AB7 – Undisputed Key to the African Food and Beverage Market “Overwhelming! Excellent! Great visitor turnout!” are just a few of the comments from exhibitors describing Africa’s Big Seven (AB7) this year. The show took place from 15 to 17 July at Gallagher Convention Centre. ut the one comment that best sums up Africa’s biggest food and beverage trade show is by Yudi Dahlan from the Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre in Johannesburg: “All exhibitors from my country feel that AB7 is the ‘ultimate showcase’ for their products,” he says.

years’ experience. “Our booth is already booked for next year!” exclaims Anria Malan, the company’s project and sales manager. “The main aim of being at AB7 was to promote our company, our products and the services we offer to established clients as well as prospective new customers, and we definitely achieved this,” explains Malan. “AB7 gives us an opportunity to broaden our customer

“AB7 is a true door-opener to the African market,” continues Dahlan. “All our exhibitors received excellent feedback from visitors; most of them are positive they have secured deals with potential clients met at the expo. They were also excited to be able to introduce new products to visitors.”

The Sweet Taste of Success “The AB7 experience was overwhelming; we received an excellent response from visitors,” says Kavitha Kalicharan, Communications Specialist at Nestlé.

“Our main aim this year was to increase awareness of the Nestlé brand as the world’s largest food company. We also succeeded in highlighting Nestlé as a Halaal certified company. Interestingly, most of the product enquiries we received from visitors were about Nestlé’s seven coffee blends and 14 chocolate brands,” says Kalicharan.

database across various industries, both in South Africa and other African countries. We concluded a number of deals at this year’s event, and even received orders on the stand. We left AB7 with more leads, more enquiries and even better relationships than ever before!” Tim Jordan, the sales director for specialist production line equipment supplier J-Pak, is another exhibitor keen to come back next year. “We really had a great turnout of visitors to our stand, and found that small business owners actually had some very good enquiries; most of them were key decision makers,” says Jordan.

America Comes To Africa “We like to come to Africa’s Big Seven because Southern Africa is a growing market for us, with a lot of interest in US products,” says Yolanda Roundtree, Marketing Supervisor for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in the US. “We represent the Southern United States and our role is to introduce US companies to the South African market.”

Organiser Underlines AB7’s Winning Business Formula “AB7 has grown considerably in sheer volume, with many repeat exhibitors being joined by even more newcomers. Exhibitors are taking more floor space and building bigger and more elaborate display stands,” says John Thomson of show organiser, Exhibition Management Services. “The show again proves the incredible value of face-to-face contact with potential clients and the importance of being seen; it’s an effective means of establishing new business contacts and finding new customers, especially from other countries in Africa.” Almost 9 000 people flocked to Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand to investigate what 304 manufacturers and producers from 42 countries in Africa and around the world had to offer the sub-continent’s food and beverage industry. “AB7 attracts exhibitor companies locally and from around the world, all keen to tap into the buying power of Africa’s growing middle class,” adds Thomson. “What makes the expo unique is its co-location with the Southern African International Trade Exhibition (SAITEX), a major retail trade show. Together, they form the biggest single event of its kind in Africa.” For more information contact Lineke Fleischer, Exhibition Management Services. Tel: +27 11 783 7250. Fax: +27 11 783 7269. Book Review: Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire A

fter testifying in court during the bail hearing in what has come to be known as South Africa’s first murder resulting from Islamophobic violence, a number of journalists approached me and confessed that they were completely ill-informed about the danger this menace posed. Their candid views and the fact that the magistrate had probed me quiet intensely to make sense of Islamophobia were revealing. That he finally denied bail by leaning on the harmful political underpinning derived from hatred of Islam in a context wherein the accused being charged for murder is alleged to have mocked his victim as “Bin Laden” and

other racist terms before brutally assaulting him, made me aware that while South Africa is relatively immune from Islamophobia, knowledge of it was inadequate. It is thus a relief to know that new publications on this significant subject dealing with one of the most persistent forms of racism have made a timely appearance. Deepa Kumar, who is neither Arab nor Muslim but an outspoken activist is the author of Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire. Her academic credentials as an associate professor of media studies and Middle East studies at Rutgers University in the United States are clearly evident in this brilliant study. It is not surprising that Elizabeth Poole, author of Reporting Islam: Media Representations of British Muslims, hailed Kumar’s book as a presentation of forceful arguments supported by a wealth of evidence. Having grown up in India in a home where neighbours on both sides were Muslim, Kumar is familiar with many practices associated with Islam, including the azan [call to prayer] as an everyday sound. She claims that instinctively she knew that the Islamophobic rhetoric that passed as common sense in the United States where she spent her adult life was dead wrong. Having read her book and given my own limited experience in combating misrepresentations and

