We just want to thank you for all the effort you put for this magazine! WE are under construction with our name and if you have any ideas we would really apreciate the imput! Several sections have been added; These sections however, are just temporary and are only used when we have something to put in. Your contributions helps us a lot! The cupcake evolved in the United States in the 19th century, and it was revolutionary because of the amount of time it saved in the kitchen. There was a shift from weighing out ingredients when baking to measuring out ingredients. According to the Food Timeline Web, food historians have yet to pinpoint exactly where the name of the cupcake originated. There are two theories: one, the cakes were original cooked in cups and two, the ingredients used to make the cupcakes were measured out by the cup. In the beginning, cupcakes were sometimes called "number" cakes, because they were easy to remember by the measurements of ingredients it took to create them: One cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, four eggs, one cup of milk, and one spoonful of soda. Clearly, cupcakes today have expanded to a wide variety of ingredients, measurements, shapes, and decorations - but this was one of the first recipes for making what we know today as cupcakes. Cupcakes were convenient because they cooked much quicker than larger cakes. When baking was down in hearth ovens, it would take a long time to bake a cake, and the final product would often be burned. Muffin tins, also called gem pans, were popular around the turn of the 20th century, so people started created cupcakes in tins. Since their creation, cupcakes have become a pop culture trend in the culinary world. They have spawned dozens of bakeries devoted entirely to them. While chocolate and vanilla remain classic favorites, fancy flavors such as raspberry meringue and espresso fudge can be found on menus. There are cookbooks, blogs, and magazines specifically dedicated to cupcakes.

It Is Well With My Soul This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871 at the age of four, shortly followed by the great Chicago fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer and had invested significantly in property in the area of Chicago which was decimated by the great fire). His business interests were further hit by the economic downturn of 1873 at which time he had planned to travel to Europe with his family on the SS Ville du Havre. In a late change of plan, he sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire. While crossing the Atlanti the ship sank rapidly after a collision with a sea vessel, the Loch Earn and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone . . .". Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died. ~Wikipedia

The distinctive sound of Libera has travelled the world in the last few years. The group's albums have topped both mainstream and classical charts in many countries, and their recordings hold their place in top-ten artists. The boys who make up the vocal band Libera have been described as “normal” and “ordinary”. However, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies, they are unlike any other group you have ever heard. These are truly sounds to lift the soul. The extra high chords, are worth listening to and celestial sounds for a new time. The singers of Libera who are aged seven to sixteen attend many different local schools in South London and come from a variety of backgrounds. They go to many churches around South London. Although they are boys and they sing, they do not think of themselves as choirboys, but rather as an alternative kind of boy band. There are around 40 members in 2012. While the unique sound of Libera may be impossible to pigeonhole, its universal appeal has endeared the group to fans all over the world, particularly in the US, the UK, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, where their CDs top the mainstream and classical charts and where they pack concert halls appearing in their trademark flowing white robes on imaginatively lit stages. Quilled Valentines and Cards Quilling, or paper filigree, is the art of creating intricate shapes from strips of paper. The technique is simple: After a long, narrow ribbon of paper is rolled around a needlelike tool, the strip is slipped off, arranged with your fingertips into the desired shape, and then glued to a background of contrasting paper, fabric, or wood. Quilled motifs such as flowers and hearts express sweet sentiments for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, but they also add an elegant touch to cards for any occasion. These open hearts begin as single strips of paper; crease them at the center and then roll inward from each end. Glue several to a card, and write candyheart sentiments beneath them. Or slip one to a best friend and let it speak itself. Classic valentine messages never go out of style. You can shape individual strips of paper, curling the ends as you would a ribbon, to form letters that resemble calligraphy. Use carefully placed dabs of craft glue to hold each letter in place on a card. Create a trio of fringed flowers, such as daisies or zinnias, and glue them to folded card stock. Use an opaque pen to add a message in your own script. Embellish handwritten poems, messages, and family photographs with intricate combinations of quilled shapes. The scroll, the marquise, the tight circle, and the teardrop are all easy to master; quill the shapes first, and then combine them to create borders. Or draw a border design and curl strips of paper to match.

Valentine Candy Boxes How-To 1. Print the heart template. The largest heart is for the lids; the two smaller hearts, for positioning the edges. Trace the largest heart onto mat board twice, and cut out with craft knife. With marker, color along cut edges of mat board. 2. Spray 1 side of mat board heart with spray adhesive, and attach to colored paper. Cut along edge with craft knife. Repeat on reverse side, and then with second heart. 3. Position medium-size template on 1 paper-covered heart, leaving about 1/8 inch all around, and trace with a pencil to create the guideline for gluing the edge. Position the smallest template on the other paper-covered heart, leaving about 3/8 inch all around, and trace with pencil to create the guideline for gluing the edge. 4. Cut box edges according to lengths on template: Make four 1-inch-wide strips of watercolor paper and eight 7/8-inchwide strips of colored paper. With marker, color the exposed edge and about 1/4 inch down the sides of the mat board. 5. Working with a few inches at a time, squeeze glue along guideline, and bend side strip to attach. Repeat with all side strips, and let dry. Using spray adhesive, attach colored paper to both sides of each strip, exposing some of the marker-colored edge. Fill with candy, and close. 6. Surprise a loved one by hanging a heart-shaped container filled with candy on his doorknob or near his computer.

