protests whilst the sensitivities of Muslims are relentlessly attacked. The French caricatures and the defence thereof communicates to 1,6 Billion Muslims a message of exclusion and disregard for their religious beliefs and sensitivities. Furthermore it marks the demise of mutual respect and seeks only to divide our communities. The Media Review Network condemns the relentless campaign to defame the Messenger of God (PBUH), attack already inflamed sensitivities of Muslims and destroy the values of mutual respect in this global village. We call on the French Government to revive the values of mutual respect that they seek to so vehemently murder and abandon their implementation of blatant double standards. We make a further call on the French Government to take proactive steps to prevent Islamophbic attacks of this nature. Issued by : Ibrahim Vawda Senior Researcher - Media Review Network

ating website AshleyMadison.com has blown the lid of Johannesburg’s most unfaithful suburbs. The website caters for those already in relationships based on an overall membership of more than 20 000.
In a startling revelation, the website lists Johannesburg suburbs where clandestine cheating appear to be the order of the day. Not surprisingly, some of the wealthiest areas made the list. “Simply put, the more successful you are, the likelier you'll cheat, and Johannesburg is full of successful people looking for something outside their marriage," said Noel Biderman, CEO of AshleyMadison.com. He said that opportunity comes with financial success and that professionals tend to travel more frequently allowing them to step out on their mates.
Lenasia is rated number 9 in the list of top 10 cheating hot spots. According to the website, Rivonia tops the list followed by Dainfern, Greenside, Sandton, Fourways, Bryanston, Soweto, Glenvista, Lenasia and Bedfordview. In addition to listing the cheating hot spots, the website also found interesting additional demographic data in respect of these neighbourhoods.
It noted that its members with the highest number of affair partners were found in Fourways and Glenvista boasted the most loyal members with the least number of affair partners. Dainfern provided most female members to the site and the most single female members came from Soweto. The youngest members came from Greenside. Finally, the website noted that the highest number of religious members came from Lenasia.
I think it’s the memories of tugging on huge candyfloss clouds at funfairs or sipping on lime milkshakes at Milky Lane or even helping my Mom decorate soft icy pink cupcakes!
It is all just a nudge of beautiful childhood memories!
Tips to work the trend! Take soft baby steps. If you not sure about embracing the pastels, start small. Just add a beautiful pastel shoe or only a soft hued handbag will give you that fashion forward edge. Embrace luscious accessories. A statement neck piece or frothy “stack ‘em high” bracelets in soft tones will look beautiful!
AshleyMadison.com was created in Canada on 13 February 2002. Its founder, Noel Biderman, is known in the international press as the "King of Infidelity". He developed a new social network concept that is the second fastest growing in the world after Facebook. Currently, the site has over 14 million users world-wide and more than 100 000 users in South Africa.
Don’t overdo it and do mix those pastels. Too much of one colour will be an overkill. You will end up looking like a runny melting ice-cream. A simple blazer can go a long way. Investing in a cute well cut blazer in your favourite pastel hue will be well worth it. It will certainly take your abaya to the next level!
YOUR BASE! Yes, a beautiful “black on black” abaya! Update your silhouette with new cuts and styles.
Summer 2012 fashion is all Pastel Pretty and I am floating in all its soft glory!
I will try to inspire you to work your plain abaya with new season trends. Pastels are today’s Nspiration, so do watch this space!

Youngest Guantanamo
Detainee Returns To Canada Captivates Audience
mar Khadr, the youngest prisoner to O be held at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, has been returned to his native Canada. Khadr had been held at the US base in Cuba since 2002, after being detained in Afghanistan when he was just 15 years old. A military plane flew Khadr to Canada last week. He will serve the rest of his eight year jail term in Canada. He pleaded guilty to killing An American soldier in Afghanistan. The Canadian Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, told a news conference that Khadr left the prison on a US military plane and arrived at a Canadian air base in Trenton in Ontario province, from where he was transferred to the Millhaven maximum prison. The US Department of Defense said in a statement: "The United States government has returned Khadr to Canada where he will serve out his remaining sentence. The United States co-ordinated with the government of Canada regarding appropriate security and humane ,
treatment measures." Khadr was 15 years old when he was captured in Afghanistan in 2002. He was the first person since World War Two to be prosecuted in a war crimes tribunal for acts committed as a juvenile. Khadr was sentenced to 40 years in prison by a US military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay in 2010 on war crimes charges. The charges against him were murder in violation of the law of war; attempted murder; conspiracy; providing material support for terrorism; and spying. But as part of his plea deal, his sentence was limited to eight years. Under the deal, he became eligible to return to Canada last October. It was reported at the time that Khadr was taken to Afghanistan by his father, a senior al-Qaeda member, who apprenticed the boy to a group of bomb makers who opened fire when US troops came to their compound. Khadr was captured in the firefight, during which he was blinded in one eye and shot twice in the back. Khadr’s father died in a firefight with Pakistani troops near the Afghan border in 2003. One brother is paralysed from the waist down after being wounded in that same battle. Another has just been released from jail in Toronto after successfully fighting extradition to the US on terror charges. Omar Khadr's sister Zaynab and mother Maha are well-known in Canada for their extremist views. Canada declined to intervene in Khadr's trial, despite federal court rulings in Ottawa that his rights were violated when Canadian agents interrogated him at Guantanamo Bay. The majority of Canadians supported the campaign to repatriate Khadr, now 26, though the country remains split over the case. "Omar Khadr is a known supporter of the al-Qaeda terrorist network and a convicted terrorist," Mr Toews said. Many still consider him and some members of his family a threat, while others see him as a child victim of both an extreme Islamist ideology and cruel and unusual treatment at the hands of the US authorities. About 166 detainees still remain in detention at Guantanamo Bay.