demeaning stereotypes of Muslims and Islam, I am certain that her detailed analysis of the subject will expose the underlying racism inherent in the logic of Islamophobia. Drawing on her academic training as a cultural theorist, Kumar situated the rhetoric of Islamophobia within the broader political, historical, legal, and societal context from which it emerges to show that anti-Muslim racism has been primarily a tool of the elite in various societies. She acknowledges that the term “Islamophobia” may not be adequate to denote the phenomenon of cultural racism against Muslims: “While it does have some limits, I continue to use this term not only because it is now widely accepted but also because in this book I study specifically the fear [and hatred] generated against the ‘Muslim threat’”. Kumar’s well-researched study is located within the prism of the American empire with a large part of the book detailing in great accuracy a complex web of intriguing laws attacking Muslim civil liberties. She deals extensively too with aspects of the United States’ duplicitous policies – both domestic and foreign – regarding the “Islamic threat”. Readers unfamiliar with America’s extensive anti -Muslim network will be deeply shocked to find that surveillance, detention and deportation

Business

along with preemptive prosecution are defining characteristics of empire-building. A particularly fascinating core part of Kumar’s insightful analysis is the chapter titled “The Persistence of Oriental Myths”. Here she demonstrates her profound grasp of the historical context of Islamophobia by rebutting a series of myths. “Myths about Islam in the twenty-first century are indeed historical, but they are based on a distorted or selective interpretation of the past” she explains. Deepa Kumar’s remarkable study will certainly stand out as a comprehensive and unique contribution in unmasking purveyors of anti-Muslim racism. More than that, she demonstrates that Islamophobic myths did not arise spontaneously after the end of the Cold War but are rooted in centuries of conquest and colonialism, from the Crusades to the ‘War on Terror’ in the words of Arun Kundnani, author of

The End of Tolerance: Racism in 21st Century Britain.

Published by Haymarket Books in Chicago, Islamophobia and the Politics of Empire should be compulsory reading for analysts, commentators, journalists, activists and jurists. Reviewed by: Iqbal Jassat Executive Member: Media Review Network Johannesburg www.mediareviewnet.com

Let's go shrimping... Quick and easy to make, shrimps are a great option to sizzle up your appetite. The biggest advantage of prawns is that they do not take much cooking time. "They make for wonderful starters or even main course. You can have prawns steamed, barbequed, poached, sauteed or cooked in curry, depending on your taste palate or how health-conscious you are," says Prashant Tikadia, executive chef. Prawns are rich in proteins and have abundant nutritional value and health benefits. Known to be a healthier food option than meat and beef, prawns have become the favourite party food option for people who love their food and also like to check their calories. But apart from the taste, prawns have other benefits too. They are low in saturated fats and the acid content in prawns is beneficial for the human body. The next time you throw a party, go for some lip-smacking prawn platters that your friends will remember for a while.

Store it right Frozen, cooked or uncooked prawns should ideally be thawed in the refrigerator in advance. If you need to thaw quickly, put the shrimps under cold water. Cooked shrimps should ideally be stored in a sealed bag for no more than three days in the freezer. Raw shrimp can be frozen with shell or without, but should have the heads removed. Raw shrimps last up to six months in a freezer. Commercially frozen raw shrimp will last longer without deterioration, since they are flash-frozen with little handling. Shrimps should be kept in the fridge in their original packaging or can be transferred to an airtight container. They should also be kept in their shell until they are needed for cooking. Remember to defrost them before cooking.

Choose correctly -Prawns are available in the market in a variety of types and sizes. Tiger and rock prawns are the most popular ones. -They are normally graded by their size and count. The higher the number, the smaller the size. -While selecting prawns, pick the ones with a mild scent. Chef de cuisine, Parimal Sawant says, "If there is any hint of ammonia, it is a sign that the shrimp is way past its prime. Some may have spots, which means it has been poorly handled."

-Commercially sold prawns are defrosted, and the flesh appears opaque whereas fresh shrimps have a translucent flesh. The glow on the shells of the shrimp indicates freshness.

Size matters Shrimp per kilo: 10 shrimps or less = Colossal 11 to 15 = Jumbo 16 to 20 = Extra-large 21 to 30 = Large 31 to 35 = Medium 36 to 45 = Small about 100 = Miniature

Did you know? -Prawns and shrimps belong to the same family as crabs and lobsters. -In order to grow, prawns and shrimps must shed their shells. -Shrimps are known to help prevent against heart and circulatory diseases.

Cleaning guides -Wash the shrimps under running water. Remember to use normal tap water, avoid hot water. -To de-shell a shrimp, the tail is held while gently removing the shell around the body. The tail can be detached completely at this point, or left attached for the purpose of presentation. -De-veining means removing the sand vein. To remove this, cut the shrimp from the centre, lengthwise, from head to tail with a sharp knife, and remove the sand vein.