Cupcakes: 1 ¼ Cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking Powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/ 2 cup unsalted butter -

¾ cup sugar. ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 2 large eggs 1/3 cup milk 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries, blueberries etc.
12 flat bottom ice cone cups BUTTER FROSTING: ½ cup unsalted butter, softened. ½ teaspoon vanilla extract 1 ½ cups confectioner’s (icing) sugar. 1/8 teaspoon pink food coloring. 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line a standard 12-cup muffin tin with paper liners. CUPCAKES- Combine the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt in a small bowl. Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on medium-high speed until pale and creamy. Add the eggs one at a time beating until just blended after each addition. With Mixer on low speed, add the mixed dry ingredients, alternating with the milk, Stir fruit of choice in by hand. Spoon the batter into the prepared cups, filling each one three quarters full. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and firm to the touch. Cool completely before removing the cupcake. Remove the paper cases from the cupcakes. Shape the bottom of the cakes with a serrated knife so they sit inside the cones. BUTTER FROSTING: Beat the butter and vanilla in a small bowl using an electric mixer till creamy. Gradually Add the confectioners’ sugar until combined. Divide the buttercream evenly among three small bowls. Add the pink food coloring to on, stir the cocoa powder into another and leave the other plain. Spread the frostings over the cupcakes, creating four of each color.

Place some raspberry preserves in the center of each one and spoon the remaining batter over the top, filling each one three-quarters full. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Let cool completely before removing the cupcakes. Chocolate Buttercream: Melt the chocolate in a double boiler over barely simmering water, stirring till smooth. Remove from heat and let cool. Beat the butter and vanilla in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on medium high speed until pale and creamy/ Pour in the milk and cooled chocolate, beating until blended. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar, beating until blended. Pile the frosting on top of each cupcake using the back of a spoon or spatula to create volcano shape. Make an indent at top. Thin down the raspberry preserves with a little hot water. Spoon the raspberry preserves into the top of each “volcano,” allowing it to run down the sides a little. Brownie Heart Cupcakes