Thai chilli prawns Ingredients ½ kg shrimps, 200 grams sliced mushrooms 4-6 cloves 2 tablespoons pasted Thai chilli 4 tablespoon oyster sauce 1 spring onion 4 slices of fresh red chillies 1 bunch bok choy (Chinese cabbage) pinch of salt, oil Method -Mix oyster sauce and roasted red chilli paste -Heat the pan and sautÊ garlic. When half cooked, add mushrooms and the shrimps. Cover and let the shrimps cook. Lower the fire once the sauce from the shrimps starts to boil. -When the shells turn rich orange, add in the chilli and oyster mix. Stir to make sure all the shrimps are covered with chilli-oyster mix. Turn off the fire and leave the pot covered. Serve with sautÊed bok choy on the side.

Positively pink this Breast Cancer Awareness Month millions of lives in South Africa, it is important to understand exactly what it is. Breast cancer is not necessarily restricted to a lump in the breast when diagnosed, although that is generally the first sign of disease. As a matter of fact, it is not the lump itself that kills but rather the spreading of cancerous cells to other parts of the body, a phenomenon known as metastasis. Breast cancer isn't only restricted to women, with men also being susceptible to the disease. A woman can develop breast cancer any time during her adult life - even as early as in her late twenties. Despite medical advances, breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women.

Symptoms of breast cancer

T

his October we celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to recent health statistics for South Africa, 1 in every 29 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer; the good news is that if it's detected early, there is an excellent chance of recovery.

Understanding breast cancer To understand better how this disease affects

The risk of developing breast cancer increases with age. In the early stages of breast cancer there are few symptoms, however, over time common changes can start to develop, which may include: • A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the armpit area • A change in the size or shape of the breast • Dimpling or puckering in the skin of the breast

• The nipple becoming inverted (turning inward into the breast)

• Abnormal discharge from the nipple • Scaly, red, or swollen skin on the

breast, nipple, or areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple) • The skin of the breast taking on an orange peel look or feel If you notice that you may have one or more of the highlighted symptoms, be sure to go to your health professional for a breast exam. Often lumps on the breast can be harmless, but these still need to be checked.

Reducing your risks By going for regular check-ups, early detection is possible. If you are over 40 years old, ask your doctor how often you should go for a mammogram, which is a special x-ray to detect lumps in the breast. Reduce your risks of getting breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight; avoiding alcohol or limiting its use to less than one drink per day; getting regular exercise; minimising the duration of hormone therapy; and limiting your use of antibiotics and exposure to pesticides.

Healthy and Happy Hearing these can cause earwax to become impacted.

I

n ancient times people depended on their sense of sight and hearing for survival. Yet today, communication skills are amongst the most valued and these are enhanced by the ability to hear. It has been estimated that approximately 2000 babies born daily around the world have hearing loss or acquire permanent hearing loss very early in life. Good ante-natal care and awareness of risk factors like rubella virus, genetic predisposition, low birth weight and prematurity, will promote early identification and management of hearing loss. Neonatal hearing screening services available at most private and some public hospitals enable your baby’s hearing to be screened soon after birth. Middle ear infections often resulting from upper respiratory tract infections, are common in children and should be treated promptly. Custom-made swim plugs protect against infection from bacteria in water. Excessive earwax can be avoided by instilling warm olive oil into the ear, however it is important to allow for the ear’s mechanism of selfcleaning. Avoid the use of cotton buds as

One of the most notable causes of hearing loss is exposure to extreme noise. There are significant concerns about those children who listen to music at damaging levels through their iPods. Extended use of these devices at excessive volume should be avoided and employees in noise-zones should strictly adhere to regulations governing use of noise protectors. Customised noise protectors are amongst the most effective. Some illnesses and medications can affect your hearing. Symptoms like sudden hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ear), dizziness (vertigo) and hypersensitivity should not be ignored. Consult an Ear Nose and Throat Specialist or Audiologist promptly. Signs of hearing loss include : frequently asking for repetitions, having difficulty in group conversations or background noise, turning up the volume on the TV/radio, words seem indistinct or people seem to be mumbling. Take advantage of free hearing screening offers or have your hearing tested by a r e g i st e r e d a u di o l o g i st / he a ri n g care professional Hearing aids offer a small, discreet and effective hearing solution for most people. Their ability to automatically enhance listening in quiet and group conversations, while allowing for wireless connectivity to cellphones, landlines and TV’s means that conversations over the phone are enhanced and that the family no longer has to grumble about how loud the TV is. Take advantage of offers for trial fitting of hearing aids and “test-drive” the device of your choice.

Oh Travellers to the Haram By Maulana Muhammad Wali Raazi

O

h guests of the Most Merciful! Oh fortunate ones! Oh travellers to the Haram! Congratulations on being invited by the Lord of the worlds! Be glad that He has invited you to His House! Not only that, but He has given you the provisions for travel and lodging. And not only that, but He has also filled your hearts with such love of Him and His House that today you leave your homes, your cities, your countries and embark on this journey solely for the pleasure of your Lord. Had this desire not been there then you would have never planned to undertake this journey. How many a millionaire are there who travel throughout Switzerland, England, America, and so on - who spend their children's vacations over there - but never receive this invitation: Come, visit Our House! Live in Our city! Act according to the Sunnats of Our beloved servants! Run between the hills of Safa and Marwa just as a wife of a prophet and a mother of a prophet did! We love this running of yours. Hurl rocks against Satan just as Our Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salaam) did! Perform sacrifice just as a loyal servant of Ours laid his son and ran the knife over his throat because of Our Command! But we had prohibited the knife from even scratching the throat. Our servant did as he was told and the knife did as it was commanded (i.e. it did not cut); both acted under our command. Those who claim to love Us - We test them to see whether their claim is true. Hazrat Thanwi (rahmatullahi alayhi) has written that when Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salaam) got tired running the knife, he said to the knife: " Why don't you cut? The knife responded: You have been commanded to cut, and I have been ordered not to cut; do your job, I am doing mine. Then a ram was sent from the heavens and the test was complete." We were pleased with this act of Our friend - now you also imitate him. We have provided you with animals otherwise where would you have wandered in search

for animals? We have also provided their food - otherwise where would you find food for them in this dry, arid land? Now the animals are there, the knife is ready, just run the knife and your work is done! Then, We will do Our work: We will accept this sacrifice just as We accepted the sacrifice of Our friend and We will endow you with such rewards as never could even occur to you in your thoughts. This is Our city and Our House. Come here as a devotee; if you are not a devotee, then take on the appearance of a devotee! Be content in whatever condition We keep you in. Here there are crowds of devotees. You will be pushed and shoved; your hair will fill with dirt and dust, and your feet will tire from walking. Be it pushing or shoving, dirt and dust, or difficulties in Our alleys - Our devotees are proud of such difficulties and consider them as the treasures of their lives. Whoever thinks of these hardships and pains as calamities should not come. He should stay at his home. But those who come as devotees - We will wipe out their sins and return them to their homes as if they were just born today. This is a bathing of bodies and souls rotten and spoiled due to sins washing these sins will require rubbing. Without rubbing how is cleanliness obtained? Oh travellers to the Haram! Hajj is no small blessing. This is a great act of worship - very different from all the other forms of worship. All sorts of outward and inward worships are combined in this. Money is spent in the path of Allah and great effort is exerted; it is a purification of the soul of the highest degree; it contains spiritual exercises; there is patience and gratitude, love and ma'rifah. It is a witnessing of the favours of the Almighty and of the acceptance of duas. There is both outward and inward closeness. In a hadith, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) addressed those performing Hajj and Umrah - and today you are his addressees: Sayyidna Abu Hurairah (radiallahu anhu) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "The travellers of Hajj and Umrah are Allah's special guests; if they supplicate to Allah, He accepts their supplications and if they seek forgiveness, He forgives them." (Hisn-e-Hasin, Ibn Majah and Nasai) Abu Hurairah (RA) narrates that Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "The travellers of Hajj and Umrah are Allah's special guests; if they supplicate to Allah, He accepts their supplications and if they seek

forgiveness, He forgives them." (Hadith) Oh travellers to the Haram! Years of spiritual exercise and training may not yield the benefits that can be obtained from this, if only we understand them and have a will to seek them. Oh guests of Allah! I will not discuss with you the merits of Hajj, because if you did not know its merits than you would have never made this blessed intention (to go to Hajj). Neither will I mention its rites and rulings, because you can get all of this from books and training sessions for Hajj. Rather I want to point out something else. You are going to the great Court of the King of kings. When a person is a guest of a king then he learns the manners of the court long before he goes there. Then when he reaches there, he monitors every deed of his making sure that it does not result in disrespect. Oh travellers to the Haram! I wish to share with you an extremely beneficial recipe-one that you will neither find in books nor in lectures. I know that pilgrims are subject to numerous difficulties and hardships. In this journey, there are many trying moments, no, rather many trying hours and days. Sometimes there is the immigration obstacle. There are the difficulties in finding lodging and in getting to the Haram. There are the hardships encountered in Tawaf and Sa'ee. But, my brothers! To achieve any big goal, you must undertake hardships. Those who are mentally prepared for this are the successful ones. The recipe that I am presenting is called "tafweez", which means entrusting your matters, i.e. entrusting your intentions and desires to Allah. The opposite of this is "tajweez" which means relying on your own plans and actions. Tajweez is the root of all of our worries in our normal course of affairs and especially during the journey to Hajj. On the other hand, tafweed results in complete contentment. The person who in his difficulties leaves matters into the hands of Allah finds that Allah shows him ways out of his difficulties. When you reach the court of the King, then entrust your matters to the King. If he makes you sleep on the floor, then sleep happily on the floor. And if he makes you sit on the throne then sit on the throne remembering that you are in the court of the King. He has invited you here to honour you." Never lose sight of the true Beloved for even a blink of the eye, Lest the king glance at you with mercy and you be unaware. " Many people return from Hajj and tell stories about the unmannerly behaviour of the people there and