Ingredients
Vegetable oil, cooking spray 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse salt 3 sticks unsalted butter, cut into pieces 12 ounces unsweetened chocolate, coarsely chopped 3 cups sugar 6 large eggs, room temperature 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract Basic Buttercream
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line standard muffin tins with paper liners. Coat an 8-inch square cake pan with cooking spray, line bottom with parchment, then spray parchment. 2. Whisk flour, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl. Place butter and chocolate in a heatproof mixer bowl set over a pot of simmering water, stirring until chocolate melts. 3. Attach bowl to mixer, add sugar, and whisk on medium-high speed until smooth, about 3 minutes. Beat in eggs, 1 at a time, then vanilla. Reduce speed to low, and add flour mixture. 4. Divide batter among muffin cups, filling each 2/3 full. Spread remaining batter in square pan. Bake until set but still soft, about 18 minutes. Let cool in tins and pan on wire racks. 5. Frost cupcakes with buttercream. Cut out 24 hearts from brownie in pan using a 1 1/2-inch heart-shaped cutter. Top each cupcake with a heart.
Oreo Cupcakes. Ingredients: 1 stick unsalted butter at room temp., 1 cup milk, 2 tsp vanilla extract, 2 and 1\4 cups flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1\2 tsp salt, 1 and 2\3 cup sugar, 3 large egg whites at room temp., 1 package of Oreo cookies (about 45 cookies). Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 F. Insert liners into a medium cupcake pan. Twist apart 24 Oreos. Place the wafer with filling on it, filling side up, in the bottom of each paper liner. Cut the other wafers in half. Save 24 halves for later use. Crush the other wafer halves. Cut the remaining Oreo cookies into quarters with a sharp knife. Toss with 2 Tbsp flour and set aside. In a large bowl cream the butter until fluffy, about 3-5 min. Add milk and vanilla and mix to combine. In a separate bowl mix together flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry mixture to the butter mixture. Mix until integrated. Stir in sugar. With an electric mixer on low speed, beat for 30 sec. Turn the mixer up to medium speed and beat for 2 minutes. Add the egg whites. Beat for 2 more min. Stir in the quartered cookies. Fill the cupcake liners three quarters full with batter. Bake for about 20 min. or until a toothpick inserted in the center of cupcakes comes out clean. Cool cupcakes in the pan. Assemble the cupcakes: Once cupcakes have cooled completely, frost with frosting (you can make your own or you can just do it the easy way, get a can of frosting at the store!). Sprinkle the cupcakes with the crushed Oreos and place 1\2 of an Oreo on the frosting of each cupcake. Enjoy!! ~ Submitted by: Addie Imel
Cookies and Cream Frosting Yield: Frosting for 12 to 15 cupcakes Prep Time: 10 min
Ingredients: 3 cups powdered sugar 1 cup salted butter, at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 to 2 Tablespoons whipping cream 12 Oreo (cream-filled sandwich cookies- chocolate or vanilla), crumbled finely 12 to 15 additional Oreo's for garnish (optional)
Directions: 1. In a large bowl, with a hand or stand mixer, cream together sugar and butter on low speed. Mix until well blended. Increase speed to medium and beat for another 3 minutes. 2. Add vanilla and cream and continue to beat on medium speed for 1 minute more, adding more cream if needed for desired spreading/piping consistency. Add the cookie crumbles and mix just until combined. 3. Scoop into a piping bag with a wide tip and pipe decoratively onto cupcakes, or spread onto cupcakes as desired. Garnish with a whole Oreo cookie.
Amazing Spice Cake
Preparation time: 20 minutes Servings: 15-20 Ingredients for cake: 21/2 cups flour 2 cups brown sugar, packed 1/2 cup cornstarch 2 tsp. baking soda 2 tsp. allspice 2 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. cloves (we use a little less) 1 tsp. salt 2/3 cup cooking oil 2 Tbsp. vinegar
2 cups water Ingredients for caramel frosting: 1/2 cup margarine 1 cup brown sugar, packed 4 Tbsp. milk 3/4 cup powdered sugar Note: If you add more powdered sugar and make a thicker frosting, it can be spread more evenly over the cake. The amount listed in this recipe makes the frosting too thin, and it ends up being very thick on the edges and corners and thin on top, because the cake rises slightly. Directions: 1. Mix all cake ingredients with whisk until well blended. Pour batter into 9" x 13" pan. 2. Bake at 325* F for 35-40 minutes. Cool cake before frosting. 3. To prepare frosting melt margarine and brown sugar over low heat, stirring for 2 minutes. Add milk and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and cool completely. Chapter One ‘I Get Out of Summer Cleaning’ Author: Adeline Imel Age- 13
My crazy summer vacation started with what everyone else’s always starts with: boredom. I sighed as I sat on my bed and stared out my window imagining what it would be like to have an adventure, a vacation, or at least a glass of lemonade. It didn’t help that I live in a tiny town smack dab in the middle of Kansas. My town consists of two houses (one’s mine and the other is abandoned), a tiny post office, and a bad excuse of a bed and breakfast. I sighed again. This was only my second morning of vacation and I was already depressed. All the other girls at my school would be on their way to the beach, in there swimming pool, or visiting relatives. Me? Oh, I would just spend the summer melting in the heat. You see, my parents have something against going on vacations. They think that summer is for work. When we aren’t working...oh, never mind. We’re always working. Fixing the roof, cleaning the house, and trying to get grass to at least grow in a little patch of our front yard. The grass thing never worked. We might as well have tried to grow grass in a hot deep fryer. “Avery, are you ever going to get up?” my mother called up the stairs. “Sure.” I sighed for the third time and looked at myself in the mirror. Wrinkled pajamas, shoulder length red hair in a tangled heap, green eyes with purple rings under them, and pale skin with thirteen years’ worth of freckles. Yeah, I was decent enough to go downstairs. “Avery, you could have at least brushed your hair, it looks like a rats nest!” Mom greeted me with her usual compliments. “I thought you wanted me to get up!” I protested. “Well, I just wanted help with breakfast. I have to get the twins ready for the day. Big day you know, spring clean-oops, I mean summer cleaning the bedrooms!” My mom giggled at her joke all the way up the stairs. I yawned and walked over to the cabinet to get out some bowls and cereal, it was the only breakfast I knew how to make. After I got breakfast out I slumped over on the couch into a perfect face plant. Of course, just before I could fall asleep again my twin brothers (three years old) came bounding down the stairs, the smell of their freshly washed hair trailing after them. “Avery, didn’t you sleep well last night?” my mom asked me. I lifted my head from the couch and blew the hair out of my eyes, “Oh, yeah. house. Mom never let me or anyone even go near it for “safety reasons”. She thought the house was going to fall on us or something. I mean, the thing looked sturdy...sort of, anyway. I got up and walked over to my closet. Closing my eyes I reached my arm in and pulled something out (my usual way of deciding what to wear). Today it looked like a neon green T-shirt and jean capris. I threw on my clothes and ran a comb through my hair. Looking in the mirror I frowned. My hair stuck out in all directions making odd lumps on top of my head. I combed it again. No luck. Sighing, I put it in a ponytail and smiled. “I might have found a new hairstyle.” I whispered to myself. I wouldn’t let myself care about things like makeup and hair, but it did bother me a little when I went to school looking like Bozo the clown. I smiled again thinking that I would stick with the ponytail for a while. I glanced out the window one last time and a crazy idea formed in my head. Don’t do it, my conscience whispered. “I’m gonna do it!” I whispered. I smiled to myself because I, Avery Thompson, might have found a way to escape spr-I mean, summer cleaning.