magnify the difficulties they encountered there. One time I received a letter from an old man who said that: while you give people good tidings of Jannah, I went to Hajj but found no trace of the fear of God in the people therein. Then the man mentioned his difficulties in such words and talked about other pilgrims and the Saudi people in such a way that I felt sorrow over the way he mentioned this. We are not going there to have a picnic. When millions of people gather in a city of three or four hundred thousand, then due to the crowd there will be pushing and shoving. The paths will be narrow and difficult. So undertake this journey as an ardent devotee. Whoever is ardent in the love of someone finds enjoyment in the difficulties he encounters on the way and contentment in these worries. One time I went with my respected father Hazrat Mufti Muhammad Shafi (rahmatullah alayhi) for Umrah in Ramadan. We were sitting in the Haram in front of the Rukn Yamani. The crowd was immense. People were jumping our shoulders. One Sudanese man jumped my shoulder and his leg hurt my neck. It slipped from my mouth, how rude these people are! I turned and saw that my father's face had changed colour and there were signs of anger. He stayed silent for a while and then said: Would you rather that these shoves strike another person who is sitting somewhere else desperately wishing to be here and enduring them, but could not get here? This was around 1974. This statement of my father changed my world completely. Now I wished to encounter more of these shoves.

Turning trash into treasure peaking at the “separation at source” S campaign launch held in Kliptown, Soweto, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Environment Infrastructure and Services Cllr Matshidiso Mfikoe said households would be provided with reusable plastic bags and new bins. She said they would then be required to put different types of waste in different bags for recycling purposes, hence the term

“separation at source”. Pikitup Acting Managing Director Lawrence Boya said the operation would cost the entity more than R40 million to implement. Separating waste at source meant it was no longer going to be the responsibility of only Pikitup to manage waste. He said the campaign sought to actively engage residents to appreciate waste in their own households.“Separation at source is the way to go,” said Cllr Mfikoe. “Gone are the days when people used to dump waste because they disliked it. From now on, households will be required to manage their waste properly. “Our aim is to work with those who eke out a living by selling waste and creating sustainable opportunities for themselves. In this regard, we will explore all legal avenues to ensure that we manage waste differently.” The project not only encourages residents to

recycle their household refuse, which is ordinarily tossed away, but it also promotes job creation through the exchange of money for recyclable waste. The rollout of phase two of the project starts at Zondi depot-serviced areas in Soweto from October 1. The idea is to get residents to start turning trash (waste) into treasure (resource), thereby evoking a change in mindset and extract value from what was previously viewed as useless. The “separation at source” concept has already been applied in the Waterval area, which covers suburbs such as Northcliff, Cresta, Westcliff and Fairlands. Essentially, the concept requires residents to use separate receptacles to collect waste. A black bin is used for non-recyclable household waste; a clear durable plastic bag for glass, cans, plastics etc; and a reusable white bag for all paper materials. “We aim to reduce waste,

educate people about the benefits of recycling and create jobs for Joburg,” said Cllr Mfikoe. Explaining why the concept was not being rolled out across the City yet, Cllr Mfikoe said: “The phased implementation process is so that we can learn as we implement and also ensure that more residents in the city become involved by 2014. “If we want to preserve our environment, we need to start practising environmentally friendly habits now. One of these habits is recycling. Many residents are unaware of how poor waste management practices costs the environment,” said Cllr Mfikoe. Johannesburg is one of the first cities in South Africa to embark on such a large recycling initiative.A total of 325 000 household are expected to be using the concept between now and next year. At present, the City collects 1,8 million tons of garbage a year, with some 224 200 tons dumped illegally. At this rate, the City will run out of landfill sites in about eight years.

Virtues of Hajj A

bu Hurayrah radhiyallahu anhu reports that Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam said “Whoever performs Hajj for the sake of pleasing Allah and therein utters no word of evil, nor commits any evil deed, shall return from it as free from sin as the day on which his mother gave birth to him.” When a child is ushered into this world, it enters this life without any blemish and is free from any form of sin. Now, when the Hajj has been performed with utmost sincerity for Allah’s sake, the pilgrim returns to that sinless state. When we speak of forgiveness of sins as in the Hadeeth mentioned above, we actually refer to minor sins. However, the contents of this Hadeeth have been noted in such numerous Ahaadeeth that some learned Ulaamaa are of the opinion that minor as well as major sins are included in this pardon from Allah. In this Hadeeth under discussion, three things are mentioned. In the first place we read that Hajj should be for Allah’s sake, and that there should be no worldly object and no ulterior motive prompting this holy deed, neither should it be for the show of things, nor for personal fame. Many people proceed to Makkah for the sake of personal honour and show. Such people have indeed wasted whatever they have spent by way of wealth health and energy. For them there shall be no reward. We admit that when a person has performed his Hajj even for the sake of showing others, his obligation has been carried out. But how foolish it is indeed that a person should deny himself such great virtue and reward (in the form of Allah’s great pardon) merely because of his desire to be noted among

some people. Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam once said, “Near the time of Qiyaamah the rich ones from amongst my Ummah will perform Hajj for the sake of travel and holiday; (like having a holiday in Hijaaz instead of one in London or Paris). The middle class will perform Hajj for commercial purposes, thereby transporting goods from here to there while bringing commercial goods from there to here. The Ulamaa will perform Hajj for the sake of show and fame; (to outdo and surpass Maulana so and so, or any rival shaykh who had performed Hajj a certain number of times). The poor will perform Hajj for the purpose of begging.” (Kanzul Ummaal) The Ulamaa have stated that should a person perform a “Hajje Badal” on behalf of someone else for a specific price, so that he derives worldly benefit from such a Hajj, he too is included among those who perform Hajj for commercial purposes. In another Hadeeth we read “that the kings and rulers will perform Hajj for the sake of having pleasurable holidays; the wealthy ones for the sake of business; the poor ones for the sake of begging; while the learned ones will come for Hajj for the sake of show.” (It’haaf) In the first of these two Traditions, we read that the wealthy ones will perform Hajj for the sake of having a tour and a holiday. In the second Hadeeth we read again that they will do so for the sake of business. In actual fact there is no contradiction here even though it apparently seems so. In the former case, those mentioned as wealthy ones are actually those very rich ones who in the second Hadeeth are called sultaans or rulers. In actual fact they are slightly lower that the rulers. For this reason they are also called the middle class. Once Umar radhiyallahu anhu was standing between Mount Safaa and Marwah. A group of people came along, alighted from their camels and proceeded to perform tawaaf around Ka’bah. They then came for the sa’ee between Safaa and Marwah. Umar radhiyallahu anhu inquired from them as to who they were. They replied that they were from Iraq. When Umar radhiyallahu anhu inquired as to whether they

perhaps had any other intention, e.g. to claim an inheritance, to reclaim a debt to them, or for any other business purpose. They replied: “No”. Then Umar radhiyallahu anhu said: “In that case restart your deeds (like people who have done no evil deeds)”. What Umar radhiyallahu anhu implied was that having come to the Holy House solely for Allah’s sake, their previous evil deeds were forgiven. They can now start anew. The second point that becomes clear from the Hadeeth under discussion is that no evil word shall be spoken. The Ulamaa have explained that the word “rafath” (evil speech) includes every single form of words which are unseemly, nonsensical and unnecessary to such an extent that even the mention of sexual relations with one’s wife is also included. To indicate or insinuate such actions with hand signs or the eyes, should be refrained from. All such actions and others which stir passions and lust are condemned.

Fordsburg Community Newspaper Pg 29

radhiyallahu anhu inquired, whether the man had been on a journey with that person, to which the man said that he had not. Then Umar radhiyallahu anhu said: “You do not know him.” In one Hadeeth it is stated that a person praised another in the presence of Umar radhiyallahu anhu. Umar radhiyallahu anhu asked: “Did you travel with him?” He replied: “I did not travel with him.” Umar radhiyallahu anhu asked: “Did you have any dealings with him ?” He answered: “No, I had no dealings with him.” Umar radhiyallahu anhu then said: “You do not know that person.” (It’haaf). There can be no doubt about it that only after having been with a person in similar cases can one truly know a person’s character and his reactions to situations. On a journey there is always a certain amount of inconvenience which inevitably leads to arguments and it is for this reason that the Qur’aan especially mentions: “And let there be no arguments in Hajj.” by Shaykhul Hadeeth Muhammad Zakariyya

The third point towards which attention is drawn is “fusooq”, which here signifies every single form of disobedience to Allah’s will. One should especially avoid any form of argument and dispute. In one Hadeeth our Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam has said: “The beauty of Hajj is attained by speaking amicably with others and to feed them.” To argue with fellow Hujjaaj and to fight with them is the opposite of amicable speech. Hence it is the duty of a Haajji not to criticise his fellow Hujjaaj, to meet everyone with love, humility and humbleness, and to deal with them in a most friendly manner. Some Ulamaa have explained that to meet others in a friendly manner does not only mean that one should not hurt or trouble one’s fellow men. It means that one should (without retaliation) bear and pardon the hurt that comes from their side to you. The word safar (a journey) means in actual fact “to expose”, “to make clear”. The Ulamaa informs us that a journey is called safar in Arabic because on a journey one’s character is exposed and becomes clear. Once Umar radhiyallahu anhu asked a man whether he knew a certain person to which the man said that he knew him. Then Umar

edal Paints Marks Park Cricket Club hosted Strand’s touring Hottentots Holland Cricket Club over the Heritage Day long weekend. The touring Hottentots Holland Cricket Club players arrived on Thursday 20th September at OR Tambo international and were treated to a ride in the Gautrain. The Hottentots Holland Cricket Club Touring squad included 30 players lead by the Club Captain Fahdil Crombie. Based in the Helderberg area of the Western Cape, Hottentots Holland Cricket Club has been in existence since 1952. Amidst trying times and circumstances, the Club is still active in promoting cricket and other youth programme in the community. The long weekend tour included two 20 over games played against Medal Paints Marks Park Cricket Club at the Zoo Lake Cricket grounds on Friday night. Hottentots Holland Cricket Club won the first game by 35 runs with Marks Park Cricket Club winning the second night game by 5 wickets. Yasser Cooke was the leading wicket taker for Marks Park with 4 wickets for 23 run off his 4 overs. Saturday included a 40 over game between Medal Paints Marks Park Cricket Club and Hottentots Holland Cricket Club at Lenasia Tech Cricket Grounds. Marks Park Cricket Club won the game by 6 wickets with 11 overs to spare; Yasin Manack was the top bowler finishing with 3 wickets for 8 runs off 4 overs followed by Zaid

Saloojee with 3 wickets for 21 runs off his 6 overs. On Sunday 23 September the tourists played a game against Roshnee Cricket Club in Roshnee. In a low scoring game, the tourists scored 90 all out and Roshnee passed the score with only one wicket lost. While there was intense rivalry between the players on the field, the atmosphere off the field was more sociable and allowed the players to rekindle old friendships and forge new ones. It was most of the Hottentots Holland Cricket Club players’ first visit to Johannesburg and they got to experience the delights of Fordsburg over a long weekend first hand. “It was a great pleasure to have hosted our old friends Hottentots Holland Cricket Club from Helderberg here in Johannesburg. We were hosted by them in the 2011 season when Marks Park Cricket Club toured Cape Town and apart from the fantastic cricket we played, we formed lasting relationships. This was a great opportunity for both Club’s players to learn about cricket and life from each other by sharing experiences and we hope to host more touring teams from our neighbouring provinces in the future” said Medal Paints Marks Park Cricket Club Head Coach and Club Captain Yasin Manack. Medal Paints Marks Park Cricket Club would like to thank all the players of both Hottentots Holland Cricket Club and Marks Park Cricket Club for making the tour a successful one as well as all those who assisted and contributed towards organising the tour.

zzuri United have won the Moosa bLaher Super League. They have performed consistently well throughout the season beating a number of quality teams. Losing only four times they proved to be a real power house this season. Azzuri made a blistering start to the campaign taking the top spot from the start. In the early stages of the season the team faltered twice only losing to Ambassadors and Fordsburg City. However, they bounced back immediately following the setback and thrashing Sundowns by scoring nine goals. Azzuri extended their dominance when they convincingly completed the double over last year Super League winners, Newtown Tigers. This was followed by a hiding given to APPA A beating them 7-1. The strike force of Azzuri clearly proved to be instrumental in their title win this season. They have recorded the most goals scored by any team this campaign. Credit must be given to the whole team who performed admirably and with heart throughout the season.

Ozayr Patel Fordsburg City, Tshepo Stars and APPA A were the only teams that stood a chance of possibly challenging the Italians. Each team threw their chance away with vital losses that removed them from the title race. The defining game for Azzuri’s season was the three nil drubbing of Fordsburg. Azzuri’s victory in that game gave them the edge and saw the team open up a margin that was too difficult for Fordsburg to narrow. Losses to Newtown as well as Tshepo resulted in Fordsburg ending in second position. The second position came with some luck courtesy of two walkovers from APPA A. Despite losing their last two games Azzuri had won the league with three games to spare. The team ended the season approximately five points clear of Fordsburg. They were clearly the dominant team for the season and deserved league winners. Their victory sets up an enthralling knock-out as other teams will focus their attention on winning the Cup having lost the league.

he MMC for Health and Social Development, Nonceba Molwele said initiatives such as the Mayoral Charity Golf Day show that City of Johannesburg is caring and socially responsible. “The fight against HIV/Aids can be won if the City and its partners work together. It is

through partnerships such as these that we can do more and build better communities.” “The Mayoral Golf Day facilitates partnerships to address the challenges that are faced by the City and to enhance the work done by the non-governmental organisations in our communities”, said Executive Mayor Tau. An amount of R1,2 million was raised on the day for the Joburg Mayoral Aids Fund to address the primary needs and plight of people living with HIV/Aids. The Joburg Aids Council was established in 2001 to advise the City on Aids-related issues and campaigns and to mobilise communities to support fundraising and awareness programmes. The Executive Director of Health, Dr. Refik Bismilla said there is stability in the prevalence of HIV/Aids in Johannesburg as a result of partnerships with the Global Coalition for Health to combat HIV/Aids. “All regions within the City have HIV/Aids treatment sites and thus are accessible to those needing them the most.” .

Azzuri United record significant GMLFA hosts Sasol SAFA first victory over Fordsburg City Johannesburg Region U19

A

zzuri United could not have chosen a better time to record their first victory over Fordsburg City. The match took place on a cold Sunday morning with the tie being touted as a six-pointer. A win for Fordsburg would have resulted in valuable ground being gained on league leaders Azzuri, whereas a win for the Italians would result in them putting an almost un-touchable distance between the two teams. Concentration was rife in both camps from the pre-match warm-up and the enthralling battle looked to be full of promise. It was Azzuri who started the game playing better football. They played a high defensive line, squeezing the game into Fordsburg’s half. The packed midfield and lack of space made it extremely difficult for Fordsburg’s middle to move the ball around. The Italians enjoyed majority of the early exchanges and seemed to be winning the ball in key departments. They certainly looked the hungrier of the two teams and it was not long before their opener came. The ball was worked through the right hand side of Fordsburg’s defence allowing an Italian striker to have a shot. The second Azzuri striker latched onto his partners shot turned cross and tapped the ball in with ease. Fordsburg’s appeals for offside fell onto the linesman’s deaf ears and the fully deserved goal had stood. The goal conceded seemed to spring a bit of life into the team chasing the league leaders. The midfielder of Fordsburg managed to break through the defensive lines of Azzuri only to see his chip fall wide of the keeper’s left post. The Italians defence remained resolute and managed to keep Fordsburg at bay not allowing them to

Ozayr Patel create many clear cut chances aside from a set-piece. As the half was coming to an end and the half looked like ending with a one goal lead, Azzuri capitalised on the Fordsburg defence which seemed to fall asleep. A ball played in from the right side fell to the left wing of Azzuri who took advantage of a hesitating defence and slotted the ball past the scrambling keeper. Azzuri certainly went in at the break the better of the two teams. As with any team trailing at halftime Fordsburg came out in gung-ho mode attempting to get back in the game. Two changes were made in an attempt to salvage the score-line. The second 45 saw the Italians alter their defensive tactics by dropping deeper in defence to protect their two goal lead. Early in the half Fordsburg were given an opportunity to half the deficit with a free kick just outside the box after a foul by the opposing keeper which saw him booked. The keeper saved well after his error, diving low to his left and pushing the ball out for a corner. It was Fordsburg who had been presented with another opportunity to score from a header but it was placed wide of the keeper. The midfield of Azzuri had continued to do an excellent job breaking down a lot of play and distributing the ball well. They were a major reason for Fordsburg not being able to build clear cut attacks. With approximately 20 minutes to go Fordsburg were handed a massive lifeline when they received a penalty. The Azzuri keeper was booked for a second time for a foul and was sent off. The Fordsburg striker sent the ball over the cross bar from the spot kick and any chance of a revival seemed to be gone as the heads of his teammates dropped. The miss seemed to give Azzuri more of a morale boosting as they created chances. Despite the extra man advantage Fordsburg just couldn’t break down an excellent Azzuri team. It was the Italians who grabbed the final goal when their striker grabbed a brace from another defensive error and sent a rocket in off the post to put the game truly too bed. Azzuri United deserved their first victory over Fordsburg City. In a game that had a great impact on the league, they certainly had risen to the occasion and were better in all aspects of the game. They were the hungrier of the two teams and outplayed Fordsburg in defence, midfield and upfront. They have earned the bragging rights until the two teams meet again.

Football Tournament

T

he Greater Mayfair League Football Association (GMLFA) hosted the Sasol SAFA Johannesburg Region U19 Football Tournament this past weekend. The tournament aimed to promote football amongst local communities as well as for various LFA’s to measure their footballing level with others. The tournament stretched across a number of LFA’s. These included Alex North, Deep South, Eldorado, Greater Mayfair, Jowest, Midrand, Orange Farm, Rand Central, Roodepoort and Soweto. There was a ladies section running as well in which the local ladies team got to ply their footballing talents. The tournament was an ideal opportunity for players to progress as a SAFA Johannesburg squad was selected in which players will be given an opportunity to

represent their region.

Ozayr Patel

The Greater Mayfair region consisted of players from several areas including Lenasia, Azaadville and Mayfair. The team was coached by a Fordsburg City coach and a Newtown Tigers coach. All players take part in the GMLFA league. A few of the players, despite being U19 play in the highest division the league has to offer. The team managed to progress to the semi-finals of the tournament before being knocked out courtesy of a last minute winner from Soweto. The final was a gripping affair in which the LFA from Alex North took the top honours by beating Soweto. The ladies section was also an U19 tournament. Our local ladies did well but did not progress past the round robin stage. The ladies section was won by the Rand Central LFA beating Alex in the final.
